Mystics, Mages, and Magical Places 03/06/2023:
The second episode of Mystics, Mages, and Magical Places with Reverend Art and guest Miss Beth, bringing you "Tarot for Shadow Work!"
Mystics, Mages, and Magical Places will be on the air at 4pm PT, 7pm ET with Reverend Art and special guest Miss Beth! We begin this show with an interview of our guest followed by a discussion of the use of Tarot as a tool for shadow work.
So, what is shadow work exactly?
Shadow work is working with your unconscious mind to uncover the parts of yourself that you repress and hide from yourself, what many might refer to as their "dark side." This can include trauma or parts of your personality that you subconsciously consider undesirable. Anyone can do shadow work on their own. The goal of shadow work is to bring about integration of the unconscious leading to complete and total awareness. Through shadow work you can gain more confidence and self-esteem, improve your creativity, build better relationships with others, discover your hidden talents, have better clarity, and more!

2023-03-06 16:18 jaydeehoodoo The Tarot Tool of your choice reminds me of the Hoodoo Heritage Festival goody box, learn as you do with the presenter!
2023-03-06 16:19 trollt Does the Shadow Work being discussed relate to Jungian Psychology and notions of The Shadow side of personality? How is that done?
2023-03-06 16:19 trollt Is it related to the Journey of the Fool that is often described in relation to the Tarot trumps?
2023-03-06 16:19 jaydeehoodoo question for the presenter, What advice would you give to a new person to select a tarot deck, is there a methodology that you do when selecting?
2023-03-06 16:22 trollt I've understood some among Wiccans describe Shadow work as related to dark or dangerous gods, and amongst Thelemics like Falorio and Grant connecting it to demons or negative djinns or demons. Is Miss Elizabeth's process connected in some way to this?
2023-03-06 16:24 catherine-yronwode Yes, i too have this question. Is this Jungian shadow work (inner dark self), Wiccan shadow work (dark deities(, or Thelemic shadow work (demons and negative djinns)?
2023-03-06 16:25 trollt I think that's in the slide show: The Shadow Work Deck
2023-03-06 16:25 trollt Thank you for clarifying that.
2023-03-06 16:25 trollt What is the Shadow Work Deck?
2023-03-06 16:28 reverendjames Just to bring a bit of clarification on "Shadow work", per the show description - "Shadow work is working with your unconscious mind to uncover the parts of yourself that you repress and hide from yourself, what many might refer to as their "dark side." This can include trauma or parts of your personality that you subconsciously consider undesirable."
2023-03-06 16:34 trollt Movie mentioned: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind R 2004 ‧ Romance/Sci-fi
2023-03-06 16:36 reverendjames Notice she said "Practice makes progress" not "perfect". Thats healing in itself!
2023-03-06 16:39 trollt Is traditional therapy beneficial? What types are most beneficially aligned with Tarot and Shadow Work?
2023-03-06 16:41 trollt So this is primarily self-development as compared to prognostication or fortune telling with the use of Tarot.
2023-03-06 16:42 catherine-yronwode Are you using tarot images like thematic apperception test (TAT) images to uncover ideas within the images? Can you give an example? I am kinda lost about how to use tarot here...
2023-03-06 16:42 trollt Does it matter what deck one uses for it?
2023-03-06 16:43 catherine-yronwode Are the cards picked by sortilege, or is there a card-a-day approach?
2023-03-06 16:44 trollt What decks has Miss Elizabeth found most helpful to her self-development?
2023-03-06 16:45 reverendjames What is a "Spirit candle?"
2023-03-06 16:46 catherine-yronwode No calling the quarters or deities, but she lights a spirit candle.
2023-03-06 16:46 reverendjames Ahh ok, so kind of like a "guiding light" to draw them in to your space
2023-03-06 16:47 trollt Moon Mama, Ripe Avocado Witch
2023-03-06 16:48 trollt Tarot-mediated contemplative therapy, keen.
2023-03-06 16:48 reverendjames So don't expect to resolve something in one session, its a processes of digging until you "reach gold" so to speak
2023-03-06 16:49 catherine-yronwode She uses a tarot spread. She recommends googling spreads. I recommend the book "Classic Tarot Spreads" by Sandor Konraad. https://www.amazon.com/Classic-Tarot-Sp ... 0914918648
2023-03-06 16:49 trollt Is it 'reading' in a conventional sense? It seems more aligned to what is called 'pathworking' in esoteric Tarot usage.
2023-03-06 16:50 trollt Guided Tarot
2023-03-06 16:51 reverendjames Stefanie Caponi
2023-03-06 16:51 trollt Are spreads important?
2023-03-06 16:51 trollt Right, it all depends on the individual Tarot path.
2023-03-06 16:52 reverendjames She personally Shuffles (various styles), Pulling the first card off the top of the deck normally.
2023-03-06 16:53 catherine-yronwode She reads from the top, rather than by a cut method.
2023-03-06 16:53 catherine-yronwode Ah, it can also be a one-card draw.
