Pow Wows, Or, The Long Lost Friend
Pow Wows, Or, The Long Lost Friend
This is my new favourite magical book. If you haven't read it, it was written in 1820 and is a collection of German-American folk magic. The spells are mainly used for healing, and for practical concerns (farm animals, domestic issues) though there are some good ones for removing evil spells. Almost no equipment is required; they are almost completely verbal spells. VERY heavy of calling on Christian deities and such. Though I am not a Christian, I don't have any problem with that in this context.
If you can get the book, do. You won't regret it.

The book itself is actually used as a talisman by some folks, I know soldiers who keep a copy of it on their persons at all times, to protect against gun wounds.
LM doesn't carry it, sadly.

Yeah, there's a page in it that promises that nothing bad can harm you while you have the book in your possession. Lots of useful protective charms.

Manly Wade Wellman wrote a number of short fantasy stories (Silver John) that involve Appalachian culture and the Long Lost Friend. They're pulpy but worth checking out.

LOL.....Miss Bri beat me to it. I was going to also suggest the book of the Red Church. I had it suggested to me by Orion Foxwood and never have regreted it!
Re: Pow Wows, Or, The Long Lost Friend
RJLupin, it is a good book and as cognitivedissonance mentioned, it can be used as a talisman, it says so in the book. Yes, I agree this is a must have good read. Now I must add Miss Bri's recommendation to my wish list. Good recommendation RJLupin.

I love this book. It is powerful. I carry it as a talisman and was spared many times while carrying from danger. My great grandmother was a PA dutch healer or braucheri there are different spellings and she would never refer to herself as one. PA dutch are very proud people. This book was among her items, but written in ink. It says in the book that whoever carries it can not die an unnatural death. My great grandmother Sarah lived to be 103 she didn't have a birth certificate. My mother said that my great grandmother always lied about her age, and said she was 10 years younger, so we think she was actually much older than 103 years. I always carry this book. I take it in my purse wherever I go. There are some of the most powerful protection prayers in its pages that I have ever seen. Following the advice on Miss Cat's pages on how to make a mojo bag, along with herbs & curios, I only use prayers from this book. Traditionally pa dutch healers use white cloth (white flannel sold at LM is great) and sew up the ends with red string. That is how I was taught, to make a protection or healing bag which is usually all they make. Or, I write a himmel brief to go within. This is a must have!

As someone with PA Dutch ancestry, I have been dying to get my hands on a copy of this book.
I've never heard of The Red Church, so I must check it out.

Hunting Magic
I was recently asked by a co-worker if I knew anything he could do that would help him with deer hunting (for the record, he only hunts for food, not sport, and the deer population here in upstate NY is fairly overpopulated) and give him some good luck.
I did some searching around the forum and couldn't really find anything, I found some things on fishing, but not hunting. So after that I went to some of the older books that I have and I found something kind of neat. I guess hunting isn't all that popular of a topic, but I figured that it might be worth sharing just in case anyone comes on here that is also looking for it.
If you look in the table contents of Pow-Wows, or Long Lost Friend by John George Hoffman there's a section called 'Hunting Talismans.'
Hope this post helps someone!

oh, i still remember The Red Church! It is not too difficult to notice the alchemical symbolism at work here, most notably the intense focus on the perfected rubedo phase.
