Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Somewhere I have a Hindu book which I am sure speaks very highly about taking the caul of black cats when they are giving birth. Does this come up in hoodoo? Seems like a more or less sustainable source for a potentially potent animal curio.
Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Nope, not at all. Black cat bones are said to e useful, but only a really monster would go about getting one. Just because it seems useful doesn't mean its hoodoo.

My parents are Hindu, I had to ask them about this one. They tell me the reference to the black cat caul is definitely not in the literal sense, at least not in any recent times, if ever. And I agree, only a monster would go about getting one.
Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Well, a caul could be gotten when the mama cat gives birth to kittens,if its the kind of caul I'm thinking of it won't really hurt anything. It usually comes out with the after-birth. As for the black cat bone, well I have one, gotten out of the cat in the old fashion way. I did not do it, nor ask for it, the bone is a few decades old and was one of a pair my teacher got when she was younger, and I got it as a gift a year back. I will say that it is very powerful but I would not tell anyone to actually kill a poor cat to get one.

This is very interesting. The black cat is a powerful symbol, both for good and bad luck, and a human born with a caul is believed to have second-sight. I have never heard of these two ideas being combined in quite this way. And what would it mean? Does the new kitten with the caul need to be black, or does the mama cat need to be black? Well, its not hoodoo and not on topic for the forum, but it is very curious indeed!

Well, obviously I was thinking the birthing process and overall cat's caul as at least somewhat more peaceably procurable, albeit slyly than even a chicken bone. I know the reference to looking for the opportunity is in a fairly recent source, a book on Rudraksha if I can find it. It wasn't very explanatory. I definitely think it is the mother cat that has to be black. I suppose one could breed Bombays. And of course, there probably is a law.

I've never heard of any law regarding cat afterbirth. It's just medical waste if a cat whelps at a vet, and it doesn't involve any cruelty. Though you have a point, you'd have to find a pregnant black cat, or breed them.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Whoever said that it would be monstrous to collect the caul or amniotic sac of a cat is not familiar with kitty birthing. Unlike larger animals born by standing mothers (e.g. the horse, goat, or sheep), the caul does not always automatically rip open when the kitten comes out. If the caul is intact, the kitten claws its way out while the mother cat helps by licking it open, releasing the kitten. Normally the cat will eat the amniotic sac to clean up the nest. If the cat is friendly, you can help free the kitten by gently collecting the caul -- but be sure not to pull on the kitten's umbilical cord region as you do so. Be very gentle. There is no law concerning helping one's pets give birth, other than the usual laws against animal cruelty. I should think that for magical purposes, both the mother and the kitten would be black. This is not hoodoo, of course. As noted, it is Hindu folk magic.
Hoodoo tradition concerning cauls is two-fold. Being born with a caul gives the person thus born second sight or precognition. Also, in a belief that enteed hoodoo through contact with English sailors (many Freemen of Color, prior to the Emancipation, were sailors), it is said that a person born with a caul cannot drown at sea or in water anywhere -- and that possession of a caul not one's own is similarly protective, which gave rise to a monetary trade in cauls in England. So a kitten born with a caul would, in hoodoo terms, be second-sighted and safe from drowning.

Thanks for the gentle touch on this process. I've worked with animals for years, at the Vet's, Museum-Native (Ohio) Live Collections, Bird Sanctuaries, but haven't been around much birthing. More around the other side, as to Euthanasia, which helps with those terrors(?) as well. I have had my own Black "Oscar" who very, very well may have been done in by the nasty neighbor, you know the one who used to hang the rodent glue traps in the trees in the garden to keep the squirrels away from the bird feeder. The vet told me that poisoning was unlikely, though robust he fell away only months after the man said he would "fuck him up" and my visit to the police precint to file a complaint. "Pray for those who despicably use us"? I think Oscar has been taking care of his own justice.
Now there is Louie, black and grey tabby and I've just adopted a fantastic 17 month old white and sand/cassia colored Amstaff/pitbull who came with the name of "Chase" and a heavily freckled red nose. Awesome spirit. Everyone loves him. 90% great in the dog run. At home its like Romper Room with an alligator.
Blessings

Hi, I also live in the UK and this time of year Devil's bit grows wild and in abundance around where I live until late September. If Cat, so wishes I could harvest the roots when the times right and post them onto her at the shop.

