Rose Water Questions and Answers

Unread post by AnddieUS » Wed Jul 18, 2012 2:14 pm

Recently, I had a discussion with a friend about the use of Florida Water for cleaning one's ancestral altar and placing a drop or two in any water placed on an ancestral altar.

The friend stated that they were taught to use Rose Water, instead of florida water in any offering to their ancestors, as this was more pleasing to the Spirits.

I have never heard of or thought to use rose water in this manner.

Can anyone give their thoughts and/or share their knowledge on using rose water this way. Thanks in advance :D Anddie

It sounds like a lovely idea, especially for a female ancestor.

Kananga Water Cologne and Florida Water Cologne are commonly used in ancestral work and cleansings, the former from Indonesian culture transplanted (with Kananga trees) to the Caribbean, and the latter as a result of influence from the Afro-Carribean religious traditions.

The cologne of African American hoodoo traditionally is Hoyts.

Rose Water or Rose Cologne for ancestors is something done in traditional South East Asian and Middle Eastern ancestral work and spirit work.

Thank you Mama Micki and ConjureMan Ali for your replies. I use both Florida Water and Hoyt's cologne in ancestral work and cleansings. It was interesting to learn a new use for Rose Water.

My Grandmother who passed loves Rose Water, so I make sure to give her a small cup of it every so often on my Ancestor Altar.

I just received a bottle of the LM Rose Water and I opened it by my ancestor altar (not planned), it seems that I will be placing some on the altar "every so often" as well. Thanks again!

This is so interesting! I have been putting rose water on my ancestor altar for years. It seemed like so many women in my family had loved the smell of roses in life, it just seemed to make sense. I did not know that it was common practice.
Thank you Saint Jude, Saint Expedite, and Our Lady of Loreto for your loving help and guidance!

I also use rosewater when venerating the ancestors in my line-females and the many men from East Texas who grew beautiful, antique roses!

I have noticed that a LOT of Grandmas really LOVED rose scent/flowers when they were alive and simply LOVE Rose Water now that they have passed on. Take notice, those of you just starting to make that ancestor altar...this thread may be of use to you! :)

My female ancestors LOVE rose water and orange water! Florida Water Cologne is ok, but mine seem to prefer rose and orange. My male ancestors really seem to respond to Hoyt's, whiskey and tobacco water (because most of them were smokers when they were alive).