2023-03-06 16:53 trollt So it doesn't seem to relate to any specific meanings for cards. It's a kind of dance with Tarot.
2023-03-06 16:54 reverendjames Using spreads is not mandatory but do what "speaks to you" in the moment. If you've seen a spread and feel it will be beneficial to you now, then follow your intuition.
2023-03-06 16:54 trollt And in tune with one's own preferences and tastes.
2023-03-06 16:54 trollt The Modern Witch Tarot
2023-03-06 16:54 reverendjames The Modern Witch Tarot by Lisa Sterle
2023-03-06 16:55 catherine-yronwode I suppose then that the Old Three Card Cut would also work -- it is not so much about the layout but about how you get insights from the cards received via sortilege.... i think.
2023-03-06 16:56 reverendjames Vitiligo
2023-03-06 16:56 trollt E.g. https://www.amazon.com/Modern-Witch-Tar ... 1454938684
2023-03-06 16:57 trollt Aecletic: https://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/m ... tch-tarot/
2023-03-06 16:57 catherine-yronwode Oracle decks as clarifiers for the tarot images.
2023-03-06 16:58 catherine-yronwode Ah, she uses reverses!
2023-03-06 16:58 trollt Thanks for mentioning that; i hadn't caught it.
2023-03-06 16:59 reverendjames So using these clarifiers is what the 3rd workshop on Tools for Tarot is about
2023-03-06 17:00 trollt Can one combine the therapy with fortune telling?
2023-03-06 17:00 trollt Right, personal preference will become paramount, i would guess.
2023-03-06 17:00 jaydeehoodoo Liz Dean has a great book on the Tarot, the Ultimate Guide to the Tarot: https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Guide-T ... 1592336574
2023-03-06 17:00 catherine-yronwode Oracle cards to reveal passive states, including passive states of resistance.
2023-03-06 17:01 trollt It is somewhat like TAT, or blots in some ways.
2023-03-06 17:01 trollt Mary K. Greer
2023-03-06 17:01 reverendjames @trollt do you mean Rorschach ink blots?
2023-03-06 17:01 catherine-yronwode She advocates reading reversals.
2023-03-06 17:02 trollt Does it matter to Miss Elizabeth whether the cards are selected randomly?
2023-03-06 17:03 trollt I.e. can you benefit from looking through the deck and 'making up' readings?
2023-03-06 17:03 trollt Reverend James, i meant that, yes.
2023-03-06 17:04 catherine-yronwode In my experience, those who do not read reversals come out of playing card reading and they pay great attention to adjacent cards, which is the older way of reading, especially before the Celtic Cross took precedence as a layout.
2023-03-06 17:04 trollt Can you go too deep? At some point is it imperative to have a guide or teacher?
2023-03-06 17:04 trollt Non-random
2023-03-06 17:04 trollt Looking at them.
2023-03-06 17:06 catherine-yronwode She says that if selecting a card derives from ego, it is not recommended.
2023-03-06 17:06 reverendjames Random is best if your familiar with the card meanings - to remove the ego and bias from the reading.
2023-03-06 17:07 reverendjames Similar to Lenormand-style of reading, using cards around other cards which will change the meaning.
2023-03-06 17:07 catherine-yronwode If you go too deep or hit a wall, back off, she says.
2023-03-06 17:08 trollt So this does not appear generally to intentionally engage with what are called demons; this is a psycho-spiritual delving.
2023-03-06 17:09 trollt Are there Master Shadow Workers who become coaches for others? Is there a reliable measure Miss Elizabeth has found for identifying these people if so?
2023-03-06 17:09 reverendjames 20 minutes remain in the show.
2023-03-06 17:13 californiasister thank you Miss Beth for what you are saying now
2023-03-06 17:13 reverendjames She suffers from PTSD from living with a narcissistic parent and has noticed major changes in these situations by doing shadow work. It has helped her be a better parent as well.
2023-03-06 17:14 reverendjames I second that @californiasister ! It shows great courage to share her experience and help others!
2023-03-06 17:15 californiasister Yes Rev James. I understand what she is stating. Similar journey for me.
2023-03-06 17:17 catherine-yronwode Yes, Reverend James, Lenormand cards are piquet or skat packs of 32 playing cards with added mnemonic images. Some recent Lenormand decks remove the playing card, but you can still find complete Lenormand decks. But this is where Lenormand readings picked up the adjacent card reading method -- from tic-tac-toe and grand tableau layouts.
2023-03-06 17:17 reverendjames @californiasister I hope tonights show has given you some ideas and tools for helping you on your journey, and we're glad you hear to listen and learn with us!
2023-03-06 17:17 trollt How might Shadow Work be integrated into a religious path? Is it more compatible with some than with others?
2023-03-06 17:20 trollt Wonderful insights, great show.
2023-03-06 17:20 trollt Angel HRU of the Tarot Deck , and others.
2023-03-06 17:22 trollt Grounding; base-level attention
2023-03-06 17:23 catherine-yronwode This was interesting to me -- an unexpected use for the tarot with which i was completely unfamiliar. Thanks very much for the insights.
