This week in "A Hoodoo Hand" my Patrons get the good news that their names will appear on the end credits of every Lucky Mojo Network video at YouTube -- and the public will be invited to check out the amazing project we have embarked upon as we edit and upload 1,660 radio shows to YouTube with beautifully enhanced video features. Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. After a year for my Patrons to enjoy, these pages are made public for all to read. This week's release concludes our 32-card set of comical numerology cards with lucky numbers for betting, published and machine-vended by the Mutoscope Company of Chicago, Illinois in the 1940s. Several artists are represented, including girlie cartoonist "Curlander" and silhouette caricaturist "W." Vended primarily in men's spaces, such as bars, pool halls, tobacconists, and liquor stores, these Lucky Mutoscope Number cards each contain 6 digits for illegal lottery play, a risqué or misogynistic joke, and a burlesque cartoon. Not woke! Strictly old-school!

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are getting an illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American rootwork. Today i offer you a treat from 1937, with Fulton Allen, better known as Blind Boy Fuller, singing and playing his delicate Piedmont style guitar licks on a number called "Stingy Mama," -- and it seems that Fuller is yet another man in search of his wife's hidden mojo hand. Thanks to the help of my husband nagasiva, this article is accompanied by two portrait photos, a label shot, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. I have also written a short biography of Fuller, for those who enjoy musical history as much as the education in hoodoo. This project is being previewed by my patrons, who have a one year exclusive on every week's new web page, in gratitude for their financial support of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and fortune telling.

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are getting an illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American rootwork. Today our conjure documentation comes from 1932, with the husband and wife team of Coot Grant and Kid Sox Wesley Wilson singing about the power of a mojo hand, and how the inadvertent touch of a lover can cut off its luck. I have written short biographies of the couple, for those who enjoy musical history alongside their education in hoodoo, and thanks to the help of my husband nagasiva, the bio is accompanied by a portrait photo, two label shots, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. This project is being previewed by my patrons, who have a one year exclusive on every week's new web page, in gratitude for their financial support of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and fortune telling.

Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page consists of a third collection of memories and sketches spanning many years of my life. I never planned to write about myself, but when people ask me questions, i reply, and i save the messages, and the electrons have just piled up on my hard drive over the years. This material has not been formally published as a collection until now. At the present it is intended to be seen by my Patrons only, and it may never reach the public. I dedicate it to Fred Burke and Ignacio Ceja, two long time supporters of my writing.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

In this installment of "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," we gain wisdom from a collection of hoodoo beliefs and practices published in 1894. The material comes from the memory of Ruby Andrews Moore, the racist granddaughter of a white enslaver -- and despite the author's ugly attitude, it provides us with a clear view of the conjure beliefs of Black Americans in the Georgia Sea Islands before the Civil War. As always, i take care to unpack the antiquated terminology, correct any errors, and offer insights into the life and times of the author.

[PATRONS GET THE SECRET URL IN EMAIL ONE YEAR BEFORE IT OPENS TO THE PUBLIC]

This illustrated and annotated web page describes rural African-American omens, divination, and spell-work in the 19th century. Copies of the original article accompany the text.

The Southern Spirits web site includes material about hoodoo gathered from old books, magazine articles, newspapers, and fragments extracted from novels and short stories, annotated with interpretive and comparative notes. If you are not yet familiar with the public portion of the site, check it out!

Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

"The Dowsing Bibliography at YIPPIE" was first put online in 2010, then thoroughly updated in 2020. Now, after five years of dormancy, it has sprung back to life with a dozen new entries and almost two dozen new graphics, plus much additional information about the books already listed. As a Life Member of the American Society of Dowsers, it is my pleasure to keep my friends and colleagues up-to-date on the literature of dowsing with personal reviews and glam cover shots of everything from my own collection of ultra-rare 19th and 20th century dowsing books to the cutest new dowsing-for-interior-decorators self-published wonder. This is the first time my Patrons have supported the Dowsing series hosted at the Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology, and for their financial assistance, they each receive a one-year Patreon exclusive link to the New! Improved! More Colourful! Dowsing Bibliography -- which will open to the public in 2026.

