Thank you for replying to my post, Joseph Magnuson. Just for the record, though, I wasn't asking for ironclad (or, hard and fast) rules regarding numbers in Hoodoo. Rather, I was asking about general guidelines about numbers in Hoodoo, especially about which, if any, numbers are generally considered "bad luck" numbers that are best avoided if possible.

I've never heard of any number being "unlucky" in hoodoo. Some numbers (3, 7, 13) I consider luckier than others, and some numbers (3, 7, 9, 11, 13) get more use in traditional hoodoo formulas than other numbers on the integer scale. I suppose if you were Thelemic, you could use 93 ingredients if you wanted to.

Best wishes

Thank you for your reply, zolakathryn. Since I'm not Thelemic, I don't think that I'll be working with the number 93 all that much, if at all.

I love this thread...
I'm 50/50 number obsessed and "moved by spirit"...lol.
Nevertheless, let me ask this: do most of you count petition papers and personal concerns as part of the "overall count" ???

Thanks !!

Wow. I was just over at the site of a person who graduated from my course and sells spiritual supplies, and this person wrote the following:

"Traditionally, hoodoo doesn't involve numerology per se. There is very little done with common numerological techniques, i.e., the reduction of numbers to significant single digits which are then analyzed, etc."

Man, that is just WRONG.

I mean, seriously wrong.

It was written by a well-meaning and intelligent White woman who was never part of Black culture, either Black hoodoo culture or Black gambling culture.

When i was a kid, in Oakland, every hoodoo candle shop sold "The Secret of Numbers Revealed" by Godfrey Spencer. This book was a reprint of an earlier book called "How To Get Your Winning Number" by Lewis de Claremont, a pseudonymous hoodoo author best known for his book "Legends of Incense, Herb, and Oil Magic," who was associated with the very first hoodoo supply company, Oracle Craftsmen -- which opened in the 1920s and ceased business in 1940 or so, and sold all rights to books and to formulas to Joseph Spitalnick a.k.a. Joseph Kay, who founded Dorene Publishing and Mysteria products, both of which are still in business in Texas. But playing the numbers went back FAR, FAR earlier than DeClaremont. Folks were playing Policy soon after Emancipation.

Image

Numerology, including the reduction of numbers by digits, is HUGELY IMPORTANT in hoodoo. Dang. It is the basis of dozens of lottery work-outs, based either on dream numbers or on birthdate numbers.

I have in my music library at least 50 songs about policy and numerology -- like Lightning Hopkins singing he's gonna bet his woman's number. You can't get someone's number except through numerology!

All these dream books we sell with lists of names in the back, and their numbers -- most of them were worked out according to the regular method of adding digits.

This White-washing of hoodoo really is weird.

Ten years ago it was "hoodoo practitioners never did astrology." I proved that false (read all about it in "The Black Folder") and now we get this, "traditionally, hoodoo doesn't involve numerology per se"

Yeah, but, sweetheart. It DOES. It really does.

Lord, the tales i could tell, and i suppose i will have to. Madame Fu-Futtum and her bookie shop ... Carl Z. Talbot ... These were famous African American rootworkers who ran spiritual supply shops in New York City and took bets on policy and sold numerology books. I bought them! They were around all through the 1960s and into the 1970s. Mr. Matthew Murray was doing numerology for his clients, using the numerology of clients' names and' social security cards until his death in his 80s, around 2006.

C'mon, let's get real. We wouldn't have a Lucky Number Oil and a Lucky 13 Oil and an Aunt Sally's Lucky Dream Oil if NUMBERS and their manipulation weren't important in hoodoo.

I know, i know. This forum is heavily weighted toward folks with love problems. But "traditionally," hoodoo is important in the Black community for many more reasons than solving love problems. LUCK is one of the central concerns of a well-balanced and happy person.

Love -- they've got it.

Money -- they've at least got a job.

Protection -- they're covered.

What else is needed? -- LUCK.

And the "traditional" way to get lucky is to catch a number. And the ways to catch a lucky number? Everybody knows at least these three:

Dream of it, see an omen, or bet your name and birth date.

