Rita R introduction

Unread post by RitaR » Fri Jan 15, 2010 10:17 pm

Hello I just wanted to quickly introduce myself, my name is Rita and I have been reading and studying Hoodoo for about three years now. I am the great granddaughter of Dr. James (Jimmie) Spurgeon Jordan of Como North Carolina. I am happy to see that there is a forum where people can meet and discuss different topics. I hope to be chatting with people soon.

:)

Hello faith2008 I currently live in Ca. my family is from Como and Ahoskie, what part of N.C do you live in? I have not been back since my grandmother's death (2001).

James (Jimmy) Jordan or Dr. Jimmy Jordan was a noted conjure doctor in the area. My grandmother was his daughter by my Great Grandmother Mita R. (They were never married). My grandmother had one son James R (boot) and I am his only daughter

My mother always told me that my dad grandfather was this very powerful Hoodoo man in N.C (which may explain my interest in Hoodoo). So when she passed I was given all her records and found out yes in fact her father was James Spurgeon Jordan. My father who passed when I was ten talked of his grandfather often. My great grandfather died a few years before I was born. I was always asked if I knew who my Great Grandfather was by people in N.C when I went to visit but at that time I was young and did not take interest in who he was. When my grandmother passed he was also acknowledge as her father, apparently even being concieved out of wedlock it was common knowledge that she was his daughter. It is funny how deep genetics are because when looking at a picture of my great grandfather the resemblance between him and I are incrediable.

I am so happy that I have found this forum and the luck mojo site. I have ordered a few things from the site and found it very useful in my works.

Hi Rita. I'm on the south end of WNC. I live in a small town called Mill Spring. It's about 45 minutes south of Asheville.

I am a realitive looking for information on Mr. James Jordan. Many years ago someone came to NC and a book was written about Jimmy Jordan. When my cousin died in New York (James Van or as we called him JayVan Jordan) his wife in some way did not have the book. I wanted to buy the book or locate the book would anyone be aware of this book. The book was written and would have an isbn number but I had hoped someone would have that book of know of it. It was funny because as I looked at the post everything came back to me about how famous he was . As a young boy my father use to work for him and drive . Many of the older people have passed and the history seems lost in some way. I have heard of many stories about this man some unbelieveable but all confirm these accounts of him. This book would have so many pictures of people that I knew as a young child when I was staying with my grandmother and father until I moved to live with my parents. So if anyone can be of help on this book title it would be great. This book is more like a biography and would only serve to give this information only.

Hello

Are you speaking of the book that was written about my great grandfather? If so the title of the book is "The Fabled Doctor Jim Jordan, A Story of Conjure" By F. Roy Johnson. The book can be purchased at the city of como history site. Who was your family member that work for my great grandfather. Maybe I have heard of them. My grandmother was his daughter was Laura Vaughn (Maiden name R), she passed in 2001.

Hello to both of you. I am proud and happy to have descendents of "The Fabled Doctor Jim Jordan" on this site! That book by F. Roy Johnson taught me a lot when i first read it, many years ago, back in the 1960s. In the course i teach on hoodoo, i quote quite a gew passages from the book, mostly in an effort to get people who think of conjure as some sort of ooky-spooky-witchy-poo thing to understand how respected Dr, Jordan was in his community -- a man of dignity, influence, and also a man of great energy and charisma. In addition, his story tells us a lot about the way that Africans and Native Americans shared their herb lore, because he was of that mixed heritage, and his magical herb usage, as recounted in the book, is quite similar to native American hebr lore of the Cherokees and other tribes of that area.

I would love to see you post pictures here! They have to be online somehwere first (you cannot email them to this forum) but once you have them online (like at photobucket or your home page, or wherever), then, if the word URL represents the full URL of the online picture, all you have to do is put in the following code:

[img]URL[/img]

That's all it takes.

So, once again, welcome, and please, if you want to dicuss putting up a tribute site to Dr. Jim Jordan on the web and you need my help, just call me at the shop and i will do what i can to help. You come from a famous rootwork family!
