I will see you all there that can come. cat is love by so many and to help her celebrate her 60 birthday, this will be wonderful, with her family and friends to give cat honor the queen of HooDoo. now her favorite food is chocolates and coffee, so we'll all look forward to her birthday party.

Ms Robin

(You're telling secrets on me, Ms Robin! :-) It's true that a morning cup of coffee and an evening cup of tea, accompanied by chocolate, is what keeps me going, but in between times i do like a bit of sweet corn or avocado or goat cheese and apples or ... hmmm... i think it's getting to be dinner time! Anyway, i sure do hope to see you here, dear Ms Robin, Saturday, May 12th! Come early, stay late! --cat)
If you need a helping hand, look me up on AIRR

Hi Cat,

How about cheese cake. I know how to make an awesome Amaretto cheese cake.
Though I do know how to make lots of chocolate desserts as well. In my cooking
class I had the best chocolate truffles. :) (of course my idea wasn't novel,
I just made my truffles like my favorite flavor of Godiva truffles.) I think
I might still be in a sling from shoulder surgery (April 23rd, my 3rd
shoulder surgery from a car accident. I could have definitely used some strong
court spell work for that fiasco), so I may have to instruct my husband of what
to do to make some goodies.

Jennifer Line #901

(Cheesecake sounds wonderful. And if you can't bring cheesecake, just bring your own sweet surgically repaired self and your husband and we'll have a good time anyhow. --cat)

Greetings and choice salutations happy hoodooers. I look forward to
meeting and greeting you at the Lucky Mojo Curio Company for cat's
birthday bash and open house! I will be in the Forestville area for
about three days before flying to Canada.

And, all my West Coast students, Dr. K. is a resident of Florida, which makes this is a rare chance to meet one of conjure's living legends -- so get your plans in order and come out for the event. You will be doubly glad you did. --cat)

That does it. I'll be there too.

I'm reluctant to expose my aroma-sensitive husband to the heavy dose
of botanicals he got last year, though, so if anyone will be passing
near a BART station on The Day, please email me off list. I'd be happy
to buy gas for anyone who could give me a lift.

Hi all,

I'm combining the topics as they both relate to what I want to
say. The Lucky Mojo Curio Co. is definitely the best shop of its
kind I've ever been to, as well, and I've been to ones in NOLA,
SF and some in the UK. When you walk into the store there are
candles lit in different areas for different types of work,
pictures and names with them. I've seen cat picking out a
lodestone for a customer, weighing it and picking out the best
one for the person in the weight they wanted and one she thought
would suit them. You don't have to worry about what you are
getting there. All the work that they say they do on people's
behalf, they do it. This is one thing that makes me really like
cat and her shop (and of course all the nice people who work
there).

The whole roots are great. I really like that you can go in and
look at different ones, and be able to pick the one that feels
right for you. I'm sure we've all had that feeling, when you are
looking through a bunch of things, and you just come upon the one
that just feels right, you may keep looking, but go back to that
one. Of course if it feels that right, I'd almost hate to send it
in on a homework assignment. :) Of course, I'm sure there is the
one that feels right for homework as well. I think this is one
thing I am gaining from this course, getting the feeling, using
my intuition...it's not all about ritual and using the proper
ingredients. There are so many things to choose from for each
situation that I go in with a list of what I want to look at then
I pick the one I feel is right. Does this make sense? I hope so.

I can't wait to meet some of you on May 12th. My husband is going
to attend with me, and actually remembered to ask for the day off
when I asked him to ask for Mother's Day off. He really likes
going to Lucky Mojo, too. :) I'm sure Sunday will be a big event
in cat's life as well, it's Althaea's first Mother's Day. Cat,
are they going to be there for the party? I can't wait to at
least see a picture of the little guy. :)

Oh, and cat, my husband wants to know if we can bring the puppy
with to the party. No biggie if she can't. I'll just get a puppy
sitter, which I'm sure my cousin's daughter would be gleeful to
do. :)

Jennifer Line

(Thanks for the kind words about the shop. Several folks have
mentioned bringing dogs to the party, and indeed, we have a
dog, we love dogs, and DOGS ARE WELCOME as long as everyone
understands that

(1) the property is not fenced and borders on a road; you are
responsible for your dog's road-safety.

(2) there are outdoor cats on the premises and dogs who chase
cats are NOT welcome unless leashed.

(3) visiting dogs may run unleashed subject to the above
provisos, but you hould bring a leash in order to forestall
or control any unexpected "issues" that may arise between
specific dogs, cats, or people.

Additionally, we do have shady areas where dogs can be tied out
or left in parked cars (weather permitting) and we also have
a dog pen near the shop available for use.

Thanks for understanding.

