The 4 inch burn for less than 2 hours normally. Great for those who don't want to leave candles burning or have to work in secret.

Try searching through this entire thread. It gives great examples of how to start but the best petitions are the ones written from the heart

If it's big enough, write horizontally. Otherwise go vertically and write in a spiral.

Yes, you can burn 2 or more saint candles at the same time.

Re: Candles: How to Trim Carve Load Petition Pray Dress Arrange Light
Dear hello --
Reversing is not exactly "dark" work, because the person named gets back whatever they sent, including good.
If you chose a third candle that is not Jinx Killer, I would suggest that a Blessing Candle is one way to add the blessings you might want. That is, light three candles -- Uncrossing, Reversing, and Blessing -- in triangle form.
Or go with the earlier suggestion of Uncrossing, Reversing, and Jinx Killer.
Good luck.

Re: Candles: How to Trim Carve Load Petition Pray Dress Arrange Light
How do you determine whether to set your candles in a triangular shape or ... some other shape? And, do you need to choose a shape? (From my forays into any candle magic, I usually set them in a line, "left to right" like how we read.)
If you do a triangle one, is there a first, second, and third candle? Like...an order?

I set it in the triangular shape because it helps direct the energy. If you are doing it in the triangular shape I was taught to draw something you light things in a clockwise fashion. I Dont think there is a particular order though.

I am unable to properly answer these questions for you as every single worker is going to have a different answer for those!

Hi Miss Bri,Miss Bri wrote:Hi there,
Are you talking about the glass encased vigil lights?
If so, then I have been taught to use Ammonia to wipe them down, some folks will smudge them a little with sage or some other appropriate incense, some might even use a little their own urine.
take care,
Bri
What do you mean by smudging them with sage? Do you touch the candle with sage or burn the sage around the candle? How long would you burn it for, if that is the case? OR what do you apply the urine with?
Thanks!

You would burn some sage and then pass the candle through the smoke - a few passes through would be sufficient while praying that the candl ebe cleansed.
If you wanted to wipe it down with urine, you'd just slightly dampen a cloth with it, and rub that over the candle - again while praying the candle be cleansed.

Some do Kittyluver, they would be loaded from the bottom in a ''pull-out'' type candle or wrapped around a taper candle and then fixed with a small piece of tape.

I personally would NEVER want to reuse a candle unless I am doing the same spell through a couple of days, you know like if you lit it and because you won't be home so you snuff it out then relight it when you get back home. To use a candle for "Bob" then turn around to use it for "Jim" is a no no to me. Use it all!

When inscribing a name into a vigil candle (love/relationship purposes) for someone who has not legally dropped their married name (maiden/married names hyphenated), would you inscribe the maiden name or what is currently legal? I feel like it should be just the maiden name, but I wanted feedback from others. Thank you.

I kept my married name. (for personal reasons-- I am divorced and have been for several years) It is the name that appears on my tax return and all of my legal documents. I personally write this name for all of my petitions because it is me. It represents me.
Good luck!

Okay thank you! I would normally use the legal name, but I wasn't sure if having her ex's name attached to the work would be a good thing.

The oils can be used on any candles (plain, figural, or glass-encased), also in shampoo and body wash, in baths, as an additive to house-scrub waters, to dress amulets or root curios, and to wear on the body.

I apologize in advance, I did not know where to post this at. Please feel free to move it.
I have 3-vigis candles, that I wish to light tonight (Saturday). Here are as follows:
Clarity vigil fixed by LM
Uncrossing vigil fixed by LM
Stop Gossip vigil by LM
Can I light these candles in a triangle? If so, in which way?
Thanks is advance

Re: Candles: How to Trim Carve Load Petition Pray Dress Arrange Light
what is the goal of your work? Typically, I use four candles with the main candle in the middle. So for example if I wanted to get a job. I would have the steady work candle in the middle of the triangle. The actual triangle would be made up of candles to add to the intentions of the work. So I may add an I can, you can't candle, crown of success, and road opener for example.
And the actual pattern or order of the candles in the triangle does not matter.

