Thank you Cat, I was wondering and it is always good to hear if anyone else has read or heard/learned anything. For the time being I will just thank the earth for an interesting thing as the acorn. Possibly some crafts to enjoy around the house would satisfy my being drawn to them. Thanks for your input I appreciate it.

catherineyronwode wrote:The use of acorns in magic and folklore is a European thing that never really got carried over into hoodoo. Nutmegs, which are imported, are used, as are Buckeye nuts, which are native ... but i have never heard an old time root doctor tell me to use an acorn.

Just because a plant exists, that doesn't mean that we are entitled to manufacture a use for it in hoodoo. If you want to learn about Acorns in magic, study the beliefs of a culture that does use Acorns in magic.

To Copperfox: You will not get far in this world or on this forum if you think you can "hoodoo it up" or give others advice to "hoodoo it up." That is rank bullshit. It is disrespectful to African American culture and history. It is Pat Boone singing Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti." On the other hand, if Acorns truly do have magical properties in your culture, then by all means respectfully use them as they would be used in your culture, whatever that is.

Thank you HD, I apologise for putting it in the wrong place. I have been working under the guidance of an AIRR reader, and after I posted it occurred to me I should have just asked her, which I did... but I let the post remain in case anyone had experienced this. No problem, thank you for your reply and I'll know in future :)

Hey All...

I was on the LM website 3 or 4 days ago and came across a page that had herbs & such grouped & listed by purpose. It was late at night and I had a paper to finish...I meant to bookmark the page but called it a night before doing so. While sleeping my computer processed some updates, restarted itself....and I have not been able to find the page again....and I've now been looking for 2 days.

Does anyone have know the web page to which I am referring? Have I completely lost my mind? Actually it's not necessary to answer that last question....

Anyway, if you have it saved as a bookmark, or can provide me with the link...I would certainly appreciate the thoughtfulness.....

Thanks bunches....

Hahahah you wouldn't believe it, but the exact thing happened to me.. Twice!
The first time I was wondering if I was hallucinating as well, since it's next to impossible to actually find it through the main site :D

Here's the link, so now even if you forget to bookmark it, it's nice and safe here in your thread, haha

You could also buy Cat's book Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic to get more information on herbal spells. Also, you don't have to turn on your computer!

The section grouping herbs by purpose is in the back of the book.

There is a bat nut that is used in protection work.

But it would really help to know what the spell is for.

That being said it could very well literally mean a bat's eye - so your best bet would be to figure out what energy that curio was bringing to the work so you can sub in something with the same purpose/energy.

Ah - so it's probably taking advantage of the bat's eye sight at night (which is a bit of a fallacy since bats use echolocation and not their eyes to see in the dark) to help you identify and avoid danger.

Unless you have a source for bats eyes, then I would substitute something that has the same general effect. So you'll have to get creative, or simply just use another protective ingredient to keep the number of ingredients the same.

You could also have a reading with an AIRR worker and get them to make up a mojo or spell kit that has the same intended result. But you'll have the assurance of knowing that what they'll put together for you will be effective, rather than going by guesswork if you're new to the work and unfamiliar with all the various herbs and curios that can be used in rootwork.

Light a white candle dressed with Holy oil, Protection oil, or Archangel Michael oil and say Psalm 91.

Hi Brida,

I remembered reading this thread awhile ago and came to check how it worked out. See any results? I plan on doing something similar this week, so I'd like any input from you (:

Hi everyone!!!

Okay, so here are the results! I just got back from my Friday evening Community event in which the family of the man I love attends every Friday. His mother invited me for lucheon TOMORROW!!!! I will be going to his parent's house for lunch, and I will get to see the house that he grew up in. I am supper excited, and scared at the same time. It feels as if I am really getting close, and I don't know what magic to do while there. I am thinking of taking some of my oils, and powders, and putting some on things in his old room, that he stays in when he visits his parents on the weekends. What shall I do?

Baking magic works, if your intent is strong, and you take the time and energy to really work it. I will continue to bake magical goods, and know in my heart that I will be with the man of my dreams, God willing.

Anyone have any recipes to share or stories of baking magic?

with hugs,
Brida

While I have no experience in baking magick, I'd say take some of your magical baked goods with you as a gift to literally sweeten the event. I usually don't use oils when going to other people's houses because people usually realize they've touched something, but I'd sprinkle some powders all over your paramour's room ;-). Keep it light so to not be too obvious. Kiss Me Now, Fires of Love, Follow Me Boy, Love Me are all great powders to work with. Let us know how it goes and Good luck!

