Hi there

Unread post by CatholicHoodoo » Mon Jan 24, 2011 1:43 am

I'm a catholic interested in hoodoo.I live in the north which is ironic considering what Ive read implies that hoodoo is primarily a southern tradition.
Anyway I got several questions though not all of them should be asked here but ill ask this one,
Is it possible to practice hoodoo as a Catholic and if so where should I begin?

Hi there,
Hoodoo is a form of folk magic that is practiced by many people from many different religious paths nowadays. However, it is primarily an African American form of folk magic which was framed and incubated within African American religious experiences which are primarily of the protestant Christian variety (mostly Baptist). At the same time there are long standing traditions of African American Catholics especially in states like Maryland and Louisiana (which were traditionally more tolerant of Catholics or had large influxes of Catholic immigrants than some of the other colonies) so there have been Catholic elements in Hoodoo for a long time. As you read through posts here on the forum you will notice that many folks petition Saints on a regular basis and Lucky Mojo makes lines of incenses, oils, sachet powders, and bath crystals for Saints and Angels. To learn more about this particular form of folk magic and its relationship to Christianity and Catholicism I recommend you start here:

Yeah Ive been reading that. I wonder if anyone could explain the relationship between New Orleans voodoo and hoodoo? I did read through at least one section on the book that mentioned that in some detail.

Voodoo is a spirit-religion with doctrine, dogma, and clergy--there are different traditions, but these three are generally the same in each of these traditions.

Hoodoo is the folk-magical practices of African Americans. It's as simple as that.

To gain an introduction into conjure/hoodoo please read the link Miss Bri gave you and I shall repost it here:

This link is part of a free ebook written by Miss cat called Hoodoo In Theory and Practice and it will help you get started and will even answer your question in regards to hoodoo vs. voodoo.

If you have any questions regarding the spiritual products of Lucky Mojo please don't hesitate to post.
