MEMPHIS UNCROSSING BATH

To be under "crossed conditions" is to have a hex, jinx, or curse on you, to have been "thrown at," "rootworked," or had a "mess" placed on you. Uncrossing baths are prescribed to remove blocked and crossed conditions, restore good luck, and overcome enemy spells.

The following four-ingredient, five-day uncrossing bath comes from the same rootworker, Hyatt's Informant 1532, we encountered earlier, and it includes Hyatt's questions as well. This woman's work is an excellent example of down-home simplicity in Southern conjure, and it is similar to other uncrossing recipes Hyatt learned while in Memphis.

"There's another bath that I bathe. I'm telling you to take five baths in this, for five days. Now, this bath that I fix — now my best ingredient in this bath is soda [baking soda, sodium bicarbonate, a natural anti-bacterial deodorant]. And into this two tablespoons of soda I add two tablespoons of sugar, two of salt, and two of mustard powder, and that's all. Then you place this mixture in a small quantity of water, about four cups of water, let it be real warm, and then you take that and sponge your whole entire body with it, and then you rinse it off."

https://www.herbmagic.com/blessed-kosher-salt.html

("In all this bathing, according to your motions, you always bathe down?")

"Down, down, like you say. If you bathe yourself down, that sugar will sweeten your body. The salt is a saving ingredient, isn't it? That mustard is for sweating possession out of you, and that soda opens the pores and dries that stuff out. And regardless of whatever may be done, whatever, you'll sure be able to come free."

("You take this bath if anybody has put a spell on you and this bath draws it out?")

"It really will, yeah, it really will. And then it'll drive enemies away and make peace in the time of confusion. Then it'll help you to be successful, to go forth into the world and accomplish what you try to accomplish. You'll find there's nothing under the Sun no greater than those four little common things."

Thank you for this, Deacon Millet! Is there an associated psalm to pray while washing?

The Memphis root worker who taught this spell did so in a secular way, without a Psalm. If you wish to add one, you may choose one appropriate to your needs. Psalms 23 is "all-purpose."

A complete list of Psalms and their uses is found here, courtesy of AIRR, and once you get there, if you click the numbered Psalm's link, you will find the entire Psalm text and further details:

So 4 cups for 5 days means save a little bit each day for the last day?

eireguitar --

With a mixture of 2 tablespoons of each dry ingredient in 4 cups of water, you will have a bit over one quart of the prepared wash (because the dry ingredients will essentially dissolve in the water).

If you can make one quart last for 5 days, then that is good for you, but if i tried to make a quart of liquid body-wash last for 5 days, i would not have enough to sponge downward all over my body each day -- and on every day after the first day, the wash would be cold, not hot, as directed.

So my recommendation is to make and use one quart of the hot, fresh wash each day, as directed

This is a good one. Thanks for sharing. I love the old-timey labels and kitchen jars that date to the time when the spell was told.

Would this work for inadvertent crossings by people who don't realize what they are doing? Such as the evil eye? Others talking about you or your business out of envy and sending negative energy towards you that way?

Would you treat this one the same as other baths? Do it in the morning before sunrise and dispose of a small amount of the water afterwards?

Graveyardhag --

The informant did not give a time of day, but it is a common tradition in hoodoo to bathe at dawn.

Note that the instructions are to rinse off afterwards, not to air dry. This would make it not so important to dispose of the water in a ritual manner. However, if that is the way you or your family finish off your baths, then i would recommend you do what you were taught or how your ordinarily work.

Graveyardhag, Hyatt asked this worker if one could take such baths during the day.

She said, "No, at night. You don’t get anything much in the day. Every power from Satan or from God is at night. Jesus did all his work early in the morning, all of his work -- raising, everything -- before day."

So Miss Cat's advice is dead-on! :)

I have yellow mustard seed but only about three tablespoons full and have had a hard time finding the yellow seeds in large quantity.

1.) Can I used the black micro/mini mustard seeds and grind then up into a powder?

2.) Or can I use mustard seed oil? The bottle says Pooja pure mustard oil and it is a nice amber color. It doesn't say it is cut with any other oil.

3.) Four cups of water seems to be very little for one bath. I normally make/use 3 to 5 gallons of any "prepared bath" per bathing session so that would mean to increase the ingredients for such a larger quantity of water. Would that be correct or just make do with the 4 cups and sponge as best you can?

DrCalamusSweetflag --

Hi.

White / Yellow Mustard has a different meaning and use than Black / Brown mustard. This recipe does not call for Mustard Seed. It calls for Mustard Powder. You can go to the grocery store and buy Colman's prepared mustard powder -- the stuff that yellow hot dog mustard is made from! In a pinch, use yellow mustard!