My triangle of candles:
The Uncrossing Vigil is for my enemies.
The Clarity Vigil is for myself to help me see things clearly and
The Stop Gossip Vigil is for people who gossip ill of me.
On the Stop Gossip vigil and on the Uncrossing vigil it says to "set the lights with my name paper beneath, face up", does this means what is says ... MY NAME PAPER, FACE UP ?
On the clarity, it'll be for me, to have clarity on what I do. What should place beneath the vigil? It says to " set out an open glass of water and place photos of individuals nearby" Well this vigil is for me, to see clarity, not for someone in particular who i want truth from.
Thoughts?
Thank YOU!

then place a pciture of you next to the water to see clearly. You can also put a petition that states something along the lines of with the grace of God may I be able to see clearly and without fault the path which is set before me to take amen (etc). king solomon is a great product to use with this to make wise decisions

Thank you J82.
Will it be fine to light these 3 vigils tonight all in once, my guess I would place the water and my photo in front of the clarity vigil.
See I am thinking to put these 3 vigils in a triangle. Is this ethical to do? Or should I just light the Stop Gossip a long with the uncrossing vigil together and the clarity vigil in another place/spot?
Thank you.

Re: Candles: How to Trim Carve Load Petition Pray Dress Arrange Light
you can burn in a triangle but are they all part of the same work or seperate.. otherwise set them in a row on a counter. Sure you can seperate them, some ppl seperate work to drawing/love work to negative/repell work and use two different areas. others with limited space switch it up as needed. some ppl place them around similar items to the work which represent it like if a money candle put money around it. starr kind of answered ur question. I dont see the connection so id burn the two together and the claitry seperated from them.

Re: Candles: How to Trim Carve Load Petition Pray Dress Arrange Light
First, I wouldn't do the triangle formation here because they are not reinforcing each other. The stop gossip and the uncrossing are along the same lines of work, but the clarity candle is not. I would just burn the all separately not in a triangle formation. You could substitute the clarity candle with protection work. If you want to do the triangle with the stop gossip and uncrossing work.
And placing them in a triangle has nothing to do with being ethical. I think effectiveness is what we are looking for.
And the rest I agree with j82

I can think of reversing where you flip the candle over cut the top off and make it a bottom then take the bottom and carve it into the candles top and burn it to reverse work on another.

Is it good to burn a black candle during a 2 week full moon?

Re: Candles: How to Trim Carve Load Petition Pray Dress Arrange Light
Full moons dont last for two weeks, moons wax for about two weeks ( get big) and wane for two weeks (get small) of course during those periods you have a full moon and a dark moon (when it cant be seen).. you can burn a black candle it depends on your intention when burning it. some workers dont use moon phases others do. some use planetery others all. Traditional you use wax to draw and wane to send away so if burnnig black candles to break a couple up you would start as the moon wanes and keep it up till its dark.

Burning a candle upside down, someties called "butting the light" is a very traditional way of working when you want to turn back, undo, get rid of, reverse, or send back a person or a spiritual condition.
As for moon phases, that can be added to burning a candle upside down, but it is an entirely different topic.

Hello everyone!
I am starting my relationship with my candles and I have a question that may sound silly, but I cannot find any information anywhere!
How do I light my candles? What is best to light candles - matches, lighter? Do I have one candle to light my other candles? Please help!
Thank you in advance!

Your question has been merged into the long thread on dressing and setting candles. There are more than 600 posts in this thread at the present time -- lots of good questions and answers!
As to your specific query, well, techniques vary by practitioner. I use only wooden matches as the smell of lighter fluid is not to my liking. Your mileage may vary.

I use a candle lighter. Doesn't smell as bad as a cigarette lighter and doesn't burn my fingers like matches sometimes do.

Re: Candles: How to Trim Carve Load Petition Pray Dress Arrange Light
Hi,
I recently bought a 7 day uncrossing candles and I am a little confused on the directions of how to burn the candle. I am new to burning candles so I am mainly confused on what a petition is and what to write on the paper. I have been told that I am under as curse right now and I do believe that cause ever since I started with spell casters I been having stomach and anxiety problems. I have been check out with several doctors and been on several meds too but I still feel the same. I am planning on getting a reading done soon to see what is the root of my problems. But for now I have the candle and need to know how and what to write for the petition? For the herbs and fixing do I rub it on the petition also? I a know about the prayer I have to say but then what do I do with the petition once the candle is done? Should I burn it or is there something esle that I should be doing with it? Any advice and help would be great...

