Bone Shell Nut Stone Dice Domino Rune Sortilege Readings Divination Questions and Answers

Unread post by jwalke12 » Mon Nov 08, 2010 8:15 pm

Hello,

I've wanted to learn how to throw bones for a while now, but I can't seem to find anything out about it in relation to hoodoo practice. Does anyone know of a link or a book which teaches how to throw bones?

Thanks so much,

J

The Association of Independent Readers and Rootorkers (AIRR) site gives basic information and has a list of workers who perform this method of divination, read about it here http://www.readersandrootworkers.org/in ... ral_Curios

You might book a reading with one of them to gain additional information.

Thanks!

The thing is though, I don't want to buy a reading, I would like to learn how to read bones.

So far I can't find any books, so I am assuming that this is something passed on from person to person(?)

jwalke12,

The point jwmcclin was making is that by talking to someone who actually has the gift to do any one of the large array of divination techniques and systems called Throwing the Bones you might just pick up a few things. They could probably tell you if any books are out there, and if any are worth your time.

A small side note thought. There is no one system of "Throwing the Bones", no one monolithic thing. So any book you do find, if any, will in all likelihood only provide you with that authors style, whether one of the old systems or some self invented one.

Hi Everyone!
I'm really excited to have received my bone reading set from LM. This is something I've been waiting to learn for a long time. I tried to make it to the May workshops, but living on the east coast would turn two days of workshops into a four day trip and I couldn't get the time off from work. I'm planning on making it in May 2012 after I've, hopefully, graduated from the course!

The information that came with the bone set is really helpful. There were just two questions that I had which I'm hoping that someone who was able to attend the workshops will be able to answer.

First, the information provided with the kit, written by cat and D. John Michael Hilford, states that "Incense is used to bring in your Ancestors and the Ancestors of the client." Would LM Spirit Guide incense be a good choice for this or is there a more traditional option?

Secondly, the same information suggests that you "Go back in time until your Ancestors and the clients Ancestors are the same." It goes on to suggest you go farther back to when your Ancestors and the clients were one with the Ancestors of the animals and plants. Though I completely understand the concept and realize I may be over-thinking it, I was wondering if there were any more specifics on this process?

Thanks in advance for any information you'd be willing to share and I hope you're all well!

Spirit guides & ancestors are sometimes the same people but not always. SG incense may be useful. Frankincense has long been used b4 doing divination like tarot

1) The choice of incense is yours. Francincense and Myrrh, mixed, is a traditional resin incense of the old times.

2) This is a visualization and meditation process. Can't really be described in cold type, sorry.

Greetings everyone,

I've wanted to begin assembling my own set of bones to throw. I've always expected it takes some time for all the ingredients to find you/you them, but was wondering of there were rules or formulae to follow and maybe some advice or stories how some of you created your sets.

Thank you everyone.

I suggest that you purchase a set of bones from Lucky Mojo. Included will be a detailed flyer that explains a great deal about the methods and techniques of reading bones and adding to your bone set.

Hi Miss Cat:
I have been listening to the LMHRW hour radio show. I enjoy when you read the bones for callers. I am intriuged by bone reading, as I am Native American and we have a similar healing/reading system that involves bones. Unfortunately, I know of no living elder who has that knowledge or gift anymore. I was just wondering about the bones and what things you added to yours. You mentioned on the air that you had chinese doll hands or parts? Can you add anything you like to a set of bones? what is the symbolism of the doll parts in your set? Are the shells you use a traditional element to hoodoo or Native American bones? or are they most significant to African forms of bone reading? Thanks so much for the info! ~SweetLady

Likewise for both the book and listening to the bone readings Miss Cat gives on the radio show: this thread and those radio readings pushed me to order a set which I look forward to working and learning with.

Miss Cat is gonna start the newest reading fad / method revival! Sticks and stones and rocks and bones

I received a real gift today from nature and my spirits.

Recently I've been called to work with La Madama and St. Martha the Dominator. A reader at HooDoo Psychics confirmed this connection. I asked these spirits to give me some signs and help in the world to let me know that I was on the right path, and help in working with them.

