Someone asked -- so here is the answer:

Because i am an astrologer, and there is a long history of certain herbs, roots, glowers, scents, and colours being associated with the signs of the zodiac and the planets. They are useful when one is calling in celestial spirits.

I'm interested in eventually starting my own business, and I could use some advice (and possibly links and suggestions on books on planetary and zodiac work) on which oils I should work with in order to raise the chances for success in this venture (and possibly order, if the places where I get the supplies still won't carry them by the time I come up with a business plan).

I can't buy everything, so I could use some advice on what the best choices would be on a limited budget. Currently my eyes are on these formulas-

Capricorn, Scorpio, Leo, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, and Pluto.

I'm half tempted to just buy the all-purpose ones, but I have a feeling I'll need something more specific for this.

Hi Amy,

A few questions, first:

1) What kind of business are you starting?

2) Why you are drawn to the specific oils that you listed above?

3) Why you would choose planetary/zodiac oils for this work, versus, say, more specifically business- and prosperity-oriented formulas such as Prosperity, Money Drawing, Wealthy Way, Crown of Success, etc?

That said, if your heart is truly set on using only zodiac/planetary formulas, you have a number of options:

1) Use oils of planets which rule things that are similar to the focus and nature of your business (Mars for construction, mining, manufacturing, etc.; Venus for beauty-related, fashion, luxury items, etc; Mercury for information technology, coffee houses, travel planners, etc; and so forth).

2) Use oils of planets which rule prosperity and increase (Jupiter, Sun, Moon, Venus).

3) Use oils that correspond to your zodiac sign (especially if you are a sole proprietor), and those of your partners (if you have them).

Its for, well working with Pluto I guess, astrological magic, consecrating astrological talismans and charms, anything that needs the kinda energy Pluto has.

Pluto has a dark, mysterious, otherworldly energy. You can use it for nocturnal spellwork, for hiding/shrouding/changing type things.

Always go with your gut though: if your intuition says "GET THIS THING!" then do it. You'll intuitively come up with a way of using it.

I'm wondering how fellow hoodoo practitioners use Lucky Mojo's line of planetary and zodiac oils in spells/rituals. I use my zodiac sign oils to anoint my astral candle for certain rituals and use different planetry oils on corresponding color candles for certain effects. Anyone else use the oils for different purposes?

I first learned about Zodiac Oils from "The Master Book of Candle Burning," for dressing candles, but have also applied them to wax dolls made to associate with people to be influenced if there are no personal concerns or handwriting samples to be had. Hint: Birthdays are often posted on Facebook.

I've used both the plamentary and zodiac oils. I am very much a fan. I've usually used the products in my ceremonial magick, but I have on occasion used them in hoodoo. I think they are a great way to tap into the powers associated with them.

If you employ astrological magick in your work, you could totally use Mercury or Gemini products in conjuction with Road Opener and such to achieve the road opening condition, or get someone to contact you, for example. They are a great alternative to use in conjure and I have enjoyed using them.

I believe some of the formulae used trace their sources back to recipes found in the Old System Grimoires, but I must commend miss cat, because not only are they flawlessly blended, but they pack a great punch

The Master Book of Candle Burning by Henri Gamache (Lucky Mojo sells it) uses planetary oils and zodiac oils in the candle set ups. Usually the planet oil is used for you on, say, a love spell using their zodiac oil on an astral candle. The book outlines rather nicely how to use these candle burning rituals with the oils for desired results. If this is something you are interested in, i'd recommend the book.

I would just like to tell people about my experience with Jupiter Oil. I bought it to wear on Thursdays and have worn it once so far. That day I had very good luck. It was just small things but they make all the difference. Thank You LM for this great Oil!

