It's also used in an old school conjure for court cases for that very reason. When a person is facing overwhelming odds, a conjure doctor would have them chew guinea peppers while saying prayers asking the Lord to take mercy upon the person and help them get out of the trouble. The chewing of the guinea peppers acted as a sort of penances while gaining the pity of the Lord. The other thing that is chewed is Little John to Chew which is used to break jinxes or for court cases, which is likewise spicy-hot..

This type of work is interesting as is found in other folk traditions with the idea of inflicting symbolic pain on the petitioner as a means of fulfilling the debt they owe and earning the pity of the spirits.