Re: Candles: How to Trim Carve Load Petition Pray Dress Arrange Light
Hello all,
I have been reading the Charmaine Dey book and have a question if no one minds: Dey outlines 3 steps in the dressing of candles, which are cleaning, exorcism/blessing, and charging. I think I understand cleaning and charging, but I haven't seen any discussion of exorcism/blessing. Dey says this involves lighting an altar candle and incense, ringing a bell, sprinkling water, wafting incense, carving the candle with a small sign and anointing (with frankincense, say - this isn't the petition oil, but a preliminary step), and making the sign in the air above the candle(s) - all while making prayers as written in the book.
This is all before the charging of the petition candle. Do you all do this?? I was hoping to set my petition candle simply following the LM instructions on the site, and not even have an altar candle. Any advice??
(P.S. I have read this whole thread plus searched for references to Charmaine Dey - I apologize in advance if I have missed the answer to my question somewhere on this forum. I am very grateful for the your assistance and pray that I am not wearing out my welcome!!)

Re: Candles: How to Trim Carve Load Petition Pray Dress Arrange Light
Hi catherinejoan,
I have the Charmaine Dey book, as well as the reprint of Gamache's candle-burning magic and if you read both, you'll find that although there are similarities in methodology - there are also differences. Once again, there's more than one way to go about prepping a candle and neither is ''better'' or ''stronger'': it's simply a matter of taste, training, habit and what works best for you. The simple instructions on the LM site are just fine to follow for setting a light and you will get fine results using them.
Within the forums you'll find a number of different ways people like to work with candles. Some cleanse candles prior to use, some don't. Pretty much everyone dresses/fixes the candles but the how can vary; methods include one or a combination of carving, anointing, rolling in hot wax fixed with herbs, blowing sachet powder or powdered herbs over an oil-anointed candle (usually referred to as double-dressing), pinning to separate a burn on a taper light. Then the petition paper is placed below the candle-holder, loaded into the bottom of a pillar candle, taped around a vigil light or affixed in some other way and the work is prayed over and lit.
Personally, I prefer working with tapers or pillars rather than vigil lights as there is more wax dripping and thus a greater amount of candle reading information as a general rule (but then there are some impressive vigil light burns as well!). Tapers also allow for a much greater amount of carving which is time I like to use to pray. After, I like anointing with a combination of oils chosen for the condition and rolling in a mixture of crushed herbs also chosen for the condition. Generally I'll burn a 6 hour taper daily for a fixed period of time, usually 3, 5 or 7 days in a row - but up to 13 or 21 depending on the case.
Hopefully this helps out with your questions and no doubt many of the other fine practitionners on the site can also add their 2c.
Blessings and success in your work.

Thank you *so much* for replying to me! I appreciate your generosity in sharing your knowledge and your time also.
I do want to acquire the Gamache book - I think it was out of stock when I ordered Dey, so it will be in a future order. . .

Those methods you describe, I understand these to be in the category of "charging" a particular candle, and I am planning to incorporate these actions into my routine as I develop it. But the particular thing I am actually wondering about is on page 31 and 32 of Dey's book: she (he?) would have you incense the candles and sprinkle with holy water, etc, while invoking spirits, and then the carving here is not for your particular petition, but it is just a little solar cross or pentagram on the bottom, which is then annointed with altar oil (not your particular petition oil). Dey calls this "blessing the candle" and also "consecrating for spiritual use". This is all prior to the preparation for the petition. It sounds as though you could process a large batch of candles this way, and then have them available to charge for particular purposes as required.
I am wondering if this is actually a Wiccan approach (somewhere else here, it is mentioned Dey has some Wiccan ideas), since it doesn't come up in Catherine's discussion that I read here: http://www.luckymojo.com/candlemagic.html.
So, in summary, I guess my question is: do we consider it necessary to follow Dey's steps for "consecrating for spiritual use" prior to charging the candle? Or can I just charge the candle?
I am not looking to cut corners, but as a practical matter, I am trying to figure out how much action is sufficient for me to accomplish the task. I need to feel that I am doing everything properly, because otherwise I will have doubts. On the other hand, I am working in secret, and so I want to keep things fairly simple and low key. I wasn't planning to get into incense and altar candles at this time (at least to start), but I just want to: carve, annoint, and light for 5 days, one candle (and dispose of the remains after, of course). I have acquired a candle holder with a space in the base, where I will enclose my petition and some personal effects. I have memorized psalm 23. Now just waiting for the moon to wax . . .
Thank you again for helping me with this!