You know, I got some planetary oils to try out. I usually make my own following the old formulas that you have to painstakingly find, but I thought I'd give it a shot. I was making a Jupiter talisman for wealth and fame for a client and after the ceremony to ensoul the talisman I anointed it with Jupiter oil. Right as I took a whif of the oil I instantly recognized the traditional formula, but man was there something "else" to it. It somehow smelled "righter" (I know not a word) than other Jupiter formulas I had seen. I don't know what they put in it (and i'm not asking), but obviously Miss cat and team know their traditional planetary formulae and man do they know how to add power to those things.

My client reported double his earnings in less than one weekend and consistently from then on.

Oh, you'll love them. If I recall correctly, you also work in a ceremonial tradition, so you'll find that the oils compliment planetary ceremonies perfectly and are great for astrological talismans. I've even used them for Picatrix workings and they really add what I'm looking for.

I have a background in ceremonialism, but for the most part it was too stuffy for me. I prefer to be more fluid and efficient. Some tinges of the ceremonial are still present in my work, and I do experiment with evocation to be sure, but I'm much more a folk-magic grrl overall.

But I do work in some planetary energies from time to time when it seems appropriate, most often with simple planetary day and hour timing (astrology is definitely not a strong area for me).

Jupiter and Mercury get used quite frequently here, and I could find all sorts of uses for Sol, Luna, and Venus. Goodness. I guess next time I make a LM order, I'll just have to get the whole set. Now...to do a little money-drawing to get a little extra sumthin'-sumthin' for some new oils.

I just got some Mercury oil... thought it would be good for all kinds of communication and as a writer and a Virgo it seemed right up my alley. I like it so far, though haven't noticed any really striking results. I tend to wear a little of several oils... maybe I need to see what happens differently if I just wear one.

@freegirl - I got the Mercury powder and just love it. I do a lot of work w/Archangel Michael as well, and Wednesdays are ruled by both the planet Mercury and Archangel Michael, so this is the day wherein I'd most likely use the Mercury powder and/or my Arch Michael oil, although I'd also use Mercury powder for any day of planned business mtgs or extended work w/clients, in addition to using Arch Michael during extended travels, or when encountering chaotic environments. I too am a Virgo ruled by Mercury and I'm thinking that the Mercury powder will really come in handy the next Mercury retrograde, which always throws me off.

Not sure if it’s b/c I’m Virgo, or just the power of the product, but another great powder/oil that I work w/is Solomon Seal Root. I cannot brag enough about the positive benefits of this product on the psyche, and it also has a protective component to it.

I also have the Venus powder, which I wear on Fridays (ruled by Venus) every so often. I've noticed ppl in general, including all co-workers are more loving twds me - literally more positive w/happy demeanors. Haven’t worn it around a love interest yet, but I’m assuming it can influence attraction btwn lovers as well.

I am looking at the planetary oils that LM sells right now and one of them is called Planet oil. it states that its a combination of jupiter, mars, mercury , moon and neptune oils.

now if i wanted to buy this oil for use in conjunction with road opener for opening lines of communication ( mercury aspect of the oil) is this appropriate to use more then simply mercury oil?

are they more or less equal? or would mercury oil be a better choice because planet oil combines more then one planetary use with it?

Well, if you are just solely working with Mercury, and you dont see yourself working with any other planet. Then I would work with Mercury oil. You may want to get tobacco as well since that is great for communication.

On the other hand, if you work with a combination of planets then I would go for the planet oil.

You will see where Mercury oil and Road opener is given as examples for communications and the appropriate day of the weeks. This is great stuff, enjoy!

I dont think lucky mojo would put anything in the products that would jeopardize or go against the description. The only thing I can think of is if someone perhaps put poppy seeds instead of poppy flowers, but I doubt that. Maybe take a picture and send it to lucky mojo

Herbs and roots may have many different uses. Rest assured that the Neptune oil isn't going to suddenly double as confusion oil, unless bringing confusion is what Neptune does, truth be told my grasp of planetary magic is really shaky once you get past the seven classical spheres...

