Chango Macho Vigil Candle Questions and Answers

Unread post by SweetLady » Tue Feb 26, 2013 5:32 pm

Hello everyone:

I have been "browsing" around the forum and the LM site. Trying to find a hoodoo spell or ritual to petition Chango for help with uncrossing to destroy curses and to destroy the enemy. I have not really found any posts or prayers or spells that are specific to him. I know that he is from the voodoo pantheon and I have read the information about him under the products listing in the LM Catalogue. I do not see any specific spells or prayers for him. Just information about his history and colors, numbers, etc.

I am able to find stuff about St. Barbara and St. Martha with a forum search for Chango, but no information about how to use hoodoo to work with Chango Macho. Can anyone give me information on how to work with Chango Macho or provide a link to where I might find this on the site? Your help is appreciated, thank you.

First, let me correct you. Chango is not "from the Voodoo pantheon." Rather, he is an orisha or deity in the pantheon of the Yoruba religion known as Lukumi or Santeria.

You can read more about African religions here:

You can read more about the Orishas and the religion of Lukumi-Santeria here:

Chango Macho spiritual supplies are interesting items in hoodoo. They exist as a form of cultural exoticism, much like Lucky Buddha spiritual supplies and Japanese Lucky Seven spiritual supplies (the latter are named for the seven Luck Gods of Japanese indigenous kami-worhip religion). All three of these items have been sold in hoodoo candle shops since the 1940s-980s (the Lucky Buddha being the earliest, i believe) and have had limited distribution and popularity. As far as i know, some enterprising occult shop proprietor in New York City added these titles to his or her list of products, probably in consultation with a client or customer, but they do not represent the religions to which the deities are actually connected. Chango Macho probably came to hoodoo via an occult shop request from Dominican, Puerto Rican, or Cuban immigrant customers -- but why the entire pantheon of orishas did not follow suit is unknown to me.

Chango Macho is an old Cuban Santeria formula employed to invoke and petition the African Yoruba orisha Shango, Spirit of Thunder and Lightning and the wielder of the Double Bladed Axe, in his male form, as distinguished from his female form as the Catholic Santa Barbara.

Dress and fix vigil light candles with oils plus optional herbs or dusting sachets, and pray for your desires, add a written petition, photo, or seal; burn in a fire-safe place.

That is very interesting that it just happened to be Chango and stopped there, for the most part. I bet there is some amazing history behind the addition.

Thanks for that information Ms. Cat:
I did not know Chango was not from voodoo. I have read about him on voodoo sites and in a voodoo-hoodoo book. I do remember that he was a Youruban King, and that is from West Africa. I am unsure how or why he is revered in some of the South American countries, but I will read the information on the links. He must be very strong if so many people have embraced him.
Are there Chango prayers on the fixed vigil candles?

Our prepared 8" glass-encased vigil lights come with a dressing of oils and herbs and will burn for 5 - 7 days, depending on ambient temperature and other factors.

If you wish to set a traditional Novena of nine days, you will either have to start and stop the candle (which can result in a smoky glass), or purchase two candles to run continually over the 9-day period.

Always practice fire safety when setting vigil lights. If you must keep them lit when you are away or asleep, be sure that no pets or children can get into the room with them, that they are not near curtains or flammable cloth or paper, and that you have a smoke alarm in your house. Placing lit vigils in the bathtub is quite common, but you must not have a shower curtain if you use this method. Setting them into a fireplace is ideal, as there is a ready-made chimney for them.