[PATRONS GET THE SECRET URL IN EMAIL ONE YEAR BEFORE IT OPENS TO THE PUBLIC]

Don't worry, though, all you non-Patron Dowsers -- the 2020 edition of the Dowsing Bibliography is still online at the YIPPIE web site, along with all our other public bibliographies on occult and spiritual topics, at http://yronwode.org

"It's All Ephemera" is the over-arching name for my Patreon stream, and within that is the Patreon series i call "A Hoodoo Hand," which consists of new chapters of "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice," my massive and free online book about African American folk magic. After a year for my Patrons to enjoy, these chapters are made public for all to read. On this newly-released web page -- "Compelling the Truth to Be Told" -- we catch up on "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice in Progress," with a series of spells involving truth-telling and tattletales. They all center around the power of the American Mockingbird as the means to accomplish one's goals, with a side-trip into similar spells employing the power of Parrots, Catbirds, Cockatoos, Budgies, and Brown Thrashers.

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are getting an illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American rootwork. Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. This week we release "The Dream Book Bibliography, Part One at YIPPIE."

Image

This is the first episode in what we can all only assume will be my stab at a creating a lushly illustrated Dream Book cover gallery and annotated bibliography series, hosted at The Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology. The books come from my collection, the scanning and cleanup of the art have been a joint project spearheaded with my husband nagasiva, and the write-ups of the books are my own take on what makes each title different from another. This is a one-year Patreon exclusive for those who financially support my writing and research. I greatly appreciate the support, because no one is paying much for popular culture academia projects these days except you, my dear friends, fans, and fellow-travellers. When AI takes over the world and history becomes fiction, you can stand proud and tell your grandchildren, "I sent cat and nagasiva $8.00 per month to scan and catalogue dream books." And your grandkids will reply, "What's a dream book, Grandy?" And you will reply, "Well, Kiddo, i'm not really sure anymore. It was something people made 'way, way back, before before.'"

Find it now at:

Third time's a charm! This is my third update of "The Dowsing Bibliography at YIPPIE" this year, and it will not be the last. I am STOKED on this project and find it difficult to set aside. The first pass was put online in 2010, and it was thoroughly updated in 2020. Last month after five years of dormancy, i brought it back to life with a dozen new entries and almost two dozen new graphics, and earlier this month i added more new books, new cover art, and new information about the books and the authors already listed. But now the train has left the yard and we are getting up to speed! Stick your head out the window, watch the drivers roll. I have got some raries for you this time, and you are gonna love 'em! As a Life Member of the American Society of Dowsers, i am thrilled to bring you personal reviews, commentary, and clean cover shots of my own collection -- from ultra-rare 19th and 20th century dowsing books and pamphlets to the latest new self-published woo-woo wonder. This is the third time my Patrons have supported the Dowsing series hosted at the Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology, and for their financial assistance, they each receive a one-year Patreon exclusive link to the New! This week my Patrons have funded an episode of Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo for the public -- an illustrated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics in which the topic is African-American folk magic. It's 1924 -- 100 years ago -- and Gertrude "Ma" Rainey was singing about her trip to New Orleans to find "that lucky rock," the magical ear bone of a Drumfish. As usual, an MP3 audio file is included so that you can sing along as you study the amazing links between hoodoo and the blues.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

Image

And the hits just keep on happening! This is my fourth update of "The Dowsing Bibliography at YIPPIE" this year, and it will not be the last. I am deep, deep into this project and there is so much more dowsing history to discover, uncover, and recover. The first pass was put online in 2010, and it was thoroughly updated in 2020. In February, after five years of dormancy, i got back to work on it, and since then i have been adding new books, new cover art, and new information about the books and the authors already listed. This week i am showcasing some oldies and introducing some recent titles. As a Life Member of the American Society of Dowsers, it is my pleasure to bring you personal reviews, commentary, and clean cover shots from my own collection -- including the most ultra-rare 19th and 20th century dowsing books and pamphlets and the most useless self-published paper-wasters of the past decade. This is the fourth time my Patrons have supported the Dowsing series hosted at the Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology, and for their financial assistance, they each receive a one-year Patreon exclusive link to the New!

