I just put up a web page documenting the day that the cast and crew of
the History Channel show "Weird U.S." came by and filmed the Lucky Mojo
shop. We still don't have a firm air-date for this show (of which we
will only be one segment, of course) -- but it should be sometime in
August. I'll post more when i know more.

In the meantime, the URL for the photos (which were taken by Diana
Edler) is

The show is on The History Channel and from what I can tell actually
started yesterday. Here are the episodes
http://www.historychannel.com/weirdus/?page=episodes

I am not sure which one Lucky Mojo is featured on. The "Weird
Medicine" episode airs 8/8 and mentions "mojo" and San Francisco...so
maybe that is the one to watch out for.

The shows air a couple of times in case you miss it.

Lisa

----

That is correct -- "our" segment of "Weird U.S." -- filmed in part at the Lucky Mojo Curio Co. shop -- will be on the air next week on the History Channel:

Weird Medicine. Airs on Monday, August 8 at 10:00pm ET

Weird Medicine. Airs on Tuesday, August 9 at 2:00am ET

From cornflakes to crystals, no matter how bizarre the
method, Americans haven't been shy about doing whatever it
takes to improve their health. In this episode, hosts Mark
Sceurman and Mark Moran take viewers around the country to
investigate our obsession with weird medicine, and see what
doctors and patients have done over the years to achieve a
healthy life. It all begins at the world's weirdest medical
museum in Philadelphia, and ends up in San Francisco, where
we investigate the latest health fad to hit the
country -- laughter clubs. On our 200-year trip through
history we look at everything from finding your "Mojo"
through a root doctor, to medical quacks like Albert Abrams,
who believed he discovered electronic waves that emit from
human organs. And if that's not enough, we also take a look
at the life of health pioneer John Harvey Kellogg who may
have loved his daily enemas, but still ran the most popular
health spa of the early 20th century. TVPG

Here's a funny item i just turned up ... there's an independent film
called "Root Doctor" (i have not seen it), in which some Lucky Mojo
product labels got enlarged, had our name and address cut off the
bottom and were glued on prop bottles. Check it out at

http://carolina-collaborations.org/imag ... 0014_1.jpg

Pretty odd...

The movie itself is for sale here:

Oh, yeah, cat --

I like the web page where they thank their
contributors, including Pepsi-Cola, and your name is conspicuously
absent. Just another corporate sell-out. :-)

But I'm interested in seeing this DVD anyway, so thanks for posting
the info.

I sent a short letter to the company. my email and their response is
listed. I guess, I am not the first person to email them, by the way
they indentify Cat by her title and last name.

Hello,

Your film, "Root Doctor," was recently brought to my
attention, in a group I belong too. I look forward to viewing this
film. I however, think wrong of you to order product from, The Lucky
Mojo Curio Company, and use Catherine's labels which she designed and
use them on your prop bottles, without giving her credit or
compensation. You even go, so far as to cut off Catherine's company
name and address off the label. (http://carolina-
collaborations.org/images/DSC00014_1.jpg). The least you can do, is
give Catherine credit where credit on your web site.

Thank you,

Their response:

The web master at Carolina Collaborations brought your email to my
attention. Students in the art department at Piedmont Community
College created labels for the set of Root Doctor. I was not aware
that these had been very liberally inspired by Dr. Yronwode's
products. The head of the art department, Sarah Costello, had
students research commercial root products so that the set could look
as authentic as possible. (And, in fact, the designer and I butted
heads a bit on the commercial nature of the set for Onzi Jack's
cabin. The root doctor, Onzi Jack, was supposed to have been a more
rural rootworker, an `herbs from the kitchen garden type.') The
designer wanted to give the cabin a "shop" look to give the set more
color and make it more in tune with contemporary practices. Please
let your fellows know that had I realized the students' labels were
so directly inspired by current products, we would have contacted Dr.
Yronwode or made the students alter the labels to be more purely
fictional. I know that when it comes to writing their own papers,
students borrow very liberally from the Internet. I didn't expect
this to be the case with design as well. In the future I will make
sure the Art Director has more oversight on these designs.

