Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

Image

This week i am opening a one-year-old Patreon page to the public -- "Wheels and Spinners" at Your Wate and Fate. I am also creating a new page in "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog" as a one-year Patreon exclusive for those who financially support my writing.

PATSY MOSES: CONJURE DOCTORS OF TENNESSEE AND TEXAS Before and After Freedom, from Texas Slave Narratives (Collected in 1937)

[PATRONS GET THE SECRET URL IN EMAIL ONE YEAR BEFORE IT OPENS TO THE PUBLIC]

This illustrated and annotated web page describes conjure, root doctoring, and witchcraft among enslaved and emancipated people of African descent in Knoxville Tennessee and rural Texas. The narrator, Patsy Moses, was born into slavery and was interviewed by a member of the Federal Writer's Project in 1937, when she was 74 years old. She was a gifted story-teller, and her memories of the conjure remedies told to her by her grandfather Ned Butler are beautifully recounted. Her mythological tale of the origins of the Barred Owl, as well her tales of Hallowe'en games, the interpretations of dreams, and how to select and use lucky charms and amulets, provide rare and wonderful glimpses into the folkloric beliefs of African-American conjure in the mid-to late 19th century.

The Southern Spirits web site includes material about hoodoo gathered from old books, magazine articles, newspapers, and fragments extracted from novels and short stories, annotated with interpretive and comparative notes. If you are not yet familiar with the public portion of the site, check it out!

My Patrons have access to exclusive threads at the Lucky Mojo Forum which enable discussions with me about the ongoing Patreon page publications. If you are a Patron, come on over to the Private Forum for "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog" and we can talk about the project:

Chinese rabbit ornaments carved of cow bone, from my collection. At top a small curled-up rabbit-in-the-moon bead, at bottom a flying rabbit plaque. These are just some of the many magical and symbolic Chinese bone items we carry in our amulet department -- but don't be surprised if they go in and out of stock or are found in limited quantities. Our supplies of hand-made Chinese goods has been erratic since the pandemic, and folk-art in general is getting more and more difficult to source.

French sterling silver lady's brooch, circa World War One, from my collection; the emblems are a lucky horseshoe, two clusters of lucky four-leaf clovers, and the cross of Lorraine, a symbol of the French nation. Fine quality pieces of "sweetheart jewelry" such as this were sold as souvenirs to British and American soldiers during the war, in which American troops participated from April 6, 1917 through November 11, 1918; the Cross of Lorraine figures in many of them as a locational remembrance, signifying that the item was made by a French jeweler and commemorating the debt France owed to those who came from abroad to free France from German control. I found this pin in an antiques shop in northern California in the late 1990s. How it got there is an story that it cannot tell, but it was probably brought home by a returning veteran as a gift for his lover. I hope they married and had a long and happy life.

Many amulets and talismans like this may be found in the book i co-wrote with Gregory Lee White, "How to Use Amulets, Charms, and Talismans in the Hoodoo and Conjure Tradition." Nepalese Phurba and Kartri from my collection. These are important symbols of Vajrayana Buddhism, worn for protection and spiritual liberation. Chinese bracelet carved of wood, from my collection. The calligraphic ideograms are applied as transfers and varnished to secure them. There are 18 beads, a "short form" version of the sacred number 108. At left is a bead that represents a container of life-prolonging elixir. Hey. I was wondering what a good amulet(for a necklace) for stopping bad luck(crossing, curses, jinxes, hexes, ect) and bringing in good luck(open road, attraction, fast luck, ect) and protecting you from bad luck either on you or stopping it from attaching itself to you. I looked on the site, but had a hard time going through all of them and the search didn't understand what I was asking. Could someone post a few that would work?

I'll be honest, it would be cool to have it stop any bad luck from happening and bringing in good luck to replace it. If something bad could happen, it won't and something good will happen. Thanks

mickeymsb,

There are many that meet this requirement and they may vary based on culture, region of the world, and your preference. For example, in Italy the Italian horn (corno) is protective and also brings protection to the wearer.

Italian Horn: https://www.luckymojo.com/corno.html

Others may carry the Hand of Hasma which is protecting from evil while also a lucky charm for the wearer.

Hasma Hand:https://www.luckymojo.com/hamsahand.html
The Eye in Hand Amulet: https://www.luckymojo.com/eyeinhand.html

Lucky Mojo has produced a book on this very topic, each page filled with Amulets and Talismans with a description of use.

