Rattlesnake Rattles Questions and Answers

Good afternoon LM Family!

I understand from reading Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic that rattlesnake rattlers are considered to be valuable.

That being said, a rancher friend of ours is experiencing a rattlesnake infestation. A bunch of the fellas (not including my hubby-due to my objections) are planning on getting together to...well...er...ahem "get rid of the problem" to put it mildly.

Please don't be mad at me for that, I have no say in the matter, apparently they have to deal with the rattlesnake issue quite often protecting their livestock and livelihood.

At any rate, my question is would it still be appropriate to collect the rattlers as a magical curio (considering that these animals are going to be hunted down)?

And if so, can anyone tell me how to remove the rattlers? Would I try to salvage any other parts? For instance- would you just cut it off? I'm not clear as to where their venom is...is it located all throughout their bodies? I don't want to inadvertently poison myself! (gulp!)

My hubbies friend says that last weekend when he was out at the ranch there were dozens of them... (now, this could be some extravagant male exaggerating but I don't know for sure.) I don't anticipate needing dozens of rattlers and/or snake parts so is there some kind of way to donate them to LMCC? (If they were wanted, naturally!) Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hope everyone is having a blessed day today!

Thanks in advance for your responses :)

This forum is here to help people chose and use Lucky Mojo spiritual supplies. Lucky Mojo does not carry Rattlesnake Rattles that are gotten by mass killings, or what some people call "Rattlesnake Round-Ups," where they kill dozens at a time to destroy their hibernation nests.

And to head off any hurt feelings, I am not saying any of this in the spirit of meanness.

I just got my HHRM book (Awesome reading! ) and ran across an entry on rattlesnake rattles. I happen to have several rattles I have had since I was a teen. I had no idea they were used as a curio. Where can I find more on the use of this curio in Hoodoo?

Rattlesnake rattles entered hoodoo as a curio through African Americans having contact with Native Americans, who revered then greatly in spiritual practices. Look here in my online book "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice"

http://www.luckymojo.com/rattlesnake.html

By the way, about 10 years ago we stopped carrying Rattlesnake Rattles in our catalogue due to the horrific harvesting practices of our suppliers. They were smoking and burning the snakes out of their hibernation dens and shooting them en masse. This kind of so-called hunting (genocide, actually) had led to many species of Rattlesnake becoming endangered species in their own former territories and habitats, and we could not participate in such organized slaughter of an entire species.

However, recently we purchased a small and very old LIFETIME COLLECTION of rattlesnake rattles. These were sold to us by someone whose uncle had killed snakes around his farm and pastures for years, and had kept the rattles in a box. We are selling these as what they are -- Vintage Rattlesnake Rattles. We feel right about doing this, as no mass-killings were done to accumulate this lifetime trove.

Look for these Vintage Rattlesnake Rattles to be added to the Lucky Mojo Complete Inventory very soon. They will be sold one-to-a-customer, as we always used to sell them, and they will not be restocked when they are gone, unless we find another lifetime stash of this sort again.

Please note my rattles were nor taken in any 'round up' situation. In my native state rattlesnakes were plentiful and none were taken in a cruel act. I am against all animal cruelty .

All of the Rattlesnake Rattles I have came from a private farm owner that from time to time has to kill a random rattlesnake in his property. I feel much more comfortable with these than farmed or harvested rattles.
