Hello, everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

Image

Once again in cataloguing articles for the Lucky W Amulet Archive, i have strayed from the intent conveyed by the name "Lucky W" -- and this week i am presenting one of the best known venerational images of the Roman Catholic faith, Maria Dolorosa del Monte Calvario. Here, for my Patrons, is an article i wrote in 2006, but never published on my web site, now fully illustrated, that tells the story of this beautiful depiction of Mary and how it entered the folk religions of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Lucky W Amulet Archive is a free online book about good luck artifacts: The web's largest illustrated descriptive archive of folkloric amulets, talismans, charms, religious icons, and magical stuff from many cultures and every era. Check out what's new at:

Thanks to the support of my Patrons, there is a new public web page online at SouthernSpirits.org that describes conjure, root doctoring, and witchcraft among enslaved and emancipated people of African descent in Georgia. This week in "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," we venture North to Pennsylvania to learn about Alta C. Meskell, an "Indian Herbalist" and self-declared "physician" born in 1875 who got busted by the Food and Drug Administration for selling herbal medicines -- and lucky for us, the FDA analyzed and recorded the ingredients of each and every one of her formulas!

This week in "It's All Ephemera" i looked over the table of contents to my free online book about African American folk magic, "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice," and found another unwritten chapter -- "Photographs in Hoodoo" -- and so here it is, as part of the series i call "A Hoodoo Hand."! In this episode, the whys and wherefores of spell-work with photographs are explored, and a couple of great old conjure workings from the mid twentieth century provide examples of how it is done. This being an ephemera-centric page, the illustrations are all vintage. If you are not a Patron, you will just have to wait, because ...

I am impressed by the level of your research, Miss Cat! You're a wonderful historical teacher!

I've wrote down notes from your article https://yourwateandfate.com/Palmistry_and_Palm_Readers.

First, it's amazing to see someone detailing the history of Romani people. Romani are a significant minority in my country. The Romanian derogatory term for them is "tigani".

Romani suffered immense marginalization during the Middle Ages in Wallachia and Moldova. They were essentially slaves in the Orthodox Monasteries or around manors. I have one particular Romanian idiom in mind that captures their deplorable conditions. In the mid 19th century, Romanian intellectuals schooled in France came back and demanded Romani's release from slavery and humiliation. By 1848, Europe witnessed revolts in many countries. Moldova and Wallachia were no exception. Finally, in 1855/1856, Romani people were granted freedom.

In popular culture they are known as great singers using accordions in particular. One popular saying is that Romani people "learn by the ear" how to sing and play instruments due to the obvious lack of higher education. Romani women and sometimes men learnt from generation to generation magic spells and chants. They are predominantly Christian. Romani women also travel from village to village selling clothing, quilts or brooms.

My aunt stumbled in her youth upon a Romani woman who read her palms. The fortune teller, according to my aunt, had predicted circumstances that came to pass such as the number of her children and their gender. She also forewarned about the age when my aunt will pass away.

It's a topic that can in certain horrifying circumstances be paralleled with the situation of Black people in the United States.

Thanks for your kind opinion of me, Balkan Diviner. And i agree, the treatment of the Romani people in Eastern Europe has been terrible at times. Things have improved, but discrimination still persists.

This week in "It's All Ephemera" i took another look at the table of contents to "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice," my massive and free online book about African American folk magic -- and, to no one's great surprise, i found another unwritten chapter -- "Dolls and Effigies in Hoodoo" -- and so here it is, as part of the Patreon series i call "A Hoodoo Hand." In this episode, i present an illustrated overview of how to prepare dolls for use in conjure spells of love, healing, cursing, and more. Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $2.00 per week for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. This week in "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," we have an interview with a man of mixed Black, Choctaw, and French ancestry who was known as the "Indian Herb Doctor" of Marion, Illinois. In 1941 he was interviewed by a local writer named Beulah M. DeVard for a never-published book, "The Negro in Illinois." For more than 80 years, her faded manuscript pages lay crumbling in a library archive. Now, thanks to digitization and the support of my Patrons, we have transcribed this forgotten piece of herbal history for the benefit of all.