How to use Amulets, Charms and Talismans: https://www.luckymojo.com/amuletscharms ... smans.html

Hi Mickeymsb,

I second Jaydee, but Lucky Mojo Curio Company has a massive selections of amulets and charms. https://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatamulets.html, what you can do once you are on that page hit ctrl F on your keyboard for the find box to come up and type in the name or purpose of charm you are looking for (Luck, Money, Protection).

Papa G and Miss cat also wrote a book on the topic, HOW TO USE AMULETS, CHARMS, AND TALISMANS IN THE HOODOO AND CONJURE TRADITION
https://www.luckymojo.com/amuletscharms ... smans.html

Best of luck,
Christopher

Hey. I was wondering if I got a charged necklace intended to protect me while I uncross myself, when I put it on, will I feel that protection and will I notice the things the crossings has been doing, stop. I've talked before about being crossed my whole life and I'm 41. Things have gotten a lot worse and I know people talk about getting something charged that will protect you, while uncrossing yourself. Thanks

mickeymsb --

In my experience, the easiest way to get a necklace that his been blessed, dressed, and empowered for any purpose is to first choose and purchase a necklace that YOU like and want to wear. It can be one with a talismanic pendant (such as an anti-evil-eye charm or a seal of Solomon) or just an ordinary one that you like the look of. There is no point in buying a prepared necklace that you will never wear because it doesn't suit your style.

Next, connect with a reputable rootworker from AIRR -- many of us will prepare and work with jewelry, praying over it, and sending it back to you with a small bottle of oil to keep it dressed.

The cost is not very great, but you need to arrange the connection in advance. Do NOT send a piece of jewelry to a rootworker without first agreeing on a price for the work and DO send it tracked and insured.

Good luck

A not-very-old, but very-old-style, printed, embossed, and gilded Hebrew paper talisman "for success" (as i was told). The lettering is in the form of a menorah or Jewish candelabrum, the red spots are growing pomegranates, and in the four corners are ripe pomegranates bursting open and showing their seeds. I presume it is based on Psalms 67 ... and i am hoping that Assa Geyari or Roi Geyari can translate it for me.😊 (P.S.: The menorah is Psalms 67, but there is extra wordage around it.)

Join her and the many other presenters and fellow festival goers at the 2023 Virtual Hoodoo Heritage Festival June 10th and 11th! Watch the promotional video:

Heidi Holton: Lucky Stones and Lucky Rocks
https://youtu.be/lBfqHr5DPjg

When the great blues singer Ma Rainey wrote and recorded "Lucky Rock Blues" in 1924, she was NOT singing about New Age Crystals! In hoodoo and conjure practice, the names Lucky Rock and Lucky Stone refer to the otoliths or earbones of fishes -- usually drumfish -- which were carried for good fortune by Native Americans and thence entered the materia magica of African American practitioners. Heidi sings the song, provides the ingredients, and guides you through making your Lucky Rock mojo according to instructions collected by the folklorist Harry Hyatt in the 1930s.

WHAT YOU GET:

Electronic Materials (via download):

Access code to the webcast
Two-page PDF of lecture notes

Conference Access (on the day of the Festival):
Webcast workshop
Live chat and social time
Q & A session with the presenter

Physical Materials (via postal mail):

Pair of Otoliths, a Dime, Lakshmi Dhoop, Grains of Paradise, a Leather cover, a Needle, and artificial sinew thread

Workshop boxes sell out early, so buy your tickets ASAP. If workshop boxes have sold out by the time you purchase your VHHF 2023 tickets, and you already have or can acquire the items listed under "Physical Materials," you will have everything that is included in the workshop box. When you purchase your ticket, you can log into the Festival site and see a complete list of all items, with the names of vendors and SKU numbers, for ease of ordering anything you need. You do not need these items to follow the teaching, but they are recommended, as their use will be demonstrated to viewers.

A shelf in Amulet Land at the Lucky Mojo Curio Co in Forestville, California -- and what a mixed array it is! Chinese calligraphic placards in auspicious red and gold, antique iron keys, carved wooden good fortune beads from China, Chinese bone double fish beads, portable stone crossroads for the altar from India in clear and golden quartz and black tourmaline (these are the very last in stock!), and Kalbeleya sashes from India, with anti-evil-eye mirrors (also the last of the last, and we will never see them again -- these are new-old stock from more than a decade ago, found in a sealed box in the barn!). If you are looking for folkloric and tribal amulets, we have the best stock around.
Drop by our shop any day of the week, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM -- or place your order online at luckymojo.com (we accept PayPal, Visa, Amex, and Mastercard) or by snail mail (we accept money orders and cash in envelopes).