C - A - T - H - E - R - I - N - E
3 - 1 - 2 - 8 - 5 - 9 - 9 - 5 - 5
- 4 - - 10 - - 14 - - 14 - 5
- - 14 - - - - - - 28 - 5
- - - - - - 42 - - - - 5
- - - - - - - - - 47
- - - - - - - - - 11

Y - R - O - N - W - O - D - E
7 - 9 - 6 - 5 - 5 - 6 - 4 - 5
- 16 - - 11 - - 11 - - 9
- - 27 - - - - - 20
- - - - - 47
- - - - - 11

11-11 reduces to 2-2 and thence to 4 (but you would never really reduce it, because 11 is a Master Number, and is not reduced).

My "hidden" middle name (which i do not use) is anna --

A - N - N - A

1 - 5 - 5 - 1

- 6 - - 6

- - 12

- - 3

Thus my full legal name is

11 - 3 - 11

- - 25

- - 7

My birthdate is May 12, 1947:

5 - 12 - 19 - 47
- 17 - 19 - 11
- - - 47
- - - 11

Now look above

4 - 7 - 11 - 47 -- These are my MAJOR numbers, and of them all, 47 and 11 are by far the most prominent.

3 -- That is my MINOR number (i can use it with a 4, to make a 7).

That is an old-school hoodoo number workout.

And by the way, in case you were wondering ...

4711 is my lucky brand of cologne and 1111 is my Hoodoo Psychics extension number.

Hi,

I am making a mojo bag, I read on the mojo pages that if you add several herbs together , they would count as 1.
And it also said you could pair 2 minerals and they would count as 1 So the question is .....
I am going to add a Queen Elizabeth root and Sampson snake root. Would that count as 1
or 2.

Hello, Clarkie,

Everybody's different.

I would count the two different roots as 2.

Others might count them as 1. But my educated guess is that the general consensus would be 2.

Well, a pinch of mixed herbs could certainly count as one ingredient -- it makes sense to do it that way. But with two whole roots -- and different kinds at that -- you have to tie a little knot in your brain to count those as one ingredient. Count in a way that makes sense to you.

Now, I know of one spell for sex workers that calls for 21 ingredients, including seven pubic hairs: and those hairs are counted one by one as SEVEN ingredients. It's just the nature of that particular spell.

There are plenty of rootworkers who don't count ingredients for mojo hands at all; they rely on other principles. For instance, what Miss Cat calls a "narrative of intention" -- assembling your ingredients in a way and an order that tells the story of what you want to accomplish.

Miss Cat explains how she blends oils that way: Good luck,

In HHRM when A Woman's Thirteen Year Right of Capture is explained, there were a total of seven personal concerns, seven of which were drops of blood. Something to consider when counting. (To total 13, that is.)

To all the "number-ologists" out there --

If you get so hung up on counting that it does not come naturally to you, or you don't understand what your teacher told you because you don't have a teacher and are just thumbing through web pages, you are not going to learn much.

Michaele and Aida told you their ways, and i will tell you my advice: Either count or don't count, but if you do, don't try to make up your own rules, because that is just wasting your time. Do not take a "consensus gathering" approach to magic. It will render you unaware of the true intent and purpose of your work, cut you off from a living tradition, and just basically get you constipated. Get a teacher. A mojo is not some insignificant li'l thing that everyone can make for themselves. I learned how from many teachers, and you ought to as well.

I noticed some of the controlling/compelling spell kits contain 9 candles. I'm just wondering what the difference is between some of the "power numbers" I've read about, like 7, 9, 11, 13, etc. Is there a reason for this number being used in the kit rather than using one of the other numbers? I'd like to understand the numbers for doing other spellwork, too. Thank you.

In Numerology all numbers have their own special alignments and implementing numbers into your spellwork is another way to increase the efficacy of the spell that you are doing. There is a ton of information on numerology. One book Lucky Mojo carries about this subject is "Numerology for Beginners," to get you started.)

