How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
My intent was not to step on toes. Yes, not all forms of magic, in fact not many that I am aware of use crystals, or minerals of any kind, new age wiccan and some American Indian shaman use them, but they are used in several forms of energy work/healing and are reused hundreds of times after cleansing. My post was mainly in the form of a question, not as a all knowing response.
It is my understanding (from my studies and personal experience) that crystals and rocks/minerals have a natural energy that is individualized, but that they can be "programed" with the intent of the healer/magi and that by doing so they are given the power to do the work of magic or healing. and that the energy that was given them or that they absorb in their working can then be cleansed and then they can be re-programed for another use.
I don't know if this corresponds to any hoodoo beliefs or not, and that is basically what I was asking.

Again, no offense taken and no offense intended, but the concept of "programming" a lodestone is just not something in hoodoo.
Salt, yes: "Salt does what you tell it to do."
But Lodestones? No, because "Lodestones are alive." That is, they are ENTITIES. It is the custom to select them with care, name them, and consider them as one would a working pet -- a hunting dog or milk cow or draft horse or mule. They WORK for you. They are not "things" -- they are individuals.
For instance, i have two money Lodestones -- Old Trey and Piggy. They have been with me for decades. I feed them magnetic sand and they work for me. I also have one large love Lodestone -- My True Love -- who lives under the bed.
That's just how we do it, brother.
What i wrote in the earlier portions of this thread, from 2009 to the present, is as honest as i know and as true as i know. Also, on my "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice" page on Lodestones, you will see my thinking on the subject or "repurposing" Lodestones. The page is here:

Thanks, I understand your usage, maybe the use of the word programing was not a good word to use, I ask the stone(s) to help me with what I wish to accomplish. I call that programing, your term might be prayer, or pertaining, I do this from an altered state and with emotion. I consider everything as being alive, mineral/plant/animal and the Earth itself as well as the moon and stars.

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
Well, language is slippery, but in preserving and popularizing a culturally specific way of working, i find it valuable to use the terminology that is traditional to the culture. In this case, as a young Jewish girl who was graciously invited to learn about hoodoo from African American elders, i have reasons to insist that the terminology -- which indicates the mind-set and the ways of working -- be preserved. If icould learn it, you could too. I am inviting you in to a way of working that has been around for a long time, but to become part of it, you will need to accept it on its own terms, with its own terminology. Love of the culture encourages it. Respect for the tradition demands no less.

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
I agree, as stated before I am new at hoodoo, so I am not that aware of all the terminology used, and so was using what I am familiar with, is there someplace on this great website, a glossary or definition of terms? I am sure that there are others that are also unclear of what some of the terms mean and what the proper terminology is.
Thanks again for your prompt replies.

Wow, galeb, you have opened up an interesting idea -- a web page specifically devoted to terminology. I have never written such a page, but this is an inspiring thought.
The topic of terminology is roughly covered throughout my writings (and those of Deacon Millett) on an "as needed" basis. One page where you will find general terminology discussed is:

I read through the article again, and found some of the terminology, but still a one source that explains it would be great, I will be looking forward to it. I plan on taking your course if you will have me. I want to learn as much about hoodoo as I can.
Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
Hi,
I see that you can't re-purpose lodestones, but can you reuse them for the same purpose?
I used a pair of lodestones in a lavender love spell without a specific target. I've now met someone and want to draw her to me. I was wondering if I could re-do the spell or do one similar and directly targeting the 'lover' lodestone as her.
Thanks!

Hello AJx0x0x0
You could try it. Personally, I prefer new ones (in the event that the lodestone had someone else in mind for you). But that's just me.
Wishing you the best
Take care

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
I was thinking about this and have to ask... sorry if it has been asked before. I did a search and did not see it listed.
I am looking for the use of Ashes in Hoodoo.
Wood ash is the residue powder left after the combustion of wood, such as burning wood in a home fireplace.
Which makes me think this might be one way to implode a situation "combustion" or the by product of fire.

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
There are several uses of ashes in Hoodoo, mainly the ashes from incense to the ashes from a candle ritual, cat wrote about some of their uses here (http://www.luckymojo.com/incense.html)
Your question has been merged into the general discussion of ashes in hoodoo, and more information will be found if you start reading this thread from the top, and follow the links.

