In 1925 he had with Vivian Mitchell of Thomasville, Georgia, his Informant #252, on ways to remove someone from a town by means of a fish or a river -- that is, putting their hair in the gill of a fish and throwing it back into the water, or placing their name or personal concerns in a bottle and setting it to float downstream.

2025-05-18 17:52 PM catherine yronwode In Hyatt's 1935 book, "Folklore from Adams County, Illinois" people of many ethnicities and cultures were interviewed. Entry #9479 relates a spell from an unnamed "Irish" (Irish American) informant: "If you want to get rid of your beau, take and put his sock on a railroad track, and when the train runs over the sock, he will travel the same way the sock went."
2025-05-18 17:52 PM catherine yronwode The word "beau" might indicate that the informant is a young woman, and she seems to be inexperienced when it comes to railroads or foot track magic, but her spell is unique and highly practical, so i am including it here with two clarifications of my own devising. First, it is not easy to understand whether by "a railroad track" the informant means one of the rails or the rail bed between the rails. I would prefer it to be a rail. Second, the directionality of the sock is not mentioned, but common sense and familiarity with this type of spell would seem to indicate that the toe of the sock should point in the direction that the beau is to go, and to make that sure, a train schedule should be consulted to determine when the next train going in that direction will pass through.