And here are some links to specific magical numbers and why they are considered magical:

How do you use numbers in spells out of curiosity? Do you simply carve it into the candle and dress it?

And go to this page for more numerology books: http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatbooks.html
This is too complicated of a question to post an answer on the forum.

That post on counting numbers deriving as much from preference and practicality as from symbolism was great, Miss Cat. :)

One thing I want to ask is if I were, say, making up a mojo would the herb mixes on their own, such as seven herb, count as seven individual ingredients unless you want it to count as one?

Hello Luckbewithme876,

This is another thing that varies by worker, I have heard it done wboth ways. Go with what feels natural to you. I personally do not count all that often unless it just kinda comes together that way. I would probabyl count the 7 herb mixture as 7 things (making sure I got some of each kind of herb in the work) but that is just me.

Hope this helps!

Peace~

Not sure if this is in the correct place (but I hope it is).

From what I understand, in Hoodoo, there are some numbers that are considered somewhat lucky (or magically 'special', usually in a beneficial way) (numbers such as 3, 7, 13).

But what (if any) numbers are considered unlucky in Hoodoo? What (if any) numbers should a person avoid?

Hello, fire_and_ice ,

I know that in Hoodoo, odd numbers are preferred.

I don't know of any "unlucky" numbers personally, that would be considered what is unlucky to you.

However, I also prefer always following the Hoodoo way of doing things when practicing hoodoo

Thank you for the reply, Miss Aida. So, if I understand correctly, as far as you know, there aren't any unlucky numbers in the Hoodoo Tradition. So, I guess you don't avoid any specific numbers because of them being considered unlucky. Only if person has a personal idea of specific number(s) being unlucky number(s); but in the Hoodoo Tradition, there are no specific numbers considered unlucky. I hope I understand this correctly.

Thank you for the reply. I read the info at the links, and didn't see much about any numbers being considered generally Unlucky.

So, to summarize what I currently understand: In the Hoodoo Tradition, there are No Numbers that are considered Unlucky.

If I'm incorrect, I hope someone knowledgeable posts a correction for me.

Just to clarify: I'm Not currently interested in the general significance of various numbers in the Hoodoo Tradition. My current interest is solely regarding what (if any) Numbers are considered Unlucky in the Hoodoo Tradition.

Like I've already posted above, it seems that in the Hoodoo Tradition, there are No Numbers that are considered Unlucky. I don't mean whether someone personally believes this or that Number to be Unlucky. That's why I make mention to the Hoodoo Tradition.

Miss Aida I love you!

As for the numbers question, the number can have meaning based on different things in hoodoo and not related to bad or good. As Mentioned its a person thing, you wont find text that say this number is bad avoid it or this one is good. you may use the 23 pslam 23 times for 23 days for a cause that is the relationship with the number. 13 is a lucky number because its rare to see 13 ie two die make 12, 13 is not a normal to fall on a friday. 7 can relate to the days of the week, how long it took God to make everything, etc. I am not sure why you are so hell bent on finding negative meaning in numbers in hoodoo when told by Miss Aida it is not a thing. Good luck in the search.

Cat, that's a great story about the 4711 perfume.

My number by birth name is 11 and my birth date number is 7. I guess that's why I'm drawn to the 7-11 Holy oil. I love that oil so much I even add it to my bottles of shampoo and body wash. A funny thing happened last year too. I ordered a few oils from Papa Newt and another woman ordered some 7-11 Holy oil from him. Somehow, the packages got mixed up and the 7-11 Holy oil came to me and she got my oils. When I mailed it back to Papa Newt, the post office messed up and sent the 7-11 Holy oil back to me! I remailed it and that finally took care of it, but I thought that was funny.

I actually came on the board tonight because I see the numbers 11:11, 9:11 and 257 constantly and I was wondering if anyone else had the same issue, but then I found Cat's delightful story. I'll have to get some of the 4711 perfume in my next order.

