Name Change, Too! - Jujugiggles to Devi Spring

Unread post by Devi Spring » Sun Sep 19, 2010 10:58 am

Hello Everyone!

Most of the regulars here for the past year or so will be familiar with my postings as "Jujugiggles", which I registered with as it's one of my internet nicks. However I do work professionally in both rootwork and energetic healing, and also am frequently published in various BBI Media magazines (newWitch / Witches&Pagans, PanGaia, Sage Woman) under my name Devi Spring. After speaking with Miss Cat, I felt it made sense to just leave the internet nick behind and begin posting under my working name. So you'll now see me here on the forum as Devi Spring!

I guess I might as well post a wee about me here for those newer to the forum since this is the introductions section after all. :)

I come from a family of gifted women - everyone has slightly different gifts and develops them (or not, as the case may be) in different ways ; but most of us end up in some form of spiritual work, though as far as I'm aware I'm the first to do this in a professional capacity. We have a loooong family line rooted in New Orleans (since the mid-1800's at least, with many still living there today), and so I did learn bits of pieces of lore as a child living in central Florida - though sadly my Granny was one of the women that mostly rejected her gifts, so there was less to be passed along than I would have liked. I was raised in an evangelical Christian church, though I never felt completely comfortable in that particular denomination. However, seeing first-hand manifestations of the Holy Spirit several times a week definitely made a very potent and positive impact on me, and certainly instilled a deep faith and belief in the power of God.

I've spend the bulk of my adult life studying magic, religion, and spirituality both formally and through independent research and practice. I've been active in the NeoPagan community since 1997, and while having a very eclectic knowledge base and did train with an Alexandrian Wiccan High Priestess for awhile, I was eventually drawn most heavily into an Eastern-oriented practice, and my degree focus for my Religious Studies BA was in Hinduism. I've done a great deal of work with the IndoPagan communities (those that blend Eastern paths such as Hinduism and Buddhism with various NeoPagan faiths and structures), and am often commissioned to write about topics relating to that NeoPagan niche by BBI Media, as well as being a list owner for several online IndoPagan communities. I am a devotee of Ganesha, Durga, and Lakshmi and feel most closely connected with their energies, and have strong experiences and links with Shiva, Kali, Saraswati, and Radhe-Krishna as well. I have also taken several of the lay vows within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, and practice Buddhist meditation regularly. I particularly enjoy aiding people who wish to incorporate work with the Hindu deities into their own path, by helping them find a way to integrate traditional Hindu elements into their practice in order to garner very positive and expedient results, while keeping everything accessible and understandable to a Western mind (as well as respectful of the cultural origins of the deities and spirits). I've found that working with the Hindu deities in a blended practice that includes conjure has been a very potent brew!

Over the years, and directly related to my rootwork (Thank you so much Miss Cat and Lucky Mojo for opening that door for me), my spirituality has become a pretty evenly balanced path reflecting East and West. My temple-based training within a Qabalist ceremonial magical lodge, my own roots in the Christian religion, and my ever deepening conjure practice all brought Judeo-Christian spiritual currents strongly back into my life - and I'm very grateful for that. Having an ancestral heritage that is both rooted in New Orleans and in Mexico, I have found myself organically incorporating many folk Catholic practices into my work. I have an extremely close relationship with St. Michael and have found that his aid is in no way limited to the realms of protection, and he has helped me deepen my spirit work tremendously. I also have worked closely with St. Dymphna for aiding those with and those caring for individuals with concerns about various aspects of mental wellness. My work as a healer led me to Dr. Jose Gregorio Hernandez, and he also has come through for me, my family, and clients in a big way multiple times. And there are certainly other saints that I have successfully petitioned as well, including the ever popular St. Expedite.

I do consider myself a universalist when it comes to religion and spirituality, and I don't really label my own path anymore because of that.
I welcome all paths and orientations at my multi-cultural altars!
I feel conjure has really helped me to re-connect with the true spirit of my Southern roots, and created a very interesting gumbo of a path for me.

Sorry for being so long-winded! LOL - I have a large amount of Air in my birthchart, so hopefully that gives me a bit of a good excuse. ;)

It's definitely a process to really feel ready for that. I feel very grateful to you Miss Cat for helping prod me along, and I really feel my ancestors have starting opening a few new doors as well. There have been a great many positive and life-altering changes with me over the past 2 years, and things are starting to unfold in a novel and beautiful way.

Thank you kindly for having me here and allowing me to participate. I continue to learn so much from you, the other experienced posters and moderators, and from the talented workers at the AIRR.

I hope that continues. ;)

That is great Devi! I re-welcome you now! LOL

Is it at all possible for me to get my user name changed to Joseph Magnuson. Ritual Sound is nice and all, but I would much rather be recognized by my true name on here. Hindsight and all!

Congratulations Devi...you are a giant ball of helpfulness! To me and countless others.

