catherineyronwode: We do not sell opium.

Lmao! Well I should hope not.

I would recommend to anyone who wants to attempt this spell to please buy LM brand poppy flowers and/or LM brand tobacco.

Please do not attempt to buy the street drug, opium, as that would be highly illegal.

Hi Cat & Forum Members,

I was looking up LM products to stock up on, and found that on the crossing and jinxing products page (http://www.luckymojo.com/crossing.html) - spider webs may be a part of crossing formulas.

I read about "live things" in LM pages and get the symbolism of trapping an enemy in a spider web; but would a hoodoo rootworker use it to snare a relucttant lover, for example? Or do spiders in Hoodoo have a mostly negative connotation?

Thanks in advance folks!

Hello,

Because we don't sell spider webs in our shop, i have merged this into the thread on "Herbs and Roots LMCCo Doesn't Carry" -- but do note that when it comes to spider, we do carry tarantula exoskeletons.

Spiders have different meanings in different cultures and thus in contemporary terms, they have varied meanings as cultures mingle in the United States. See

http://luckymojo.com/spider.html

That being said, i do not think it is a good idea to ask questions like "would a hoodoo rootworker do this [behaviour]?" because posing theoretical questions in that form may all too easily result in distortions of fact, as interviewees seek to please their interviewers.

This phenomenon, in which the informant "pleases" or "ameliorates" the collector, is well known to folklorists and anthropologists, and therefore one of the first things a newcomer to the art of collecting folk-lore is taught is how to ask a question.

Let me explain:

First, i am going to expect that you understand now why we do not use this structure

"Would a hoodoo rootworker use spider webs to snare a reluctant lover?"

But note too that

"Would you use spider webs to snare a reluctant lover?"

is equally improper. Perhaps surprisingly the following two questions are also non-starters:

"How do hoodoo rootworkers use spider webs?"
"How do you use spider webs?"

In fact the only right way to ask the question is like this:

"In my country we have spiders. You have them too?"

Listen to and record the reply.

"Can you tell me about spiders?"

Listen to and record any replies, no matter how many, whether or not folk-lore or folk-magic is mentioned. If no folk-magic is mentioned and the interview subject is a folk-magician, inquire a bit more deeply:

"Do you find any uses for spiders or spider webs in your work?"

Listen to and record any replies.

Now, following these methods, you may not demand a reply to a theoretical question -- but you will learn about the folk-magic of the person you are interviewing and, by extension, abut that person's culture.

Having collected folk-magic in this way for about 50 years i can tell you that no African American practitioner has ever told me that he or she used spider webs for attracting lovers. This does not mean that such a belief could not exist, but as time goes on, it appears less and less likely that i will ever hear such a belief.

Rather, what i have been told about spider webs by African American rootworkers divides into two tendencies --

(1) There is the practical folk-medical use of spider webs for binding bleeding wounds (found among European Americans and Native Americans as well).

(2) There is the use of spiders and their webs as exemplars of generalized and non-species-specific arthropods and reptiles (insects, spiders, snakes, lizards) employed as "vermin" in Crossing recipes.

Good luck!

Thanks Cat, but honestly in my head it was a "simple question" lol. On a serious note, it just reminds me how complex human language can be, its not what is said, but rather, what is understand that is the hallmark of communication! :-)

I will read your link about spiders to get a better idea of the symbolism of spiders in hoodoo.

Once again, thank you for being an invaluable resource to the community!

I am looking for squill root. I have not gotten a response yet. If you do not have it, please let me know. If you know of any company that does it will be great. There is another question that I need to ask. I will not include it on this post.

Hi queendee11. I moved your post to a more appropriate thread, because Lucky Mojo Curio Company does not sell squill root. Also, per the Lucky Mojo Forum Rules, advertising of other company's products is not allowed. I do wish you the best of luck in your search.

As Miss cat wrote earlier in this very thread:

"Re: No squill root??
Squiill Root is "a dangerous irritant poison, producing inflammation of the alimentary canal, and urinary organs, and proving fatal in the dose of only 24 grains of the powder." It suppresses coughs when mixed with serious opioids such as heroin, morphine, and opium. You can no longer even buy Indonesian-made African Sea Coconut Cough Syrup from us because it has Squill Root in it and the FDA has banned its import. Sorry, folks."