Thanks so much...
What about using fireplace ash or cigarette ashes as a ingredient for like a vinegar bottle/jar or war jar.. I would think that might put a dirty burned up spin on things perhaps.

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
greeneyes,
You seem to want to create your own little system of personal symbolism, based on your own imagination, and then to have us all accept it as a valid way of working. To me, your posts sound as if you were a kid, first saying, "Let's pretend that fireplace ashes can be used 'to implode a situation'" and, when that didn't go over so well, saying, "Okay, then let's pretend that fireplace ashes can be used to 'put a dirty burned-up spin on things,' okay?" -- and hoping that the other kids will say, "Okay."
A more formal description of this way of thinking is called working by unverified personal gnosis.
Gnosis means "knowledge" -- and unverified personal gnosis is an academic way of saying, "You made that up and while you may believe it, there is no evidence that anyone else in the actual historically-known tradition you are describing ever believed it or did what you are describing that way. Sorry."
You see, unverified person gnosis is not how folk magic works, exactly.
Sure, all of the symbolic concepts in hoodoo came from someone's inventive mind, in that they are culturally-based, human-transmitted concepts, and not observable natural law in the way that math or physics are natural laws. In fact, the inventive cultural basis of every one of the world's many systems of folk magic is obvious, when you compare one region's folk-magic to another's and see how they differ, both in materia magica and in "ways of working."
However, in addition to the socio-cultural novelty inherent in each system of folk magic, there is also a long-running thread of stability in folk-magic, of conformity to the basic principles inherent in the system. Thus, when new technologies enter a culture -- photography, or audio recording devices, or candles, or packaged granulated sugar, to name four obvious examples -- they are, slowly or in a burst of popular enthusiasm, adopted into the magical culture, often within a few decades of their introduction.
For example, paraffin candles became commercially available after the U.S. Civil War, and were available in varied colours by the early 1920s, but it was not until 1936 that anyone observed hoodoo root doctors identifying certain colours of candles with certain spirits and certain mental, emotional, or spiritual conditions, and it was not until 1941 that the first book to deal with the topic extensively was published. Yet by the next year -- 1942 -- when a second, and then a third book that listed the meanings of candle colours were published in national distribution, the entire black culture of root doctors and their clients accepted this new methodology -- and it has remained a stable part of hoodoo ever since.
Now let's go back to your fireplace ashes. Fireplaces are not new technology, and ashes have been used in hoodoo since its far African origins -- but NOT in the way you have devised. It is highly unlikely at this late date, with fireplaces already on the decline as a technology, that your novel concept of their meaning will suddenly take African American conjure culture by storm, the way the concept of candle colour meanings did between 1936 and 1942.
So, since ashes already have a use in hoodoo, let's look at that use ... and let's start with African traditions, the basis of so much of the "ways of working" in hoodoo (as opposed to the "what is worked with," which are often natural curios and goods of Native American and European lore and legend).
In Africa, it is a commonplace among many tribes to use ashes as a form of concentrated spiritual marker (a "personal concern" or a "magical link" in the broadest senses of those terms) which conveys the essence of a plant, a place, a thing, or a person into a spell, rite, trick, or spiritual supply. You can read about this African usage of ashes in magic in any of the many anthropological books dealing with African sorcery and witchcraft of the 19th and 20th centuries, such as (to name a favourite one right off the top of my head, without going to my library) "Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic among the Azande" by E. E. Evans-Pritchard (Oxford, 1937). Also you can see the use of ashes in the mooyoo or magical "load" in the nkisi ndoki figures of Gabon and adjacent regions. (See http://www.readersandrootworkers.org/wiki/Nkisi_Ndoki for details.)
As expected, this African way of working with ashes has survived in hoodoo in America -- for instance, during the 1930s the folkorist Harry Hyatt recorded a spell from an African American informant in which the name of a person was burned to ashes and used to represent the person in making a compound to be laid on the ground for foot track magic. During the 1960 - 1970s i too learned many such ways of working with the ashes of names, including a way to triple-refine a name by repeatedly burning it with Quassia bark as a sort of last-ditch or desperate substitute for an actual personal bodily concern. (See my book "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic" for details.)
So, in conclusion, ashes have a long history of use in hoodoo -- but they have never been given the meaning or use which you have made up for them -- and since this is a long-standing and wide-based tradition, i believe that your best position with respect to it is to learn from others and become a part of the culture rather than spin out your own novel ideas and expect people to suddenly jump on your train of thought. They are already riding other trains of thought, and my advice to you is, in the words of Jesse Fuller, "Get your ticket at the station, best get on board."
Good luck.

