A while back I had my local bank special order a roll of the Sacajawea Gold
Dollar coins for me, it took less than a week. I like using these in workings
that call for coins, I like the "shiny/gold" color for attraction, and the
Native American/strong female image, and the comparative "rarity" of these
versus the more common coins. I think there were 25 in the roll so it was $25, no

Wow, this must be an Oregon thing. I live in a small

So you say, but remember that we have people here from many cultures and many nations. I'll bet that 20% of folks here have never heard that one.

That is an Anglo-Celtic rule, one of the many "right ways up" rules that Irish-Americans and British Americans inflict upon their magical works. See the intro to HHRM on European "restrictive" traits in magic. It reflect Germano-Brito-Celtic, but not necessarily hoodoo.

If you are looking for "proof" or "tests" as to the efficacy of magic, this is not the place to ask. I am not conducting a science experiment here. However, as a daily divination or form of fortune telling, "heads or tails" is very popular!

You are asking for things i cannot give you -- methods for dealing with cultural issues of restrictivenss (or "it must be just-so -- or else" ness) that i did not learn in hoodoo and have no reason to teach in hoodoo. You may work with these energies -- and these restrictions-- as you wish, but i cannot advise you -- if only because i am too near-sighted to ever see pennies on the ground. Under the rules you state, my husband, who is of Norwegian-English-Scottish-Irish descent and has very good eyesight, would pick up the "lucky" pennies and turn the others face up for the next person to find, as an act of charity.

Hello all,

I have recently been having a problem with a coin that I wanted to
incorporate as an element in a hand for a friend. My friend is in the
early stages of trying to achieve residency in Canada, and wanted
something that would help smooth the path.

I prepared a hand and a red and white (for the Canadian flag) bag for my
friend, and sent it to him with instructions on how to add a petition
paper and how to feed the mojo. I included Devil's shoestrings and
Sampson snake root sewn into a piece of black cotton with white thread,
as in the "Root Doctor's Hand" described at
http://www.luckymojo.com/mojo.html and added a tiny horseshoe charm, a
little plastic bat, and a 1945 Canadian penny (from a collection of
coins that used to be my grandmother's) for a lucky penny.

The penny has given me nothing but trouble. It seems to have misplaced
itself twice while I was making the hand, although both times I was sure
I had put it right on the same table where I was working, and both times
I found it on the table after turning the room upside down looking for
it. I chalked it up to my being under a lot of stress lately, and
therefore being forgetful. (Even though I didn't think I had genuinely
been forgetful, but it's always a possibility that one might space out.)

Finally I got it all together and packed up the hand and sent it to my
friend. But when my friend opened the bag to put in the petition paper,
the penny had gone AWOL yet again. I told him what to expect to see in
the bag, so he would know what things were. He e-mailed me to tell me
that the penny was nowhere to be seen.

Now, I *know* there were no holes in that bag! I sewed it myself with a
French seam, so the seam is actually folded back on itself and then
doubled. I sewed in a secure bidirectional drawstring, too, so it would
be easy to keep the bag tightly closed.

It is pretty clear that this penny has got something going on with it.
I have no idea what. But it is now obvious that this penny wants
nothing to do with the use to which I was trying to put it.

What do I do? Should I just tell my friend to proceed as normal with
the mojo bag, and forget about the penny? Should I start over again?
Should I tell my friend to add a lucky Canadian penny of his own? Is it
possible that the hand has been troubled or spoiled by the influence of
the penny? And, I guess, what do I do, or what do I tell my friend to
do, if the penny shows up again?

(Now that is a wild story -- and i believe you, because i too have had incidences of apports (things appearing) and also disappearing items around me. Lodestones have a way of disappearing from mojo hands as well. I would have the client find a lucky Canadian penny of his own -- because that penny was not interested! -- but i would also consider this a sign of delay and setback, and work to overcome that as well. --cat)

Four is a very unlucky number among those who speak Chinese, because the word for "four" sounds like the word for "death." Therefore, four face-down pennies may very well be set there to cause your money to run out if you have a Chinese enemy -- and the fifth coin, face up, would mean they want to watch you suffer.