I know that LM grows most of their herbs, so there's no doubting the quality. However, is there a general shelf life for packaged herbs when it comes to rootwork? My herbs are sealed in baggies and kept at a temperate climate in a box without sunlight exposure, but I wanted to make sure that dried roots purchased a few months or years ago are just as magically potent as herbs purchased last week.

I know that for the most part hoodoo is a Southern practice and that the American South isn't know for it's abundance of snow. However with all the excess precipitation that the Northeast has been getting lately, I cannot help but wonder if there is any snow lore in hoodoo. I am on the broke side lately, so I was wondering if snow would be good for banishing negativity(such as financial troubles and/or general bad luck) or road opening type of work. I imagine it as a "As this snow melts, so do my troubles" type of thing.

Has anyone done any snow work to banish negativity or draw opportunity to themselves?
I'd love to read about everyone's experience and maybe learn a trick or two.

I apologize if this is in the wrong spot, but I did not know what other section of the forum would be appropriate.

Well, personally i have never heard of snow and conjure having any significance in hoodoo. I would think that it could be used to freeze someone. But I would be cautious to use snow as a use for banishing negative or to do road opening work because if you are in a spot of the country where you are in a terrible blizzard or it snows for days straight or it snows one day and then it is sunny then it snows again...then you would hardly have an open road. Thats just the idea that I had. If you are on the broke side do a road opener, or try a fast luck spell for some easy money. Then back it up with some Money stay with me work. Perhaps you are going to have to get a second job if possible and you can use a spell for that.

I understand your thinking with the snow, but do not let the snow hold you back from getting what you might need. Ooh and also make sure you cleanse yourself FIRST. That is a good start to getting some of the bad luck coming your way.

I've heard of melting snow for natural water, but that's it. Of course, conjure is all about being creative - so play around and see what manifests!

Snow is actually used as a source of "live water." You can melt the snow and use it in various baths and cleansings and it works wonderfully. Its just like going and finding a magical well, or other source of live water. Incorporate it in your work and bathe in the fresh, clean water, and wash away all the negativity.

I live in the northeast and while snow is not spoken of in hoodoo I use it in my practice. For example take the snow from their foot track the same way you would dirt and use it for the same things. Snow can be bought from a grave the way dirt can, and while it is not as powerful it does have strength.

Well If it is a whole herb ( Herbae ) it should last generaly for a year . Roots and barks ( radix , cortex ) can last up to two years. That is in general dried herbs shelf life , in conditions that You metonioned. As for magickal purposes, they should be good as long as not rancid, and according to tradition as long as they do not touch the Earth.

Hope it helps. Blessings !

Hello again!

Okay so I have been working on baking spells on his family. The family is cool with me, butI have not heard or seen anything from him. I am not giving up. I have waited years!

I do have something I would like to share with all of you who bake spells:

Though I bake with careful attention to the herbs I use, (I have Miss Cat's herb and roots book); I found a neat little trick.

Get a medium sized jar, pour any time of baking sugar you would use; and in the jar add love herbs. Just like when you make vanilla sugar; you put sugar in a jar with some whole bean vanilla to make the sugar have the essence of vanilla. When I bake, I use the sugar that has the love herbs in the jar. The herbs lightly scent the sugar, and infuses the sugar with a powerful mixture.

This seems to get a more definite sign from the family when I use this sugar. Try it!

Also, anyone want to share a recipe?

hugs,
Brida

I use a mixture like this on my love candles. I use a bit of raw sugar and love herbs for love work on my candles. The sugar gives the herbs some kick. If I am doing anything with menstrual blood, I mix that with sugar too.

I use the fancy decorative red sugar in my love herb mixes and love candle dressings. I have green decorative sugar for money that I add when appropriate, too. :) It's so lovely because it adds a bit of a glitter effect and a nice punch of color!

Ever considered adding a Sugar Jar to a baking spell? The idea of a sugar jar is similar to the honey jar, but you use sugar instead of honey. Basically, take the ingredients/herbs you'll be adding to your baked good and toss them into a jar filled with sugar. Then take two popsickle sticks and write your names on each, use honey to place them face to face and bind them together with a string. Then stir your mixture with the popsickle stick while praying your petition over a course of several days, or do it every M, W, F for a week or so. Then add it to your baking. The stirring works the spell instead of using candles and I'm sure adding it to a baked good would be rather potent.

