Braucher,

If the plants and trees are next to a grave, I would ask the spirit who is there if you can harvest some. If the answer is yes, then you should think about leaving a payment such as 3 coins. Some people also believe in working with the caretaker spirit. This is a spirit who takes care of the graveyard and the residents. You may want to offer payment to them as well. There are precautions that come with graveyards. Like in order to avoid bringing home an unwelcome guest, you should cross a stream or river to prevent them from following you. Some people believe you should take a different way home in order to confuse the spirits. I would read up on these traditions a bit before taking items. Otherwise, it sounds like a good idea! No, I don't believe it would change the plant material in any negative way.

This page is about graveyard dirt but it also talks about payments that can be made: https://www.luckymojo.com/graveyarddirt.html

Hi hope everyone is well and staying safe. I have a simple question. Is there a major difference between thyme and lemon thyme, or say garden sage and white sage? Also would lemon thyme be like combining lemon and thyme? I know in times of need you have to use what you got, but is it as potent?

Thanks in advance :D

Evette Claudio --

Good question. Both Thyme and Sage are members of the large mint family. This family, which also includes Basil, Rosemary, and so forth, is noted for producing a wide variety of aromas, mostly as part of their interactions with insects.

In the production of these fragrances, the members of this family produce an array of chemicals that resemble the signature scents of other plants. Thus we have Lemon Thyme, Orange Thyme, Lemon Mint, Apple Mint, Pineapple Mint, Chocolate Mint, Peppermint, and more. These are not crosses between the Thyme or Mint and the other named plant, simple variant types of Thyme or Mint.

Now, as for Sage, we have a different problem -- real Sage, also called Garden Sage, is in the Mint family, as noted. But "White Sage" is also a name applied to an entirely different plant, one of the Artemisias. So you need to find out what the user, grower, or seller is referring to when naming a plant "White sage."

I've a question, preferably for Miss Cat because I vaguely recall a comment she made on it but other thoughts are welcomed and received with open arms!

Regarding Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs: Ii recall Ms Cat saying something to the effect of it being a valuable resource.

Initially, when I first purchased this book some years ago I'd expected to see more of a correlation between the herbs and their magical uses in Conjure - as I wasn't really interested in other systems at the time - but I was disappointed after noticing that almost none of the entries seemed to correspond to their magical uses in the Hoodoo.

As I look through it now though, with a more open mind and more curious about other systems I have come to love and value the book. I definitely agree that it's a great resource for a practitioner of any path to have but I'm wondering if it's just that: a source of reference or information on other magical systems or for the practice of other those systems/traditions rather than being particularly useful to the rootworker. Or is there some overlap or "wiggle room "?

What are your thoughts?

Hello Dr Darensbourg,

I have moved your post to the topic on general herb and root magic, as you posted in the topic on herbs grouped specifically by purpose or use.

Scott Cunningham’s book is indeed a beneficial resource for learning about herbs and their use in spellwork. In his case, he leans toward their use in European and Euro-American spiritual traditions. This is similar to how miss cat’s Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic acknowledges the properties of herbs and roots in the hoodoo tradition. There are also many encyclopedias available on the medicinal use of herbs, as another example.

You will find that there is indeed a lot of overlap among those ways of working with herbs, as well as many distinctions to be found.

As a rootworker, I’ve used Cunningham’s book as another reference guide, as that is really the intent behind his writing. His and these other books all inform my understanding of the spiritual properties of herbs and roots and how I may apply them in my work for clients. When their use is contradicted, I personally defer to miss cat’s writing as I generally work in the hoodoo tradition. However, when I do work in the Mediterranean spiritual tradition, I rely on that system’s understanding of herbal properties. Neither one is better than the other, they are simply different.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Dr Darensbourg,

Scott Cunningham was a practitioner of Wicca and somewhat of a classicist as well. His ascriptions for the magial uses of herbs are in the European witchcraft tradition, as Miss Athena rightly noted, but that does not render them useless to a conjure worker. Some of the ascriptions do overlap and some do not, and the lists of herbs also differ. I wrote my book as an intended complement to his, not in opposition to it.

Hello Vibe77,

Yes black pepper is traditionally used in break up, cursing, and crossing work specifically to drive someone away. You can read more here: http://www.herbmagic.com/pepper-black.html

Ok so last month i gift my cousin in law a few sacs with herbs in them, along with money dressing oil and money powder which i made.

I didnt have all the ingredients that was suggested to make the oil and powder but i looked up and read about the items i needed and found suitable substitutes for them.

I picked random herbs for the sacs. no one told me to pick these certain herbs.

Plus i used candles and incense to help with the intent to make it more powerful.

Now, i do believe in what i did and my workings. Ive always felt that ive had an inner power and was never sure if it was true or not.

Now my questions:

1) Did i put the herbs for love, protection, and help manifest positive dreams for prosperity in the wrong sac bags?

2) They were in mesh colored bags. Was that wrong?

3) Is there a wrong or right sac or bags i should use for such items, or should i use glass bottles?

4) Ive made teas and herb glass bottles to help contacting spirits while i sleep, but not sure if i did it right. i dont doubt anything that i have done thus far. i just want to make sure my deliverence is correct.

If anyone can help i would really appreciate it

Hello, all.

At what point are dried herbs, animal curios or minerals too old to be effective for use in hoodoo?

Sincerely,

Rapacia