Mrniceguy, quartz crystals are not commonly used in hoodoo; this is a European/Euro-American New Age custom. It doesn't have much to do with the magical practices African-American Protestant Christians, whose culture and traditions are the bedrock and taproot of hoodoo.
Try putting their clothing or photo under your pillow (or in your pillowcase). Dress the item with a little Psychic Vision Oil or smoke it in Psychic Vision incense; then you can expect to dream true about them.

that's a very complicated way to get information about another. you could always just ask a deck of cards or any other form of divination as well. what you're essentially wanting is for the quartz to be an information conduit - and that can really only be done by binding a spirit that you're in communication with into that quartz and having the spirit report back to you. but on the same note-- unless the person is completely shielded -- the spirit should be able to access info for you regardless.

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
Has anyone ever heard of the use of Bible ash as a magical ingredient? I have run across this idea four times in the past year (twice on Internet and twice on folk magic podcasts). I have never heard of this before. I would assume that it has to be a hoodoo or powwow item because of the use of the Bible, but I have a suspicion that someone just doesn't know what they are talking about. I can't even guess what a burnt Bible would add to a spell. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? I saw it used in a spell for personal empowerment and one for academic success without an explanation as to why it was being included. I'm just curious.

Yes actually. Using bible verses burnt to ash is a traditional way of working for some folks. Some workers will write their petition over a bible verse that refers to or addresses the condition, burn it to ash, and use it in powders, oils, to dress candles, to blend with incense, etc...
Momma Starr speaks a lot of burning bible verses to ash for use in spell work. She is a very traditional southern worker and member of AIRR.
Many blessings!

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
stones are not as common in hoodoo as they are in other types of working like Wicca which uses stones in a lot of work, and crystals to help with their work. Hoodoo tends to use herbs, roots, minerals, animal curios etc. LM does carry a lot of stones however and you can use them but its not traditional hoodoo. LM definitely has the highest quality items you will ever find. If interested in psychic work try the LM psychic vision line to enhance your natural abilities. Including the oil, incense and mojo!

Lucky Mojo is a full-service occult sop. Tektites, as noted above, have no connection to hoodoo, but we get customers in the shop looking for rocks, crystals, and minerals all the time, so we carry them.

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
Hello Everyone!
I am new to this forum and also new to using Lodestones.
I purchased a medium Lodestone & magnetic sand about 6 weeks-2 months ago. I baptized it in whiskey, said prayers over it & placed it in a dish with the items to help intensify it's purpose (hair, nail clippings, pictures etc.). I have been feeding it daily and used the last of the magnetic sand several days ago, as I thought my spell/ answers would be coming to fruition?! *The stone was purposed for a specific "date" dealing with acceptance into a specific program/school.
I did not hear the "GREAT"/Positive news that I was hoping for ;-( While I still have HOPE & FAITH that the situation will turn out like I hoping for, I have stopped feeding the Lodestone because I ran out of magnetic sand! I guess I got ahead of myself & maybe fed it a little too much at the end thinking my spell was done....
Should I thank the lodestone & bury the lodestone NOW?? or should I order more magnetic sand & continue to feed it till I hear my POSITIVE news?? I feel funny now that it has sat for 4+ days with NO feeding ;-/
**Also, I have backed up my work by ordering a set of 3 candles that are still burning. Or maybe do I purchase a NEW stone and maybe do a new spell??
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Tracy

Hello, GucciGirl13 ,
Sorry to hear that you weren't successful with this spell
My suggestion to you is to try a new lodestone. Because you didn't have luck, loss faith, and didn't feed it, you and the stone may not get along well.
Thank it and bury it and buy a new one. This time, take really good care of it as if it were your child!
Good luck!

The re-use of magnetic sand is very common. Simply brush it off, wash the lodestone in whiskey or Hot's Cologne, and start feeding it again.

Thank you Catherine & Miss Aida for your replies. I did read about re-using the magnetic sand and am currently trying that. However, I just ordered a new, Larger stone and going to give that a shot too. I will thank & bury the current stone....