This week my Patrons present the world with an illustrated transcription from my collection of 20th century "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo." It's 1931 and Blind Willie McTell -- or rather, William Samuel McTier in his guise as "Georgia Bill" -- was wanderin' 'round Georgia, waiting for those fried pies to get done, searching for his woman's mojo, and trying to avoid them jinx. It was a "Scarey Day" for him, for sure. As usual, an MP3 audio file is included so that you can sing along as you study the deep-felt links between hoodoo and the blues.

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are getting an illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American rootwork. Today our conjure documentation comes from a 1964 recording by Muddy Waters, in which he sings and plays guitar on a composition by Willie Dixon that describes the many reasons to carry a High John the Conqueror Root. I have written a short biography of Waters, for those who enjoy musical history alongside their education in hoodoo, and thanks to the help of my husband nagasiva, the bio is accompanied by a portrait photo, a label shot, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. This project is being previewed by my patrons, who have a one year exclusive on every week's new web page, in gratitude for their financial support of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and fortune telling.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. This week we release "The Dream Book Bibliography, Part Two at YIPPIE."

Image

This week "The Dream Book Bibliography, Part Two at YIPPIE," takes a long dive down a very specific rabbit-hole, one that will be particularly welcoming to art-spotters and old film buffs. Join me in a throw-back to my fannish days as i unravel the clue-filled linguistic, visual, photographic, and timeline connections between Jean Sothern in "The Mysteries of Myra" (1916), Theda Bara in "The Tiger Woman" (1917), Theda Bara in "Salomé" (1918), Betty Blythe in "Queen of Sheba (1921), and, going the long way around, on to the unnamed artist who painted the cover for "Myra Moore's Dream Book," published in 1921, in Scotland, of all places.

This week in "It's All Ephemera" we offer a new chapter of "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice in Progress" -- spells for tying a man's or woman's nature, capturing their libido and sexual desire. These old conjure spells are the best known, and most often requested, magical methods for holding love, and i am sure you will find them useful ... but only if you are one of my Patreon supporters, because ...

This week in "It's All Ephemera" we give "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice in Progress" a thorough cleaning with washcloth and dishrag spells. Enhance the range of your root doctoring using old-time techniques for job-getting, love-holding, nature-tying, dreaming of your future mate, curing bad luck, protecting yourself from magic, driving enemies away, and cursing -- with nothing more than a washcloth or a dishrag as a personal concern. This great collection of spells dates from 1892 to 1970 and it will surely open your eyes to domestic conjure.

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons will receive a newly illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American rootwork. Today our conjure documentation comes from a 1926 recording written and performed by the Texas blues pianist and singer Victoria Spivey. Spivey's piano playing is legendary, and this song contains a lovely piano break in the middle, but what is most unusual is that it describes in simple terms, with neither mockery nor sexual double entendre, a Louisiana-born root doctor who takes on love cases for broken hearted women, and guides their searches for new lovers. I have written a short biography of Spivey, for those who enjoy musical history alongside their education in hoodoo, and thanks to the help of my husband nagasiva, the bio is accompanied by a portrait photo, a label shot, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. This week's Patreon sneak-peek page consists of a fourth collection of memories and sketches spanning many years of my life. The place: Missouri, a hippie commune. The time: 1972 - 1977. I recently came into a tranch of letters i had written to my beloved mother-in-law about our lives, and work in the field of arts and crafts.

"Experiments in Autobiography" is a new section at the Lucky Mojo domain.

This material has not been formally published as a collection until now. At the present it is intended to be seen by my Patrons only, and it may never reach the public. I dedicate it to Fred Burke and Ignacio Ceja, two long time supporters of my writing.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. After a year, these pages are given to the public to read for free.

Image

This week in "From the Land of Tea," we make a second pass through the almost forgotten world of department store and restaurant tea rooms, including tea rooms that doubled as psychic reading parlours.

Most psychic readers who set up in tea rooms had their own business card, but the tea room proprietors themselves tended to use a standard restaurant advertising medium, the matchbook cover.