Hello, everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

Image

As winter draws in around us, my thoughts turn to hot tea, cookies, and the cozy tea rooms of yesteryear. Today i return with pleasure to Vintage Tea Rooms by Location -- namely the great state of Maine, USA -- with a gallery of very old postcards, each one accompanied by a descriptive caption. These images will eventually be on display at the Mystic Tea Room web site for every tea lover and tea leaf reader to enjoy, but my Patrons, who pay as little as $2.00 per week to support my work, will have access to them one full year before the public does.

"Old Maine Tea Rooms" is online now for my Patrons, in gratitude for your support. The public will not view it until December 14th, 2024, at which point it will be open to all, as a souvenir of times gone by.

[THE SECRET URL IS SENT TO PATRONS VIA EMAIL]

The Mystic Tea Room web site is dedicated to the traditional art of fortune telling by tea leaves, also known as tea leaf reading, cup reading, cup tossing, divination by tea leaves, tasseomancy, and tasseography. If you are not yet familiar with the public portion of the site, check it out!

Hello, everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

Image

In keeping with the Winter theme of warm tea and tea-leaf reading, this week's offering is a genuine rarity, the Snowhite Regency Fortune Cup containing 52 playing cards and made by the Johnson Brothers Pottery of England for an extremely elusive couple named Verna A. and John W. Meredith, who copyrighted the cup in the U.S.A. and promptly disappeared. Cartomancy tea cups are not common, but this cup is so hard to find that in all my years of collecting, i have only seen it put up for sale twice, once in 2011 without a saucer, and once in 2017 as a complete cup and saucer set.

The Johnson Brothers pottery was among the world's largest manufacturers of tableware, but they never made another divination cup during the entire run of the company, from 1882 to 2015. My brand-new "Johnson Brothers" pottery company category-page and the heavily illustrated page on "The Fortune Cup" itself are online now for my Patrons, in gratitude for their financial support. The public will not view these two pages until December 21st, 2024, at which point they will be open to all. Join my Patreon team now and be the first to know all about the crazy history of fortune telling.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $2.00 per week for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. Scotland is famous for its many battles and historical markers, and there seems to be a tea room nearby to each and every one of them.

Hello, everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

Image

In June of 2023, thanks to the support of my Patrons, The Mystic Tea Room opened a "Bibliography of Books about Tasseomancy" to the public. That page joined an earlier MTR page on "Tea Company Booklets," which included pamphlets filled with information from tea growers about tea drinking and the tea industry, as well as a few that described tea cup reading. This week i present my Patrons with a one-year first glimpse at another aspect of the booklet proposition, namely instructional "Pottery Company Booklets" issued by the china ware companies that manufactured tasseomantic cups. From Alfred Meakin and Aynsley to Wimsatt and Zarka, here are the collectible, colourful, and almost-impossible-to-find pamphlets that once accompanied the lovely astrological, cartomantic, numerological, and symbolic fortune telling cups of yore.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $2.00 per week for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. After a year, these pages are given to the public to read for free. This week's Patreon sneak-peek page is "New Year Fortunes on Good Luck Dice Postcards." Learn how dice are used to read fortunes at the New Year -- and how in times gone by these mini-readings became little artistic masterpieces that conveyed secret messages through the mail.

This week the latest free page is "Domino and Dice Postcards by Fred C. Lounsbury," a companion to the previously released Lounsbury "Cartomancy" set.

This week in "It's All Ephemera" i have written a brand-new chapter of "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice," my free online book about African American folk magic. This new web page -- "Marked Money" -- is part of the Patreon series i call "A Hoodoo Hand" and presents an illustrated overview on how to select, mark, dress, and deploy currency and coins for use in spells to bring you luck and wealth, either through commerce or games of chance. However, if you are not a Patron, you will just have to wait at the grade crossing until the Fast Mail rolls back through again next year, because ...