Hi I was wondering if anyone knew a link or any resource to know more about Doctrine of Signatures when it comes to herbs? I know that what they are used for has a lot to do with there shape, color, etc. but was it always like this? are there any conflicting views when it comes to using herbs? and did people learn by trial and error or just knew what to use back in the day? I hope I'm not asking confusing questions

Check out the archives of the Lucky Mojo Hoodoo Rootwork Hour (http://hoodoorootwork.blogspot.com/). Two in particular deal with this topic: "Doctrine of Signatures" and "Herbal Medicine and Magic." Both are older posts, so they are fairly late in the list, and both are very interesting. Enjoy!

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hi everyone!
I was wondering if there is a certain combination of things I can bake in cakes, cookies, or brownies to cast a love spell? I am working on several love spells, and the parents of the man whom I am doing my work on is very dear to me. I usually bake things for them, and they take it home to share with their family. I am sure the man I love eats some of it from time to to time, and he knows I baked the dessert.
What can I put in my desserts beside menstural blood that would bind him to me? Are there hoodoo recipes that I can make to give to the family that will encourage love, friendship, etc.?
Please let me know...Thank you!
hugs,
Brida

Quick answer: Get a copy of Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic (by our own Miss Cat) and look in the back of the book at the "Love Drawing Roots, Herbs and Minerals" lists. Any tasty recipe that contains any of these herbs can be adapted to love work -- mostly, as you said, with your bodily fluids, but don't forget fervent prayer!
It doesn't have to be menstrual fluid, either; bath water is also very effective -- and that means a spiritual bath with appropriate herbs and some prayer. If you want passion, throw a little sex magic into that bath.

Thank you Miss Michaele. I will get that book.
May I purchase the herbs and roots from LM, and integrate it in my baked goodies? I am just not clear as in to what I can use in the culinary medium, and what not to. I am not wanting to bake marijuana brownies, but I do want to use some magic in my baked goods to help this man and his family along with their feelings and actions towards me.
Anyone else?
hugs,
Brida

The best thing to do would be to call the shop if you have a specific question about the edibility of some of Lucky Mojo's herbs. Some things may be culinary grade and other items may not be. Some of the herbs and spices that work best (like cinnamon and sugar) you probably already have in your kitchenBrida wrote:Thank you Miss Michaele. I will get that book.

Certainly you can.
You can use any herb on that "Love Drawing Herbs" list that also appears in cookbooks, or that you know to be edible.

Thank you Bri and MissMichaele!
I will look on the "Love Drawing Herbs" list, and call the shop as well. My baked goods all have sugar in them, and well, some of them have cinnamon, nutmeg, nuts, and honey even. How do I make my sugar or other ingredients "special" as far as them becoming a magical ingredient in my baked goodies?
I am learning!!!

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
All of our herbs that are edible are either wild-crafted, organically grown, or of culinary grade. Herb edibility and toxicity varies by species, and that is your responsibility. We do not add any harmful chemicals to our herbs. In other words, if you buy oregano or ginger from us, they will be edible and of food grade, and if you buy calamus from it, it won't be any less of a stomache irritant than any other calamus, because the species is simply not edible, no matter who sells it.

Hi Brida. Since you are talking about working on him and his family for sweetening and warm feelings, what immediately came to my mind was baking something sweet in which cloves are a strong presence. (Then I starting thinking along the lines of pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, etc., which betrays my personal weakness for pumpkin. Still, though, it is getting to be that season!) I often cook things with special ingredients tailored to my purpose, and I simply make a little statement of intent when I'm adding a meaningful ingredient, asking that it help me and stating the property that I wish it to add to the dish.
Good luck! And let us know how it turns out.

Thank you Stephanie!!!!
I have the most AMAZING pumpkin and nut bars recipe. I will dig it out of my culinary school files. I will add a littl clove to it, and make it extra special!
This is gonna be a GREAT ONE!
I will let you know how it turns out! I will do it on the new moon, so as they consume the yummies, the moon will be waxing...and warm feelings will be growing with the moon's energy! It is coming together in my head, as I type!

