Catherine's Hands-On Apprenticeship Training Program

Unread postby Miss Bri » Tue Oct 12, 2010 11:45 am

Hi everyone,
We just returned from the LMC apprenticeship and I would like to say a BIG, BiG, BIG THANK YOU!!! to everyone who made the experience so fun, enjoyable and filled with knowledge. Sister Robin did a wonderful job herding all of us apprentices and showing us how to do our work, the shop staff was super helpful and friendly as always, and of course miss cat's lectures were full of the wonder, variety and tons of knowledge that she brings to everything she does! For grads of the course I highly recommend that you take the opportunity to go up to Forestville and study the hands on methods taught in the apprenticeship program--there is truly no replacement for that kind of knowledge!
love and blessings,
Bri

I believe the apprenticeship is done every year for graduates of the course and they often are around the workshop week in May too. I think there are other times as well, but I might be mistaken.

I know the feeling starskinthesky, of course for me, I'd rather hop in a plane. Something about a 5-7 hour drive from the OC just doesn't sound appealing ;-)

I'm in Olympia Wa. LOL it's so worth the travel time to be able to get there. I just hope I can get a babysitter. I don't think the little ones would fair well in the car that long. :)

It's too bad no one has been able to come up with a instant transport spell yet. LOL ;) It would come in handy in so many situations.

Southwest Airlines has some flights for $49 each way. Might be cheaper than gas, meals, hotel, stress of driving.

Maybe, That would depend on if I have the Kids or not.

With a road trip there is always ways to keep it cheap. Once my van is up and running there is plenty of space to lay out a bed to sleep in there or bring tents to camp out. Bring our own food and snacks in a cooler from home. Driving is stressful in general so no help there. lol. so pretty much just be dealing with the gas costs. Which in the long run would be cheaper then three or four people round trip even at that low cost.

I will defiantly keep that in mind though! :) thanks

I just want to chime in here that my mother and I *drove* from San Antonio, Texas to Forestville, CA. Its a 2 day drive of 15+ hours of driving both days--so...a lot of driving. We chose to do it that way and it is still so completely worth it. You just don't get opportunities to study in a hands on way with living masters in these types of magical systems nowadays. Guess we should get a bumper sticker: will travel for hoodoo!

That is great to hear! It must have been amazing driving into the Lucky Mojo "grounds" after that trip! I feel amazing going there --- and I only have to travel an hour from San Francisco! I agree about traveling to get hands on study....definitely worth it, especially in today's internet world! Great to hear about your journey, both literally and figuratively...

I read the page linked to and it said for each 1/2 day or full day lecture an equal amount of time is to be given to the shop. I'd just like to clarify, if that means 5 full days of lectures then another 5 full days are to be volunteered? I don't have a problem with this, but if I was ever in a position to be able to do this I would need to know how long I was expecting to stay in America. Basically, would I need to prepare for a 2 week stay?

Temont--

You've come to the right place. Lucky Mojo is an amazing resource.

I'd suggest you start with miss cat's online book, Hoodoo in Theory and Practice
http://www.luckymojo.com/hoodoo

...and her excellent print book, Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic
http://www.luckymojo.com/hoodooherbmagic.html

You can learn a lot reading through these forums, and asking questions. You can also take miss cat's Hoodoo Rootwork Correspondence Course:
http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocourse.html

And, if you aren't already, tune in to the Lucky Mojo Hoodoo Rootwork Hour radio show on Sundays. It's a great opportunity to hear professional rootworkers helping clients:
http://www.luckymojo.com/radioshow.html

I hope this helps.

Abraxia Thalgus --

No, the teaching takes about 20 hours and you work for about 20 hours in one week.

Right now we have 8 apprentices on board and we have just completed day one of week three of the program -- the lecture on the history of baths, bathings, and bath crystals, with hands-on training. Here are three of the apprentices learning how to make Uncrossing Bath Crystals:

Today e begin a one-week Apprenticeship program at Lucky Mojo. This week features hands-on training in the making of conjure oils, hoodoo incense, and mojo bags. There are ELEVEN apprentices this week, including Leslieanne Forrester, Dani Oatfield, Yose Witmus, and Nikki WIlson (Missionary Independent Spiritual Church and Lucky Mojo shop employees, all of whom are required to take my course, graduate, and take my apprenticeship classes), AIRR members Lou Florez and Khi Armand, Forum board moderators Papa Newt and Miss Tammie Lee, Sacramento gardener Holly Greenwood, Oklahoma writer Susan Bischoff, and Courtland Townsend, the co-owner of a wonderful little shop in Oakland that is called The Sacred Well.

I will try to get photos uploaded as available.

Due to these all-day activities, you may see a bit less of me on the Forum during this upcoming week, but i will be checking in as i can.