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page is the first part of a set of comical numerological fortune telling cards published and machine-vended by the Mutoscope Company of Chicago, Illinois in the 1940s. Mutoscope, which began as a maker of coin-operated peep-show films, also provided pin-up and celebrity postcards which were marketed primarily in men's spaces, such as bars, pool halls, tobacconists, and liquor stores. Each Lucky Number card contains 6 digits for lottery play, a slightly risqué or misogynistic joke, and a burlesque cartoon. They sure don't make them like this any more!

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page concludes our 32-card set of comical numerology cards with lucky numbers for betting, published and machine-vended by the Mutoscope Company of Chicago, Illinois in the 1940s. Several artists are represented, including girlie cartoonist "Curlander" and silhouette caricaturist "W." Vended primarily in men's spaces, such as bars, pool halls, tobacconists, and liquor stores, these Lucky Mutoscope Number cards each contain 6 digits for illegal lottery play, a risqué or misogynistic joke, and a burlesque cartoon. Not woke! Strictly old-school!

When one thinks of tea rooms in Virginia, the idea of British Colonial high tea no doubt comes to mind -- and indeed, we do tour a tea room planted on the site of George Washington's birthplace -- but Virginia is more diverse than you might imagine, with a Japanese tea room, a cozy Blue Jay auto court tea room, a tea room hidden in a garden, a dramatically coloured service station tea room, and, of course, for no reason at all, a tea room named after the Ella Cinders comic strip, with her picture on the signage! Come along and join the fun -- and learn a little bit about how tea rooms fit in with the National Park Service, silent movies, and Esso Standard Products.

After one year as a Patreon exclusive, "Old Virginia Tea Rooms" has been unlocked and is available to the public.

Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page is the first part of our extended survey of Dragon Money, compiled in honour of the coming Lunar Festival on February 10th, 2024, which inaugurates the auspicious Year of the Dragon. Dozens of nations around the world have taken this opportunity to issue lucky siver, gold, and copper coins and bullion displaying images of talismanic dragons in celebration of an event that only happens every 12 years. We are collecting as many dragon coins as we can for your viewing pleasure. Our Patrons usually get a one-year exclusive preview of our work documenting the material culture of magic and luck, but this time they are getting only a one-WEEK exclusive, because next week, on February 7th, 2024, when Part Two is finished, the whole world will be invited to share in the lure and lore of precious metal dragon money!

After a year, these pages are given to the public to read for free. This week "Your Wate and Fate" returns once again to the lost world of the psychic readers, numerologists, clairvoyants, astrologers, spirit mediums, tea leaf readers, and cartomancers of the 19th and 20th centuries, revealing their existence through the business cards, flyers, and newspaper advertisements that preceded today's digital social media. A collection of this nature is unusual, to say the least, and we appreciate the support that Your Wate and Fate is gaining from today's psychics, who wish to learn about our spiritual ancestors.

Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week's Patreon-supported page is a whole new category of luckiness at Your Wate and Fate -- a guide to basic numismatology for folks who follow our regular uploads on lucky coins, tokens, and Dragon Money. If you don't know what exonumia is, if you are in the dark about CoAs and challenge coins, and if you don't know your obverse from your reverse -- this page is for you! It's your one-page guide to the amazing material culture of lucky silver, gold, and copper coins and bullion, wooden nickels, and round tuits. If it's worth money it's here, and if it is lucky, it's here. We cover everything from the difference between antiquing and tarnish to the difference between face value and spot price. Our Patrons usually get a one-year exclusive preview of our work documenting the material culture of magic and luck, but because we have a bunch of lucky coin pages coming up for release to the public, we rushed this explanatory page ahead, putting the horse before the cart, so to speak.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $2.00 per week for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. This week in "It's All Ephemera" we catch up on "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice in Progress," with a complicated annotation to what seems on the surface to be a very simple mojo hand. In this 1938 interview with Informant #863, The Unkus Man, the folklorist Harry M. Hyatt wanders into the weeds and runs afoul of language and concepts for which he was not quite prepared. A little bit of background knowledge makes it all clear, and the true story of "Dr. Delong" and the "leather pell tellman caseman" is revealed. If you like your hoodoo with a sprinkling of kabbalah on the side, you'll love this one!