This thread is fascinating. I am an avid gardener and have just finished putting in a bunch of sacred landscaping. I'm always looking for new things to plant. Of course the growing season is winding down here in New England, so this project will have to wait until spring.

Hi Everyone,
I was given the directions on making a sweet bath from a Houngan and the recipe calls for Saca Saca. I was told if I am not able to find this that I can substitute rosemary.
Is anyone familiar with this herb and have any idea who sells this in authentic form?
Have a wonderful weekend.

This forum is for LuckyMojo products, not general herbal/folk magic questions. We can't answer your questions about substituting one herb for another out side of the hoodoo tradition. This is the list of all the herbs LuckyMojo sellshttp://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatherbs.html. Ask the person that told you the bath maybe?

Hello Discordia,
I am aware of that. However I do know that herbs can have numerous names from different cultures. In this case I found out that Saka Saka is Yucca which Cat does talk about in her book. Thanks for the help though.

I have a Black cat bone that I was given by a worker in the South. It's a long bone from the leg. It has been fixed. Would it detract from its usefulness to cut it into several smaller pieces for use in mojo bags or other purposes, or must it be kept intact?
Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
This is a forum for LuckyMojo products, not a general hoodoo or folk magic forum and so I believe your question is out side of this forums scope as it has nothing to do with LuckyMojo spiritual supply's.

As HD pointed out, its kind of out of the purview of the forum. I would ask the worker who gave it to you what they recommend.bluesprof wrote:I have a Black cat bone that I was given by a worker in the South. It's a long bone from the leg. It has been fixed. Do just as you would for salt (which will "do what you tell it to do"): pray over it as you put the batter together.Brida wrote:How do I make my sugar or other ingredients "special" as far as them becoming a magical ingredient in my baked goodies?
Come to think of it, you could pray over the salt, too - tell it to ward off all meanness and misunderstanding.

I am a baker and I use a lot of cloves, cinnamon, and cardamon. These are edible and elicit love feelings, especially with all the sugar and molasses. I do a lot of love work with my baked creations. If you want passion, give him some gingerbread.

I'm planning on getting some glass jars to keep leftover herbs in, so how much (in ounces or milliliters, I'm not too picky!) is roughly the maximum amount of herbs that come in the $3.50 packages of leafier herbs, like for example, lavender flowers?
Thanks!
Thanks!

The amount of herb in a Lucky Mojo packet varies, because the cost of each herb is different. So each packet of herb is three dollars' worth, whether that's a couple of pinches or almost an ounce.

cool. As a professional cook, I'm interested in the hermetic attributes of different spices. Any help in where to look for these would be greatly appreciated. Also, are there any other luckymojo products that are edible that anyone has used, and what was the dish as well as intended effect?

All herbs and spices that are normally used in cooking/are edible will still be edible when purchased from Lucky Mojo. If you read through the website, you'll find lots of information about the various properties of herbs as they are ascribed by hoodoo tradition. Hermetic properties are kind of different, though. I would suggest you google up herbal magic, green witchery, or kithen witchery if you're really interested. If you want more info from a hoodoo perspective, but Cat's book.

Is there a method or spell to verify if a cat bone is actually a black cat bone?
and as for using it, how to bring back a lover, other than carrying it as a mojo?
can i rub the appropriate oil on it and can i place it beside my honey jar?
can i also place it with my candle spell?

The ones you can buy through disreputable occult shops are usually chicken bones, really they are just a scam to rope in money, if you want a real black cat bone you have to get it yourself, not a pleasant thing nor something I advocate anyone doing for any reason.

I'm looking to start an herb garden for things I need, and wonder where I can get seeds for such items, a lot of things are commonly available, but I havent found a place to by John the conquerer root seeds. Where can I look?
Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Sorry but this forum is for LuckyMojo products, not general hoodoo questions. But to try and give you some help High John comes from a kind of morning glory and you might be able to get a green house to order the plant or seeds for you. As long as you have the Latin name for it.