Well Hello every one it's Ms. Robin it's time for me to tell another
little secret on our Queen of HooDoo Ms. Cat in her Early years Cat
love A good old fashion jam session. so it's her day bring out your
instruments bring what you have guitar, tambourine, spoons your
washboard and your bongos and horns where in for a good time. I would
specially like to thank DR.Kioni for coming a long ways to celebrate on
this special Day. My God Bless and may the sprit be with you. Ms. Robin

(Hey, Robin! I just wanted to thank you for that mention -- i do love music and i think it would be very fine if folks who like to play and sing brought instruments, drums, and what-all to the poarty. I also have some news on the Potluck Food Front: My sister Holly Greenwood will be bring a HUGE Princess Cake in sheet cake form for my brithday cake, so don't anybody else feel like cake is needed. Robin, i know, is making her famous Chicken Wings, and Macaroni and Cheese, and, i hope, greens. I think that Don Roach is going to provide Beans and Rice. But for those of you who do not cook, just bring your own lovely selves, okay? We will have plenty of food and drink on hand.Starting Monday, when i am back home (i am checking in right now from my daughter's house in Berkeley), i will be trying to clean up the old homestead and get things in order for the party. Next weekend, April 28th, siva and i will be driving the Mojo Car in the Sebastopol Apple Blossom Parade, too. Also, the call is out: anyone with Black Cats -- please brush your kitties and bring the combings to the party! We are in great need of Black Cat Hair and will barter it for stuff in the shop. Oh, and one other thing -- we need a ride for Diana Merrill, who lives in San Francisco and wants a lift up and back. If any of you live in the City and are planning to attend the party, and can give her a ride, please call the shop and we will givve you her phone number so you can contqact her directly. Thaanks! cat)

Hi cat,

I will be sure to brush out my babies. Three of my cats are black. I have
another that's black & white, so I'm not sure if you would want fur from her
black spots, though I would think you'd probably only want fur from the solid
black cats. I had been keeping a pile of fur, but I'm not sure where it is, or
if it got thrown away. So, I'll look for that, and brush the heck out of my
little girls. :)

I am coming in from Las Vegas, and I think my friend
Alison will be joining me on the drive. Do you have
any friends in the area who own a bed and breakfast or
a small hotel? I am looking for some place simple and
inexpensive. Thank you for any suggestions.

I am so excited to be meeting everyone at last!

(Hey, it'll be great to see you all. I do not know anyone in the lodging business -- but there are some nice places on the Russian River that are not too upscale, like the Creekside Inn, and there is a big ol' Holiday Inn in the nearby town of Sebastopol. --cat)

I won't be able to make it to the party, alas :-( , but I know a cat who
is very large, very black, and very shaggy. I can probably get some
pretty substantial combings and mail them in to the store. Would that be
helpful?

With my best,

JMG

Hi Cat,

I am surprised no one has brought this up, but where are we all going to
park at the Lucky Mojo? If I remember correctly, you do not have a lot of
parking spaces. Very curious about this.

See you May 12,

Mary Traversi

(Good point1 Most people park either on the side streets close by (a block or two walk) or at the large church parking lot on Center Street. Very little parking on our grounds! --cat)

Cat, if we're not able to make your party would you still like the black cat hair mailed to you in zip-lock baggies? I can also send black dog hair as well. I have a black cat myself, and my neighbor has 2 black cats and a black lab. When I brush my cat outdoors, her cats always come over for their turn and eventually the lab wants his share of course. I could start using two different brushes to keep all the hair seperated for you and could mail it when I have collected enough to send. Just let me know, I definitely wouldn't mind, and no batering needed, my gift to you for all the help that you provide everyone.

Hi happy hoodooers. It behooves me to postpone my much anticipated
trip to LMCC for cat's birthday and open house. I was looking forward
to meeting all of you. cat, I will contact you off list to determine a
future date for my arrival.

Dr. K

(Aaaawwww. That's too bad. I am sure that there is some important reason for it, but i was really hoping to meet you at last. I will be patient and wait for the time that suits you. Sigh. -- sad cat)

(Howevwer, in the meantime, plans for the May 12th party rock on without Dr. K.! We now have LIVE MUSIC on board in the persons of Corvus Aycock and his friend Chris! (I think i got that friend's name right.) They are promising lots of cool hoodoo music, and i am very excited and happy to know that they will be playing for us. I intend to get Ferne to sing, too. --happy cat)

Oh NO! I was so looking forward to meeting you, Dr.
Kioni, as are many of the shopfolk. In California
speak...BUMMER!

