Dowsing Bibliography and Book Suggestions for Beginners

Unread post by catherineyronwode » Wed Feb 20, 2019 5:57 pm

Back in 2010 i placed this Dowsing Bibliography online through the Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology (YIPPIE):

Books About Divining Rods,
Dowsing, Doodlebugging, Water Witching.
Rhabdomancy, Radiesthesia, Radionics,
and Pendulum Divination

compiled by catherine yronwode

Today i updated the page and thought to come here to the Lucky Mojo Forum to tell folks about the new listings -- but when i got here, i realized that i had never posted about it here in the first place! Well, only NINE YEARS LATER -- here is the URL:

http://www.yronwode.org/dowsing-divinin ... raphy.html

And, in answer to those who want a list of more recent titles on dowsing, all i can say is, "Be patient. Maybe by the year 2020 i will bring the list up to date ... to the year 2000." LOL!

UPDATED in 2020 as promised! -- cat

AND UPDATED AGAIN in 2025 as a Patreon page, to be revealed to the public in 2026!

“The Divining Rod” by John Mullins and Sons, 1893; Mullins, (Colerne, Box, Wiltshire), 1893; 1894. Small octavo. viii + 64 pages. Original red cloth lettered in gilt on front board, blind borders. Black-and-white frontis-portraits of John Mullins and his son Joseph Mullins on endpapers and several black and white photos. Published under the patronage of the "War Office Authorities" and the "Crown Land Commissioners." Includes a biographical sketch of the author and noted water-diviner John Mullins, collected letters on the subject, and short essays describing successful water dowsing for his patrons, whose names occupy a four-page listing that begins with dukes, proceeds to lords, and then goes on to encompass the lesser nobility, a series of wealthy "esquires," and finally concludes with a rather lengthy series of breweries, which, of course, need extensive and bountiful sources of pure, fresh water. A lovely, practical, and rare book on water-dowsing from my personal collection.

Huge score! I just lucked into a trove of 122 issues of the American Dowser Quarterly Digest from 1984 - 2018. I can hardly believe it! These all come from one person's estate. I already have copies of the American Society of Dowsers Quarterlies reaching back into the 1970s and on to the sad date that this once-wonderful magazine "went digital" for members only -- and lost its paper footprint, and thus the ability to affect the world at large.

Due to the flood of the town of Guerneville and the complete loss of my own earlier collection, my coverage of the 1980s era of the ASD is spotty, as i bought single copies one at a time on eBay. When this amazing collection arrives, i will make comparisons, copy-by-copy, in order to high-grade my collection -- which will leave me with DOZENS OF DUPLICATE COPIES from 1984 - 2018 that are filled with incredible information on dowsing, pendulum reading, geopathic stress, and aura reading.

I will NOT be selling my duplicate copies. I will distribute them FOR FREE among my beloved Patreon subscribers who are at the Bibliophile tier or higher. See https://patreon.com/catherineyronwode for details.

Paper forever! And may the ASD reconsider their "money-saving" decision to kill the Quarterly Digest, and may they return the Digest to print form soon. We miss it so much!

Jenkins, E. Vaughan [as by "The Proprietors of "Water”]. Water Divining, Reprinted from “Water,” A Journal for Water Supply, Irrigation, Sewage Works, Hydraulic Machinery, Lifts, Pumps, Water Softeners, Filtration, Docks, Canals, &c., &c. London: The Proprietors of "Water", n.d. (circa 1902). Small octavo hardcover. 154 pages + viii pages of ads, with 37 illustrations, including a frontis-portrait of E. Vaughan Jenkins.

Here we have a collection of essays on the subject of water divining previously published in "Water, a Journal for Water Supply, Irrigation, Sewage Works, Hydraulic Machinery, Lifts, Pumps, Water Softeners, Filtration, Docks, Canals, &c., &c." The text is accompanied by reviews, black and white illustrations and priceless photos of Victorian-era dowsers (men, women, and children), plus advertisements for related services.

A time-capsule of British dowsing history, it is as charming as it is astonishing. Many of the dowsers showcased here were also well-drillers, and a common phrase found in their ads is "No Water No Pay." My favourite photo and caption is of a bearded man in a black suit with a bowler hat, standing with his back to an ivy-covered brick wall, with a small Y-rod in his hand, pointing down, and the caption, "Fig. 23 - Mr. John Stears in the Act of Divining."

Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

Image

"The Dowsing Bibliography at YIPPIE" was first put online in 2010, then thoroughly updated in 2020. Now, after five years of dormancy, it has sprung back to life with a dozen new entries and almost two dozen new graphics, plus much additional information about the books already listed. As a Life Member of the American Society of Dowsers, it is my pleasure to keep my friends and colleagues up-to-date on the literature of dowsing with personal reviews and glam cover shots of everything from my own collection of ultra-rare 19th and 20th century dowsing books to the cutest new dowsing-for-interior-decorators self-published wonder. This is the first time my Patrons have supported the Dowsing series hosted at the Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology, and for their financial assistance, they each receive a one-year Patreon exclusive link to the New! Improved! More Colourful! Dowsing Bibliography -- which will open to the public in 2026.

[PATRONS GET THE SECRET URL IN EMAIL ONE YEAR BEFORE IT OPENS TO THE PUBLIC]

Don't worry, though, all you non-Patron Dowsers -- the 2020 edition of the Dowsing Bibliography is still online at the YIPPIE web site, along with all our other public bibliographies on occult and spiritual topics, at http://yronwode.org

This week i am making a second sweep (well, actually a fourth sweep) through "The Dowsing Bibliography at YIPPIE." This labour of love was first put online in 2010, then thoroughly updated in 2020. Last week, after five years of dormancy, i brought it back to life with a dozen new entries and almost two dozen new graphics, and this week i am enlarging it one more time, with new books, new cover art, and much additional information about the books and the authors already listed. As a Life Member of the American Society of Dowsers, it is my pleasure to keep my friends and colleagues up-to-date on the literature of dowsing with personal reviews, commentary, and clean cover shots of my own collection -- from ultra-rare 19th and 20th century dowsing books and pamphlets to the cutest new dowsing-for-interior-decorators self-published wonder. This is the second time my Patrons have supported the Dowsing series hosted at the Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology, and for their financial assistance, they each receive a one-year Patreon exclusive link to the New! Improved! More Colourful! Dowsing Bibliography -- which will open to the public in 2026.

Third time's a charm! This is my third update of "The Dowsing Bibliography at YIPPIE" this year, and it will not be the last. I am STOKED on this project and find it difficult to set aside. The first pass was put online in 2010, and it was thoroughly updated in 2020. Last month after five years of dormancy, i brought it back to life with a dozen new entries and almost two dozen new graphics, and earlier this month i added more new books, new cover art, and new information about the books and the authors already listed. But now the train has left the yard and we are getting up to speed! Stick your head out the window, watch the drivers roll. I have got some raries for you this time, and you are gonna love 'em! As a Life Member of the American Society of Dowsers, i am thrilled to bring you personal reviews, commentary, and clean cover shots of my own collection -- from ultra-rare 19th and 20th century dowsing books and pamphlets to the latest new self-published woo-woo wonder. This is the third time my Patrons have supported the Dowsing series hosted at the Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology, and for their financial assistance, they each receive a one-year Patreon exclusive link to the New! Improved! More Colourful! Dowsing Bibliography -- which will open to the public in 2026.

We found this gem while compiling the Dowsing Bibliography at YIPPIE. It's from the 1967 book "Magnet Dowsing or the Magnet Study of Life" by Benoytosh Bhattacharyya, in the chapter on the Ayurvedic dowsing of medicine:

"The left hand carries the magnet to magnetise the body and mind of the operator. The photograph of the patient is placed on the centre of the semi-circle or rather its base line. The stage is now set for dowsing the correct medicine with which the patient is in harmony. With the right hand a circular and gentle rotatory movement is given to the magnet pointer and soon it begins to move by its own motion. As it moves slowly from one point to another, the movement of the pendule should be watched with care. Later the movement of the magnet becomes constant and points to one or another of the five bottles placed before it in a semi-circle. The experiment should be repeated at least ten times before a decision can be taken."

Check out our freshly made spiritual oils, incense, perfumes, floor washes, and sachet powders, plus the widest selection of magical herbs and roots under one roof. Our entire catalogue is online at luckymojo.com/catalogue — and we sell by mail order, too, both retail and wholesale. (Art by Benoytosh Bhattacharyya.)

And the hits just keep on happening! This is my fourth update of "The Dowsing Bibliography at YIPPIE" this year, and it will not be the last. I am deep, deep into this project and there is so much more dowsing history to discover, uncover, and recover. The first pass was put online in 2010, and it was thoroughly updated in 2020. In February, after five years of dormancy, i got back to work on it, and since then i have been adding new books, new cover art, and new information about the books and the authors already listed. This week i am showcasing some oldies and introducing some recent titles. As a Life Member of the American Society of Dowsers, it is my pleasure to bring you personal reviews, commentary, and clean cover shots from my own collection -- including the most ultra-rare 19th and 20th century dowsing books and pamphlets and the most useless self-published paper-wasters of the past decade. This is the fourth time my Patrons have supported the Dowsing series hosted at the Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology, and for their financial assistance, they each receive a one-year Patreon exclusive link to the New! Improved! More Colourful! Dowsing Bibliography -- which will open to the public in 2026.
