The following link presents a circa 1901 outsider's take on the culture that gave rise to hoodoo; although there are many typographical errors in the document, it is interesting to read. Enjoy!

You're very welcome -- there's another forum thread titled "Link to Hoodoo Related Literature" that presents that same essay, less the typos, plus several others by assorted authors.
Searching out and reading early literature that discusses hoodoo (however erroneous or bigoted) is a great way to expand one's scope of knowledge about the tradition of our craft.
Enjoy,
Michelle

Re: NCarolina Hoodoo Archeology Artifacts Anthropology Documents
Just thought I'd share this interesting piece of local history.
When I was growing up in Rockingham, a popular NC rootworker lived about half an hour from me in the town of Maxton. Although she passed recently, her fame was enough that she was featured in several local papers before and after her death.
Rootworker spends 60 years curing spells, jinxes, and bad luck.

I remember Mrs. Sara Murphy & she did have an extremely well known reputation in Robeson Co. NC & the surrounding areas.
I've been told that her daughter took over the practice.

Tray,
I have been attempting to locate descendants of Murphy who might be interested in sharing some of their memories. Do you know how to contact her descendants? If so, please PM me.
I'm going to collect her graveyard dirt this weekend.

Hello,
WOW, when I read the name, I knew immediately who you all was talking about and it brung a huge smile to my face. Mrs. Murp was the true meaning of the words "The Truth".
I went to her several times on different occasions and she helped me out each time and the last time I went to her home, Louise (her daughter) told me that she had passed and I cried like a baby because Mrs. Murp (I called her this) told me to come back to see her and I didn't come back when she told me too, and now she is gone.
Whatever work she did for anyone, you would see your results within 9 days guaranteed. She is truly missed by many people.
P.S.
Obskultus, I'm going to PM you.

Re: NCarolina Hoodoo Archeology Artifacts Anthropology Documents
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the Rootworker Ms. Sara Murphy who lived in Maxton NC. I have had a few people i encountered in my corner of the state who have told me about her. I was told she was a powerful Roootworker who only worked good works and that she gave out jars that contained Epsom salts, Onions and Hot Peppers. Reading through the Baths section of the course i assume the jars contained baths and i was told a small portion of the bath was taken orally.
From what i heard she was considered the last great Rootworker of her line, she has passed on and nobody in her family has been able to take on her work.
Thanks and Blessings.

I live in Rockingham, about 30 minutes from her grave and I visit her every so often to collect graveyard dirt.
From what I understand there is someone in her family who still practices, but it's been awhile since I looked into this and I forget who it is.
If you do a search for her name in the Google news archives you'll find a few things.

Thanks so much, i think i may have to visit her family. I've been told where her house is and that someone still practices there.
Think i may pay Ms. Murphy's grave a visit, i wish i could have met her in life but at least i can buy some dirt from her. I live in Fayetteville NC and i hear about her works all the time. Hoping i can find out some stories and hopefully share them.

Hello - I live in the triangle area of North Carolina. I've been looking for an experienced rootworker and have had not success. I only wish I would have had an opportunity to meet Ms. Murphy. Is there anyone who has now taken over her work who is just as effective in the area? I am in dire need of assistance. Thank you for your help!

Hello, Terilyn,
I am not sure who lives around there.
But, our AIRR members do indeed give magical coaching (if you're looking for a mentor). And they also perform spells).
You might even want to check out their areas. Maybe someone does live near you

Take care

Re: NCarolina Hoodoo Archeology Artifacts Anthropology Documents
Sara Murphy was my adoptive grandmother (her and my maternal grandmother were born on the same day). I remember her letting me play with her old deck of cards when I was about 13 or so, she had a old desk as her work station in the back of her house. her clients always went through the car port into her waiting room me and mother however always went through the main door on the left side cutting through the kitchen and dining room. I always saw mason jars filled with 50 cent pieces and Epsom salt and other herbs on my way to her work room.
We always went to her mainly because my mom always had root thrown at her from either family members, enemies, or people just wanting to see her do poorly in life, but "mama" (what my mother called Sara) always fixed and sent it back to whoever's doorstep by the time we got back to Fayetteville, NC.
Some of you reading this may have questions about what all she did in her workings and to be honest i couldn't tell you. She would try to teach me but at the time i had no idea what any of it was. I just knew my mother would go visit Sara when her spirit told her she needed to go see her. The thing about Sara is she would always tell people she'll take whatever someone put on you off or she'll open the doors for you for a job or whatever else was needed, but she won't do any hexing on anyone else and if they wanted that they need to go on and find someone else.
I been to Greensboro and seen "T" but I don't think she works anymore. She was gonna give a number to someone she knew that does work but he only does it if he wants to.
I've tried doing the work myself sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. For me, normally it doesn't unless It's in dire straits.
My question to any of yall is do you know anyone in the SC/NC that does work like mama or close to it? I need help, because I got people throwing stuff left and right at my mother and to be honest I want that stuff to stop like right now.

Re: NCarolina Hoodoo Archeology Artifacts Anthropology Documents
I will say that the practice is still common among the Lumbee Indians and many black Americans in rural, South-Eastern NC. But my black students have nothing positive to say about "roots" -- it's all the devil's work so far as they're concerned; messages they get in church. A few of them claim to have a family member killed by "roots" -- so either there's a disproportionate amount of negative work in the area, or they've just never heard of the positive side.
They don't go to root doctors to have "roots" lifted, they seek deliverance at church from gifted pastors, ministers, and bishops who can lift a "root".
This is all based on a discussion in class the other day.

Re: NCarolina Hoodoo Archeology Artifacts Anthropology Documents
Hello,
Nowadays most root doctors work long-distance as well as in person. Some will even set you up with Zoom or Skype calls, during this time of the pandemic.
I picked the following text up from another thread and I am reposting it here, in the hope that it will be useful to you:
The Association of Independent Readers and Rootworers (AIRR) and Hoodoo Psychics (HP) are both directories for locating excellent and ethical workers. You can get an instant phone reading at HP or you can set up a somewhat less expensive pre-scheduled reading through AIRR. Then, if rootwork is prescribed, your reader will either contract with you to do the work or will recommend someone who can do it, and some root doctors will actually teach you how to do the work yourself, like a DIY cooking class.
Start with these two sites and look them over:
The Association of Independent Readers and Rootworkers (AIRR)
http://readersandrootworkers.org/wiki/A ... ootworkers

Hoodoo Psychics at 1-888-4-HOODOO (HP)
http://hoodoopsychics.com

There are two pages at the AIRR site that are also very helpful if you are looking for a reputable root doctor:
Suggestions For Clients

Questions to Ask Your Reader, Rootworker, or Conjure Doctor