That would be Corvus and George, Cat. They play very
eclectic music from Blue Grass to Mexican love songs,
surf music to old standards. Ferne sings? Really? Boy,
that'll cost ya! ;)

Blessings,
Ferne

(Sorry 'bout the name of Chris for george. I am not that good with names -- but i am really looking forward to this musical wonder at the party ... and yes, i have a feeling that you will sing, Ferne. I am psychic... I am not only psychic, i am tel-sentient. You are getting sleepier and sleepier, Ferne. Your eyes are slowly closing. You are drifting back ... back... back to your misspent youth in Southern california. When you awaken you will remember all the lyrics to "Little GTO" by Ronnie and the Daytonas and will be moved to sing them aloud. And-a one, and-a two, and-a ....!!!!! --cat)

OK my darlings, I've been quiet here, sorta crying in my wine,
thinking about what I'm gonna miss. So I am sad DrK won't be there
for Cat's 60th, but I won't either, so I'll just start putting my
head on a trip when we can ALL be together again and focus on that!
In the meantime, my girl, Ferne...Little GTO, Lordy that's hard to
take...how about a little 'Blue Bayou"? Now I can hear that deep
bedroom voice beltin' some of that. How old are you anyway?

hi there!

my grandmother's birthday was in May (8th) and it occasionally fell
on Mother's Day also, which was like a double-hit! like birthdays
around Easter, there are at times overlaps and conflicts.

as a dedicant of some duration to a Mother Goddess
and a faithful partner for a mother (of a mother!) i
can completely understand this. marvellous, and
thanks for explaining.

ya want we should plan to invite folks around when you
come up later so that the wonderful opportunity of your
presence might not be missed? you should receive the
audience which is your due, my friend! :) do tell!

I was a bit bummed out because my business is more productive on the weekends, and I couldn't come either, but nothing says I can't plan a weekday - assuming you're going to be there a weekday or two - visit to Lucky Mojo in a month or so!

Just some videos I thought I would share with the gruop.
I'm not sure if they were already posted but I thought I'd share anyway. Hope you enjoy.

- early 1960s version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hm-4DPhCJYg
(Lyics: http://www.luckymojo.com/bluesmojohandhopkins.html )
I love what he says in the very start of this video.

(Tha's a good one -- and here is ANOTHER take of
Lightnin' Hopkins - Mojo Hand

Muddy Waters - Got My Mojo Workin'
- Newport Jazz Festival

Junior Wells and Buddy Guy - Hoodoo Man Blues

Harlem's Black Magic (March of Time, 1930s)

Rare footage that i got -really- ecited over!

(This is incredible! The racism is ill,
and the middle section about Haiti is
off-topic, but the rest of this newsreel
story is ABSOLUTELY-MUST-SEE!!! --cat)

"How to make a voodoo doll"

(Not an instructive video, but an artisan's
slide show with techno music - cat)

Hope you enjoy the videos!

(Thanks, Mike, for giving us the benefit of your research at youtube. The March of Time video is the real find of the bunch, in my opinion -- you can even see Rajah rabo's conjure shop!!!! I mean, it is right there! We sell some of the old Rajah Rabo dream books, and it is so cool to see his shop signage! --cat)

Hi cat and all,

My inbox is overflowing and I'm too spent to catch up at the moment. I
had shoulder surgery two weeks ago (I get the stitches out tomorrow)
for the third time, so needless to say, I haven't checked my e-mails.

I was wondering if there were any last minute details of Saturday's
party, like where to park and what not. I remember it starts in the
morning, what time exactly, I think it was 9 something, which is early
for me :) Anyway, I am looking forward to meeting those of you whom I
haven't met yet, and looking forward to seeing you all again.

Bellatrix (my Chihuahua puppy) is excited about going, she's a puppy,
she's always excited. I know to bring her leash (or two in case I want
to let her on the longer one). I still have to cook a cheesecake, but
thankfully I am healing well from the surgery, so I'll be able to do
that. I can't wait to meet all of you and wish cat a happy birthday. :)

Jennifer Line

(I am glad you asked, Jennifer. I am in the middle of moving furniture and cleaning up for the party and am innundated with stuff to do. You know what my office looked like after we tore it apart, right? Well, it is almost ... almost! ... back to normal. And the folks at Old Town Furniture in Santa Rosa are to thank for that. I am glad you are recovring well from the shoulder surgery -- i know that has been an ongoing situation for too long -- and it is really time to get it fixed! Anyway, we open the shop at 9:00 am, as always, so that's when the party officially starts, but i don't expect anyone to show up then unless they are planning to hang out all day. The food will be set out noonish, and live music sets will be at 2:00 and 4:00 pm. Oh, as for where to park -- well, we don't have much space here, that's for sure. Last year most folks parked in town and walked to the shop. There is parking at the church on Center street (NOT the little white Assemblies of God church, the other one, with the parking lot on Center Street) or on Front Street. Folks who come for the open house will receive a gift book, by the way... a signed copy of "Not in Kansas Any More" by Christine Wicker. I look forward to seeing you, and Bellatrix! -- cat)

Hello,

My name is Cindy Lipton and I feel like I am starting on a new
adventure. I live in Crockett with my Blues Musician husband, 2
teen-age kids, and 3 dogs. I have been a writer, a teacher, and a
scientist for my working life and have always been drawn to the South,
particularly to the Mississippi Delta and New Orleans, where the Blues
come from. We have a small place in New Orleans and try to go there as
often as possible. I am excited about joining the Hoodoo Rootwork
Course and am interested in the historical and cultural origins of
the tradition. I'll see some of you in Forestville on Saturday.

