Re: General Herb and Root Magic Questions and Answers
Today i received a message via Facebook asking what spells we can do to magically help save the planet. This was my reply:
I am not sure what i can offer someone in the way of an action-plan to save the natural world — i have been trying to help in that effort since i was in high-school and i feel that nothing that any of us has done, and no amount of team-work, has helped at all. We have perhaps saved a few species from extinction, or slowed the doom down by a decade or so, but still entire eco-systems crash and burn all around us due to human overpopulation, corporate greed, political hegemony, and the bottom line: animals and plants don’t pay taxes, so they have no property rights.
Accomplishment of goals in the magical, spiritual, and witchy way must be accompanied by standing on the barricades, or else spirituality becomes little more than a self-soothing escape from the real, hard, desperate conditions that are besetting the natural world.
In other words, for every hour you spend in meditation or spell-work for the healing of the natural world, you should also spend an hour in direct action. Even writing or reading a letter like this is a form of direct action.

I have a whole Lucky Hand Root that I accidentally broke one of the "fingers" of the hand off. Does this nullify the effects of the root in any way and render it unusable?

Thank you, yeah it felt "unlucky" that I broke the root, and so that was my inclination, but I always hate to waste anything.

Re: General Herb and Root Magic Questions and Answers
Root Work is another term used for Hoodoo because the emphasis is on the Root, the Herb, the natural ingredients that make up the work. There is no Hoodoo without the root. Many come to the forum and ask questions such as "can I just use a candle", or " can I do something simpler"? The question is based on a misconception of Hoodoo and the role natural items play in the process.
Authentic Hoodoo items are made of organic material, which may be essential oils, herbs, minerals, curious etc. Items that are lacking these elements, are not spiritually alive.
Many Hoodoo practitioners understand the "Doctrine of Signature", the concept that Gods signature is on all items, the signature tells how an item is used, whether that be physical health, money, career, love and spiritual. A classic example is a carrot, according to the Doctrine of Signature carrots are good for the eyes, when you cut one open it looks like the retina of an eye. A spiritual connection is Hyssop, its spoken in the Bible, " Wash me in hyssop and be white as snow", this has reputed the herb to be a spiritual cleansing herb.
It is important to incorporate the actual herbs, roots, curios into the work that is being conducted. They carry power related to the work and aid in the prayer being granted. Such as, I would never suggest a love spell without rose, nor would I do court work without little John Chew. Both these are essential to the work, and both are essential to making the corresponding products such as incense, sachet power, oil, mojos etc.
Incorporating the root, the herb, is an intricate part of working Hoodoo, one which cannot be substituted by any other means.

Re: General Herb and Root Magic Questions and Answers
I was gifted a plant called Devils Backbone or mother of thousands... I've been reading up on it a little bit and found some references to it being medicinal. Which leads me to believe that it might have some magical properties.
I checked Miss Cat's herb book and couldn't find anything. It might be more Mexican brujeria...not sure.
Has anyone heard of this plant?
What are its magical properties?
Anyone worked with this plant before?
Has anyone extracted its medicinal properties?
What parts did you use?

Re: General Herb and Root Magic Questions and Answers
Hi, Theredqueen911,
The two plants i know as Mother of Thousands are Kalanchoe daigremontiana, formerly called Bryophyllum daigremontianum, and Kalanchoe laetivirens. Kalanchoe daigremontiana had spotty dark stripes on the backside of the leaf (and thus this species is sometimes called the Devil's Backbone) and Kalanchoe laetivirens is simply green-leafed. They both produce little plantlets along the edges of their leaves and have candelabras of peachy-orange bell-like blooms. Mother of Thousands is native to Madagascar and can be grown in other tropical regions and as potted plants if given a warm place to overwinter.
These and other Kalanchoes are succulents in the Crassula family, related to Jade Plant, Stonecrop, and the like. They are highly toxic and should never be eaten or brewed into tea. They cause deaths among cattle and sheep who eat them. I know of no responsible medicinal use for Mother of Thousands.
Now, common names being what they are, what i know as Mother of Thousands may be an entirely different plant to what you call by that name, This is why i gave you its unique taxonomic binomial, to be sure we are speaking of the same species.

Re: General Herb and Root Magic Questions and Answers
Theredqueen911 --
I know of no magical attributions for Kalanchoe daigremontiana. In most of North America it is a remarkable botanical novelty and a cute (but toxic) houseplant. To my knowledge it has never entered hoodoo folklore or folk magic. Perhaps it has magical ascriptions in its native Madagascar, but i have not heard of any.
In fact, since you asked, i would like to add that i know of no magical symbolism or use in rootwork for any Crassulaceae family members. One reason for this may be that since magical usage often relates to or expands upon medical or culinary use, and Crassulaceae family members have no medical or culinary use, there was no development of a magical use.
Furthermore, since the chief novelty of Kalanchoe daigremontiana, its production of plantlets along the leaf margins, can only be appreciated while the plant is alive, it cannot have entered commerce as a dried herb or root, and can only pass from one hobby gardener to another -- which limits its numbers, and thus any given culture's familiarity with it.
It certainly can be grown out of doors in tropical and sub-tropical places, but the nature of hoodoo is that it developed in the warm temperate regions of the Southern United States, where such a plant would have to be brought indoors during the winter. In this it is similar to a Begonia -- another group of tender house plants with no magical attributions in hoodoo.

Catherine Yronwode,
Thanks again for the info. You made some great points, especially this paragraph:
