Hi Cat & Fellow Students,
Got a chuckle when on Californias' Channel 2 (CBS) news they did a
small piece on how California Real Estate Agents are burying St.
Joseph statues to sell real estate (they show an agent actually
digging and placing the statue upside down - too funny)!
Here is a link but I don't know the direct link, so go here:
http://cbs2.com/video
Then in the video search, type in "Real Estate". Its' the August 21,
2006 video clip of the news.
BTW Cat, is there a Saint for *buying* homes and cars? (I wish I owned
both!).
Thanks

Jess

Of course, and I'm a bit surprised cat didn't note this, they're not
[necessarily] practicing Hoodoo. This, and several other similar practices, such as placing St. Anthony upside down until he complies with a request, are common elements in Folk Catholicism, and not limited to the US, but found throughout Latin America and Europe.
Eoghan
(As i understand it, the placing of Saint Joseph upside down is Sicilian in origin and is the earliest version of this upside-down work, as Saint Joseph was the patron saint of Sicily. The inversion of other statues is of later conflationary development, as far as i can tell; for other entities in folk Catholicism have traditionally had their own unique forms of "withholding" or "physical" work: unscrewing the hands from statues of the Infant of Prague, removing the Baby Jesus from the arms of Saint Anthony statues, tying the string around the base of Santisima Muerte, etc.
(Saint Joseph is unusually important in USA hoodoo, especially when compared to the honour offered other saints, who have not become popular in USA conjure practices.
(A side-note: if hoodoo were as influenced by Haitian Voodoo as some deluded scholars would have us believe, why are there no USA hoodoo ceremonies or altars dedicated to Saint James, who plays an enormous role in Haitian folk Catholic / Voodoo iconography?
So, how do we explain the prominence of Saint Joseph in hoodoo? I believe the connection is through intercultural exchanges with Sicilian immigants. Colonies of Siicilian fishermen settled in many port cities in the USA, including New Orleans, San Francisco, and New York -- and, being darker-skinned than mainland Italians, and accustomed to commerce with North Africa, the Sicilians in these sea-coast areas had a high rate of intermarriage with African Americans. (My Sicilian father's cousin Virginia Percoco married a Black man in New York City during the 1930s, for instance, and Harry Hyatt recorded an interview with an intersex rootworker ("the Girl-Boy") in New Orleans who told Hyatt that his lover was "a Dago" -- undoubtedly a Sicilian, given the location).
Fava beans are called Saint Joseph Beans among Sicilians and Sicilian Americans because St. Joseph saved the island of Sicily from a famine when all other crops and the fish harvest had failed, by providing a bountiful supply of fava beans. In New Orleans the Sicilian-style Feast of Saint Joseph, where the Saint Joseph Beans are distributed as altar offerings, was opened up to participation by African Americans, and Fava Beans were thereafter called Mojo Beans in the African American community. So there is a stong link between Sicilian Saint Joseph rites of all kinds and hoodoo practice.
The practice of working with Saint Joseph by burying his statue (but not the us of Saint Joseph Beans) has spread into Ango-American communities of the USA as well, and became increasingly widespread after it was popularized during the 1970s. That era was so notable for the groth of Saint Joseph real estate work with statue burial that the urban legend site snopes.com at one point (and perhaps still) attempted to "bust the myth" that this was an old practice by claiming that it had been "invented by realtors during the 1970s"! This is one of the few cases of snopes.com being entirely wrong, by the way, for the site is usually quite accurate.
Snopes.com aside, and looking at the entance of Saint Joseph into hoodoo, i have a 1930s hoodoo supply company's catalogue ad for a Saint Joseph amulet case and statuette that is hinged in such a way that you can carry it on your person *with Saint Joseph upside down* -- which is clearly explained as the proper procedure in the ad. So it is old -- and it has been a part of hoodoo for decades longer than it has been a part of the White culture of America sampled by snopes.com.
Well, sorry to ramble, but in the absense of early material on the burial of Saint Anthony statues (which i would gladly receive, as i am not rying to be dogmatic here at all), i currently theorize that burying Saint Anthony upside down is a part of fairly recent spread of the Sicilian Saint Joseph upside-down rite to several other saints, each of whom originally had his or her own traditional "withholding" rites. As further evidence of the way these rites spread from one saint to another, i'd like to note that with the rise of the internet, the Saint Jude ex-voto rite of newspaper publication has recently been spreading onto Saint Expedite (but not onto Saints Joseph or Anthony).
(Just more food for thought. --cat)

Hello Cat,
I was wondering if I petitioned St. Joseph using his image on my
alter, would I turn his photo upside down while doing the work and
then turn it right side up and make an offering after my petition is
granted?
(Yes, you could do that. The pictures hung in a house to sell it, though, are hung right side up. --cat)
Also, when people bury a St. Joseph statue upside down (as
in the real estate news clip), do they dig the statue up and then re-bury it right side up after their petition has been granted?
(No, the statue is NOT "re-buried" -- it is redeemed and kept in a place of honour. You can go to my Lucky W Amulet Archive page on Saint Joseph and read the whole rite there:

--cat)
Working with the saints is new to me and any information given is much appreciated. Thank you. - Ron

I wrote a post about my success with the LM St. Joseph Spell kit with my condo in the spell kit section. Two days ago I closed. Yay! Anyway, I also bought a spell kit for my mom as she has a house on the market as well.
Her house however, has been sitting over a year with a price tag of over one million. Not too many of those selling these days! She was also running out of money trying to maintain this home as well as her own home and could not rent it out to cover the over $4000 per month mortgage. I kept telling her to do the St. Joseph kit but she kept putting it off and putting it off until finally last week she decided to use it. She followed the instructions to the "t" and 3 days later HER HOUSE SOLD! She had another property listed as a rental and this couple wanted to look at the rental as a house (in that price range fell through for them). They fell in love with my mom's house and bought it the next day. She closed last Thursday and is totally relieved. Like mine her St. Joseph statue now has a place of honor.
I am so pleased with the LM spell kits and how well they work. They are well researched, filled with all the necessary items which are of course made incredibly well. Happy, happy, HAPPY! Two successes from LM in my family. ITs great!
Thanks!!!

Since I am once again needing to look for work, I was looking through Lucky Mojo's Saint information and the information in this section of the forum, and I've decided to petition St. Jude, as well as picking Saint Joseph rather than Saint Expedite as it seems St. Joseph is more for employment (although I might still as for St Expedite's help as I need this to happen FAST).
However, I saw nothing on St. Joseph's page about what color candle, and what offerings to offer him as payment. St. Jude I already know as well as St. Expedite. I'd like to get these petition's out there as soon as possible. Thanks!

St. Josephs candle is Yellow
and offerings to give him is Fava beans (cooked), and also a white lily .
and here's a prayer
PRAYER TO SAINT JOSEPH FOR EMPLOYMENT AND JOB-GETTING
Dear Saint Joseph, as you were yourself
once faced with the responsibility
of providing the necessities of life for Jesus and Mary,
look down with fatherly compassion upon me
in my present need to support my family.
Please help me to find gainful employment very soon,
so that this heavy burden of concern
will be lifted from my heart
and I will soon be able to provide
for those whom God has entrusted to my care.
Blessed St. Joseph, patron of all working people,
obtain for me the grace to labor.
Help me to be conscientious in my work
so that I may give as full a measure as I have received.
May I labor in a spirit of thankfulness and joy,
ever mindful of all the gifts I have received from God
that enable me to perform these tasks.
Permit me to work in peace, patience, and moderation,
keeping in mind the account I must one day give
of time lost and talents unused, so fatal to the work of God.
Glorious St. Joseph, may my labors be
all for Jesus,
all through Mary,
and all after your holy example in life and in death.
Amen

And I agree with lunaislight, the magical power of the saints, is a GREAT book to have on hand that lucky mojo sells. Saint Joseph (San Jose in Spanish and San Giuseppe in Italian) is petitioned by many conservative Catholics as one who grants an easy death, but in the wider world of Catholic folk-magic, he is the Patron Saint of real estate matters and home sales, and as Saint Joseph the Worker, he helps people find employment. The reason given for these beliefs is that he was a carpenter who taught his step-son Jesus the carpentering trade, and he always saw to it that Jesus was well housed

Thank you St. Joseph for coming to the aid of my friend and bringing a good buyer to the historical building they were trying to sell for so very long! You've done a great financial service to a family in a difficult situation, and in spite of the economic times that had complicated things for so long. Thank you! And thank you for allowing me to play a role in bringing you into the center of their spiritual lives through this situation!

Thank you Cat. St. Joseph is indeed my very dearest Saint to work with. His feast day is March 19th and I am beginning preparations for a traditional feast day celebration. For those who don't know how, its very easy to set up an altar to manifest blessings for the entire year! Writing a sincere petition paper with your request, dressing it with St. Joseph Oil, House Blessing, Money Attraction all work for me. You should set up a dressed candle, his image or statue and some fresh bread. Palm leaves are appropriate along with Fava beans. I follow Sicilian customs for the food, so it can get as elaborate as you wish. There's ton more, so I'll watch for questions.