Hello. I have a tendency to move my herbs and roots around, from bags to bottles and back again, the label sometimes falls off, or if I wrote it by hand smears off. I have some herbs WHICH I MOST LIKELY PURCHASED FROM LUCKYMOJO (The only reason I can't say with 100% surety is because the label is now missing). Since I paid for them, I would like to use them but can't remember what kind of herb it is. I have a photograph. If anyone would like to take a crack at naming the herb I can send it to you in a private message since we aren't allowed to post links here.

As I have already asked about "charging" Items (herbs, roots, minerals), and got my answer (which makes much more sense to me than "CHARGING" your own power into an already naturally charged item)., I was wondering..

Would it make sense to say that you would be more "awakening" or "arousing" the herbs natural power by prayer or speaking directly to the item. And since many herbs, etc. have diffrent uses, you would also direct the power to that specific alleged use ?

It seems to make sense to me, what do you all think?

(Could I possibly say "make sense" anymore in one post? LOL)

Hi, TwoOfCups,

We cannot provide that service, but you can go to Lucky Mojo['s Herb Magic web site and look at close-ups of each herb, one by one. The URL is

http://herb-magic.com

Good luck.

-----

Hi, ozmalicious,

What you're saying makes sense. You are working with the Spirit of the herb, root or curio itself and telling it what it's job is in the work you're doing. In the case of a mojo or other container spell, the sum of those parts, being told what to do and how to ''play nice'' together, is greater than their individual addition as they make together a stronger and more unified whole working to a specific, clear aim.

Squill (like opium poppies and several other other plant sources of opioid drugs) is easy to grow. I have grown it myself. I suggest you join a forum for gardeners, and ask there -- i am sure you will find help obtaining plant materials in a gardening forum. Good luck to you.

I am a worker and several months ago I called The Lucky Mojo Shop. I asked if you all have squill root and I saw that it was one of the ones listed in HOODOO HERB AND ROOT MAGIC. The response I got was just because it is in the book does not mean that we have it.

That's correct, queendee11 --

1. Some traditional hoodoo herbs are endangered species and it is against the law to harvest them in the wild, but you could grow them yourself. Adam and Eve Root and Gall of the Earth are in this category.

2. Some traditional hoodoo zoological curios are obtained through cruel and destructive methods, and we refuse to obtain them in traditional ways. The black Cat bone (which traditionally must be obtained from a Cat that is boiled alive) is one such item.

3. Some traditional hoodoo herbs and minerals are dangerous or toxic and not readily available for this reason, nor would we carry them if they were available. Squill root is one of these, as are liquid Mercury, Bluestone (Copper Sulphate),and Gunpowder. We have simply chosen not to carry them, as we do not want the responsibility of people poisoning or harming themselves with these items.

Good luck.

I have a question about Osha Root, think this is the right place.
1. Is there another name for it?
2. Native american's use this root but I am unsure if the family is umm...translating it's uses correctly as it has been passed down over the years or rather, family members.

One side is very Santeria the other very native american lol I have adapted to traditions from both sides and sometimes Im able to meet in the middle sorda-speak. There is a purpose I know but with some traditions and beliefs so close and some so far, I would hate to be in left field for its use when I should be in right...Make sense? I have searched her but cant seem to find anything, hence maybe there is another name....
Yes Cat I have your book and use it when ever in doubt but again not finding anything. Books AWESOME by the way, just sayin ;)

It seemsthat every herb, root and spice has a purpose.or meaning, when I saw catnip on the list I wondered what the Magickal properties of marijuana are (it isn't listed for obvious reasons).

Marijuana must have some Magickal associations.

What are they?

Caligula,

Marijuana, like most intoxicants, has a long history of religious and spiritual associations, but Lucky Mojo doesn't carry it. Perhaps an internet search will help you.