At one time matchbooks were given out for free by almost every business in America, but when smoking was outlawed in restaurants, these ubiquitous pieces of commercial art became less common. They are still with us, but most folks now carry petroleum-fueled lighters.

Vintage matchbook covers tell us the amazing history of tea rooms and tea room themes, including tea room divination. This new web page, "Vintage Tea Room Matchbook Covers No. 2," takes us down the matchbook rabbit hole once again, to a little pocket-dimension of graphic delight.

Hello, everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

The Mystic Tea Room is taking a journey to the Continent to visit the amazing bygone landmarks of conditerei, confiserei, patisserie, and hotel-pensione tea culture that flourished in Switzerland during the first half of the 20th century. From the basements of Zurich to the Mythen Mountains of Montana-Vermala, this is a grand tour for all lovers of cozy tea room and restaurant architecture and interior decor -- with a twist Yes, there will be white linen, rattan chairs, floral stencilling, and potted palms, but we will also meet daring American Red Cross volunteers and receive a warning to "use only radio-interference-free devices."

"Old Tea Rooms of Switzerland" is online now for my Patrons, in gratitude for your support. The public will not view it until May 14th, 2026, at which point it will be open to all, as a souvenir of times gone by.

The Mystic Tea Room web site is dedicated to the traditional art of fortune telling by tea leaves, also known as tea leaf reading, cup reading, cup tossing, divination by tea leaves, tasseomancy, and tasseography. If you are not yet familiar with the public portion of the site, check it out!

Reading tea leaves means having tea on hand, so this week we present our second illustrated gallery of antique and vintage tea tins from all around the world. This is all about the Mystic Arts -- with the emphasis firmly on Art. The new array of tins will be on display at the Mystic Tea Room web site for everyone to enjoy in May of 2026, but my dear Patrons will have access to it one full year before the public does.

Hello, everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

You can't read tea leaves without tea, so tasseomancers tend to become tea-lovers, and that means sampling many types of tea. You can't buy tea without a tea company to grow it and importers to blend and pack it. And the tea companies can't tell you how wonderful their tea is without promotional material. Back in the early 20th century, at the height of the proliferation of grocery distributors, every tea company handed out brochures and booklets to magnify the glory of their products, and since this era was also the height of graphic art and design, the tea company booklets were works of stupendous artistry. This week we present a sneak peek at a wonderfully illustrated gallery of antique and vintage tea company booklets. Tea leaf reading is one of the Mystic Arts -- but as a reader, i always put the emphasis firmly on Art. These lovely graphics will be on display at the Mystic Tea Room web site for everyone to enjoy in May of 2026, but my dear Patrons will have access to it for one full year before the public does, in gratitude for their financial support.

[PATRONS GET THE SECRET URL IN EMAIL ONE YEAR BEFORE IT OPENS TO THE PUBLIC]

The Mystic Tea Room web site is dedicated to the traditional art of fortune telling by tea leaves, also known as tea leaf reading, cup reading, cup tossing, divination by tea leaves, tasseomancy, and tasseography. If you are not yet familiar with the public portion of the site, check it out!

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to regularly write new web pages on the history of African-American folk magic. This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" we are releasing an illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American folk magic. Blind Lemon Jefferson, who was born in Texas and recorded in Chicago for Paramount Records, gives us a lesson in how someone can turn a trick -- and to his surprise, the trick is turned on him, in "Broke and Hungry," a classic country blues about what happens when you meet your magical match, and lose.

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons will receive a newly illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about rootwork and conjure. Today our conjure documentation comes from a 1936 recording written and sung by the extremely obscure Tommy Griffin, accompanied by the better-known Walter Vinson (of the Mississippi Sheiks) on guitar and Ernest "44" Johnson on piano. The topic is the use of dream books to interpret dreams, an essential form of African-American fortune-telling. I have written short biographies of Vinson and Johnson, to make up for the utter lack of data about Tommy Griffin, and the page includes a label shot and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. This project is being previewed by my patrons, who have a one year exclusive on every week's new web page, in gratitude for their financial support of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and divination.