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
Hello; I am going to see a apartment I really want tomorrow at 12:30pm (EST). Can anyone tell me how I can use a single lodestone to help me in getting this apartment if possible. Also if so how do I prepare my lodestone? I already have a lodestone for money so I have all items I think I will need to get this done....Thank you in advance.
Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
Hello, Godisgood-191
Well, first, take a look at this page to get some familiarity with the lodestone
www.luckymojo.com/lodestone.html
I would use a picture of the apartment and try to collect some dirt from either the inside of the apartment and/or dirt from the property to use with the lodestone.
But, don't forget to wash your lodestone and reprogram it. Although I personally don't reuse mine (but that's me) for other purposes).
Read the page I gave you for more spell ideas.
Wishing you the best and hope you get that apartment
Take care

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
Just an update on my situation about my Lodestone. I wasn't sure if I was having luck with my first stone, as I did not get the results I wanted for my daughters & received rejection letters to the schools we applied to. So I took the advice of one poster & Thanked the stone and buried it. I also purchased a 2nd LARGER stone & was much more careful with this one
I baptized, named it & set a petition under it (written on the back of a pic of my daughters). I fed "Casper" everyday, talked to him etc. He completely pulled through for me (or maybe it was a combination of "Wishes" work too - my buried stone).
Anyhow, I just wanted to say thanks to the advice from those of you on the forum and Thank you to the Lord above for answering my prayer! Also, thank you to WISHES & CASPER for their work!!!

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
Thank you Miss Aida for the advice. I have unused lodestone so I will start there. Reusing lodestone for me makes no sense, because if lodestone are alive why would I want to confuse my lodestone. Please understand this is just my opinion. Miss Aida what if I have a lodestone like for money and it doesn't seem to be working can I wash it with whiskey and start working with that same lodestone for money of course. By the way I didn't get the apartment the day I was suppose to see it they called me to tell me it was rented the night before. I'm not giving up my faith is stronger then that.
Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
Hello, Godisgood-191 ,
Oh, I am so sorry that you didn't get the apartment. Sometimes, things don't happen for a reason.
I remember I couldn't get an apartment (years ago when I was younger) ANYWEHERE. Then I was finally accepted into a complex ( 2 years later) and met my future husband. So, like I had said, sometimes there's a better plan out there for you
Yes, you can reprogram it for the same purpose.
Wishing you the very best

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
Update about apartment. Well I thought I saw the light at the end of the tunnel, but I was wrong. Prayed for a specific apartment and I found it. Went on February 27th gave the landlord a month and half deposit excitement. At that time he tells me he forgot the lease. On March 4 I gave him a half months rent cause I was going to move on the 15th of March, because that's when the apartment would be ready. Once again the landlord forgot the lease. On March 4th at 7:20pm the landlord calls me to meet him the next day. I'm thinking he has the lease. Ready for this....the landlord went behind my back and rented the apartment out for more money and met up with me to return all my money I gave him. I am so depressed right not I have no idea what to do next.

Regarding lodestone for a apartment. What if I don't have a specific apartment yet. Can I take or draw a picture of a house and add some attraction oil to it and place the lodestone on top of the picture or drawing. Another question if it's not a bother. What other oils can I use and what color candle. I can use all the advice everyone has to offer. Thank you in advance.

Hi,
I was wondering if I could take some used high John roots, wash them with whiskey and then use them to make high John oil. The roots were used in money mojo bags. I make two that didn't seem to work. So I want to know if I could crush those roots to make my own high john oil.

novice,
These roots are difficult to crush, but you could do that, yes. This would ome under the idea of "re-using roots" rather than "re-purposing roots" them, by the way.

I need to know if there is a proper way to collect dirt from a busy place, like a supermarket, school, bank, hospital, etc/
Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
Hello, Goldentouch,
it would be similar to collecting graveyard dirt: http://www.luckymojo.com/graveyarddirt.html
remember, these places have Spirits so you would still ask first, collect the dirt, and then make an offering (usually, a dime).
I hope this helps

Hello, Spiritual Serenity,
If you visit the Lucky Mojo shop, they will help you with this query.
Personally, I trust all Lucky Mojo products and have bought them with complete confidence.
If you are asking us to help you purchase a product from a store other than Lucky Mojo, then this is not the correct forum to post such a question.