Today I was walking through Boston Common on my way to a charity event and I noticed something on the ground. It was a squirrel skeleton, nearly completely decomposed. It was right near the curb on the park path where I was walking. A voice said to me, "Get those bones!"

I carefully picked out as many as I could and put them in a napkin.

Now I have these bones. How do you clean them and prepare them for divination or what not? There are some tiny bits of flesh clinging to some parts and I want to get rid of it. Anyone have any ideas? Miss cat?

Peace,
Mary Bee

Either Maceration or Dermestid Beetles (Museum Beetles) are the two best options. That or burying them for about a year!

I would definitely say that finding bones like that is a good sign, especially for La Madama as bone reading and cartomancy is often associated with her.

Have you all seen this page on Bone Throwing over at the AIRR site:

That is a really good starting place.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, Miss cat is currently writing a book on Bone Throwing and Divination. So you will indeed get to have a book like the one you are searching for soon!

It is NOT in stock -- we are having a batch air-shipped in for the workshops -- and we will hold orders until after we get the truck shipment in, which will be the beginning of the second week of May.

I have this on my wish list! I have a question... are the bones limited only to the ones in the kit? I guess what I'm asking is this a traditional bone set or are their other variations on throwing the bones? Can one add bones of their own to this set ? In listening to the LMHRH on podcast, it sounds like Miss Cat has additional items in her bones she read if I am understanding that right in listening....Just curious since I'm fairly new still and learning.

I've read in some places that you should learn bone reading from an experienced teacher in person, but the fact that the book and bones are being sold by LM seems to suggest that one can get started on one's own. Is that the case, or can one attain a decent skill level alone/with a long-distance teacher? Also, is this a skill that could be improved upon with a crossroads ritual? Thanks!

I have been self-teaching myself the bones for a little while now. It seems to be able to "piggy-back" on my natural seer gift quite nicely. If you are open to the spirits, or your ancestors, and can already interpret signs, you should have no problem learning the bones. A gifted teacher can't hurt at all...but is not absolutely necessary. Also, all skills can be improved upon with crossroads work. This is no different.

Odessa,
I would like to add also that not only can you add bones, but you should; the kit above is basically a wonderful starter kit, after which you will be lead by you ancestors to add the various bones and curios that they will need to communicate to you.

I missed the workshop this year, but attending last years and now have the book, which is awesome; that book and your starter bone set and you'll hit the ground running for sure.

I don't know where you are, but at some point I plan on driving up to Lucky Mojo for a live in person bone reading with Cat. Not only because I want to get a reading from Cat, but also I believe that it will help me deepen my understanding of the bones. A traditional Sangoma spends a LOT of time with more experienced Sangoma's just watching them do readings and letting the knowledge seep in; obviously this is not an option for most of us but I plan to do what I can.

Totally agree with Joseph Magnuson.

There are cases of gifted Sangoma's never being taught by (physical) teacher at all, they simply knew.
Of course most Sangoma spend a long time in a personal apprenticeship watching reading after reading and absorbing the skills.

Most importantly though, in traditional Sangoma readings and in our modified Sangoma-style Hoodoo bone reading system you DO have a teacher, many in fact; your ancestors.

If I have my dates right, the bone reading book should be shipping soon, and I can't wait to get my copy and my starter set of bones. I already have my first addition: a beautiful little skull carved from mammoth ivory, that something slapped me upside the head to get at a recent rock and gem show. I am very excited to start learning about throwing bones.

Thank you all for the answers on my question! ......I'm not too far from California, Ckolb. I hope to be able to go to Lucky Mojo myself for the workshops some time. I would love to learn how to read the bones over at LM.

I got my bone book and set last week! I have been studying the book, meditating on the bones that came with the set, and have already added a few bones of my own: a piece of petrified wood, a quartz crystal, a John the Conqueror root, and a chicken wish bone. I was drawn to this tool out of a desire to stretch my divination skills, expand and deepen my work with Hoodoo, and work even closer with my Ancestors, and I'm very eager to really get started.