Conjureman!!! AWESOME suggestion! I am so going to do that as I bake his mother her birthday cake! WOO HOO!!!

Now, today a gift was given to me that I want to share with you all. I wish LM had something like this, and as I searched the website and the store bookshelf I did not find anything similar to it. A friend of mine who knows my passion in baking; hint my taking a loan just go to pastry school for the knowledge of it, and not to make a profession out of it. Well, she gave me a pagan cookbook. It talks about folk magic in there, and there so many recipes, with ingredients, and purposes as well. The history of some of theses dishes and desserts is also shared in the cookbook. I am really enjoying it, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a hoodoo cookbook?

The book is titled: "A Kitchen Witch's Cookbook" by Patricia Telesco

It really is a fun read, and has inspired me to make a conjure cookbook of my own. My own book of cooking shadows...lol!

Okay, off to make the sugar jar...Conjureman, I heart you!

I think I saw this around here somewhere..but I can't find it again. Maybe I'm in the wrong forum..I will be cooking for a few days for my boyfriend. Besides menses, what herbs ect can I add to the food that might have love properties? Cinnamon is one & I don't have my stash of herbs with me, but I beleive I had seen on my genetian root chips that it can be added to food..there has to be others? I would love to see what I can work into his food...

Cardamon, ginger, and Cinnamon are all great for inducing passion, add a bit of your menses with some small amount of powdered Queen Elizabeth Root. I believe Brida has a thread that discusses a lot of her ingredients in her love cooking. I believe Mary also contributed to that thread.

All the culinary herbs sold by Lucky Mojo are edible. Some herbs/spices used in baking love spells include: cinnamon, clove, ginger, vanilla. Think spice cake, gingerbread...or even Indian cuisine! Rosemary is great for giving a woman loving dominance over her fellow. Dittany of Crete can be added to food in small portions or steeped and added to teas. Look on the page referenced above for other herbs/spices you can add into your menu. Remember, while the botanicals themselves have power, it is your prayer and intent that brings forth the full potential within them. So plan your menu with your goal in mind. Assemble your ingredients and know what each represents. Take a nice love-drawing bath and pray for your success...passages from Songs of Solomon are nice, or just a heartfelt entreaty. When you're ready to start cooking, take a moment to "connect" with the ingredients and ask they fulfill their God-given purpose. Bake...Serve with love. :D

Good luck,

I'm in my targets house as of right now. I've been cooking..adding in what herbs I can along with my menses. Saying prayers over my food..I know he cares about me, but he's having issues from his divorce. I guess he finds it hard at times to have me around. Some days are really good & when it is, the bond between us is amazing. Are there any herbs that are edible that can invoke healing from past relationships?

Althaea is known for healing powers, including the psyche. Organic marshmallows would include althaea root or it could be worked into a tea in c/s leaf form. Borage is used for increasing courage; it has pretty blue star shaped flowers with a cucumber-like flavor. It is added to salads and garnishes teas, but is out of season for fresh use at present. Allspice is known to ease a troubled mind. Lemon grass helps clear out old conditions, and is a common ingredient in many Asian / Indian cuisines -- that, plus the allspice may be your best combination, as they can easily come together in a curry or stir fry type dish.

Healing work of this type needs to be ongoing in nature. The fixed meal is a start, but you may want to get a supply of skull candles and healing oil or the 7-11 Holy miracle spell kit to continue this work once you return home.

Good luck,

Michelle

Hi!

PM me, and I will give you a special recipe that will work like a charm; given your intentions are pure, and prayers are intense.

I have been "baking spells" for a while now, and I tell you...IT DOES WORK! The most important ingredient in ANY recipe is of course your prayers, and the ultimate icing on any cake or cookie is God's favour in answering your prayers.

I like to use AllSpice, Nutmeg, Cardomom (this is my favorite! A little goes a long way in cakes, and it adds a special scent to coffee cakes that people wonder what it is. It is really good!), Cinnamon, Lemongrass when I am making a lemon and poppy seed loaf so as to clear old conditions, and compell the person to succumb to my requests. I will tell you that if you flavor the sugar you use in your baking, it adds omph to it all.

Happy Baking!

I am referring to the $4.00 ones. are they tiny bags? Unless i didn't see where it says the Oz.

There is no set weight that they pack to. They pack as much of the herb as will fit into the bag easily, or with more expensive herbs as much as $4 will buy you.
There is always enough for you to do at least one spell with - usually enough for several. The baggies they use are around 5"x3". They don't pack it fat - stuffing it tight - but it will be enough to fill that bag.