HD is right, we cannot advise you on how to order seeds and plants. However, I have found that in looking for hoodoo plants and herbs knowing the latin binomials really helps. You can browse any of these titles from lucky mojo and they will help you in your ordering, procuring, and identifying: http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatbooks.html#botanythetallstranger wrote:I'm looking to start an herb garden for things I need, and wonder where I can get seeds for such items, a lot of things are commonly available, but I havent found a place to by John the conquerer root seeds. Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
It is unlikely that you could get a black cat bone from a reputable dealer; even if you could, traditionally the cat would have to die a horrible death. Not only would it be immoral and illegal (animal cruelty), but there would be no guarantee that the cat was black or it was killed in the (extremely cruel) traditional manner.
In the unlikely circumstance that you actually have a black cat bone from a cat killed in the traditional manner, I think you should give it a decent burial with catnip. Ask the poor creature's forgiveness for the cruelty of humans and make a donation to an animal shelter.

As a side note,a bone from a black cat that died natural isnt special at all. Every single mention of getting a black cat bone makes it clear that the cats painful and horrible death is a key part of the bones power. So unless you know for a fact that they cat was boiled alive (either in a cemetery or at a crossroads depending on who you ask) it isn't worth anything. If you research a bit yes you might be able to identify it as a cat bone but you won't be able to tell if it was from a black cat or if it was gotten in the traditional way. If and that;s a big if it is a real black cat bone and if it was gotten in the "right" way, no simply setting it next to a honey jar wouldn't do much in my option.

Well, uh. (Forgive me animal lovers and workers here who are more of the white-end of the spectrum. I'm mostly black.)
Want the black cat bone? Go get it alive. Get a massive vat. Chuck cat into vat, half filled with water. You don't want to boil a drowned cat. Seal vat shut with holes for air and excess liquid to get out. Light it up.
Be prepared to be scarred for life psychologically and emotionally for doing it.

I have just discovered that my stock pile of herbs / curios from Lucky Mojo has accumulated to quite a substantial stash... (and I'm expecting more soon ..LOL )
My question is though... is there a shelf life on the various herbs and roots ? I realize the curios are on the lines of living forever type of thing ..but do the herbs and roots go by the same principal ?
Thanks so much, as usual, for all your help, assistant ..and for just being there for us who need these supplies

Hi there,
I have the same problem
In my opinion, I think as long as the herbs are kept in an air-tight container, and are not exposed to moisture or too much sunlight, they should be fine. You can probably toss out anything that is overly-faded in colour, moldy, or has lost most of its scent. I like to put a small pack of silica gel into the jars my herbs are contained in to wick away any moisture.
Hope this helps!

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hi all, sorry I'm not sure whether I am posting this in the right place... Please let me know if not.
I am very much a newbie to hoodoo (couple of months practice only) and I am seeing some weird things happening just in the past 2 weeks, around insects and spiders. I'll always look for a rational explanation before an esoteric one, so at first when I started seeing a lot more insects and spiders around than usual, I put it down to the start of the hot weather, but now things are getting odd..
A few examples:
1. As I settled down to start on my ongoing spellwork one evening, I felt like someone was watching me (but couldn't be). I looked over my shoulder and a big silvery spider was sitting on the wall just over my shoulder appearing to watch what I was doing.
Now I know some people say you shouldn't kill spiders, but I wasn't leaving that there! So yes I squished it, apologising out loud as I did, and heard myself say (didn't intend to) "If that was meant to be a good sign, sorry! But please... try a butterfly!!"
2. Couple of days after that I was driving to work, and had to drive right through an enormous swarm of bees right across the road! 2 of them hitched a ride on the windshield for about 15 mins, when I came to a 2nd swarm even bigger, and those 2 flew off into it. What the?
3. Last night my kids started screaming in the hallway, and I came around the corner to see a medium sized black spider lying on the ground with dozens of baby spiders flowing out of it. The mama spider appeared to be dead or dying (the kids didn't touch it, they'd just found it there). Once again, I killed them - sorry, but no way am I having them infest the house.
These are just the weirder examples... Can anyone suggest what's going on?
For what it's worth, the bees didn't unsettle me at all - it actually felt like a nice thing, if bizarre. The spiders though are making me uneasy. I have searched on LM, and found some interesting info, but still not sure how to take this.
Anyone who can help, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.