(Hurray! I would love to get to hang out with you, as we share many interests. If you can bring your blues musician husband (and his instruments!) to the open house, so much the better. We will be having live music and there is always room for more blues! --cat)

I hope it will be "or so" so that this young swede will get
another chance to party with the Hoodoos and get my share of
the magic dust other than May 12.
:-D

cat and gang,

I know we have covered this before but maybe this should be
revisited; I know that Don (Your good friend, cat) is making red
beans and rice.

(Actually, i think he is making pork roast now. I dunno what he's doing! He's laying flagstone, that's what he's doing! --cat)

Robin is making greens, right?

(Yes, greens, and bar-b-q wings and mmm. . . maracorini and cheese. I think. --cat)

Who else is bringing/cooking for Saturday? (OH the sighs of not having Sindy Todo's cooking this year...sniff, sniff)

(My sister Holly is bringing the Birthday Cake. Jennifer Line is bringing homemade cheesecake. I am supplying all of the snacky things -- chips, cheeses, fruit plate, etc. --cat)

I have one of the hoodoo students visitng just for cats party (zazumaifa) all the way from Tenn. and I guess we would need to know what to whip up. Are we going with a traditional southern food thing or more continental.

(Southern!!!!!!!!! --cat)

Who is brings libations and juices?

( We have wine on hand and i will also supply healthful fruit juices. Anyone wanting to bring soda or beer in a cooler is cordially invited to do so. --cat)

Do we need a paper products person?

(I think i am doing that. --cat)

Like one always worried mother, how many is coming so we have enough
to go around?

(I have no idea how many are coming -- from 20 to 50? Something like that. To me a potluck means bringing enough of one dish to feed youself and one other, so that there won't be too little to go around or too much left over. --cat)

(Thanks for asking this, Jackie -- i hope it all maks sense. --cat)

I am back at work (Tuesday) and the first thing i want to do is to
thank everyone who helped make my 60th birthday party on Saturday so
much fun!

Thanks to the efforts of many wonderful people, the church was
finished on time, we had lots of food, there were flowers, presents,
surprise visitors, and live music, and i enjoyed myself greatly as the
"birthday girl." About 75 people showed up during the course of the
day and the festivities lasted well into the night, with the final
guests leaving just before midnight.

I will be sending private mesaages of thanks to all who took part for
their particular contributions to the festivities, but i just wanted
to publically thank you one and all for the favours and good wishes
you have so generously showered upon me.

Slightly overwhelmed still,

Miss cat

Holly Benner (#60) and I flew down
from Texas to join the festivities and we
had a great time!! Everyone at Lucky
Mojo is so very nice and Cat is
amazing. :)

I'll post a link to pictures sometime
in the next couple days. No pics of
Cat though, she didn't want to be photographed.

Big hugs to all!

(Thank you, Niki, for coming all the way from Texas to make the day something really extaordinary for me. I look forward to seeing a link to your pictures, and i am sure that others will as well. Thanks! --cat)

Happy Birthday, Cat!

Here´s some music to accompany the whish. The most common and
traditional traditional swedish birthday song:

Ja ma hon leva,
Ja ma hon leva,
Ja ma hon leva uti hundrade år,

(Yes, may she live
yes may she live,
yes may she live for a 100 years)

och när hon har levat,
och när hon har levat
och när hon har levat uti hundrade år

(And when she has lived
and when she has lived
and when she has lived for a 100 years)

Ja då ska hon skjutas
ja då ska hon skjutas
ja då ska hon skjutas på en skottkärra fram!

(yes, then she will be shot [same word as for pushed]
yes, then she wil be shot [pushed]
yes, then she will be shot [pushed] on a wheelbarrow forward)

And then we say:
A fourfold hurray for Mrs Catherine!
Hurra! Hurra! Hurra! Hurra!

[actually the fourfold hurray was illegal to give any one else but
the king in the old days. Commoners had to settle for threefold.
Nowadays all are royalty over here it seems. ;-)]

Congratulations and best regards

(YOW! That makes "Happy Birthday to You" sound positively amateurish! Thanks for the good wishes, and i hope to see you soon, when you arrive for your apprenticeship! --cat)
