"Your Wate and Fate" goes to the movies to take a first look at the 20th century's slightly weird obsession with Crystal Balls in Film! From comedies and musicals to action dramas, crime thrillers, and heart-warming family features, crystal balls of all sizes -- but only one shape -- were everywhere in Hollywood from the silent 1910s to the Great Odometer Roll-Over. This collection of annotated images is just the tip of the crystal, and there will be lots more to come as we scan, clean, upload, and identify the turbaned fortune tellers and bejewelled prophetesses who made the movies great.

"Your Wate and Fate" takes in a fast-paced second feature as we continue our look at the 20th century's eccentric portrayal of Crystal Balls in Film! This time the focus is on Niko Tinbergen and the Supernormal Stimuli -- crystal balls so large that entire people can be seen within. Yes, from "The Mask of Fu Manchu" and "The Return of Chandu" to "The Wizard of Oz," it's time to break out the Big Balls! This collection of annotated images in which fortune telling meets iconic pop culture, is not the last of our visions, for there are still more cinematic crystals to scan, clean, upload, and identify, and we have not yet reached the end of the turbaned racketeers and veiled prophetesses who made the movies marvelous.

"Astrology for Rootworkers" has shipped from the printers and will debut at the 2023 Virtual Hoodoo Heritage Festival, June 10th - 11th, as nagasiva and i continue to expand our heavily illustrated bio-bibliography honouring Prof. A. F. Seward (1877-1965). We have to have the page finished by the time the book is released to the public, and we are adding new images and text daily. This week "Your Wate and Fate" offers more photos, artwork, and text drawn from my 12 years of obsessed research into the life of the eccentric Scorpio who invented Sun-Sign Astrology! This week, we leap into the past, exploring the tea rooms of bygone America, specifically in Massachusetts, a state replete with historical buildings, old mills, hooked rugs, and colonial-style furniture. Nagasiva and i have piled on more text and more images to our profusely illustrated and annotated bio-bibliography of the "World's Foremost Astrologer," Prof. A. F. Seward (1877-1965). This week we present Prof. Seward to the modern astrological community in his role as a global tourist, who sought out and studied with elder astrologers in Egypt, India, and Japan during the era between the two World Wars. This is our SIXTH and FINAL pass through the A. F. Seward page before it debuts to the public this weekend when my own new book, "Astrology for Rootworkers," is distributed to attendees at the 2023 Virtual Hoodoo Heritage Festival, June 10th - 11th. This week, "Your Wate and Fate," jumps back, for the fourth time into the long-gone lives of the psychic readers, numerologists, clairvoyants, tea leaf readers, and cartomancers of the 19th and 20th centuries!

Three previous outings into "The Realm of the Readers" revealed a wide range of seers, both Black and White, from all around the country and the world. This time we visit a 1938 Fortune Tellers' Convention, and check in on a touring clairvoyant from Vienna, Prague, and Berlin who speaks many languages, and has amazed the crowned heads of Europe before fetching up in San Francisco, California, where she charges a dollar a reading to Ladies, and two dollars a reading to Gentlemen. Thanks to the support of my Patrons, there is a new public web page online at SouthernSpirits.org that describes conjure, root doctoring, and witchcraft among enslaved and emancipated people of African descent in Georgia. This illustrated and annotated web page describes conjure, root doctoring, and witchcraft as practiced among formerly enslaved and recently emancipated people of African descent in the state of Georgia prior to 1900. Detailed accounts of several cunjer doctors personally known to the author are given, including their names and locations, making this a valuable research document for genealogists as well as rootworkers. The accounts of several cunjer wars comprise most of the text, but there are dozens of cursing, protective, and curing spells included as well. Techniques involve making cunjer bags, scattering herbs and graveyard dirt, laying tricks in a person's path, and crafting spiritual poisons. Find it at:

The 20th century was a time when lucky tokens, pocket pieces, and mascots were manufactured in vast quantities and given out to customers by companies of all kinds. Everyone believed in luck in those days, and these talismans, often called "Good Luck Coins," although they had no monetary value, were carefully saved by the folks who were got them. I have collected such exonumia for more than 50 years, and a couple of decades ago i put a few samples up for show at my Lucky Mojo site. This week i am sharing another batch of them, with commentary.

Trade cards, not to be confused with trading cards, were elaborate business cards popular during the late 19th century. Using the chromolithography printing process, they bore colourful images, the name of the business, and, sometimes, text on the reverse. This week we showcase the "U. S. Coins and Currency" trade cards printed by W. W. Chew of Philadelphia and marketed by John W. Roberts of San Francisco in 1881.

