Hey Folks,
Just wanted to introduce myself. Last year I started taking an interest in the Tarot, and wound up purchasing Sallie Ann Glassman's New Orleans Voodoo Tarot, because I wanted something that had images of people of color and spoke to my African American cultural background. This, in turn, led me to do research on Hoodoo and Voodoo and to learn a little bit about the difference between these two magico-religious systems. My attempts to teach myself about Hoodoo from books by Haskins, Mickaharic, Riva, etc. have been really slow-going. I want to take Cat's course, but I'm not sure if I need to do more preparation by reading other authors first. Anyway, I look forward to interacting with the other contributors to this site and learning more about Hoodoo.

The more books you read, the better informed you will be, up to certain point -- namely, the point at which authors begin to contradict one another, which, of course, happens in every field of knowledge and is only to be expected.

The difference between such books and my course (which is also a book, 432 pages long) is that the course is organized in a structured way that will lead you from one technique and topic to another, providing a historical overview for each topic, and then giving practical techniques, my personal experiences, and answers to common questions about each form of work.

In order to take the class, however, applicants must be more than book-students or researchers of the work. I require applicants to be customers of Lucky Mojo who have previously purchased at least some of our herbs, minerals, oils, candles, incense, powders, and other products in a quantity sufficient to make me confident there will be no false starts from students who have never actually seen conjure oils or candles, for instance, or worked with them.

In the meantime, feel free to browse the forum, interact with our community, and follow your interests in all forms of African diasporic magical traditions.

Thanks, Catherine. I know you are busy operating the store, so I truly appreciate the personal response. I think Lucky Mojo is doing great work in and for this tradition. I look forward to establishing a relationship with the store, and to eventually becoming a student.