I was reading HHRM which I just received and I have a question on the herbs. In some cases is it more potent to have fresh herbs compared to dried? I didn't see anything anywhere about this, if it is posted and I missed I am sorry.

Dried herbs have been much much more common in hoodoo since the urbanization of southern black people and today no-one bats and eye at dried herbs. Otherwise we'd all have to have herb gardens, lol. Granted I have a garden and I grow most of my own herbs these days, but you won't see a lack of power just because you used dried herbs.

Thanks - it good to know :)

I was just curious. I was planning on using the Lavender & roses under the bed for my marriage and I wondered if using the fresh roses was better than the dried ones.

I've never heard of it being used in rootwork, not every plant is. Ask the plant what it will do for you.

Wistaria (the proper spelling, as it was named after a botanist named Mr. Wistar) is not generally used as a plant, but Wistaria fragrance oil has some currency as being of use for luck, home-blessing, and business success. Its use dates back to the early 20th century.

If it is the same name that we use to describe a certain plant with a blue rain of flowers it is quite toxic.

Hello every one! I'm new to the board and had a question. I found an earlier/similar post but it didn't answer what exactly I was looking for. Any input would be appreciated!

I have a small garden space and wanted to plant herbs/plants that would be called for commonly. Is there is a list of traditional magical garden plants where could I find it? Any recommendations?

My ideal would be to grow this summer and dry what i didn't use etc. I just don't know the kinds of things people want to keep on hand.

I'm a bit away from studying full time at this point. I'm reading a bunch and learning a lot but its time to put together a garden and i figure maybe by the time I've picked up a few things it'll all be grown. I live in Washington state btw, but i can grow just about anything.

Thank you!

Buy a copy of my book "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic."

BOO-GRI-HHHC Hoodoo Herb & Root Magic, Hardcover by cat yronwode $42.00

BOO-GRI-HHSC Hoodoo Herb & Root Magic, Paperback by cat yronwode $18.00

There are 500 herbs and roots listed in this book. Check through the listings and see the magical uses of each herb and then determine whether that herb will grow in your climate and region. If it will, and it is appropriate for the kinds of conjure work you intend to practice, plant it and tend it, then harvest and dry it.

Good luck.

So wait, does that mean any Lucky Mojo brand Adam and Eve product (oil / candle / sachet / etc) doesn't contain the real herb? Is it just then crafted for the same effect / purpose?

Correct. We do not make our Adam and Even Oil with ILLEGAL and ENDANGERED SPECIES roots in them.

About 15 years ago, i stopped making Adam and Eve Oil at all, figuring that since i could not get the roots, no one would want the formula. However, there were a lot of protests from customers -- they liked the smell of the Oil -- its fragrance has never been related to the roots, which have almost no scent -- so i bought it back about 10 years ago, with selected love herbs in the oil, just because people liked that particular blend of love-drawing essential oils, even without the Adam and Eve orchid roots included. That is why, on the "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice" page about Adam and Eve spiritual supplies it clearly states, at the top of the page:

http://www.luckymojo.com/adamandeve.html

"Adam and Eve is a name for lovers almost as old as time itself. Originally based on the inclusion of a rare (and now endangered species) root, called "Eve and Adam Root," this traditional formula has been updated to make is ecologically safe, while still invoking the primal attraction of Creation's first and most Divinely mated male and female."

and

"Like the rest of the Lucky Mojo line, these products contain genuine reputed love-drawing and nature-enhancing herbs and herbal essential oils, not synthetic fragrances. The ingredients in Adam and Eve carefully avoid inclusion of the endangered Eve an Adam orchid root, but do include careful botanical substitutions such as Balm of Gilead Buds, plus other herbs and essences. Lucky Mojo labels are adapted from vintage packaging as traditional as the ingredients themselves -- and what could be more traditional than a label derived from a paining by the 15th century artist Albrecht Durer?"

And on the Lucky Mojo Anointing Oils catalogue page at

http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatoils.html#hoodoo

it says of Adam and Eve Oil: "A primal scent compounded for love-drawing and finding one's perfect mate."

That is, we sell this as a scent-oil and do not misrepresent it as containing the endangered-species roots.

We are completely and proudly up-front and open about this and all you have to do is read our product literature to understand why we do not sell ecologically unsustainable botanical goods, why we do not sell botanical fakes, and why we do not falsely advertise our goods as containing endangered species products when they do not conatin them.