Hi, Jeanne --

Sounds like 7-11 Holy oil and 4711 Cologne are a great match for you. Mix them! They will separate and you will haveto shake the bottle before use, but that's cool.

Moving into a house with number 13? I'm in two minds about it.

What's your thoughts? What's your suggestions on the matter?

Does anyone live at a house numbered 13?

I really want to live there though. Even though it's 13.

Great question, HappinessRules --

There are many ideas as to why 13 is considered unlucky, but no one knows for sure. One idea is that it represents a long-ago conflict in Europe between minority lunar-calendar people who have 13 months in their year and dominant solar-calendar people who have 12 months in their year. But if that is the case, it happened so long ago that no one really documented it, and it is now just a theory.

Be that as it may, at the present time in mainstream Western folklore, the number 13 is widely thought to be unlucky. Friday the 13th is considered especially unlucky (which some say points to the origin of this concept in caledar-making). Some building owners are so concerned about the bad luck of 13 that they skip the number 13 when numbering the floors of hotels or office buildings. It is interesting, however, to note that the number 13 is not generally believed to be evil, just unlucky.

At the same time, among the same people, both Black and White, 13 is considered very lucky for those who gamble, who are anti-authoritarian, who live outside the law, and who are facing danger -- that is, 13 does not merely become neutral for them, it becomes POSITIVE or "reversed bad luck," which is actually GOOD luck.

For this reason there are many hoodoo products that incorporate the number 13 -- like our own

Lucky 13 Spiritual Supplies:
http://www.luckymojo.com/lucky13.html
This is lucky for gamblers.

This reverses bad luck to good luck.

Also, it is common practice, especially in places that show the influence of English traditions, to give a customer who orders a dozen (that is 12) items, a lucky 13th one -- like an extra 13th month in their year. This is especially common in bakeries, where if you buy 12 rolls or cookies, the 13th one is free -- and the number 13 has thus become known as the Baker's Dozen.

We have many Baker's Dozen specials in our catalogue. It amounts to a discount for bulk retail purchases, but it is easier to to calculate than a percentage discount -- you just count out 12 and then add the "lucky 13" for free!

I myself have never lived at a house with the street number 13, but if i did, i know there would be some great design themes available to decorate it!

Good luck!

Numerology Training with catherine yronwode

Godfrey Spencer's "Secrets of Numbers Revealed" was, until it went out of print, the best known hoodoo book on "The Science of Numberology." To this restored and revised edition of a well-loved classic, catherine yronwode has added much more information, gleaned from 19th century texts and from her own research into the so-called Saturn or Lo Shu Square.

Using nothing more than your birthdate and full name, this workshop will teach you how to derive a startlingly accurate character analysis, how to create a run-down that reveals your minor and major lucky numbers for betting, how to determine the lucky and unlucky days in any month, and how, if you are so inclined, to subtly change the spelling of your name to make yourself a luckier, happier, and more successful person.

TAKE-HOME: A brand-new 96-page book on Numerology for character reading and lucky numbers, plus two personal work-outs on your own name and birthdate.

Numbers are everywhere and all around us — but do you know what they mean and how to read them?

This book explains the five branches of numerical influence on human affairs:

Numerology: How Your Name and Birthdate Reveal Your Character
Arithmancy: Using Your Numbers to Tell Your Future Fortune
Number Magic: Choosing and Changing Your Name for Luck and Profit
How To Get Your Winning Number: Catching Lucky Numbers to Bet

Based on material first written by Dr. Roy Page Walton in 1914, augmented with contributions by Lewis de Claremont and Godfrey Spencer in 1936, and doubled in scope under the editorship and authorship of Catherine Yronwode, this concise, illustrated introduction to the science of numerology will enable you to make your numbers work for you!

Author Catherine Yronwode is the proprietor of the Lucky Mojo Curio Company, a manufactory for traditional herb-based conjure supplies, and the pastor of the Missionary Independent Spiritual Church. She is the author of Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic: Hoodoo in Theory and Practice; and Throwing the Bones: How to Foretell the Future with Bones, Shells, and Nuts.