This week in "It's All Ephemera" we catch up on "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice in Progress," with a series of spells involving truth-telling and tattletales. They all center around the power of the American Mockingbird as the means to accomplish one's goals, with a side-trip into similar spells employing the power of Parrots, Catbirds, Cockatoos, Budgies, and Brown Thrashers.

This illustrated web page describes rural root doctoring of the early 20th century using bird tongues, feathers, and eggs to either silence people or make them spill the truth in court, in love, in family matters, or in social situations.

This week in "It's All Ephemera" we take "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice in Progress" into orbit with a series of tables that connect the Seven Sacred Planets with the down-to-earth flowers, herbs, seeds, and roots that share their energy. When you learn to employ herbs of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn on their special days of the week, they will lift your rootwork into the stratosphere.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $2.00 per week for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. This week in "It's All Ephemera" the pile of electrons known as "A Hoodoo Hand" is shuffled and dealt -- and the winner is once more "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice in Progress," as i present "Needles, Pins, and Nails," another unwritten chapter of my free online book about African American folk magic. In this episode, the domestic side of conjure is revealed, with a long exegesis on why pins and needles are not the same and how that affects their uses in spell-work. This being an ephemera-centric page, the illustrations are many, varied, and, above all vintage.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $2.00 per week for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

Image

"The Dream Book Bibliography, Part One at YIPPIE," is the first episode in what we can all only assume will be my stab at a creating a lushly illustrated Dream Book cover gallery and annotated bibliography series, hosted at The Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology. The books come from my collection, the scanning and cleanup of the art have been a joint project spearheaded with my husband nagasiva, and the write-ups of the books are my own take on what makes each title different from another. This is a one-year Patreon exclusive for those who financially support my writing and research. I greatly appreciate the support, because no one is paying much for popular culture academia projects these days except you, my dear friends, fans, and fellow-travellers. When AI takes over the world and history becomes fiction, you can stand proud and tell your grandchildren, "I sent cat and nagasiva $8.00 per month to scan and catalogue dream books." And your grandkids will reply, "What's a dream book, Grandy?" And you will reply, "Well, Kiddo, i'm not really sure anymore. It was something people made 'way, way back, before before.'"

[PATRONS GET THE SECRET URL IN EMAIL ONE YEAR BEFORE IT OPENS TO THE PUBLIC]

This time the spotlighted authors run the gamut from showmen to scientists -- just random folks whose rare and valuable books on hypnosis have landed in my untidy office. As always, my reviews are illustrated and annotated. Consider this a would-be want-list for the aspiring hypnotist within you, and take a tour through my personal hypnotism library, gathered over the course of 60 years.

The YIPPIE web site includes bibliographies on an array of occult and spiritual topics and is currently open to the public, for the aid of scholars, researchers, and students at http://yronwode.org

After a year, these pages are given to the public to read for free. This week "Your Wate and Fate" goes to the movies to take a first look at the 20th century's slightly weird obsession with Crystal Balls in Film! From comedies and musicals to action dramas, crime thrillers, and heart-warming family features, crystal balls of all sizes -- but only one shape -- were everywhere in Hollywood from the silent 1910s to the Great Odometer Roll-Over. This collection of annotated images is just the tip of the crystal, and there will be lots more to come as we scan, clean, upload, and identify the turbaned fortune tellers and bejewelled prophetesses who made the movies great.

This week my Patrons have a treat awaiting them in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" with a one-year Patreon exclusive introducing an illustrated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics in which the topic is African-American folk magic. It's 1924 -- 100 years ago -- and Gertrude "Ma" Rainey was singing about her trip to New Orleans to find "that lucky rock," the magical ear bone of a Drumfish. As usual, an MP3 audio file is included so that you can sing along as you study the amazing links between hoodoo and the blues.

After a year for my Patrons to enjoy, this material will be linked from the public-facing pages of the Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo site. In the meantime, my Patrons also have access to exclusive threads at the Lucky Mojo Forum and participate in discussions with me about my ongoing publications.