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" i release an illustrated and annotated transcription. Johnny Shines, who was born in Frayser, Tennessee, in 1915, travelled and performed with Robert Johnson from 1935-1938, and in 1969 he recorded a previously unknown song composed, but never recorded, by Johnson, called "Going to Algiers." Written in 1935, recorded in 1969, and only released to the public in 1995, this song about a mojo hand and the fabled Seven Sisters of Hoodoo Town came so close to being lost forever that it will make your head spin. No transcription of it exists on the internet as of a year ago, but i have done my best to set forth the lyrics on this rweb page, as part of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and fortune telling.

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons will receive a newly illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about rootwork and conjure. Today our conjure documentation comes from a 1955 recording written by Calvin Carter and sung by the popular rhythm and blues artist Jimmy Reed. The song's topics range from dream books and lucky numbers to mojo hands for love. I have written a short biography of Reed and the page includes a portrait, an album cover, a butterpat from a department store chain mentioned in the lyrics, an MP3 audio file so you can sing along, and a bonus MP3 for an instrumental by Reed which takes its title from the name of a popular conjure root. This project is being previewed by my patrons, who have a one year exclusive on every week's new web page, in gratitude for their financial support of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and divination.

This week is the first part of our set of the 1923 Wills's Cigarette Cards set called "Lucky Charms." This inaugurates the completion of a series on these cards that i first started in 1994. I did not finish the series 30 years ago (So many scans! So much text! Such a slow dial-up connection!) -- but with the financial support of my patrons, we began making weekly updates with new, larger scans, full texts, and additional commentaries. The series release concludes with all 50 cards in beautiful colour with added information about these esoteric objects, plus links to other pages that i have written on these topics over the past three decades.

Find the page now at:

The whole set as planned may be found at the Index for Wills's Cigarette Cards here:

The Lucky W Amulet Archive is a folkloric resource that contains hundreds of interlinked pages describing and illustrating amulets, talismans, lucky charms, and good luck pieces from all around the world and from all eras of history. It is a work in progress, and new pages are added on a regular basis at http://www.luckymojo.com/luckyw.html

Today our conjure documentation comes from a 1932 recording written and performed by J.D. "Jelly Jaw" Short -- one of several blues songs in which the snake (as a metaphor for a man's penis) and the snake doctor or dragonfly (which is reputed to fly down low to tend to and heal wounded snakes) are combined in the person of a root doctor who specializes in curing male erectile dysfunction and female anorgasmia with herbal medicines. I have written a brief biography of Short and the page includes a portrait, a label shot, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. This week is the second part of our set of the 1923 Wills's Cigarette Cards set called "Lucky Charms." This week's Patreon sneak-peek page marks our embarcation into the long and complex work of scanning and transcribing all 50 of the 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt, commenting on their content, and uploading the finished pages to the Lucky W Amulet Archive for permanent display. The amount of behind-the scenes prep work that has gone into this seemingly simple project has been overwhelming, but we have our templates and work-flow in place now, and we hope for smoother (and more rapid) sailing in weeks to come. Today, Aries. Tomorrow ... The World!

