Hello everyone! My name is Benjamin and I am from Houston, Texas.

I guess this is the part where I state a little bit about myself. I love to study religion and various spiritual practices from around the world; probably one of the many reasons why I am majoring in anthropology. I am mostly Catholic; I was raised as one but practicing magic seems to throw things a bit off. I have a background/knowledge of Wicca, Witchcraft, Shamanism, Judaism, and Ceremonial Magic that I have amassed over the past ten to eleven years. I am thoroughly interested in learning more about Hoodoo and integrating it into my daily life a bit more. I have found these forums, and the LM website as a whole, to be more than helpful in learning. I greatly appreciate the wealth of knowledge, help, and kindness conveyed by everyone on here.

Hi Benjamin, welcome! I am Catholic too, though I grew up Protestant. I find that hoodoo blends nicely with our faith. It is a Christian point of view, after all. Plus, the Vigil candles remind me of the ones we use in church - except they are colorful and have oils and sparkles on them. The incense too ( just like in church ), and the prayers and psalms ( also very Catholic ), plus having the bottle of Holy Water and the Blessed Salt in the house - all these things fit well into a Catholic home. You might want to print out a copy of the blessing for salt ( Old Roman Rite ) and take it with you when you get your priest to bless the salt ( it will save him time trying to look it up ). Lots of hoodoo folks have home altars - the only other people I have seen doing that are devout Catholics ( who home school their kids and wear veils in church ). What I'm saying is, hoodoo and the Catholic church go very well together in my experience. You can have a home altar with pictures of Jesus and your favorite saints and people will probably just assume you lean toward old fashioned Catholic devotion.

I have had great luck with the candles I have burned, as well as with using Chinese Wash in my Pine-sol to mop the house when doing home cleansing. If anything, the hoodoo and Lucky Mojo items get you to pray more - and that's a good thing in anybody's church.

Thank you so much for the insight, MoonBreath! I've erected a small altar in my closet for daily devotions. I have enjoyed the vigil candles and frankincense that I burn. I ran out of Holy Water though, and I have never had Blessed Salt...I am not sure what I would use the Salt for. I typically don't like it on my altar because I feel like it keeps away spirits. >.<
