Yea, when I feel a candle needs to be cleansed (like if it's really dusty), I'll wipe it down with florida water.

Hello Catherine,
I would make a well for the oils and sprinkle the herbs on top. CM suggested getting the herbs in the holes and I was wondering if there was an easier way of doing that. Any hooo....your are right about my knowledge, I am learning and reading about the traditions and discovering the difference in what I was told by close friends -vs- the propper way of doing things. This is the reason why I sought to learn from someone with your expertise. Deep in my gut I knew that it was more to it and probbly a more triditional way in which would most likely be even more effective. Im Glad I found You! I cant wait for my order seems like it taking forever. It has the books that I need:) I do thank you for what you have made possible through your store, website and class.
Blessing

Making holes on top of candles is one way of doing things by those who work with vigil candles. Poke the holes, drip some oil, then add in your herbs.

Sometimes my candles are dusty or dirty as well, and I use florida water or ammonia (when in a pinch). I let it dry before I put any oils, herbs or anything else on them.

Hi All,
Is it considered cheating to help a candle with a small flame out? like my glass encased jupiter candle, the flame became really small but i didn't want it to die out. so i helped the wick stand up higher and help the burn.. i did it a couple times..
Thank you for your answers in advance!

You can knock the bottom of the candle on the table 3 times to seal it. i generally do a sign of the cross over the candle, and then knocks it the 3 times when I am through dressing it.

Hello everyone, I hope I placed this in the right forum
I would like some advice on what to do. I have been praying to a St. Martha vigil and this is my 6th Tuesday. I have made a few mistakes but feel that I am keeping her altar cleansed well. I have incorporated a cleansing bath before I pray to her and am hoping she responds well to me. I started out with asking her to stop my divorce, to break up his girlfriend and him, and to bring him back to me. Well I decided to write several small petitions but now I am writing a name paper crossed out with my command. Is this ok? I have been really searching for what is proper with this St. and am not getting the information. Also, I wanted to do another petition, should I burn another candle and have two of St. Martha candles burning? I realize I am going to have to go beyond the 9 tuesdays but I am ok with that because I really look forward to praying to her. I have made these changes because of the low flame activity. When I first started the flame was jumping all over, then from the 3rd Tuesday until now my flame is burning low. I read several divinations on the flame and either there is opposition but to keep it going or I am wondering if St Martha is not happy with me!! Could any of you give me some insight?

Re: Candles: Trim, Carve, Load, Petition, Pray, Dress, Light
No you do not have to use several candles. And the 9 Tuesdays of prayer is only one way of working with her. You can keep praying until you feel like your prayers are answered. I think you need to concentrate less on this is number 6 tuesday and so on. Just pray to her and let all that go. You need to get a reading to see what other addition work you need to do, and what the low flame means. Several readers give 10 minute readings.
And read this entire thread when it comes to learning about St. Martha

Wow, came home on Tuesday evening after a long day at work and checked on my St. Martha candle. The candle was burning clear and flame seemed strong and not sluggish. There was alot of activity with jumping and dancing. The only thing I did different was to take a cleansing bath before praying to her and wrote out a name paper. Previously there was a small ring of wax but everything is clear now and burning beautiful. Oh I did burn some incense along with my prayer time which I extended also. What are your thoughts about this change?

Re: Candles: Trim, Carve, Load, Petition, Pray, Dress, Light
The candle's progress can be due to the bath and insense burning, using both are good and ideal to use when doing work. Or it can be the natural process of the candle burning. IE the glass got hot melted the ring of wax, clean burn etc. Candle interpretation often is personal so go with the gut. LM has a section on candle interpretation I would start there.