Today our conjure documentation comes from a 1935 recording written and performed by Alice Moore (1904 - c. 1950) with piano accompaniment by Peetie Wheatstraw (William Bunch, (1902 – 1941), better known as "The Devil's Son in Law." This week's song is unusual because Moore admits that she does not practice hoodoo, but is looking for a Gypsy to read her lost lover's mind and a conjure doctor to lay tricks that will bring him back to her. I have written a brief biography of Moore and the page includes a portrait, a label shot, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. This is our third foray into the long and complex work of scanning and transcribing all 50 of the 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt, commenting on their content, and uploading the finished pages to the Lucky W Amulet Archive for permanent display. The behind-the scenes prep work that goes into this seemingly simple project is both grueling and finicky, but we have our templates and work-flow in place now, and this week we were able to complete three web pages (a 50% increase over last week and a three-fold increase over our first week on the job). This marks our fourth go-round in the rather complex task of scanning and transcribing all 50 of the 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt, commenting on their content, cross-linking them, and uploading the finished pages to the Lucky W Amulet Archive for permanent display. The behind-the-scenes prep work supporting this seemingly cute project was a bit overwhelming, as we decided to tear our earlier templates down and re-make the code, and we also bought a new, and supposedly better, scanner to replace our old one. After getting the new scanner up and running, we realized it was a TERRIBLE scanner. It could not distinguish denim blue from grey-blue or grey, and it perceived darker blue-green as black! Siva had already scanned several cards ahead and had cleaned up one card, front and back, when he showed me his first results -- and i was horrified! All that work -- and an entire new machine -- useless. The damned scanner was visually auto-tuning chromolithographic ink colours to a limited palette range of pre-sets. I hated it! I wanted to smash it with a hammer! Even a child should not be given a scanner this crappy to use as a pre-school toy! So Siva had to start scanning again, from scratch, while i forged on ahead of him with more text. But without the images, the text was nothing, of course, so we only had one card for our Patrons this week, and getting it online was stressful and wearisome as Hell. Between that unexpected glitch-and-fix and our ongoing care for the shop cat, Boots, who was convalescing in the downstairs bathroom, we ran behind this week. We will get back on track next week. Virgo is now ready for our Patrons to enjoy!

Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons will receive a newly illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about rootwork and conjure. Today we travel to Chicago in 1957 to hear Junior Wells recount how his nationwide search for a rootworker who can break the spell that his lover has laid on him has proven fruitless ... because the woman is herself a conjure doctor and nobody wants to go up against her! I have written a brief biography of Wells and the page includes two portraits, two label shots, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. This project is being previewed by my patrons, who have a one year advance exclusive on every week's new web page, in gratitude for their financial support of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and divination.

This week's Patreon pages present our sixth pass through the scanning, cleanup, and text transcriptions of all 50 of the resplendent 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt, depicting a selected set of precious amulets from the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. I have transcribed, coded, and annotated the final three Zodiac talisman texts and Siva has scanned and cleaned up the images. As we work on each card, we are also cross-linking these miniature chromolithographic masterpieces to other Lucky Mojo pages on astrological folk magic. We will release the full cigarette card set to the public for permanent display at the Lucky W Amulet Archive in weekly increments. Next week we will take a one-week break from this project and thereafter we will make three uploads of these cards and one surprise page per month until all the Lucky Charms pages are finished on October 14th.

Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons will receive a newly illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about rootwork and conjure. Today we travel to Chicago in 1937 to hear mystery songwriter and vocalist Lil Johnson plot her magical revenge against her former roommate! Since no biography is possible, i have written a brief careerography of Johnson and her musical partner, the equally unknown pianist Black Bob, and the page includes a label shot and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. This project is being previewed by my patrons, who have a one year advance exclusive on every week's new web page, in gratitude for their financial support of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and divination.

The Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo site is here:

-- and when you get there, you will see a placard announcing this week's new page ... but you can't click on it unless you are a Patron, because it is for Patrons only ... until July 28th, 2026.

After a year for my Patrons to enjoy, this material will be linked from the public-facing pages of the Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo site. In the meantime, my Patrons also have access to exclusive threads at the Lucky Mojo Forum and participate in discussions with me about my ongoing publications.

This week's page presents our seventh pass through the scanning, cleanup, text transcriptions, and annotations of all 50 of the much loved 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt. These antique trading cards showcase a selected set of the rarest and most precious talismans in the collection of the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. I have transcribed, coded, and annotated the first four of the 38 ancient amulet texts and Siva has scanned and cleaned up their glorious chromolithographic images. As we work on each card, we also cross-link these miniature masterpieces to other Lucky Mojo pages on world-wide folk magic. The finished cigarette cards will all be open to the public as of October 14th in a permanent display at the Lucky W Amulet Archive.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

Image

Earlier this week i wrote a web page for the Association of Independent Readers and Rootworkers (AIRR) on the Black Spiritualist, astrologer, numerologist, root doctor, and illegal lottery promoter Edward H. Lowe, who flourished in Chicago from the 1920s through the 1960s. That got me started going through my data folders, and i decided to bring forward an actual interview with him, conducted by Matilde L. Bunton in 1941 for the never-published book "The Negro in Illinois." For more than 80 years, these faded manuscript pages lay crumbling in a library archive. Now, thanks to digitization and the support of my Patrons, we have transcribed this forgotten piece of hoodoo history for the benefit of all at "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog."

