In terms of parrot feathers do would Parakeet or cockatiel feathers work since they technically fall under the same family as a parrot or are only more 'traditionally' considered parrot feathers need Like ones from Macaws?

Re: Herbs and Roots LMCCo Doesn't Carry: Questions and Answers
(If this is a duplicate question, please chalk it up to my being new!) Having grown up in Oregon, I stumbled upon pinedrops (Pterospora andromedea) a couple of times in my youth. I was told not to pick them because they were very rare, but that old folk magic indicated that they could be used to locate and find treasure. I now live in northern Maryland near some woods that are mostly beech and oak trees. I found a host of beechdrops (Epifagus virginiana) yesterday, and since they are a similar parasitic plant, I wondered if there were recipes or spells in the hoodoo or Native American traditions that use beechdrops? They don't seem to be rare, so I am thinking that carefully wildcrafting a few stems would be okay.
I think there is one other similar parasitic plant in the U.S. like these that is known as Indian pipe, or ghost plant, or fairy smoke, and I may be getting these confused.
I leave it to the forum's great wisdom. Any advice? Thanks SO much!
Marianne

This is a forum for advice on how to use Lucky Mojo products so unfortunately we can't advise on how to use items obtained elsewhere.
Thanks.

Hi MarianneS,
Welcome to the forum!
If you haven't already done so (and assuming you wish to), please introduce yourself in the Introductions thread.
This forum is for help and advice on using Lucky Mojo products, so unfortunately we won't be able to advise on the use of items obtained elsewhere. But it's very interesting that you have managed to wildcraft some promising items in the wild, and I wish you luck in finding a good use for them.

Re: Herbs and Roots LMCCo Doesn't Carry: Questions and Answers
Just to follow-through on my question: I did find reference to beechdrops and treasure finding in Cat's "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic," pages 99-101! It is listed under Gall of the Earth and several substitutes (which are carried by Lucky Mojo) are listed there. My area, which is heavily wooded with beech and oak trees, seems to be lousy with beechdrops, but considering how they grow, they could be easily decimated if over harvested. I just wildcrafted a few stalks. They certainly seem to work!

Hello everyone
I have been looking everywhere for a live plant of Devil's Bit and I haven't had much luck. But I recently found a nursery with a plant that resembles Devil's Bit a lot. The only information I can get for the plant is a label that says " #1 perennial Scabiosa". I would like to know if this plant is indeed Devil's Bit??
Thank you!

If you had a copy of my handy book, "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic," you'd have the answer to that! LOL!
Yes, Scabious is Devil's Bit.
Buy the book -- it's worth it.

I recently used saffron in a spell, and it had me wondering why Lucky Mojo doesn't carry it. I searched the entire board index (including this thread), but I could only find FIVE mentions of it! On the entire board! To me, saffron is such a luxurious herb. It always conjures up images of indolent courtesans and inmeasurable wealth. I came to the forums hoping to see if there was any more information on this herb, but I found none.

Hi BeautifulWitch,
Saffron has a long tradition in European love spells. You could add it to your spells or cooking for love or sexuality.
Here is Lucky Mojo's wonderful page on cooking with magical herbs:
http://www.luckymojo.com/conjurecookoffherblist.html
I hope this helps. Good luck.

Re: Herbs and Roots LMCCo Doesn't Carry: Questions and Answers
Hi BeautifulWitch,--
We use Saffron in our spell work and in some of the oils we make but we do not sell it in the shop because it is very expensive and that makes it too labour-intensive to count out a proper amount to sell.
Moonlightdream --
The question of whether an herb "can" be "used in hoodoo" is a blind alley.
Is St John's Wort used in hoodoo?
Nope, apparently not. Historically speaking there are no references to St John's Wort in hoodoo. This does not mean that nobody has ever used it, but if they did, they did not teach its use orally nor was its use recorded in text.
Can St John's Wort be used in hoodoo?
You might "borrow" its usage from some other culture's usage, i suppose. But, why?
For what would St John's Wort be used in hoodoo?
I have no idea, since i have never heard of it being used in hoodoo.
By the way, i grow St. John's Wort in my garden ... it's a pretty plant and very hardy.