Contrariwise, four is a sacred number among many Native Americans, and if the coins have eagles on the tail side, as some do, then four eagles would be lucky and protective.

Likewise, some Black Indians, such as Afro-Cherokees, place four Indian Head Cents (or Indian Nickels) face up under the mat to function as "scouts" or "lookouts" and to keep away the law.

I happen to know because I looked into it on a whim when I was contemplating the sustainability of non-natural materia in hoodoo. I mean, we're burying and flushing and leaving in crossroads all sorts of things! The Mercury Head Dime was minted from 1916-1945, with two or three mintmarks a year, so there were millions put into circulation. Unless you're interested in perfect specimens or rare mistakes, the silver dime is widely available for not much money. Lucky Mojo sells them for a few bucks, as would most coin shops.

I was reading about Mercury dimes on The "Lucky W" Amulet Archive and have a couple questions about the use and condition of the dimes.

Dimes are also used to counteract a curse in hoodoo practice. Typical recipes involve boiling a dime or the filings from its milled edges in water or milk and drinking the liquid to "kill" the effects of occult poisons such as graveyard dirt, goofer dust, rattlesnake eggs, or snake-shed dust.

Why filings from the milled edge of the dime --is the reason simply because that is the easiest or most logical place on the dime to obtain the tiny shavings? --or are there other reasons?

But what about putting them in your shoes or as a bracelet? As I stated earlier that the impression I got from my readings is that they are typically used for as a warning sign that you have been crossed, etc.

But that, in and of itself, is a form of protection. Alarm systems on cars and houses alert you to the presence of intruders so that you can defend yourself - they don't actually attack the robbers in any way. Being aware when someone has started to work against you is a very good life of defense, and hence a form of protection.

Well what do you mean by a job? There is a lot you can do with them, if its say on an anklet and it turns black or falls off no you do not have to throw it away, clean it, polish it, pray over it and set it back to work.

From what I read in LM and after speaking to a few hoodoo doers, and this is for the herbs and roots aspect of hoodoo, as long as the herbs are not rotten or decrepid in any way, still have their natural color and smell, do not smell spoiled then you can use them as long as you like. The general rule of thumb however is year for roots and herbs.

Silver filings from dimes are simple to explain, once you have a silver dime in your hand, and a metal file.

The dime is made with tiny ridges all around the edge. This is called "reeding."

Take the file and carefully scrape off the ridges until the dime has a more or less smooth edge, like a nickle or a penny.

These silver filings (and they must be from a silver dime, not a modern non-silver dime) can be used in a variety of spells. See my book HHRM for a number of silver dime spells, including freeing oneself of evil spirits by drinking milk in which you have boiled the silver filings.

Coin shops carry coins from every year. That is their business.

Make a friend who works as a cashier at a convenience store, and have them put you on speed dial. I wound up with a pile of 2 dollar bills, Mercury dimes, Indian Head pennies and Susan B. Anthony dollars this way that I put into my projects. I live along I-5 near the Canadian border... all you have to do is wait for the night before the 10th or the 25th (usual paycheck schedule) for the drunks and cigarette smokers to come in and cash their change bowls. You'll always come out with at least a few peculiar coins with this method.

I purchased a triple strength money drawing mojo bag. The instruction say to get a dime and a $2 bill in the year of my birthyear. My birthyear is 1986.

I found a dime in my coin jar with the year 1986. I cannot find any $2 bill with the year 1986. What I found for $2 bills in the internet mostly are 2003 and 1976. The only 1986 $2 bill I found was a Canadian currency.

I know that on the Lucky Mojo online store, it have mercury dimes and $2 US bills.

Does it matter if use the silver dime I got or do I have to get a mercury dime? It did not specific which metal I should use on the instruction I got.

If I order a $2 bill from the Lucky Mojo online store, can I specify that I need a 1986 $2 bill? Or it doesn't matter what year it is as long as it is from Lucky Mojo?