Thank you for your interest in our film. As a largely student
product, I had believed these to be "off the cultural radar." I'm
surprised someone noticed it.

Regards,
-e

(Hey, that was cool of you to write. I never expect compensation, but these film companies usually have me sign a release. Well, i shall puchase a copy of "Root Doctor", just because i am curious as to what a student-made film about a North Carolina root doctor would be like. It sounds interesting! --cat)

The secret it to glue everything on with Automotive Goop. It is a slow-drying semi-flexible adhesive that won't "pop" off when your car hits a bump.

Hi, folks --

Professor Charles Porterfield and i have crafted two new vintage-style root doctor's travelling bags, one for a man and one for a woman. These are being released today -- only the second and third such root doctor bags we have made. (The first was the Nurse's Bag #1 for a sex worker / conjure lady, and sold within one week.)

Rather than try to describe these outstanding bags, allow me simply to direct you to their web pages, where byou will find pictures and a full list of conetnts for each:

Charles and i loved making these. Although each of them is credited to one of us, we both worked on each other's bags, and had a fun time doing so. I hope to see him again this May and we will make a couple more then, if we have time. I am also taking commissions on custom bags of this type, as i have quite an accumulation of antique doctors' bags, nurse's bags, and leather make-up cases ("train cases") that i can fill with a mix of vintage and new products.

What would be the best way to contact you about a commission for one of these wonderful things? I plan on scheduling a reading with you soon, would it be appropriate to discuss it then or would you prefer I contact you through other means?

Turnsteel, i'd be glad to talk about making a "bespoke" bag for you after our reading, if i have extra time. I usually schedule a short "bumper" slot between readings, but if you ask to be "the last reading of the day" when you make your appointment, then i will be sure to have more time, as there will be no calls after yours, and we can spend more time on the phone.

With a credit card! :-)

Seriously, call the shop. If you want either of these bags, they are ready to go. If they have sold by the time you call, you can request a custom bag and i will probably need to talk to you about what you have in mind and the size of bag and price range that suits you. Make an appointment for us to talk; i am booked with readings a large part of each day.

That box is the interior container for all of the herb and root packets. The green-labelled box holds the 4" candles. By the way, that bag has been sold, but if you wish me to construct a similar one for you, as a custom project, i would be very glad to do so.

These bags are simply amazing! I remember my partner and I found a black antique doctor's bag at an antique mall near our home, and though it was way more than we could afford at the time, we spent a long time looking inside it and touching the handle. It just gave off the most amazing feeling of care and comfort, so different from an impersonal visit to the local primary care collective of today. :p The bag was sold when we went back, but we still think about it.

I would love to have a bespoke bag done up for me. I'll have to save up my money and think about what needs are best for me, and for the work I do for my friends. Thank you so much, miss cat, for creating such an incredible item, and for providing so much of your wisdom in these sites. I've found this site and store to be an amazing resource in my studies, trying to resurrect the Appalachian magic I learned as a child. I've lurked for ages, but I saw these bags and I knew I had to sign up and comment!

Can't wait to see what the next one looks like!

These bags are worthwhile investments for both traveling root doctors and people interested in works of art. The effort that goes into them is simply stunning. I ordered mine and had it customized by Miss cat (who knew what type of work I do so was able to make sure the bag had the products I'd need) and the lovely Angela.

I got the bag today and took it with me to a clients house that I was cleansing. I loved having the bag with me--I really felt like I was channeling the traveling root doctors of old. It not only had everything I needed, but is put together so well that even my client was fascinated by it :-)

I love my bag and highly recommend it to others. It's simply beautiful.

Thank you Miss cat! I shall treasure my root doctor's bag!

Love the Jinx and Jinx Killer labels! Follow Me Girl is classic...and Jezebel is perfect! Way to go on those.