Re: Herbs and Roots LMCCo Doesn't Carry: Questions and Answers
Hello, my daughter is working on a love box and she was following someone [online] who said to use cotton for the love box.
I own the Hoodoo Herb & Root Magic book and I was looking to see what the properties were for cotton. I know in our traditional Santeria we use cotton for several rituals and cleansings but I didn't know how it was used in hoodoo.
Since I use Catherine's book for herb guidance in a lot of my work, I didn't see cotton in the book.
So, my question to you all...is cotton good for love spell?
Can someone give me some feedback on this, please.

Re: Herbs and Roots LMCCo Doesn't Carry: Questions and Answers
Hello, oniomiladed -- and welcome to the Lucky Mojo Forum.
The person your daughter was following online [whose name i deliberately removed from your post] is a pretty well-known fraud. She pretends to set lights for people but hires others to do the work for a cut of the price. She has been caught sending multiple people the exact same photos of work she claims she is doing personally for each one.
Now, even a fraud could transmit good information, if she had a good source, and this person does have good sources -- but, like many who simply do not respect Black American culture, she mixes in, without explaining why -- things she finds from African Diasporic religions, such as Haitian Vodoun, Cuban Santeria / Lukumi / Ifa, Dominican Sanse, and Cuban Palo. These are all lovely ways of working, but they are not hoodoo ways of working. They have no standing in the Black American community, and were never documented by Black (or White) American folklorists from the 19th century to the present.
Again, there is nothing inherently WRONG with these ways of working -- no more than it would be wrong to venerate a Native American deity or a Hindu deity, or to recite the Surahs of the Quran -- but to call it "hoodoo" is an untruth.
Hoodoo does move and change. Like any culture, it grows by absorption and diminishes by attritition. But it takes a large community's inherent and implicit agreement to move or change a large body of folklore, and it takes TIME. She, an outsider who only recenty jumped into the tradition, and who does not give a good account of her honesty, as witnessed by the failings of her ethics noted above, does not have the weight to move the tradition to suit her notions.
She read a book on Santeria. Great. Now tell me what that has to do with the love spells of Greenwood, Mississippi. LOL!

On one episode of Lucky Mojo Rootwork Radio Hour, Dr Kioni suggested adding snake skin to a love potion. I haven't been able to find snake skin locally, was wondering if snake oil is just as powerful? What is snake oil generally used for?

Hello WasupDude,
Snake sheds are traditionally using in crossing or cursing spells, and is a central ingredient in classic Goofer Dust. You can order them from Lucky Mojo here:
http://www.herbmagic.com/snake-sheds.html
Rattlesnake rattles can be included in a mojo bag for gambling luck.
You can read all about the use of snakes, snake oil and snake by-products here:

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Squill is a member of the lily family so, as a magical substitution for squill, you might use any lily flower member -- but you can also simply buy squill bulbs from any supplier of ornamental flowers.
Good luck.

Nope, Hibiscus makes a nice reddish tea, but it is not a traditional remedy in African-American folk magic.
By the way, you posted this in the thread on International Shipping. Please do not do that again. It takes us wasted time to split the post out and move it to a different sub-forum, and then merge it into the right thread.
Please abide by forum protocol.
Thanks!

Regarding using the cotton spell from online sources:
I too saw it and even was thinking (briefly) about paying for it to be done for me. But I had a strange feeling and decided not to.
Then I said ‘well I can do it myself!’. I did attempt it and I STILL have a strange feeling. I plan on disassembling it completely and starting a love work/sugar jar instead. Something about it just dodnt sot right with me and I cant explain it.
Thank you Miss Cat for your wisdom!
All this being said— since the petition I used in the jar has a personal concern, would I be able to use it for the new working. Or is it better to just dispose of everything?
TY all!!