Hello Everyone!
I hope everyone is doing well.
One of my close friends is African American, and recently I met her God Mother. The lady is really nice, and very wise. I love sitting and just chatting with her about everything in regards to the South. I used to live in the South, and I grew up around a lot of African Americans.
She invited me over for dinner one night, and I went. When I got there; I realized from the objects around the room, and the altars in different corners of the house that she definitely practiced some sort of spiritual exercise. I enquired about a white candle on a honey jar. The candle was white, but had these red streaks, almost orange in color. She informed me that the candle was dressed with oils, and menstral blood. I asked her which oils, and LO and BEHOLD she mentioned Lucky Mojo products. When I went to the restroom, she had a display cabinet with a collection of I would like to say every oil LM has ever made. I smiled, because it is cool to know someone who has the same interest.
She informed me that the honey jar was to sweeten a particular man to a particular woman. The blood she used was the woman's menstral blood. She told me is one of the most powerful forms of dressing a candle.
My question here is: Is it common practice in Hoodoo to dress a candle with blood?
Thank you all so much for sharing the wisdom and knowledge that you each have in order for everyone to learn.
With prayers,
Brida

Candles can be dressed with either menstrual blood or seamen and used for spells to attract a lover or control/dominate a lover in this way. I have not heard of other spells that use blood, nor have I use of blood other than menstrual blood being used in Hoodoo spells, but perhaps Miss Cat will be able to share if there there are spells which utilise other forms of blood.

There are very few conjures or works that use any other blood besides menstrual. However, dressing a candle with oil and sexual fluids is powerful work and combines the straight-foward magick of candle work with the primal power of sex--something that conjure is not afraid of doing.
The sexual fluid is used with the specific intent of drawing that person to you and binding them to you. Good luck.

Not to be too nasty about it, but i know plenty of ladies who . uh ... "use" a penis candle or even a plain candle, especially during their period, and then oil it and burn it. 'Nuff said.
I don't know of any conjure spells that use other blood -- just that "special blood" as we used to call it back in the day.
There is an old English spell to have a man call you that uses a pin-prick of wedding-finger blood on a piece of paper -- but although it has drifted into hoodoo on the cross-cultural currents of book-learning and social contact, that is European folklore, not conjure work.

This is a common spell in the Trolldom tradition as well. Blood from the ring finger of the left hand is drawn and mixed with the name of the person intended (by writing out his/her name on a piece of paper) or put on bread or in any drink and given to the beloved. This is almost always done while reading "As this, my blood, is mixed with..[insert object].., so shall NN´s love be mixed with mine". European magic for sure.catherineyronwode wrote: There is an old English spell to have a man call you that uses a pin-prick of wedding-finger blood on a piece of paper -- but although it has drifted into hoodoo on the cross-cultural currents of book-learning and social contact, that is European folklore, not conjure work.

Hi, Yesterday, I light a candle I dressed myself with herbs and oils. Now, I am realizing I forgot an important herb. Can I go back now and add that herb to the candle that is already burning? It'll still be burning for the next 5 days or so.
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Candles: Trim, Carve, Load, Petition, Pray, Dress, Light
Be careful that your herbs do not catch fire. I think this is a personal choice as I know workers who add oils daily, or at the beginning and ending of candle spellwork.

Yes you can go back and add the herb as long as its along the intentions of the work you set out to do. If not you can always do a vigil light to back up your work, once you have completed the work.

HI babybio,
Personally I would leave the candle burning and begin afresh with a new one. When I fix up a candle the last step for me is the prayer. Through the prayer over the candle I am enforcing the prayers that I have made as I've added each of the herbs. I bring the candle into a unified whole. If you candle is already burning strong, then you can support the work by doing a second candle with all the same herbs and oils and your missed one.

I have noticed on LM candles, or at least on the one I had, that there was glitter on it. Is this glitter or is this magnetic sand? I love it! I feel it adds to the light it gives. If this is glitter what is the purpose?

Its giltter and not magnetic sand, and miss cat explains the reason for glitter on the first page of this thread.

