Hello everyone,
Just adding a greeting. I am extremely new to hoodoo. I am hoping to find out more about the art. I have practiced other forms of magic without much luck. I am curious about hoodoo because so many people seem to believe it really works!

I am a Native American woman, an enrolled tribal member of a Wisconsin Indian Tribe. What intrigued me about hoodoo is (I am told) it has elements of Native American Spirituality/magic. Being Native American, I was immediately interested.

I have mainly read about and worked with new age/Wiccan forms of magic. I am not sure whether or not I have had success with it at all. I have never actually tried to place a spell on anyone because the main principle axiom of Wiccan belief is "harm none." I am a firm believer in the law of karma and in the Christian adage: "do onto others as you would have them do unto you." likewise, I am having some struggles with the idea of hoodoo love spells and tricks.

It would be nice to hear others opinions on the law of karma and/or the golden rule and how it applies where hoodoo is concerned.

If you want to learn about the history, theoretical principles, and practical aspects of hoodoo as it developed in America, this forum is NOT the place to start. Instead, start by reading the pages online from my book "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice," especially this introductory section, called "Hoodoo History":

As you will note from that material, the Law of Karma (a Hindu concept, which works through the principle of reincarnation) is not really part of hoodoo, which is primarily grounded in African, Native American, and European folk magic, as seen through the lens of Protestant Christianity. The "three-fold law of return" (the Wiccan equivalent of Hindu karma) is not part of the belief system of hoodoo either, because hoodoo developed long before and culturally far outside of Wicca.

If the use of prayer or magic to influence either events or the minds of others is not something you wish to do, you probably will not find the practice of hoodoo rootwork to your liking. If you find conjure premises, goals, and objectives irreconcilable with your personal spiritual beliefs, then you would best be advised to either study conjure as a curious outsider would, politely and respectfully, or to walk away from it altogether.

In other words, conjure exists as a body of American folk magic knowledge and practice, and whether you like it or not, it will remain the folk magic of a certain sector of the American populace.
