For a target who has a strong sense of smell, and when laying scented sachets and oils, how is it possible to lay tricks when they have such a strong sense of smell and also when laying tricks in sachet or incense form doesnt work, what else could one do to affect a target when they touch something?

Normally I know signs from candle work, but I did a Breakup Vigil on a couple. I fixed it on my own before Halloween. But the issue im having is the candle is dark and soot black all over the glass. I'm sure that means I may have to start over or the work isnt going to manifest right?