Hi catherinejoan,
as you surmised, ''charging'' is more of a Wiccan term and is rarely - if ever - used with respect to hoodoo practice insofar as I know (that said, I'm far from an expert here so take it with a grain of salt!). the same applies to the use of the solar cross or pentagram. although sigils and pentacles of Solomon are used in rootwork, it is not necessary by any means nor is it used by everyone.
I have never followed the ''consecration for spiritual use'' and have never had any problems, nor do I burn incense when preparing candles unless specifically doing a job that I want to give that ''extra push'' to. What you describe as your plan to carve, anoint and light sounds just fine and placing your petition and personal concerns in the base of the candle holder is a fine way to work. Don't over-think things, although I understand you want things ''perfect'', conjure is first and foremost practical and simple along with being quite effective. You may also want to take pictures at intervals while the candle burns in case you want to have the burn divined or want to refer to the images later in conjunction with the results you may get.
Blessings.

Hi aura,
Okay, that is awesome!! And excellent advice, of course, not to over-think - a frequent pitfall for me. I am glad to realize that simple is best, and I also suspect that it should feel good (which it won't if it's too complicated, right?) I will proceed with confidence now.
Thanks very much,
catherine

Hi, I don't think this post is in the right place, but I have no idea where to go! My question is a pretty basic one; the method of prayer. I like to simply state what I want, but I have to say, I feel like this is a little weak. I just wanted to know how do people do the "prayer," as in; do you say actual prayers? Or just state your intention out loud? Or accompany your petition with prayers.

Re: Candles: How to Trim Carve Load Petition Pray Dress Arrange Light
Does anybody ever feel the need to narrate their work as they go along, as if you were instructing a class! I have this horrid habit of doubting myself constantly - which is extremely hindering to holding onto any form of positivity, and I'm gonna get St. Dymphna to help me with that as as soon as I get a blue candle - so I feel like I need to speak aloud my workings; "I will now anoint this candle with Bewitching oil, to draw a sense of allure to me..." so that any negative thoughts don't wreck the entire process and then I regret the work when its over. One evil thought, and I wanna call the whole spell off! Is speaking the process naive, or is it better to remain in a silent, meditative state?

Any tips on cleansing and charging store bought fragrance candles (like from Wal-Mart or CVS) to make them appropriate to use? I'm no where close to a stream or sea water, we have well water.

N1reht: This is a forum for questions and answers pertaining to the Lucky Mojo Curio Company, it's Products, and their uses. That said, if you must use widely available commercial candles (which I do not recommend at all) some people will cleanse them using Florida Water, Hoyt's Cologne, or a light Hyssop wash. Just make sure you let the alcohol based colognes dry fully before lighting.

Re: Candles: How to Trim Carve Load Petition Pray Dress Arrange Light
Let me define some terms:
Smudging: To smoke or suffumigate something or someone with incense; often this term is used in reference to an incense that can be held in the hand and waved about, such as a bunch of smoking and bruning natural herbs, rather than to a prepared stick incense or cone incense which is burned in a stationary position.
Cleansing: To spiritually or physically clean something, especially a factory-made product that many people may have handled, which is going to be used in a ritual; or a person, animal, or object which has become in one way o another spiritually "dirty" or "messed up." I was never taught to cleanse candles by any of my older African American teachers. The custom of wiping down glass-encased vigil lights to cleanse them of factory vibes is fairly recent (as are the candles themselves) and may have entered hoodoo via contact with practitioners of the Santeria religion, among whom it is a custom of longer standing.
Dressing: to ritually anoint or sprinkle an object with oil, perfume, powder, or other spiritual product in preparation for is use during a rite.

Thank you Cat,
Would Epsolm salts dissolved in water suffice if I ever felt the need to "cleanse" a candle?

N1reht.
No. Do not wash candles with water. The wick soaks up the water and will not burn well.