EDWARD H. LOWE, ASTRO-NUMEROLOGIST
(Collected from WPA files, 1941)

[PATRONS GET THE SECRET URL IN EMAIL ONE YEAR BEFORE IT OPENS TO THE PUBLIC]

This illustrated and annotated web page describes rural African-American and Native root doctoring and herbal medicine in the early to mid 20th century.

The Southern Spirits web site includes material about hoodoo gathered from old books, magazine articles, newspapers, and fragments extracted from novels and short stories, annotated with interpretive and comparative notes. If you are not yet familiar with the public portion of the site, check it out!

This week my Patreon supporters get a sneak-peek page presenting 100 years of fine gallery art paintings featuring card readers and their clients. From 1835 to 1935. All of the cartomancers are women, and the works, both European and American, vary in style from portraiture to genre art. A few of the the subjects are Romani -- or pretty young women dressed as stereotypical "Gypsies," but most of them of older women, members of their communities. The overall impression is one of card reading as a domestic form of divination.

This week i have transcribed, coded, and annotated the second four of the 38 ancient amulet texts and Siva has scanned and cleaned up their exquisite chromolithographic images. As we work on each card, i also write commentaries on these miniature masterpieces and cross-link them to other Lucky Mojo pages on world-wide folk magic. This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons will receive a newly illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about rootwork and conjure. Today we touch down in San Antonio, Texas in 1929 to listen to a rather strange song about love troubles, a court case, and, of course, hoodoo folk magic, composed and performed by the Texas musician George "Little Hat" Jones. The page includes a biography of Jones, a portrait, a label shot, an advertisement, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. This project is being previewed by my patrons, who have a one year advance exclusive on every week's new web page, in gratitude for their financial support of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and divination.

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are going to get a newly illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about rootwork and conjure. Today we attend a recording session in Chicago in 1935 to listen to Walter Davis and Henry Townsend performing "Ashes in My Whiskey," a song about poisons -- literal, hyperbolic, and magical. Poor Walter Davis is lucky to be alive, the way they are rooting him. The page includes a biography of Davis, several portraits, a label shot, an advertisement for a notorious laxative, a complete explanation of the spell-work, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. This project is being previewed by my patrons, who have a one year advance exclusive on every week's new web page, in gratitude for their financial support of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and divination.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. After a year, these pages are given to the public to read for free.

The new release joins our previous 20th century menu covers on display at the Mystic Tea Room web site for every tea lover and tea leaf reader to enjoy.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

"The Hypnotism Bibliography, Part Seven at YIPPIE," is yet another installment of my insanely long-running, in-depth Hypnotism History series, hosted at The Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology as a one-year Patreon exclusive for those who financially support my writing.

In this episode, Melvin Powers leaves his home in Irvington, New Jersey, and heads West to Hollywood! Power Publications becomes a dusty memory as Our Hero makes a new home amidst the Eucalyptus and the Palms, founds the Wilshire Book Company, concocts distribution deals with British publishers, searches the Library of Congress for expired copyrights, and satisfies a nation's unspoken need for knowledge. As always, my reviews of these decades-old hypno-books are illustrated and annotated. The aim is not merely to catalogue, but also to educate and entertain -- and whether you are a hypnotist or not, this tour through my personal hypnotism library, gathered over the course of 60 years, will certainly get you to thinking about the nature of your own mind.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

"The Hypnotism Bibliography, Part Eight at YIPPIE," is a train wreck! While chugging clickety-clack down the rails, reviewing and illustrating one old hypno-text after another, i found that someone had thrown the switch and the whole project got shunted onto a sidetrack so overgrown with weeds that we had to send out a road gang to open the way. Hypnotism meets a primate researcher who reports on hypnotizing crayfish! Hypnotism meets the angry spoil-sports of the U.S. Postal Service who hate palmistry even more than they hate hypnotism! Hypnotism meets lip-liners and laxatives in an ostentatious chateau on the Riviera! It all sounds so crazy, and yet, if you read it from start to finish, one paragraph after another, like a long, long string of boxcars carrying everything from dental equipment and small boys to luxury limousines and ex-wives, it will, i hope, make sense to you.