Dear Devi,
I have been reading this forum for many months now, and I always love to read your advice regarding all kinds of situations. You give logical, concise, and practical advice and make it easy for the lay person to understand. Thank you so much.

Your path is very interesting to me as I have a great interest and pull to the Hindu deities and Hoodoo as well. I thank you so much for sharing your path, it makes me excited to think that it is possible to carve my own path as you have done!! These two seemingly opposite things can exsist in the same spiritual path and be successful. I'm so excited.

I was wondering if it would be okay for me to PM you privately, if you are willing to speak to me about your path and such.

Blessings always,
Stacy

This post some how came up in my search :) Congratulations Devi! :) I'm very intrigued by all of your religious outlets. It's kind of funny, Ganesha, growing up was my favorite God, as well as Krishna. I feel like I've had a falling out with my Hindu Gods. I've been lighting candles to Catholic saints at our Family Hindu Shrine, for the first time this year, and I've been seeing and feeling so much more progress.

They normally say, in any Hindu ritual, You first worship Ganesha, then Shiva/Parvathi, then Vishnu before Lakshmi, Radha/Krishna (incarnates of Vishnu/Lakshmi) Would you have any suggestions of how to combine conjure with bonding with Hindu Deities? As a child, I felt so close to them, but I feel like I'm falling out with them. I love Hanuman and Durga, I can really feel their energies sometimes. Would you also have any suggestions with bonding closer to St. Dymphna?

Also, Have you heard of Shirdi Sai Baba? He's absolutely amazing to work with as well. His days are Thursdays, and it's interesting because he represents hinduism and islam in India, which is a rare combination.

I'm looking forward to receiving your wisdom :)

love, Mimiso

I've PM'd you as it's a wee off topic.

But I will heartily recommend the LM line of Hindu deity products - they are fabulous!

I don't think it's off-topic at all. After all, Lucky Mojo does sell a full line of products for petitioning the more popular Hindu deities.

LOL, Mama Micki, I guess you're right. I've been getting so many questions about this lately that I'm going to write a more detailed blog entry on it.

In the meantime, here's the basic gyst of how I approach the practice of blending Hindu deities with conjure. Your mileage may vary, and I certainly do not claim to be doing things the Only Right Way.

I always incorporate a mini-puja where the 5 elements are offered (earth-food, fire-lamp/candle, air-incense, water-water, spirit-mantra), with time spent chanting and then just calling to them from the heart.

I would suggest working to rebuild your connection with them before trying to petition them for anything other than just their presence.

But when you move into petitioning them, I always perform puja first, and then invoke their aid with my petition and conjure. I don't really change too much about the conjure itself at that point, except I use mantra instead of Christian-style prayer and of course I'm asking for their aid and not any other spirit from any other tradition.

Finding an appropriate mantra can really help as well. Healing Mantras and Shakti Mantras are two great books by Namadeva Acharya (aka Thomas Ashley-Farrand) that help you find a mantra that energetically targets particular goals. As I chant an appropriate mantra, I visualize the sound taking the form of my petition being granted - so that see that happening with each recitation of the mantra. That's at least 108 times of seeing it happen in one sitting, though if you have the endurance doing 10 rounds of japa is ideal.

And, yes, always acknowledge Ganesha in some way before moving into petitioning any other deities. He's the gatekeeper, and it's spiritual protocol to honor him first. Trust me, it will make things go easier. :)

I've been asked a couple times in the past week if I use Christian prayer/psalms, etc with the Hindu deities. If I'm petitioning the Hindu deities, I just leave it with them and keep it within the Hindu tradition. I try to keep my spirit-systems separate unless I get specifically guided to blend them. I don't think Ganesha would mind working with other spirits, but Durga and Kali might depending on the circumstances, and I'm sure there some others that might not get on so well with other pantheons.

Speaking of some spirits not getting along with others... you're probably aware of some inter-Hindu feuds between the deities, or taboos for certain spirits? Such as you can never have Lakshmi and Saraswati on the same altar together unless you put someone else in the middle to mediate - usually you'll see Ganesh in that role, though sometimes you'll find Durga. In some traditions, Ganesha also does not like tulsi, so never use tulsi malas in his devotions; sandalwood or rudraksha are safer bets. Of course NEVER offer meat of any kind to Krishna, and generally don't offer beef or alcohol to the Hindu deities (unless you are petitioning a tantric aspect that accepts such things, or you're working in another blended tradition that has its own methods of offering that's been negotiated with the deities).

So there are just little things like that to be aware of, but mostly if you honor them with sincerity they will help guide your practice. I find Ganesha is actually the most active guide in that respect. I've had some pujaris and priests tell me the same thing.

Hope that is of interest. :)
Of course the Lucky Mojo product line of Hindu deities is a fantastic resource to have available, and that line smells divine.