Re: Candles: Trim, Carve, Load, Petition, Pray, Dress, Light
I have been trying to get my candle to burn to complete my Money drawing spell but it keeps going out. There has also been some problems lighting, after several attempts. I have signs that the spell is working. More business and the candle did twist and turn, sway, etc (I also used another regular candle to test for draft, etc). So it is working...I think. But I believe it keeps going out because the way the candle has burned. The top of one side of the candle is like a claw or peaks at the top. The peaked side is quite high. The other side has burned down low to a normal level. I think the wax is not flowing out because of this and therefor extinguishing the flame. The wick is always buried in the wax.
My question is...can I trim the peaks off of the top of the candle away so the candle will burn without going out. Will this affect my work?
Thank you!

Yes, you can work with a candle to keep it lit.

Re: Candles: Trim, Carve, Load, Petition, Pray, Dress, Light
I have a banishing vigil candle going and saw that it got a bit sooty - just a little shadow - at the top. Sure enough it was because the wick was "knotting" and I remembered Miss Cat mentioning "curing" the candle instead of starting a new one.
It was already quite low in its glass case so I couldn't put it out using my fingertips and had to snuff it (I know, I know!
), I trimmed the wick, and somehow managed to relight it, read specific Psalms, and prayed over it.
The flame is back to burning steadily. If anything, it's even brighter than before. The flame isn't flickering, but it's "dancing" (can't think of a better word right now) around a lot. I should also add that the candle has been burning quite fast and if it hadn't been for that soot because of the knot, I wouldn't have started messing with it.
My concern is that I a)didn't trim the wick on a burning candle (hindsight is always 20/20) and b)snuffed the candle.
It doesn't "feel" wrong. In fact, I still feel very strongly about this candle. In the past, my intuition didn't stay quiet when I'd erred where candle or some other casting was concerned, but I'm still putting this out here and waiting to hear your thoughts.

Re: Candles: Trim, Carve, Load, Petition, Pray, Dress, Light
Here's two Gamache questions:
He's suggesting using crucifix candles as altar lights. This doesn't seem terribly practical to me. I can't imagine they were plentiful when he wrote the book, and they're pricey enough as it seems (and he suggests 2 at the corners of the altar). Wouldn't it be more practical to get an appropriate holder with suitable imagery (like, a crucifix painted candle glass or something) and use that? I like the crucifix candles, don't get me wrong about that.
Another one is about his use of "Astral" candles, with two colors. Obviously as a Cancer it would be hard for me to get a combination green and brown candle, so what options are available for that? Just burn the green candle or burn a green and a brown candle side by side?

Wouldn't it be more practical to get an appropriate holder with suitable imagery (like, a crucifix painted candle glass or something) and use that? I like the crucifix candles, don't get me wrong about that.
Another one is about his use of "Astral" candles, with two colors. Obviously as a Cancer it would be hard for me to get a combination green and brown candle, so what options are available for that? Just burn the green candle or burn a green and a brown candle side by side?

Yes, cognitivedissonance, burn the green and brown side by side.

Omg, Thank you for sharing. I have been wondering where in the heck to burn candles, and etc. I have NO privacy in my tiny apt with two kids and a nosey bf. I would have never thought of that. Your a genius.
Thank you St. Jude, for answering all my prayers!

Re: Candles: Trim, Carve, Load, Petition, Pray, Dress, Light
Hi, I've had to temporarily move in with family. I want to continue my work but can't do it indoors undetected. My parent's outdoor property is quite small so any outdoor candles will surely be found. So I decided to burn candles in the park right across from the house.
I live in a cold, somewhat windy climate. So I decided to dig a hole for the candle and bury it up to the lip in the earth so that it is insulated from the cold and then i wrapped a tall cylinder of tin foil around the lip to protect it from the wind.
I do the same when I am staying at my brother's house except I bury it in his vast backyard under a huge pine tree.
Do you see any concerns with these locations or approach?
I certainly don't feel the energy I feel around my altar, but I have to make do.
thanks.

