Re: Bible Verses Psalms Prayer Scripture Questions and Answers

Yes, this is a very helpful thread. I'm realizing how vengeful Hoodoo can be (and discovering how cruel some of the Psalms are).

The vengeful component of Hoodoo frightens people. So I'm creating my Hoodoo practice with the values I endorse. I'd be interested to hear from Hoodoo practitioners who ...

Re: Historical and Contemporary Hoodoo Root Doctors, Practitioners, Fortune Tellers, and Shop Owners

There's a Blues musicians' Forum on which I'm active. They'd appreciate knowing about Hoodoo Jukebox and HOODOO, CONJURE, and ROOTWORK: AFRICAN AMERICAN FOLK MAGIC . I wouldn't do this without permission from Catherine and LMForum leaders, but I'd like to cut & paste sections from here to that Forum ...

Re: Spells to Fix Problems With Boss, Manager, Co-Worker

This is a really painful situation you're in. And you're naturally feeling trapped and powerless with it. There is power, however, in sending this woman healing energy. She's stuck in what was done to her (what was done to her is probably much more than you know) and she needs release from that ...

Re: Historical and Contemporary Hoodoo Root Doctors, Practitioners, Fortune Tellers, and Shop Owners

Doug, i've been pretty much 'buked and scorned by academics for the past 20 years. Some have asked for my time, and a few of those have even cited or quoted me -- but only as a shop-keeper, never as a researcher, because i am of no use to them in academia. You see, i have no letters behind my name ...

Re: Historical and Contemporary Hoodoo Root Doctors, Practitioners, Fortune Tellers, and Shop Owners

Friends, let me set the context for the point I want to make. I've been reading casually about Hoodoo for years. Mainly tangent to my passion for Blues history. I've visited Hoodoo stores in Atlanta and New Orleans, and done field research on Blues musicians in Anniston, Alabama and the Mississippi ...

I've been a student of the Blues for years and have always wanted a collection of Hoodoo-themed tunes. But til I got this collection, probably the first such anthology, I didn't realize how many Hoodoo-referencing Blues tunes there were out ...

Re: Ethics and Moral Justifications for Spell Work

Vestapol- To me, hoodoo is a very generic term....Though they may not be written down in formal ways, these ethics already exist.

Thanks for the reminder about how diverse the Hoodoo practices and values are. Diversity is part of the folk process, the oral tradition. Which is exactly why the ...

Re: Ethics and Moral Justifications for Spell Work

Catherine, thanks for the careful thought you put into this...your care for preserving Hoodoo traditions is clear.

Yeah, I kinda worry that professionalization and ethics might compromise the folk process. But your refusal to see folk process and professionalism as mutually exclusive is reassuring ...

Re: Ethics and Moral Justifications for Spell Work

I am not sure that i follow your claim that ethics by definition deals with professional codes of conduct. Merriam-Webster says,"the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation," and that's good enough for me.

AIRR is not the first professional group of hoodoo ...

Re: Bible Verses Psalms Prayer Scripture Questions and Answers

This may be helpful...that's my hope anyway...that we are developing a science base for the core strategies of Hoodoo (like conscious use of intuition) and for some specific practices. And things are lookin good for both intuition in general and distance-intentionality (such as prayer) in particular ...

Re: Ethics and Moral Justifications for Spell Work

Vestapol,

For many root doctors, the practice of hoodoo is indeed a profession. The engagement of magical work as a profession has been documented in African American society since before the emancipation of the slaves. Asa profession, root doctoring was documented in Africa before enslavement ...

Re: Hi from Vestapol

Doug,

A comparison of African American folklore with the folklore of various regions of Africa shows more similarities to Central African (specifically Bantu/Kongo) languages and customs than to Western African (Yoruba/Ewe/Fon) languages and cultures. Both can be found, as can traces from other ...

Re: Ethics and Moral Justifications for Spell Work

Ethics : a formal profession's written code specifying Values, Principles, and Procedures, used for self-policing and to protect the community of clients.

Morality: family, individual, or religious definitions of good behavior and bad.

We're in the middle of these. Neither a profession or a ...

Hi from Vestapol

Hi, everyone. My name is Doug and I use Vestapol as my nom de Hoodoo . I came to Hoodoo through childhood passion for the Blues and African-American folklore in general. Re: Ethics and Moral Justifications for Spell Work

Morality is our family or individual sense for what is good and what is bad behavior; or it is a religion's list, like the Ten Commandments.

Law is a formal, public community's list of what most agree is good and bad behavior.

Ethics is a profession's code of values, principles, and ...