Thank you for your response ConjureMan Ali and everyone else. Before learning about poppy seeds use in Hoodoo , I read somewhere that they were used to induce Psychic ability. That the planetary oils also have recipes collected from European-based practices is just what i was wondering. After using my Neptune oil, I experienced a deeper insight to myself and my creativity. I would love to know if anyone else had tried this oil and if they had a similar experience.

I would like to sing the praises of Lucky Mojo Zodiacal Oils! I have the Aries oil and the Sagittarius oil which I bought to dress candles on my ancestor altar. What really knocks me out is that the Sagittarius oil actually smells like my Dad. It's always very emotional when I add this to his candle. It's a wonderful way to stay connected as I venerate those in my family who have passed on as I ask for their continued love, guidance and protection. I have found adding the Zodiacal oils in addition to blessing or holy oil really does lend some extra power.

I have to agree, I love the Zodiac oils too! I have the Virgo one for myself and the Aquarius one for both my son and my boyfriend. The oils smell amazing and you can feel the extra "oomph" they add to the spells!!

Butchcomer: Thank you for sharing that! I will be starting a really nice new ancestor altar when my wife and I move and love hearing about other peoples existing altars. I also stand by the Zodiac Oils as my wife and I have been buying them and using them for years now... (Aries for her, Taurus for me) They can also be used to help imbibe the user with qualities associated with that sign, if I am not mistaken. Sometimes my Taurus oil amplifies my Taurus-ian qualities a little too much!

Now, to get back to the Neptune / Poppy seeds query of February 12, 2011 -- YES, those are Poppy seeds and the use is absolutely deliberate.

Neptune is the planet that rules dreams and drugs, especially drugs that make you dream, and the most important of these is opium, which has a long history of use as a sacred drug (e.g. in ancient Crete) and also ABuse (see any street junkie).

Poppy is the plant from which most (but not all) opium is made. (It also exists in Lettuce, of all places). So Poppy seeds symbolize and put us in contact with the beautiful and medicinal and dream-inspiring aspects of the Poppy plant and opium -- and, yes, the negative aspects as well (addiction, befuddlement, confustion).

Let us consider this: every planet has positive and negative qualities. Some are mostly postivie (Jupiter and Venus come to mind). But even they have negative qualities (Jupiter becomes obese and also over-spends, Venus becioomes vain, lazy, and hyper-conscious of beauty).

Some planets are neutral (Mercury is a good example).

Some are fairly negative (Saturn and Mars are classically considered in this way).

Neptune has as many good qualities as negative, but the negative qualities are intimately tied to the good qualities: Dreaminess or narcosis? Psychicism or delusions? Imaginative visions or drug abuse? Each of these paired ideas relates to the other, and Neptune encompasses them all. Poppy seeds make a nice topping to challah bread. Poppy seeds are also the generative expression of the poppy plant that has ruined so many, many lives by wasting them in fruitless fantasies.

Why would I choose them? It's not an either or thing, and I certainly plan on looking in to them as well, but I've been dabbling in astrology the past year or so, so I thought it might not be a bad idea to supplement with them.

1) Cosmetics and toiletries, so Venus seems like an obvious then. Mercury doesn't seem like a bad idea either, since this will probably be mostly an online store for awhile.

2) I have a good feeling about Jupiter, since Sagittarius is my rising sign.

3) Gemini it is. Then again, Mercury rules Gemini...

Yes, I remember that. Gamache doesn't mention carving or inscribing names or personal info into the candles, or even placing photos underneath them. Instead he creates a link between candle and individual by using the appropriate Zodiac oil. I always found that interesting. Of course, I see no reason why a combination of carving info and zodiac oils cannot be used.

I read Henri Gamache's New Revised The Master Book of Candle Burning today, and in it he suggests anointing ALL Astral Candles with Zodiac Oil. The color of the candle determines the sign. Now, why shouldn't I use Capricorn Oil on a Capricorn Astral Candle? Is it because the zodiacal formula symbolically includes all of the fixed stars and so is "whole" like a person, or is it a more economically motivated thing?

I guess I just don't get what Zodiac Oil is for.