Thank you St. Joseph. I set up an area on my alter for St. Joseph. I asked him for his help concerning a big promotion at work. Well, everything along the way was positioned in such a way that all the doors were opened for me. Just yesterday someone from human resouces called me to let me know that I got the promotion. The strange thing about it, is no one called my immediate supervisor to tell him about it.
Thank you St. Expedite. Thank you so much for granting my request and how fast it came through. I worked with St. Joseph and St. Expedite together to get that promotion. Thank you for opening the doors. Thank you! Thank you! and Thank you!!!!!

Hello everyone! I have a quick question regarding a situation regarding my Sister and Brother In Law with St. Joseph. I received a message from them saying while they were digging in the front yard they came across a buried statue of St.Joseph in the front yard which they did not put there. I know that if one buries St. Joseph to sell their house they are supposed to dig him back up. My sister and brother in law bought this house a few months ago from the previous owners, which I am assuming, St. Joseph belonged to the previous owners. Since they have found this staute should they do anything with it. Unbury and keep it or try to contact the previous owners and give it back to them? Thank you in advance!

Last week I had a job interview. Before I went on the interview I lit the candle, put the picture of the St. Joseph under the candle as well as the name of the company. So I prayed like crazy. When I went to the interview i took the picture of St. Joseph ( the one that was under the candle), put it in my bra and I went for an interview. Then I repeated the same process after the interview for 2 more days. So yes, I got the job, and I am so happy.
St. Joseph thank you so much for granting my wish, You knew what I needed. Thank you, thank you.

So I have this question & hope I can make myself understood (my mother tongue is spanish so I apologize in advance if something is wrong)... I want to sell not a house but some land & they'll be like 50 or 60 pieces of land. I have read that you must bury the statue of St Joseph, so... does that mean that I'll have to buy one spellkit for every piece?? :S

I don't think I'll have enough money...

Saint Joseph is about real estate which includes land too. Well, you can buy the car statue from lucky mojo rather than buying more than one spell kit.
You can find them here under car statues
http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatstatuar ... atcarstats
Lastly, I would use one spell kit asking that you sell all your pieces of land, an bury a car statue at each place. If you still can't afford that then, perhaps you can bury a prayer card instead.

What was your purpose for petitioning Saint Joseph? He is the partron Saint for carpenters, selling houses and workers. Actually he is very good in several areas related to the home. You could make a donation in his time to an organization specifically for the results you received. For example, work related, consider organizations that empower workers, and of course we have a disuccussion area in the forum that pays honor to him as well. Also, I recommend that you read Working With Saint Joseph posts (

Saint Joseph does several things. And from the info page you will learn and from the several threads that he is GREAT for getting job work.
You can do any of the things that ConjureMan Ali listed. Furthermore, if there is church around your area you can leave him donations there as well. He likes lillies...especially white. You can spread his name as well, or even by him a prayer card or statue (a car statue which is small is inexpensive). You may want to do this as well.

If you get a candle specifically for Saint Joseph the prayer is usually on the candle and his day is Sunday. When you petition him for help tell him that if he does this for you, you'll pay him with either Fava Beans or even something like a prayer card. If I find an overall prayer I'll post it here.

NOVENA TO SAIN JOSEPH
*(prayer to be said at the end of each day's devotion)
Saint Joseph, I, your unworthy child, greet you. You are the faithful protector and intercessor of all who love and venerate you. You know that I have special confidence in you and that, after Jesus and Mary, I place all my hope of salvation in you, for you are especially powerful with God and will never abandon your faithful servants. Therefore I humbly invoke you and commend myself, with all who are dear to me and all that belong to me, to your intercession. I beg of you, by your love for Jesus and Mary, not to abandon me during life and to assist me at the hour of my death.
Glorious Saint Joseph, spouse of the Immaculate Virgin, obtain for me a pure, humble, charitable mind, and perfect resignation to the divine Will. Be my guide, my father, and my model through life that I may merit to die as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary.
Loving Saint Joseph, faithful follower of Jesus Christ, I raise my heart to you to implore your powerful intercession in obtaining from the Divine Heart of Jesus all the graces necessary for my spiritual and temporal welfare, particularly the grace of a happy death, and the special grace I now implore:
(Mention your request).
Guardian of the Word Incarnate, I feel confident that your prayers in my behalf will be graciously heard before the throne of God. Amen.