This week "Your Wate and Fate" takes in a fast-paced second feature as we continue our look at the 20th century's eccentric portrayal of Crystal Balls in Film! This time the focus is on Niko Tinbergen and the Supernormal Stimuli -- crystal balls so large that entire people can be seen within. Yes, from "The Mask of Fu Manchu" and "The Return of Chandu" to "The Wizard of Oz," it's time to break out the Big Balls! This collection of annotated images in which fortune telling meets iconic pop culture, is not the last of our visions, for there are still more cinematic crystals to scan, clean, upload, and identify, and we have not yet reached the end of the turbaned racketeers and veiled prophetesses who made the movies marvelous.

This week my Patrons are served a deep dish of history in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo," with a one-year Patreon exclusive that features an illustrated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics in which the topic is African-American folk magic. It's 1931 and Blind Willie McTell -- or rather, William Samuel McTier in his guise as "Georgia Bill" -- was wanderin' 'round Georgia, waiting for those fried pies to get done, searching for his woman's mojo, and trying to avoid them jinx. It was a "Scarey Day" for him, for sure. As usual, an MP3 audio file is included so that you can sing along as you study the deep-felt links between hoodoo and the blues.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

Image

This week "The Dream Book Bibliography, Part Two at YIPPIE," takes a long dive down a very specific rabbit-hole, one that will be particularly welcoming to art-spotters and old film buffs. Join me in a throw-back to my fannish days as i unravel the clue-filled linguistic, visual, photographic, and timeline connections between Jean Sothern in "The Mysteries of Myra" (1916), Theda Bara in "The Tiger Woman" (1917), Theda Bara in "Salomé" (1918), Betty Blythe in "Queen of Sheba (1921), and, going the long way around, on to the unnamed artist who painted the cover for "Myra Moore's Dream Book," published in 1921, in Scotland, of all places.

This is a one-year Patreon exclusive for those who financially support my writing and research. I greatly appreciate the support, because no one is paying much for popular culture academia projects these days except you, my dear friends, fans, and fellow-travellers. When AI takes over the world and history becomes fiction, you can stand proud and tell your grandchildren, "I sent cat and nagasiva $8.00 per month to scan and catalogue dream books." This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are getting a one-year Patreon exclusive illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American folk magic. Going back to the 1970s, we get to hear K.C. Douglas singing about one of the most mysterious of hoodoo curios, the fabled Black Cat Bone, and learn all about its use in his native Mississippi, as well as his adopted state of California. This time two different MP3 audio files are included, one acoustic and one electric, so that you can sing along as you study the enduring links between hoodoo and the blues.

This week in "It's All Ephemera" we give "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice in Progress" a thorough cleaning with washcloth and dishrag spells. Enhance the range of your root doctoring using old-time techniques for job-getting, love-holding, nature-tying, dreaming of your future mate, curing bad luck, protecting yourself from magic, driving enemies away, and cursing -- with nothing more than a washcloth or a dishrag as a personal concern. This great collection of spells dates from 1892 to 1970 and it will surely open your eyes to domestic conjure ... but only if you are one of my Patreon supporters, because ...

The Crystal Ball Film Festival is back! -- as "Your Wate and Fate" presents Part Five of Hollywood's strange obsession with Crystallomancy in Cinema! We thought we had reached the end last week, but that prediction proved premature, as dozens more rare posters, lobby cards, and publicity stills came tumbling out of the vaults to enlighten, surprise, offend, and scare the whiskers off of today's internet occultists. You'll believe it when you see it, and now you WILL see it, as we bring you Hollywood's most exciting array of movie metaphysicians, staring into the darling bane of prop masters everywhere, the lucent Crystal Ball.

This week in "It's All Ephemera" we continue the "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice in Progress" collection of dishrag spells and also include hat bow tricks that can be cured with dirty dishrags. There is a lot more to rootwork than the simple candle magic you will find all over the internet, and each new portion of "Washcloths and Dishrags in Hoodoo and Conjure" reveals time-tested techniques for job-getting, love-holding, nature-tying, dreaming of your future mate, curing bad luck, protecting yourself from magic, driving enemies away, and cursing -- with nothing more than a washcloth or a dishrag as a personal concern.