Question: what would be a good traditional way to consecrate/bless my set? Having been a professional Tarot reader/instructor with multiple decks I have various ways I personally consecrate a divination tool, but if there is a traditional way to consecrate a bone-reading set I would much rather do that. This tool really feels like it wants me to treat it special, and with as much of the tradition as possible.

Thanks in advance for your advice, and thanks to Catherine Yronwode for signing my book; that was a very pleasant surprise! :)

I have used Blum's book on Rune divination, which Lucky Mojo carries, but I can't recommend it because the readings it produces are very ambiguous.

I have also used "The Complete Illustrated Guide to Runes" by Nigel Pennick, published my Element Books, Ltd and found it lucid and well-organised. By "used", I mean that I have done some rune-casting with very variable results.

A friend of mine on the Internet several years ago asked me to do a rune cast concerning a problem that had been bothering him. I couldn't make head or tail of the reading, so I sent it to him and asked him if it meant anything to him.

His response rather surprised me. He said "My God, it sure does. Thanks a lot." Even from Blum's confusing book, I once got a reading which was eerily appropriate. I had drawn Odin's Rune concerning the fate of a seriously ill colleague of mine. I got Death the first time which didn't surprise me. The second time I drew Odin's Rune, I got Warrior.

It meant, of course that he would "not go gently into that good night" but would go down fighting. In the weeks before his death, he gave a series of brilliant lectures to his colleagues which I was privileged to attend. He wrestled with the Grim Reaper to the very end.

On the other hand, I would be less than honest if I did not admit that many of my readings were sheer gibberish. I think that, for one thing, one must be in the right frame of mind to do them correctly. Also, there is always some ambiguity in the interpretation of the reading and I may have chosen the wrong meanings for some of the runes.

I personally have used Blum's system and found it valuable.

I have also written my own history of rune divination, which seeks to put Blum ad others into a historical context. It is here:

RUNES: FUTHARK AND UTHARK IN RUNE MAGIC, RUNE CASTING, AND RUNIC DIVINATION
http://www.luckymojo.com/runes.html

Since you asked, yes, we carry black stone runes in a black bag:

DIV-RUN-BKST
Black/Gold Stone Runes in Black Velvet Bag:
$15.95

This is a small, simple, and easy-to-follow book on runes we sell in the shop:

BOO-DIV-PLRB
Predictions Library: Runes by David V. Barrett
$0.00

And, of course, we carry Blum's book with its own rune stone set as well, still the most popular after all these years:

BOO-DIV-RUNE
The Book of Runes (book set / rune stones)
$35.

The following book takes a more Jungian and spiritual approach than seen in many rune books, but people love it and have kept it popular as well:

BOO-DIV-RUTR
Runes for Transformation, Kaedrich Olsen
$16.95

I second that Joseph. I got to meet Kaedrich Olsen when the store I worked for had him in. While on my lunch break I was listening into his class and found it fascinating. Really wish I was able to sit in the whole time! :-D

I was recently lucky enough to visit Miss Cat and everyone at the Lucky Mojo Shop and while I was there I picked up a starter set of Bones and Miss Cat's book. I have been hooked ever since. I have a couple of questions though for anyone who is working with this form of divination. I have the baby doll head and I filled it with the dirt of a spirit who has agreed to work with me but I think my spirit has changed its mind because I can not make much sense out of this piece in my bone set. It seems to always fall on the outer edge of the throw by itself, face down or looking away from the other pieces. On the few occasions when it does land in the midst of the throw it just doesn't seem to contribute anything to the reading. If it were looking at a piece or group of pieces I could interpret that as this being something important to be paid attention to, but it never seems to land that way. I have even worked with it alone to see if it wanted to be removed from the set, but it didn't. For now I will keep working with it and see how it goes, but I am curious to hear how others using this piece interpret it.

I have also been looking at bone sets on the web and the variety is fascinating. Each set is truly unique. I am still building my set - adding pieces and taking them away as I learn how they speak to me, or not. I am very excited to see myself how my set finally settles out and I suspect that pieces may be coming and going forever as I learn more and build a better relationship with them. I had a reading done by a friend with his set and I learned a lot from that as he explained his process as he went along. I am also gleaning quite a bit from listening to the Lucky Mojo Radio Hour since Miss Cat usually throws the bones at some point during the show. I am rambling now, but suffice to say, I would love to discuss this divination method further with anyone interested in doing so.

