Sampson Snake Root Echinacea Questions and Answers

Unread post by kevin9 » Thu Mar 19, 2009 3:57 am

My dad used to gather the Echinacea or Sampson Snake Roots "in the wild" so to speak. But I never knew where the plants were. And I'm assuming what he was calling "snake root" actually was echinacea. :? I do know every time I started to come down with a cold, I was told "Go chew you some snake root". But he always brought the root home and never the flower. Now....we're part Indian and we don't talk much about "medicine" in a magical sense. And if he thought that was what I was up to, he might throw a fit. That's why I was wondering if the root would be just as good to use as the flower.

All parts of the Echinacea plant are medically active. In hoodoo, the root is considered the more magically active portion.

Our propensity to favour roots is what has earned African American conjure the regional name of "root work." -- that is, magic and medicine in which roots are notably used in preference to other portions of the plant.

In the Appalachian European-American tradition, a medico-magical practitioner will often be called a "yarb doctor" -- that is, an herb doctor. The use of the word "herb" here reflects the Anglo-American inclination to use green and floral portions of plants more than roots.

Hi I read in one of the book to use the snake root in food. How do I use it, chop it up?

Zippy1982,

It can be used in a tea so it should be ground up or finely chopped. I usually blend it with other herbs depending on what the goal is. In magical use in a mojo hand, I would leave it whole if not too large.
