Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

This week in "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," i present a rare look at hard-core methods of cursing and killing with conjure, as collected and published by black folklorists in the 19th century. This unique perspective on African-American magic is unmediated by white academic theorizing, and consists of two dozen spells to bring about illness and loss of life.

ALICE M. BACON: CONJURING FOR SICKNESS AND DEATH, from The Southern Workman, November 1895 (Collected in 1875)

[PATRONS GET THE SECRET URL IN EMAIL ONE YEAR BEFORE IT OPENS TO THE PUBLIC]

This illustrated and annotated web page describes conjure, root doctoring, and witchcraft as practiced among formerly enslaved and recently emancipated people of African descent in the state of Virginia in 1875. Techniques consist of direct consumption of spiritual poisons as well as contact magic through the feet and hands.

The Southern Spirits web site includes material about hoodoo gathered from old books, magazine articles, newspapers, and fragments extracted from novels and short stories, annotated with interpretive and comparative notes. If you are not yet familiar with the public portion of the site, check it out!

OLD MASSACHUSETTS TEA ROOMS!

Tier 3 MAY 28th, 2022

Once more we leap into the past, exploring the tea rooms of bygone America, this time in Massachusetts, a state replete with historical buildings, old mills, hooked rugs, and colonial-style furniture. On today's journey we will visit 16 towns and 16 tea rooms, some long vanished and some still in use as eateries. One was destroyed by a hurricane, and you will even see the sad aftermath of that event.

"Old Massachusetts Tea Rooms" is online now for my Patrons, in gratitude for your support. The public will not view it until May 28th, 2023, at which point it will be unlocked for their amazement.

[THE SECRET URL IS SENT TO PATRONS VIA EMAIL]

This brand new web page marks my return to the project of scanning and uploading hundreds or rare old tea room postcard images and my accompanying research about them.

After a year for Patrons to enjoy, this material will make its way to the public-facing pages of The Mystic Tea Room web site, which is dedicated to the traditional art of fortune telling by tea leaves, also known as tea leaf reading, cup reading, cup tossing, divination by tea leaves, tasseomancy, and tasseography. If you are not yet familiar with the public portion of the site, check it out!

This is an essential part of the "Your Wate and Fate" cluster of pages dealing with antique postcards that portray lucky stones and flowers and the links between these and the signs of the zodiac.

Your Wate and Fate -- J. Marks Fortune Series Number 37

[THE SECRET URL IS SENT TO PATRONS VIA EMAIL]

A companion piece to my 2021 series on chromolitho fortune telling postcards of the early 20th century, this page presents "Fortune Series Number 37" -- known to collectors as "Halloween Witches Fortune Cards" and "Your Fortune Halloween Witch and Owls." In fact, nothing specifically ties this set of cards to Halloween, since every month in the year is shown, and instead of pumpkins, we see a weird landscape with a castle, owls, bats, a raven, and a wizard waving a magical rod over a campfire under the Moon, while before him stands a tail-up black cat, a copper tea kettle, a covered jar of potted meat, a tipped-over wine bottle, a porcelain cup, and a hunk of bread. Each card's text is fully transcribed, as is every card's symbolic gem, flower, zodiac sign, lucky months, and lucky days of the week.

After a year for Patrons to enjoy, this material will make its way to the public-facing pages of the Your Wate and Fate web site, which is dedicated to the unusual but traditional forms of fortune telling. If you are not yet familiar with the site, check it out!

Hello, everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week i have made a HUGE leap forward at The Mystic Tea Room. Fans will remember that there is a little Bibliography of tasseomancy books at the site, consisting of the titles that Gregory Lee White and i had previously cited in the one-page bibliography on page 96 of our own book "The Stranger in the Cup: How to Read Your Luck and Fate in the Tea Leaves," published by the Lucky Mojo Curio Co. in 2020. Well, i have a sizable collection of antique, vintage, and contemporary tea leaf guides, and i have been waiting for a long time to find the time to upload them with reviews and cover scans. This week's Patreon page is lengthy, fun to look at, and a bit spicy to read, as i veer between fan-girling my favourite authors and letting my curmudgeonly side loose in reviewing the worst of the worst. Patrons get this bibliographic monstrosity a full year before the public. Read it all now before i change my mind and tone down some of the curse-words!

"The Tea Leaf Reading Bibliography Expansion Set" is online now for my Patrons, in gratitude for your support. The public will not view it until June 14thth, 2023, at which point it will be unlocked for their intellectual edification..

MORE TEA LEAF READING BIBLIOGRAPHY! (Tier 3 JUNE 21st, 2022)

This week i am continuing my work for The Mystic Tea Room. Last week's huge annotated and illustrated Bibliography of books on tea leaf reading was NOT the end of the ride! I simply ran out of time, and here i am back with the follow-up -- Part Two. This week's installment is a bit shorter than last week's, but it is every bit as thorough. Names and dates have been researched, i have swooned over rarities, and if i don't like a waste of paper, i bluntly say so. Part Two concludes, for now, the enormous task of reviewing every tea-leaf reading book i own, and is available for one year to Patrons only. This gives y'all time to haunt eBay for bargains before the list goes public and the sellers start to adjust their prices to reflect each book's rarity and desirability.

"More Tea Leaf Reading Bibliography" is online now for my Patrons, in gratitude for your support. The public will not view it until June 21st 2023, at which point it will be unlocked for their visual and literary delectation.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

This week in "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," we journey to Georgia to witness the Cunjer Wars of the late 19th century, as reported by the white archaeologist and folklorist Roland Steiner. His perspective on African-American magic is influenced by his years as an enslaver and Confederate soldier, but his reportage is precise and accurate, and not influenced in any way by academic theorizing.

ROLAND STEINER: OBSERVATIONS ON CONJURING IN GEORGIA, 1901, from The Journal of American Folk-Lore, 1901 (Collected from 1878 - 1899)

[PATRONS GET THE SECRET URL IN EMAIL ONE YEAR BEFORE IT OPENS TO THE PUBLIC]

This illustrated and annotated web page describes conjure, root doctoring, and witchcraft as practiced among formerly enslaved and recently emancipated people of African descent in the state of Georgia prior to 1900. Detailed accounts of several cunjer doctors personally known to the author are given, including their names and locations, making this a valuable research document for genealogists. The accounts of several cunjer wars comprise most of the text, but there are dozens of cursing, protective, and curing spells included as well. Techniques involve making cunjer bags, scattering herbs and graveyard dirt, laying tricks in a person's path, and crafting spiritual poisons.

The Southern Spirits web site includes material about hoodoo gathered from old books, magazine articles, newspapers, and fragments extracted from novels and short stories, annotated with interpretive and comparative notes.