I am just now (a bit belatedly) starting the typesetting on Hoodoo Food! 2013 -- our FOURTH conjure cook book. We've got some very nice magical recipes in the kitchen this year, and my thanks go out, as always, to Sister Robin Conjure for getting it all together for me to work on.

notsoperfect7 / FeelingaPerfect7 / oneNonly --

You asked "is there any such spell that involves a chicken heart or chicken blood? I was just curious'."

That is one of the weirdest and most disturbing questions i have ever been asked on this forum.

You're ... just curious. What? You've got extra chicken blood just laying around in a bowl and want to know if you can use it?

Well, we are here to help you with purchasing and using spiritual supplies, not to help satisfy what seems to me to be a rather morbid curiosity,

i can tell you that there are more spells in hoodoo that involve killing frogs, killing ants, killing snails, killing black cats, klling mud dauber wasps, killing snakes, killing lizards, killing whippoorwills, killing mockingbirds, and killing bats than killing chickens -- and there are also spells that make use of parts of farm animals and wild game animals that have been slaughtered for food -- beef, veal, or lamb tongues; rabbit feet; possum bones; chicken feet and wishbones; and raccoon penis bones; for instance.

You seem to have confused spell-casting with religion -- when you wrote "the other type of magic does involve chicken sacrifice."

What "other type of magic would that be? There are hundreds of human cultures, each with its own internally consistent systems of magic.

There are likewise hundreds of human religions -- and since "sacrifice" is a religious term, it would appear that you were asking if hoodoo is a religion that requires animal sacrifice.

Then, when you question was answered, you denied that you had asked about "sacrifice." But you DID ask, right there in your post!

Anyway, as you were told, animal sacrifice is not a part or potion of hoodoo.

Why not?

Because hoodoo is a Christian form of folk magic, hence animal sacrifice per se is NOT part of the religious program of hoodoo.

Okay. Did that satisfy your curiosity?

If you want to learn more about the use of zoological curios in hoodoo, please purchase my book, "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic."

I have been an ignorance that I only used oils to burn candles. Then I got a few weird dreams in a row that I messed with herbs in the forest. I then had a psychic reading and the spirit guides of psychic told me that if I burn candle to do spells, I need to follow the instruction properly.

So, I would like to ask what herbs and roots are best for business ?

Thanks A LOT !!!

Some herbs that have been used with business success are:

Allspice
Cinnamon
Five Finger Grass

Just to name a few. Of course the type of business may incorporate some of these herbs as well as couple others. Be sure to check out Hoodoo At A Glance for a quick reference, and Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic for more detailed uses of herbs to work with. Best of luck.

sun369,

The Herbs that have been listed can be worked with to help increase business.

Also, be sure to read the Forum thread Spell-Casting for Online Business Ebay Etsy Web Site
for ideas of work you can apply to your online business.

Finally, if you have a copy of "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic," turn to the back of the book for the lists of herbs hrouped according to purpose. The same or similar information can also be found at this LMCCo. web page

Just wondering what herbs are best to use for Reversing all Witchcrafts that includes all Voodoo doll spells, black magic, all living things, all evil spirits and evil entities, all illnesses including a full body Eczema and all financial misfortunes, legal problems, relationships with employers, relationships with friends, love life, residency of the apartments?

I have been under attack daily and nightly for a year and a half now. She even attack me when I was trying to get Food Stamps. But I am done ignoring this hired Voodoo practitioner. i have asked my ancestors if they will be do the reversal candles with me and they said yes 4 times.

Please let me know what are the best herbs for reversal all witchcrafts other than Agrimony.
Thank you, and all responses are greatly appreciated.

I also would like to add, that if this is a recurring problem and you want to reverse all the mess. Then you can try a mirror box spell. It will keep everything evil they do bouncing back to them, hurting them each time they try to hurt you.
http://www.luckymojo.com/uncrossing.html

Also, don't forget to clean the mess they sent to you, by uncrossing yourself.

Hope this helps, Good Luck!

Hello, I checked the Lucky Mojo catalog and you all do sell Black dog hair. In the description it says "For black arts work or break up spells".

1) Would it be correct to use black dog hair in a "bend me over" conjure I want to work on someone? (My idea is I want them to follow me around like a puppy dog).