Once you consecrate a piece of jewelry, would you do it again to recharge it or is one time good? Do certain stones or metal hold a charge longer so you don't have to do it again?

dragondog9 ,

It is common for individuals to dress the jewelry regularly such as a full moon, or a specific day of the week that is associated with the spell. I would do this once a month, though you can go longer. I tend to do it monthly if I am dressing with oil to redress it.

Hello all,

Please forgive my novice question, as I’ve been away from hoodoo for some time and haven’t yet tried this on my own.
I’ve recently purchased a new protective amulet and am wondering what is the best way to consecrate it as my own.

Thank you in advance,
miss r

missr,

I would cleanse the charm in a method that is safe to the amulet ie its material would help determine that. If it is a metal that is safe to be cleansed in water then use water, if it is not then don't use water and use another method. Assuming the charm is metal, wash it in holy water to cleanse it. Then take an oil related to the work, in this case protection, so you may use Protection oil or Fiery Wall of Protection oil, dress the item with the oil as you pray for it to protect you, then set it aside and light your incense such as Protection incense or Fiery Wall of Protection incense, wave the amulet though the smoke as you pray asking for protection. Then set the charm down and place a dish over it dress a white or red candle (for firey wall) and burn it on top of the amulet. Let the candle burn out and then wear it.

Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page is the first part of our complete set of the 1923 Wills's Cigarette Cards set called "Lucky Charms."" This inaugurates the completion of a series on these cards that i first started in 1994. I did not finish the series 30 years ago (So many scans! So much text! Such a slow dial-up connection!) -- but with the financial support of my patrons, we will now be making weekly updates with new, larger scans, full texts, and additional commentaries. The series will conclude when all 50 cards are online in beautiful colour with added information about these esoteric objects, plus links to other pages that i have written on these topics over the past three decades.

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page marks our embarcation into the long and complex work of scanning and transcribing all 50 of the 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt, commenting on their content, and uploading the finished pages to the Lucky W Amulet Archive for permanent display. The amount of behind-the scenes prep work that has gone into this seemingly simple project has been overwhelming, but we have our templates and work-flow in place now, and we hope for smoother (and more rapid) sailing in weeks to come. Today, Aries. Tomorrow ... The World!

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page marks our third foray into the long and complex work of scanning and transcribing all 50 of the 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt, commenting on their content, and uploading the finished pages to the Lucky W Amulet Archive for permanent display. The behind-the scenes prep work that goes into this seemingly simple project is both grueling and finicky, but we have our templates and work-flow in place now, and this week we were able to complete three web pages (a 50% increase over last week and a three-fold increase over our first week on the job). Gemini, Cancer, and Leo are now ready for our Patrons to enjoy!

Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page marks our fourth go-round in the rather complex task of scanning and transcribing all 50 of the 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt, commenting on their content, cross-linking them, and uploading the finished pages to the Lucky W Amulet Archive for permanent display. The behind-the scenes prep work supporting this seemingly cute project has become a bit overwhelming, as we decided to tear our earlier templates down and re-make the code, and we also bought a new, and supposedly better, scanner to replace our old one. After getting the new scanner up and running, we realized it was a TERRIBLE scanner. It could not distinguish denim blue from grey-blue or grey, and it perceived darker blue-green as black! Siva had already scanned several cards ahead and had cleaned up one card, front and back, when he showed me his first results -- and i was horrified! All that work -- and an entire new machine -- useless. The damned scanner was visually auto-tuning chromolithographic ink colours to a limited palette range of pre-sets. I hate it! I want to smash it with a hammer! Even a child should not be given a scanner this crappy to use as a pre-school toy! So Siva had to start scanning again, from scratch, while i forged on ahead of him with more text. But without the images, the text is nothing, of course, so we only have one card for our Patrons tonight, and getting it online was stressful and wearisome as Hell. Between that unexpected glitch-and-fix and our ongoing care for the shop cat, Boots, who is convalescing in the downstairs bathroom, we are running behind this week. We hope to get back on track next week. Virgo is now ready for our Patrons to enjoy!

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page marks our fifth dip into the intricate project of scanning and transcribing all 50 of the beautiful 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt, commenting on their content, cross-linking them, and uploading the finished pages to the Lucky W Amulet Archive for permanent display. The preparation that underlies this work is ongoing, but we have put last week's scanner woes behind us and are working at a nice clip now. I have transcribed, coded, and annotated all of the Zodiac talisman texts and Siva is busily cleaning up their scans while i forge ahead into the upcoming 38 texts that describe the gorgeously rendered chromolithographic illustrations that comprise the bulk of the card set of precious amulets from the British Museum.