One month ago we released a new web page on 20th century lucky tokens, pocket pieces, and mascots from the 20th century. These coin-like objects were manufactured by custom mints in brass, bronze, or copper, and some of them were gilded. Later examples were stamped of aluminum, when that became a cheaper metal than brass. They given to customers by companies and to voters by politicians, as fancy calling cards. Many people wanted luck, especially during the Great Depression, and although they had no monetary value, these talismans, called "Good Luck Coins" by the public, were carried on the person, placed in the change pockets of wallets or purses, or thrown into change drawers by the folks who got them. I have collected such exonumia for more than 50 years and this week i am sharing a new batch of them, with commentary, at Your Wate and Fate.

Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog: A Racist Folklorist in 1891 (Patreon Tier 1, September 7th, 2023)

Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

In this installment of "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," we view a difficult collection of hoodoo beliefs and practices from 1891, compiled by an amateur folklorist whose racism is obvious, but whose information is unique and therefore important in terms of what it offers to modern historians of African-American folk-magic. Sara M. Handy wrote this piece in 1891, and despite its ugliness and errors, it still offers us a good view of the conjure practices of Black Americans in Virginia halfway between the end of slavery in 1865 and America's entry into the First World War in 1917. And, as always, i take care to unpack the antiquated terminology, correct the errors, and offer some insights into the life of the author.

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" we travel back 100 years, to 1923, as i bring you another illustrated song transcription from my collection documenting African-American folk magic through evidence found in early 20th century song lyrics. Hazel Meyers describes the terror she felt when she dreamed about a graveyard and spoke to the gravedigger. Was it "only a dream" or was it a "true dream," a premonition of tragedy to come? For 65 years no one did more to bring hypnotism before the public -- and this week, i am presenting some of his best work in the form of annotated reviews and cover illustrations. A mentor and friend to many, Melvin Powers deserves a full biography, but until one is written, this bibliography will help to keep his memory alive.

It's another journey into the bygone tea rooms of 20th century America, this time in Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania. On today's trip we will visit a tea room based on a once famous radio show, two Chinese tea rooms, one Japanese tea room that served Chinese food, and an American tea room that used Japanese imagery but served only "home cooking."

In cataloguing articles for the Lucky W Amulet Archive, i have strayed at times from the intent conveyed by the name "Lucky W" -- for in addition to lucky charms and amulets, i have also included apotropaic or protective talismans, and also religious icons from many of the world's cultures. This week, our luck meanders into Roman Catholic veneration of one of the most beautiful apparitions of the Virgin Mary, namely, Our Lady of Charity of Cobre, Cuba. Once again in cataloguing articles for the Lucky W Amulet Archive, i have strayed from the intent conveyed by the name "Lucky W" -- and this week i am presenting one of the best known venerational images of the Roman Catholic faith, Maria Dolorosa del Monte Calvario. Here, for my Patrons, is an article i wrote in 2006, but never published on my web site, now fully illustrated, that tells the story of this beautiful depiction of Mary and how it entered the folk religions of Latin America and the Caribbean.

This week in "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," we venture North to Pennsylvania to learn about Alta C. Meskell, an "Indian Herbalist" and self-declared "physician" born in 1875 who got busted by the Food and Drug Administration for selling herbal medicines -- and lucky for us, the FDA analyzed and recorded the ingredients of each and every one of her formulas!

This week in "It's All Ephemera" i looked over the table of contents to my free online book about African American folk magic, "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice," and found another unwritten chapter -- "Photographs in Hoodoo" -- and so here it is, as part of the series i call "A Hoodoo Hand."! First, it's amazing to see someone detailing the history of Romani people. Romani are a significant minority in my country. The Romanian derogatory term for them is "tigani".

Romani suffered immense marginalization during the Middle Ages in Wallachia and Moldova. They were essentially slaves in the Orthodox Monasteries or around manors. I have one particular Romanian idiom in mind that captures their deplorable conditions. In the mid 19th century, Romanian intellectuals schooled in France came back and demanded Romani's release from slavery and humiliation. By 1848, Europe witnessed revolts in many countries. Moldova and Wallachia were no exception. Finally, in 1855/1856, Romani people were granted freedom.

In popular culture they are known as great singers using accordions in particular. One popular saying is that Romani people "learn by the ear" how to sing and play instruments due to the obvious lack of higher education. Romani women and sometimes men learnt from generation to generation magic spells and chants. They are predominantly Christian. Romani women also travel from village to village selling clothing, quilts or brooms.

My aunt stumbled in her youth upon a Romani woman who read her palms. The fortune teller, according to my aunt, had predicted circumstances that came to pass such as the number of her children and their gender. She also forewarned about the age when my aunt will pass away.

It's a topic that can in certain horrifying circumstances be paralleled with the situation of Black people in the United States.