2) Or when the catalog said Black arts in the description does it mean black dog hair is for making someone "as sick as a dog" ?

3) My next question, besides black, are there any other colors of animals that conjures can use? Like a Red Cardinal's feather in a conjure to give love the ability to fly quickly to me- etc?

Any views would be most appreciated!

1) That's be okay. It need not be black for that purpose, just from a friendly and biddable dog.

2) Nope, you would use Dog throw-up for that! (Gross.)

3) Certain birds and animals have symbolism in hoodoo, others do not. Start by looking through "Hoodoo Herb and Rot Magic." Most often the use is determined by the anmial's behaviour, not its colour. For instance, Parrot feathers pf any colour are used to make people talk.

The info regarding the parrot feathers is quite interesting! I had never knew they had significance in hoodoo. And, a couple months ago, I just so happened to give a gift/ trick to a lover...it was a long beautiful feather from my Blue and Gold Macaw....:) Good to know, as I have a houseful of feathered babies...:)

Machito and magicinthemoment:

Open the book to page 209 and you will find the listing for all of the herbs of use to you in all psychic and divinatory work. With careful experimenting you will find that some of these resonate more with you than others will.

Happy reading and researching.

Hi :) I'd like to know if Love Herbs Mixture be good to use in a honey jar. It's listed as great for floor washes, spiritual baths, or a mojo bag, but it also seems like a good product to use in a love-drawing honey jar.
Thank you for always taking care of me, San Judas.

Mezan,

The Love Herb Mixture is great for the uses you described as well as for a honey jar or bottle spell. You can also make an oil out of it :)

You could go to a pet store and ask if they have any that a parrot has shed.

That being said, if you intend to cook with the honey from the jar at some point - you may want to choose individual love herbs since the love herbs mix are dressed with a fabulous combination of love oils (boy they pack a punch...).

I don't see where you're from, but fancy-style dance fans at American Indian pow-wows are often made from parrot feathers since the brighter, the better rules in that division. (Be prepared for holographic reflections from CD's used as the centers of feather bustles!). Check out any pow-wows. In your area or close by. Vendors there usually have them. Otherwise, eBay is a typical source.

If you go to a pow-wow, basic etiquette is: it is 'regalia' or an outfit, never a costume. No touching. No close-up photos without permission. Do not cross the arbor (dance arena) to get to the other side (it is blessed prior to the start of the event). If you are a lady and wish to dance in the 'intertribal' dance, bring a shawl to wear around your shoulders. Everyone is usually welcome to dance in that vent. The dancing is always clockwise circular. It is a very good experience, and respectful behavior is always appreciated, as usual.

If you cannot find one at a pet store, try an online Parrot Club or a forum for parrot fanciers. They moult, just like any bird does. The shed feathers are what we use in such spells.

Good luck!

Hello all,

I would like to know which herb is best for unbinding (to clear blockages and or open closed ways - not for love bindings) and if there is an specific oil or powder that would have a better effect regarding breaking strong bindings. I thought about Devil's Shoe Strings and Van Van oil but I'm not sure... Thank you very much.

Janis.

Janis

Devil's Shoe String is one of my favorite herbs; it is just the right thing for binding ... your enemies. By tripping up the devil (and his human allies) it can keep them out of your way while you go about your business.

Van Van is a traditional formula for road opening.

For "breaking strong bindings," though -- which we also call being "crossed up" or suffering "crossed conditions" -- I like Jinx Killer. Its most traditional use is to sprinkle it right on top of any nasty mess that has been thrown down for you, and then get rid of it.

For more general clearing-up of evil messes, whether or not you find any tricks laid down, you can use Uncrossing. Eucalyptus is also good for this purpose.
Hope this helps,

Hello all,

I used to keep my bones and roots in a box but found my Angelica root riddled with small holes and beetles merrily traipsing over it. I threw my herbs (Angelica, Lucky Hand, Bat Nut, Jezebel root, Orris root, nutmeg, and Master Root) into a zip top plastic bag then placed them into the freezer to kill whatever was still living in there. After a week I took them out and I noticed a few weeks later still more small brown circular beetles. I am at my wits end. I've grown together with these roots and separating them/keeping them in the freezer in a plastic bag between readings just does not sit well with me. I don't know what to do. Aside from buying entirely new roots and sealing them hermetically some how I am at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Good Evening, Daemongray,
That unfortunately doesn't sound good.
My advice to you is to buy new ones. We don't know what type of energies (and bacteria) the herbs and roots have infested your; "crop".
To avoid this in the future, have plenty of bay leaves around. Insects HATE bay leaf. And I keep mine in a dry place with a stable temperature.
I'm so sorry that tis happened to you.