I have a few questions about the sator square.

Can you do it in chalk under the welcome mat?

How often do you redo it for protection?

If it's smudged due to the mat moving or whatever, do you clean it all the way off to redo it, or just the parts that are smudged?

Do you clean it with purified water or Florida water?

Do you say anything while drawing it?
I am my lover’s and my lover is mine.

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page presents our sixth pass through the scanning, cleanup, and text transcriptions of all 50 of the resplendent 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt depicting a selected set of precious amulets from the British Museum. This week i have transcribed, coded, and annotated the final three Zodiac talisman texts and Siva has scanned and cleaned up the images. As we work on each card, we are also cross-linking these miniature chromolithographic masterpieces to other Lucky Mojo pages on astrological folk magic. The finished cigarette cards are available for Patreon members now -- and next year the entire set will open to the public for permanent display at the Lucky W Amulet Archive. Next week we will take a one-week break from this project and thereafter we will make three uploads of these cards and one surprise page per month until the Lucky Charms cards are finished.

MrsSchaeffer2020 ,

I moved your post from Hot Foot to the proper section on talismans such as the SATOR square.

You can write it with chalk, perhaps even a sachet powder mixed into chalk, or mud mixed with bath. crystals. It will smudge as it is under a floor mat. Redoing the work on a weekly basis would make sense. Praying a petition is traditional when doing work.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination.

Image

The 20th century was a time when lucky tokens, pocket pieces, and mascots were manufactured in vast quantities and given out to customers by companies of all kinds. Everyone believed in luck in those days, and these talismans, often called "Good Luck Coins," although they had no monetary value, were carefully saved by the folks who were got them. I have collected such exonumia for more than 50 years, and a couple of decades ago i put a few samples up for show at my Lucky Mojo site. This week i am sharing another batch of them, with commentary.

Find the updated page now at:
https://www.luckymojo.com/goodluckcoinsandtokens.html

The Lucky W Amulet Archive is a folkloric resource that contains hundreds of interlinked pages describing and illustrating amulets, talismans, lucky charms, and good luck pieces from all around the world and from all eras of history. It is a work in progress, and new pages are added on a regular basis at http://www.luckymojo.com/luckyw.html

To support me on Patreon, please go to "It's All Ephemera," where you can read my update posts and sign on as Patrons for as little as $8.00 per month:

Lucky W Amulet Archive: Lucky Charms on Wills's Cigarette Cards in 1923: Tier 3 AUGUST 7th, 2024

Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week my Patreon supporters receive a preview of our seventh pass through the scanning, cleanup, text transcriptions, and annotations of all 50 of the much loved 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt. These antique trading cards showcase a selected set of the rarest and most precious talismans in the collection of the British Museum. This week i have transcribed, coded, and annotated the first four of the 38 ancient amulet texts and Siva has scanned and cleaned up their glorious chromolithographic images. As we work on each card, we also cross-link these miniature masterpieces to other Lucky Mojo pages on world-wide folk magic. The finished cigarette cards are only available for Patreon members now -- but next year, thanks to their financial support, the entire set will open to the public for permanent display at the Lucky W Amulet Archive.

Re: How to Use Amulets, Charms, and Talismans Questions and Answers

Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

We have passed the half-way point! This week my Patreon supporters receive a preview of our eighth installment (out of fifteen total) of our scanning, cleanup, text transcriptions, and annotations of all 50 of the classic 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt. These full-colour trading cards present a selected set of the rarest and most valuable magical charms in the collection of the British Museum. This week i have transcribed, coded, and annotated the second four of the 38 ancient amulet texts and Siva has scanned and cleaned up their exquisite chromolithographic images. As we work on each card, i also write commentaries on these miniature masterpieces and cross-link them to other Lucky Mojo pages on world-wide folk magic. The finished cigarette cards are only available for Patreon members now -- but next year, thanks to their financial support, the entire set will open to the public for permanent display at the Lucky W Amulet Archive.

"The Lucky W Amulet Archive" spotlights popular and folkloric charms, amulets, and talismans from all around the world and all eras. The web site has been online since 1994, and new pages are underwritten by my Patrons. They get a preview and the public will see them in 2025. Listen to this show in our online archive, here:

Learn hoodoo: Biblical Talismans were expressly forbidden in the Jewish faith. However, Christians have been known to employ a variety of Biblically inspired talismans to ward off evil, and bring good fortune. Use in Magic:
Black Cat Hair is used in Black Cat gambler's supplies and also in Break Up spells.
