New Orleans Hoodoo

Unread post by Beaux » Wed Feb 13, 2013 10:06 pm

Hello everyone!
I grew up in the New Orleans area, mostly indoctrinated by New Orleans style Catholicism. Lately, and after moving away, a new interest in Voodoo, specifically New Orleans/Louisiana flavored Hoodoo/Conjure, has hit me. I'm still new to this world, and enjoying the podcasts and articles I can find, and astounded how much the Catholicism I was introduced to as a child is so close to a lot of the Voodoo/Hoodoo practices and less like Catholicism at large.

Looking forward to anything I can learn and anything I can share and teach!

Hello, Beaux, and welcome to the Lucky Mojo flrums.

A lot of what was/is called "Voodoo", in New Orleans, is actually hoodoo. Conjure practice there, and in a few other places (like Baltimore), has a stronger Catholic influence, rather than the more widely represented Protestant flavor.

Voodoo is an African Diasporic Religion, that came in from Haiti. It is a beautiful religion, but it and hoodoo are not the same thing. Even at their African roots, the differ. Voodoo (Vodoun) is a West African tradition, while much of the magical technology that is part of hoodoo is from Central Africa, though it hasn't retained very much (or any, depending on how you look at it) of the religious aspects. Some writers have posited that Voodoo and hoodoo are more closely tied together, but I don't think history and magical theory support this claim.

All that said, I hope to be able to talk with you, further. I love New Oreans, and would love to hear what you have to share about growing up in such a conjure-rich place.

Welcome, again.

Welcome Beaux! I am Catholic too ( from Mobile) and trying to learn this tradition as well. You know Marie Laveau was a devout Catholic. She attended mass everyday and visited prison folk - especially those condemned to die. Let's learn together! ;)

New Orleans is a wonderful place. I spent 9 months there not to long ago.

Was there for the Saints Superbowl Victory celebration at Carnival.