I'm sorry but this forum is to help people chose and use LuckyMojo products. Its not a general occult or folk magic discussion board. I can however recommend that you see a reader at the AIRR, many of them are well versed in omens and portents and should be able to divine what it all means.

Hello, after searching the herb magic website and the lucky mojo website I do not see anything about the use of acorns in hoodoo.
I keep being drawn to acorns and I am sure their must be a use but I am stuck to find one. A friend of mine from AIRR suggested jar spells. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

iv used them in love spells and frienship spells, this was a gypsie spell though, not hoodoo. what part of them draws you to them? that might indicate how to use them, look at other cultures associated with them which are also part of hoodoo to see how to use them in spells.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
I'm fairly new to hoodoo (more of a folk magick:Hex gal), but it stands to reason that pretty much everywhere oak trees grow, the magickal people of the culture revere both the oak and the acorn. In the Appalachias where there is a large Germanic influence acorns are regarded as protective, particularly against lightning -- acorns are strung and hung in windows and barns. Native Americans looked to the oak and the acorn for many staples, not the least of which was acorn flour. So you could associate it also with abundance. There is an old saying in So. West Virginia that you shouldn't "let the oak catch you" looking at the acorns. Even in these times, as disconnected as most people are from nature, I will still hear people discussing the acorn crop (known as "mast") because it plays such a large role in the well-being of wildlife.
To point: While I couldn't find any directly related hoodoo information regarding acorns, they obviously call to you and are rich in magick for many. Why not take it upon yourself to work the acorns into your altar or mojo? You can attempt to incorporate them into a Hoodoo type working by annointing your acorns with the oil that would correspond to your purpose. Personally, I would think they would be very appropriate for situations where strength and steadfastness are needed. They also tie in (for me) with veneration of my ancestors, perhaps due to my heritage. I gather some each year from the 4 different kinds of oak I have on my property and give them a place of honor in a wooden bowl on my hearth/home altar on the bar that divides my living room and kitchen. Like you, I am drawn to them...how could they be anything BUT magick? There's an OAK tree in there!

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
The use of acorns in magic and folklore is a European thing that never really got carried over into hoodoo. Nutmegs, which are imported, are used, as are Buckeye nuts, which are native ... but i have never heard an old time root doctor tell me to use an acorn.
Just because a plant exists, that doesn't mean that we are entitled to manufacture a use for it in hoodoo. If you want to learn about Acorns in magic, study the beliefs of a culture that does use Acorns in magic.
To Copperfox: You will not get far in this world or on this forum if you think you can "hoodoo it up" or give others advice to "hoodoo it up." That is rank bullshit. It is disrespectful to African American culture and history. It is Pat Boone singing Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti." On the other hand, if Acorns truly do have magical properties in your culture, then by all means respectfully use them as they would be used in your culture, whatever that is.

To Cat and All --
No disrespect was intended by my glib use of the phrase "hoodoo it up" -- I meant only to imply that the known annointing oils and such could be applied to incorporate the acorn into a hoodoo based practice if that was what one wished. I am a pragmatic person and seek results through many channels but certainly would never intentionally disrespect any person's culture or traditions -- especially not one I am in such awe of.
I do apologize if I offended anyone or gave an otherwise negative impression. In the future, I will be far more careful in my wording, as it is very easy for written correspondence to convey a tone not intended by the writer.
Humble apologies from red-cheeked me!
I went back and edited the offending post so that my intention would be clear to all that I truly mean no disrespect and am here as someone new to this tradition with an ardent desire to learn and make use of this amazing magickal system. As an aside, when I am doing my own work I often talk to myself and will often say "Well I hexed up the homeplace nice n' tight" or such after a warding -- I thought nothing of applying a similar wording and again apologize if it appeared irreverent. Like a foreigner in a new country I am bound to breech etiquette on occasion and do not mind having my faux pas pointed out to me so that I may apologize and not make the same mistake again.
In closing, allow me to say I am pleased and honored to be here and that I truly hope to never hear Pat Boone sing "Tutti Frutti." Thanks for the educational ranking, Cat.