Or maybe you can just count the cars as they roll by and wonder when the bell will stop clanging and the caboose will go by. Will the workers ever get this train back on track and back on schedule? Who knows? Join my Patreon supporters and find out what the heck is going on with the Hypno-Bibliography at the Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology!

We're coming 'round the back stretch with Part 11 (of 15) of our set of educational and illustrative Lucky Charms web pages. We have four more pages released this week. This installment (out of fifteen total) features our diligent scanning, cleanup, text transcriptions, and annotations of all 50 of the classic 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt. These full-colour trading cards present a selected set of the rarest and most valuable magical charms in the collection of the British Museum. This week i have transcribed, coded, and annotated our fifth set of four of the 38 ancient amulet texts and Siva has scanned and cleaned up their exquisite chromolithographic images. As we work on each card, i also write commentaries on these miniature masterpieces and cross-link them to other Lucky Mojo pages on world-wide folk magic. The finished cigarette card set will open to the public as of October 14th in a permanent display at the Lucky W Amulet Archive.

Hoodoo in Theory and Practice: THREE NEW WEB PAGES September 21, 2025

This week in "It's All Ephemera" we give "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice in Progress" a three-page upgrade. For those unfamiliar with it, "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice" at the Lucky Mojo web site consists of hundreds of free pages about African American conjure and root magic that i have written and uploaded to the internet over a period of 31 years. If you are not yet familiar with the site, check it out at:

http://luckymojo.com/hoodoo.html

Patreon members support my work with contributions of $8.00 per month and in gratitude, i give them a one-year advance access to four new articles per month.

This week, to give you all a chance to see how my Patrons are helping you learn hoodoo by funding my work, i am releasing three new pages to the public on the same day that they go out to the Patrons. I have only done this twice before, so be sure to take advantage of the opportunity and read the new pages today, instead of next year. They are:

Algiers Spiritual Supplies:
https://www.luckymojo.com/algiers.html

Five Finger Grass Spiritual Supplies:
https://www.luckymojo.com/fivefingergrass.html

Hindu Grass Spiritual Supplies:

Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

Image

"The Hypnotism Bibliography, Part Nine at YIPPIE," is accompanied by banjos! But just when you feel comfortable with four stout men standing on your chest and abdomen as you lay stiff as a board between the backs of two chairs, along come the Freudians, the Dianeticians, and the just plain looney-tunes doctors who aim to hypnotize you with chloroform and cure your neurosis, depression, inferiority complexes, alcoholism, drug addiction, hay fever, arthritis, dermatitis, lethargy, sex-fetishism, and slipped disks!

Will you survive? Will hypnotism itself survive? Who knows? Join my Patreon supporters and find out what the heck is going on with the Hypno-Bibliography at the Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology!

[PATRONS GET THE SECRET URL IN EMAIL ONE YEAR BEFORE IT OPENS TO THE PUBLIC]

The YIPPIE web site includes bibliographies on an array of occult and spiritual topics and is currently open to the public, for the aid of scholars, researchers, and students at http://yronwode.org

To support me on Patreon, please go to "It's All Ephemera," where you can read my update posts and sign on as Patrons for as little as $8.00 per month:

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. After a year, these pages are given to the public to read for free.

Today i return with pleasure to Vintage Tea Rooms by Location -- in this case to the tea rooms of Italy -- with a gallery of very old postcards, dating back to before World War One, each accompanied by a descriptive caption. These images are now on display at the Mystic Tea Room web site for every tea lover and tea leaf reader to enjoy.

Go to:
https://www.mystictearoom.com/wiki/Italy_Tea_Rooms

and please consider supporting me on Patreon so i can keep on working on "It's All Ephemera!"