Hello, Jibrael --

It is traditional to smoke objects in incense to bless them for the work.

Hi, Michele --

I am so glad you have taken to bone reading. An endorsement from someone of your experiencse, wisdom, and stature in the community means a lot to me. Thanks.

My comments:

As for the doll-head, i too have seen it land looking away -- not interested, it seems. I think that because it contains the spirit of a human being, it is a bit more temperamental than many of the animal bones. But when it does speak -- it really does. In fact, it tends to become the center of the conversation.

I have seen it "look" at a buckeye nut (health) and demand that we speak of the sitter's health when the sitter simply wanted a love reading.

I have seen it "look" at a wish bone and tell me to tell the sitter that a wish, long despaired of, would be coming true soon.

Also, like you, i too find myself adding to and subtracting from my bone set over time. I have had losses due to my cat stealing little bones and due to my own myopia -- leaving small bones on the ground and losing them. I have also given away bones to people who seemed to need or want them. Likewise i have had special bones given to me by visitors, and i have "fallen in love with" bones that came into the shop for resale and felt it necessary to keep them. Being a strong believer in synchronicity, i have taken these losses and gains as part of the natural ebb and flow of my life.

Thank you Miss Cat. This makes perfect sense. My sense of it is also that if it looks at something that piece or group of pieces would be important, but my spirit seems to be disinterested. The few times it has landed in a way that I could call participatory, it looks up or away. Could be that most of the readings I throw are just for practice interpreting, and therefore not worth the spirit's effort. I do throw one real reading every morning for the day, but not much interest there either. As I said, I will keep working with it and see how it goes. It doesn't want to be removed so maybe it is waiting for an important reading or a reading for someone else to speak up. I am thinking of going to Balboa Park and reading for free some weekend, away fom the Plaza where the professional readers congregate, or maybe hook up with one of the local shops to offer free readings. I'm sure I'll wear my friends out as well, foisting readings on them unbidden. I am excited about divination again!

I have been working with my Bone Reading set for over a year, I believe, and been enjoying it. Plus had the great opportunity to take Miss Cat's M.I.S.C. Workshop and her workshop in Santa Cruz on the subject which has helped greatly. Never once have I not been amazed at what the bones will say and the insight given.

Well, just based on the sales of our bone sets with instructions plus sales of my book "Throwing the Bones" -- that is, NOT counting the people i personally know who were already working with bones before i published on the subject (like Jeffrey Vanderson in AIRR and the other folks mentioned in the acknowledgements of my book) -- there should be between 200 people (the number who have purchased bone sets) and 400 people (the number who purchased books only) currently aware of and working with some or all of the methods i have described.

Many folks are reading this thread so I am guessing there is some interest.

I have been working with them every day since I got them and I am also impressed with how well they read, despite my tinkering with which bones I plan to keep in the set more or less permanently. It's like making your own tarot deck - exciting, but a little scary too.

Michele, because the acquisition of bones is not through any kind of steady sources, we have made dozens of variant sets. They all contain bones, nuts, shells, items carved of bone, and small items of symbolic importance.

We are continually sourcing and acquiring new bone items and non-bone for these sets. We recently got in a number of turkey wishbones, raccoon penis bones, weasel jaw bones, bone and ebony dominoes, and bisque doll legs. This past weekend we went to a wholesale gem show and came back with hundreds of carved bone skull beads, bone dice, and feathers finely carved of bone for distribution into divination sets, and then we met a dealer from Africa who had hundreds of rare antique British West African half-penny coins (the tiny fabulous ones with the Star of David on them) which will go into some of the sets and will also be available singly.

I actually have one of those coins. It is in my I'm not sure container of suitable items that I am considering. I thought it might be useful to indicate a small sum of money, but for now I am working with a silver dime to represent money in general. It will probably make it into the final set once I get more comfortable reading the number I have now.

I also noticed that different sets had different items. I ordered a mink jaw because I liked the idea of the jaw for gossip and mine did not have one. I have a Little John root for more eloquent speech.