I just had a thought ...
What will I need on hand for my herbs and roots to grind up fine if the situation or need arises ??
I notice some roots and herbs are larger and may need to be finer ground.

Will a electric bean grinder do ok?

Depending on the texture and fibrousness or woodiness of the herbs and roots, you may crush them between your hands; roll them under a rolling pin; use a wooden, stone, or iron mortar and pestle; or grind them in an electric grinder. Be sure to reserve these tools for non-food usage, as some herbs and roots used in magic are toxic when ingested.

The medical qualities of our herbs are described in this book, with traditional folkloric remedies for home-herbalists to try.

Greetings!

I understand the process of awakening/honoring herbs before use but I am wondering if they should also be spiritually cleansed beforehand? If so, what are some recommended ways of doing so?

Thank you for your time!

lousydowser,

I can't speak for others who will also no doubt have excellent advice for you, but I've never cleansed any of my herbs or candles prior to use and have never had any difficulty with my spell-work. It's not common practice in hoodoo to cleanse herbs - even candles and altar-tools are not systematically cleansed by all workers.

lousydowser,

Like the earlier posters in this thread who wanted to know how to "prepare" herbs by soaking them in Florida Water Cologne, or asked what to "chant" over them, or how to "charge" them, or how to "cleanse" them, or how to "awaken" them, or how to deal with their "ashe" -- you are not yet understanding hoodoo.

* It may be that you have come to the practice of hoodoo from another culture's form of folk-magic and that you are under the impression that the other culture's ways are used in hoodoo -- but the practices are not necessarily similar or the same.

* It may be that in these internet days, when many new texts are being published that claim to represent African American hoodoo, you may have been exposed to these ideas through a fictionalized or fabricated source which is inauthentic.

Either way, it's not your fault, but we do have to correct you, and you do need to understand us.

This forum is not about worldwide folk magic theories and ways of working. It is only about hoodoo, African American folk magic.

In hoodoo there is no institutionalized way to engage a "process of awakening/honoring herbs before use" and there is no requirement that they should also be "spiritually cleansed" before use.

What there is instead is a tradition of praying Biblical verses or extemporaneous prayers over the herbs as they are combined for use.

Lodestones may be baptized in whiskey, but they are minerals.

Herbs and roots are not placed into liquids unless one is making an alcoholic tincture (as for instance in whiskey or Florida Water) or a tea (by brewing in water).

As others have said, you would do well to learn more about this tradition -- just basic knowledge about its history, origins, and ways of working. The book i wrote, "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic," is a good start. You can read more about it here:

"Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic"
http://luckymojo.com/hoodooherbmagic.html

Here are some more free web pages, part of my online book "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice," which may also help:

Hoodoo History

and, in this forum --

Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
basic-understanding-of-traditional-afri ... 79fe43f4f7

And i will close with a quote by my husband, nagasiva yronwode, from the above-linked forum thread. He wrote:

"The idea that hoodoo is a "freestyle" way of working is a common misconception on the internet. Ultimately, its origination may have been among outsiders to black culture who want to subtly "possess" hoodoo. Such people may think that by blowing hoodoo's constraints and stylistic nuances apart into chaos, they can claim the remnant fractions as their own, but they are likely to be sadly disappointed when hoodoo's authentic culture-bearers laugh in their faces and refuse to accept their novel rearrangements of a well-known or traditional conjure trick."

So keep asking questions, lousydowser -- but do not be surprised if, while you are learning, somone like me or one of the moderators here tells you that the query is based upon a false embedded premise. WE mean no harm and only want to help.