Be sure to check out the Book Section, as Lucky Mojo carries some great books that can help you get started. Two of the books that I can think of off the top of my head are:
The Book of Stones by Simmons & Ahsian
Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem & Metal Magic by Scott Cunningham
Also, be sure to check out their Mineral Section to see the various stones that they offer.

Help! I need someone's advice or anything in this matter...
I've been working on my ex and seems like my candles are working and it's getting thru but he recently came back from a Mexico trip, which he brought me an Amethyst stone, and I'm sure he got one for himself too, well he told me to research the stone. I did which it says it protects u from spiritual, psychic work....
Does this mean it will protect him from my work if he has one? Does anyone know anything about this stones? Seems like my work is affecting him though... So not sure if this stone is that powerful, he gave me one too, which I take it as a sign that he misses me....
Thank u in advance!

Hello, Luckyyone,
This is true from what I know about Amethyst. BUT it MUST be on your person!
You might want to try and get him to give it to you. Tell him you want to clean it.
That's all I know to suggest
Sorry

I was always taught that it had to be touching your skin (as in Jewelry, mojo hands, etc.

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
I was interested to see what are some of your favorite crystals to use? Crystals carry a lot of magic and I think they can be helpful if you're needing to be discreet.
My absolute favorite is amethyst. I sleep with it every night for protection while I'm sleeping and to help with dream recall. It also soothes my anxiety if I am feeling overwhelmed. I also like selenite as its energy is very calming as well and it gives me an overall sense of balance and clarity. If you are in need of some luck or help with opportunities, I suggest carrying green aventurine with you. I used it in a mojo bag & I had it on me when I submitted my resume. I got a call back right away. I had it with me on the interview and I was hired on the spot!

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
I work with crystals every day, and I make jewelry with them so I kinda have a good relationship with them.
My all time fave is jet (I live in England and have found many pieces when beachcombing Whitby beaches, and they are the best I've had!) as I find it very calming, protective and empowering.
The only one that I struggle with is rainbow moonstone...I can't wear that sucker for more than half hour otherwise I'm crying, confused and very self-loathing. I know it's good for the emotional side, but it brings up so much deeply buried **** that I end up a mess. Such a pity because it's my fave to look at due to the gorgeous play of colour.

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
I have a similar question, but this is in regards to reusing an amethyst and moss agate.
I performed a happiness spell last night and petitioned St. Dymphna. The amethyst I had is pretty big and since this will be ongoing work since I have struggled with anxiety all my life, and I don't ever really see myself being "done" with the spell, if I could reuse the crystals after cleansing them or if I should make up a little altar specifically for Dymphna and place the crystals on that altar.

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
Hello imtempel,
I don't work with crystals, but I'd say that if you think this is going to be an ongoing spell, why don't you just dedicate this amethyst to be the crystal you use for this work? I think the altar is a really nice idea. But whatever you decide with the altar, I say the crystals could be reused for a purpose other than combating anxiety if you cleanse them.
P.S. Speaking as someone who also has anxiety, I hope you have considered getting some professional medical help in addition to doing spellwork. No one deserves to deal with that. Take care

Thank you sisterjean! I've been thinking about it all day and I'm gonna go forth with the altar, as I already feel Dymphna's loving kindness and I'd like to honor her and work with her regularly, especially since it is an ongoing issue and an issue of many people I am close to. I have went to therapy and got biofeedback for anxiety and PTSD which made my condition go from severe to manageable, although I feel it still hinders me in some areas of life. I appreciate the empathy

Hello firerobinc0
I am not aware of uses for magnesium in hoodoo. As for Iron the most common use of this is in lodestones which are composed of iron that has become magnetic. These are used to attract what you desire. You can read about them here (http://www.herb-magic.com/lodestone-small-single.html).
Peace~

Re: How to Use Crystals, Stones, Rocks, Minerals Questions and Answers
Hi! I created a mojo bag to draw a new love, inside is a pair of matched lodestones.
I thought the condition oil I used to five spot my petition and feed the bag was a come to me oil (the label came off) but it was in fact a love me oil that a mixed with a bit or compelling.
I'd like to remake my mojo bag to draw a new love, can I reuse the lodestones?