I do love the search feature on this forum.cognitivedissonance wrote:Here's two Gamache questions:

I was thinking the same thing BUT as my mind tends to overcomplicate things I need a tad bit more clarification. When setting up the altar as Gamache suggests--I was kinda thinking you don't have to burn the crucifix candles with every single ritual you perform. Is that right? I was just going to buy two crucifix candles, buy some 7-11 oil to dress them with and leave them there as the altar candles. I mean if I had to burn them with every ritual....I could see how that could get kinda pricey. Is there a reason why you would need to burn those for each ritual you perform? I don't think you do but I tend to miss the common sense stuff when I get in the "trish zone"......it's kinda like the Twilight zone lol.

Hi Trish,
I would say that it depends on what type of ritual you are doing. The Crucifix or cross shaped candles really are symbolic of the Lord and His grace, bounty, and blessing. So there are situations where you would want to invoke those properties for large or important workings. On the other hand there are certainly traditional altars that have special candles which are not lit or are lit only on rare occasions.
Hope that helps!
Blessings,
Bri

You can also use Rosewater (for love drawing work) or orange water (for attraction/any positive drawing work) when cleansing candles and you can also use a bit of your own urine. I do not subscribe much to the idea of cleansing candles unless they are really dirty, but then again, I purchase all my figural and taper candles through LMC and they are not dirty and they are blessed, so there you go!RedRose wrote:Obviously candles need to be cleansed before lighting what would you suggest is the best thing to cleanse them with?
Will plain water do?
good luck,

Hi Elveta,Elveta wrote: What do you mean by "seal or knock the candle?"
I just saw this and Devi's excellent response. What Devi described is one way of knocking a candle, you can also knock a candle at the top of the candle by laying your palm face down on top of the vigil light, and then rapping the hand that is over the candle with your other hand three times. Professional workers will use other methods as well, especially when we are preparing many candles of the same condition or candles in runs.

Re: Candles: Trim, Carve, Load, Petition, Pray, Dress, Light
Hi, I placed an order yesterday for some love drawing oils along with a bunch of other misc oils. I was just going to anoint and light some vigil candles. Today I am thinking I really should have ordered the corresponding love herbs too.
So, how important is it to load or dress your candle with herbs when you have oils that contain herbs?
Do the herbs really give it an added punch or are the oils all it takes?
Thanks

Whether or not to dress vigil lights with herbs and/or glitter and/or to load them with personal concerns, petition papers, etc. is a personal choice.
If you ordered your vigil lights from Lucky Mojo, they would come dressed with herbs and oils and glitter.
When you order Lucky Mojo brand conjure oils, they come with herbs right in them.
For those new to this practice, i recommend purchasing
1) an array of Lucky Mojo oils
2) one or more of our hand-blended herb mixtures (e.g. Peaceful Home Herbs, Love Herbs, Gambler's Gold herbs, Lucky 7 Herbs (7 Herb Bath), Psychic 9 Herbs (9 Herb Bath)‚ or Uncrossing 13 Herbs (13 Herb Bath)
3) at least one dressed candle with your first order, to see how the work is actually done.
With those items in hand, you will understand how the candle dressing is to be carried out on a physical level and you will have the spiritual supplies necessary to do it right.
Good luck!

Here's another suggestion: burn your candles in the BBQ outside. Just close the lid and they are completely protected from the elements. and they will not suffocate since the BBQ is designed to allow the flow of air to get the charcoal. and now in the winter months, it's not likely that anyone will go nose'ing around in there.

Besides inserting oils and powders inside a glass encased candle for love or lust, can the name of the person you want to love you also be inserted inside the candle? Do I just put her name or do I include my name also? If both names go together, do I write her name first and then cross my name on top of hers and insert that into the candle with a petition?

Generally, inserting the petition directly into the candle is going to lead to it being caught on fire. This can lead to it breaking, bad burns, and similar issues.
Most people find it useful to place their petition underneath the candle, or tape it to the glass.
Good luck.

Would putting sand in the pan or cat box in, order to extinguish the candle if it tips over, afect the spell?
My 'Aunties" and others used to do that for their spells. Or made an indorr cactus mini garde with a huge sand area in the middle out of the old time square turkey roast pans (sometimes some rootwork given away as such).