Naught1usMax1mus, yes there are three separate weeks, but the only one that is officially the same time every year is during the Hoodoo Heritage Weekend. There are other times during the year that the apprenticeship weeks happen, but they don't happen at a set time. You'll just have to keep watch for the next one!

Ok. I promised I'd treat myself to the correspondence course when I finished with my bachelors. I just read all of the information on the correspondence course and I was wondering about the list of purchases. It says that they have to be purchased at four different times but I have quite a few supplies already here. How do I know which purchases to start out with or is this something that we find out after ordering the materials and signing up for the course?

We are one week away from the 2015 Apprenticeship training program, scheduled for May 11 - 15th, 2015. I am very excited -- there will be about 20 students at this session. As usual, the teaching is FREE, as a work-trade event: i teach for free and students work an equal number of hours for me in trade. There will be a potluck lunch on Monday and a catered sit-down dinner for all of the apprentices n Wednesday. The whole event will lead up to and flow into the weekend Hoodoo Heritage Festival on May 16 - 17th, which is open to the public.

We have just completed the first day of the Magical Herbology training class for 2015 -- walking around, picking plants, learning the history of how certain herbs came to be used in hoodoo. What a great group of students! I am so happy!

On Wednesday we will have the Candles class, and Friday we will cover Perfumes andSpecial Waters.

I had so wanted to attend the 2016 apprenticeship program but I had a stroke last year and ended up using all my sick and vacation time to recover. But I am planning, God willing, to finally be able to go in 2017. :D

Here we are! It's May 9, 2016, i am drinking coffee, and in about 10 minutes i will go downstairs to teach this year's group of apprentices about the history and methods of making oils for hoodoo spell casting.

Warning -- this is the second to the last time i will be teaching this class in May. The next time will be in 2019, and that will be the last time.

As i have explained, i will be retiring from teaching at the age of 72. There may be a few "extra" apprenticeships along the way during the course of these years, but the "regular" May apprenticeships for my course graduates are scheduled as Week Two (2016 -- now), Week Three (2017), Week One (2018), Week Two (2019) and Week Three (2019). You can take the three weeks of training in any order, but your options are running out.

If you want to learn from me via a hands-on method, catch me soon. This ain't no joke. The correspondence course will continue to be taught, but i will stop taking on apprentices at the age of 72.

And now ... on to today's work!!!!

Hurray for graduating! If you cannot attend, don't fret -- we all do what we can, and perhaps you will be able to arrange vacation time. If not, just consider it something that did not happen!

I was present at the last apprenticeship I did enjoy it very much. I have seen things i never imagined only because I am 26. The things that miss cat displays are early 1900 they are truly the history of my ancestors. She had us work hard and weigh bags and bags of herbs from different parts of the world. She educated us on wild craft, and origin. it was so fun getting to communicate and educate one another about our journeys into HOODOO AND ROOTWORK.

Hi
I recently was going through some LMHRH episodes when I came across Miss Cat saying that the apprenship program in May 2017 was open to students and graduates. Maybe I misheard but can the apprenship week also be done by current students? I thought it was only for graduates of the HRCC. I tried to find the episode again... but no luck.
If it can be done by current students of HRCC, is there any pre-requisites? And is there any spots still available in May?
Many thanks
Moselle

I saw information about the apprenticeships in the newsletter. It caught my attention as something that would interest me. I haven't taken the course, haven't been around long enough to be eligible for the course (I don't think) and haven't sat down and compared my purchases to the list of requirements. I did everything backwards, or perhaps not, I assume the required purchases are for folks that want the course only, but haven't familiarized themselves with the catalog. My eyes welled when I saw the photo of graduates smiling, and to hear a lecture of how certain herbs came to be used in Hoodoo practice? I must know! My heart sunk when I read that the apprenticeships will end by 2019. Is there time? Is there time to make more guided purchases, meet requirements, complete the course and be eligible for working directly with Ms. Cat before her retirement?

Hi amithyzt,

Yes there is.

Contact the shop to tell them you are interested in the course and to see which of your purchases to date will help fulfill your requirements. They will guide you on how to proceed. You make your purchases over four months, then after completing an interview with miss cat for acceptance into the course, you have a year to complete it. Then you would be eligible for apprenticeship.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

We meet again, Miss Athena,

Thank you, you prompted to reassess my goals and review my purchases with a commitment to round off the required materials specifically. Originally I intended to continue reading the books and forum, try it on my own for a year or so, THEN consider the course. Having just read of her retirement in a few years, there's no way I'd miss an opportunity to learn directly from someone so knowledgeable! I regretted not finding this community sooner, but it seems I've found it just in time. *phew*

I should be eligible for an interview by the end of next month, and I have no doubt I'll have made all the purchases by then- I've been purchasing obsessively since I stumbled into the forum! Lol!

Thank you for guiding me in the right direction, I've appreciated your help so much! You've inspired me to push through and make it happen, and I will always be grateful.

Many Blessings...