Re: Candles: How to Trim Carve Load Petition Pray Dress Arrange Light
As we all know vigil candles often will go out on you due to a number of factors: too much oil/herbs, wick too thin, drafts, etc. Sometimes, of course, the candle going out can be due to spiritual reasons. Recently, I was having issues where my candles kept going out, so after considerable frustration, one thing I started trying is covering my vigil candles with the Blood of Jesus.
I might have a vigil sitting upon a petition/personal concerns inside a porcelain ramekin (like they use for making creme brulee). I get some oil with protective properties, position myself in front of the candle, and say:
Some oils that might work for this purpose: Protection, Fiery Wall of Protection, 7-11 Holy Oil, Sacred Heart of Jesus or Jesus the King, Dragon's Blood. I'd particularly like to try this sometime with either of the Jesus oils, to take advantage of its red color and thereby enhance the "blood" symbolism.
Another dimension of protection I started earlier tonight involves taking a strip of aluminum foil, putting glue on the dull side, wrapping it around the vigil with the shiny side out, and rubbing Reversing oil around the foil counterclockwise, while praying that any forces, physical or spiritual, that would work against the candle will be reflected, repelled, and sent away. Time will tell how that works...

- 1 Glory Be
- 1 Our Father
- 3 Hail Marys
- In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (rubbing the oil around the rim 3 times clockwise), let this candle and this work be covered with the Blood of Jesus, that it may be protected from any countervailing forces, physical or spiritual, that could disrupt or halt the work. Let this candle burn down clearly and completely, manifesting my goals and intentions fully. (rubbing the oil around the rim of the porcelain ramekin, clockwise, when speaking this next part) Let this work be surrounded and encircled by the Blood of Jesus, a most powerful and holy wall of protection. Because this work is covered, surrounded, encircled, and protected by Christ's blood, no physical or spiritual force may work against it, now or evermore.
- Psalm 23 (though maybe I'd use 91, if I felt it needed stronger protection)
- 3 Hail Marys
- 1 Our Father
- 1 Glory Be

Re: Candles: How to Trim Carve Load Petition Pray Dress Arrange Light
I started a 7 day candle last night but now that I read through most of this thread I would like to change my petition paper out for another one. I used the petion type where I put our names in the tic tac to pattern and put a circle around that said unable to resist me... I would like to change it up a bit by just stating what I would like for this candle to help e with and then put my name over it for control of the situation. Can I switch these out? Thank you

Also,
Is there someone out there that can direct me to thread that explains more about what to do in a ritual?
I find that I keep getting caught up because I am so unsure that I am doing things right.
I try to imagine what I am trying to get out of my candle, I repeat over and over again what I want, I tell it why I want this particular thing..
I'm not really praying to anything specific, should I be? Is simply just stating what I want and showing it with my mind enough? I don't knwo what to say? I don't know how to ask for help... I can figure out who is appropriate to ask for help but I don't know how to go about asking for help..Or is just asking the candle for help enough?
Also, how much time do you spend with your candle?
I hope this makes sence. Thank you

Hi phonehappy,
generally, once a petition has been placed under a candle and the candle set - there's no more petition-swapping
It would be best to let this candle burn, with confidence, and then light another one with the new petition paper. You could also light a second candle with the new petition beneath it to ''back-up'' the first if you will.
When it comes to your prayers, it's personal. Each person will do it a bit differently. Hoodoo comes from a predominantly Protestant Christian religious background therefore many people will speak scripture while they work and/or pray to God. That would be most traditional but it's up to you how you choose to pray. The time spent is a personal thing as well; you can spend as little as the time to speak your petition and light it or as long as it takes to pour your heart out - let Spirit guide you.
If you want to cover candle-setting ''procedure'' or ''ritual'' in depth, do consider booking a magickal coaching session with one of the fine members of AIRR who offers the service. You can look them up through the link here: http://readersandrootworkers.org/wiki/C ... ual_Advice

Q1) 4" regular candles:
When you do love spells, it says you should dress them towards yourself.
Does that mean from base to the wick?
or rub oil on both palms, candle in between both palms and rub the oil on the candle between your palms?
Q2) Bride and groom candle:
Reconciliation with writing a letter and mailing it, do i burn the bride and groom all the way down or only as long as you are taking the bath and writing the letter? And for this the oil has to be poured over the candle and not like the plain candles, correct?
Thanks.