These powerful spells were collected from Black practitioners in the South and date from 1892 to 1970. Reading them will open your eyes to the power of domestic conjure ... but only if you are one of my Patreon supporters, because ...

The Mystic Tea Room: MORE MAGICAL TEA ROOM MATCHBOOKS (Tier 3 MAY 7th, 2024)

Image

Hello, everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week in "From the Land of Tea," we make a second pass through the almost forgotten world of department store and restaurant tea rooms, including tea rooms that doubled as psychic reading parlours.

Most psychic readers who set up in tea rooms had their own business card, but the tea room proprietors themselves tended to use a standard restaurant advertising medium, the matchbook cover.

At one time matchbooks were given out for free by almost every business in America, but when smoking was outlawed in restaurants, these ubiquitous pieces of commercial art became less common. They are still with us, but most folks now carry petroleum-fueled lighters.

Vintage matchbook covers tell us the amazing history of tea rooms and tea room themes, including tea room divination. This new web page, "Vintage Tea Room Matchbook Covers No. 2," prepared for the exclusive enjoyment of my Patrons for one year, takes us down the matchbook rabbit hole once again, to a little pocket-dimension of graphic delight.

[THE SECRET URL IS SENT TO PATRONS VIA EMAIL]

Journey with us once again to Matchbook Land, the world of sho-card letters, graphic artists, and diligent typesetters, who helped make tea rooms and tea room fortune-telling the wonderful pleasure it was ... and may yet still be.

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page is something new -- not a hoax, not a dream, not an imaginary story, but a collection of memories and sketches unearthed from the electron caves of Forestville. People have asked me to write about my life, and i have always shrugged the idea off, but in actuality i have been taking notes for a long, long while -- i just haven't published them, until now. This is one for my Patreons only, and may never reach the public. I dedicate it to Ignacio Ceja, a long time supporter of my writing.

This week in "It's All Ephemera" i continue filling in the blank pages of my free online book, "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice," with another installment of "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice in Progress." This time i cover the topic of those now-ubiquitous (and sometimes reviled) conjure spell kits which contain everything you need to perform a spell, plus instructions. Are they Authentic? Useful? A good bargain? Intended for newbies only? These and other questions are asked -- and answered -- in an extended look at the history and development of magical spell kits for love-drawing, job-getting, prosperity, protection, influence, and cursing. Reading about this popular aspect of urban hoodoo will open your eyes to the evolution of domestic conjure ... but only if you are one of my Patreon supporters, because ...

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are getting a one-year Patreon exclusive illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American folk magic. Blind Lemon Jefferson, who was born in Texas and recorded in Chicago for Paramount Records, gives us a lesson in how someone can turn a trick -- and to his surprise, the trick is turned on him, in "Broke and Hungry," a classic country blues about what happens when you meet your magical match, and lose.

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are getting a one-year Patreon exclusive illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American folk magic. Johnny Shines, who was born in Frayser, Tennessee, in 1915, travelled and performed with Robert Johnson from 1935-1938, and in 1969 he recorded a previously unknown song composed, but never recorded, by Johnson, called "Going to Algiers." Written in 1935, recorded in 1969, and only released to the public in 1995, this song about a mojo hand and the fabled Seven Sisters of Hoodoo Town came so close to being lost forever that it will make your head spin. No transcription of it exists on the internet as of this writing, but i have done my best to set forth the lyrics for my patrons, who have a one year exclusive on this new web page, in gratitude for their financial support for my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and fortune telling.

Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page is the first part of our complete set of the 1923 Wills's Cigarette Cards set called "Lucky Charms."" This inaugurates the completion of a series on these cards that i first started in 1994. I did not finish the series 30 years ago (So many scans! So much text! Such a slow dial-up connection!) -- but with the financial support of my patrons, we will now be making weekly updates with new, larger scans, full texts, and additional commentaries. The series will conclude when all 50 cards are online in beautiful colour with added information about these esoteric objects, plus links to other pages that i have written on these topics over the past three decades.
