Thanks for understanding, FiachnaRose.

Hang out around here a while and get to know the other folks who have taken the course. Their names are colour-coded, so you can recognize them when they post:

Black - Student
Blue - Graduate
Pink - Graduate and Apprentice
Navy - Graduate and member of Hoodoo Psychics
Purple - Graduate and member of the Association of Independent Readers and Rootworkers
Green - Graduate (and perhaps more than one other of the previous) plus Forum Moderator
Red - Graduate (and more than one other of the previous) plus System Administrator

Try to connect with some of those folks and friend them on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, too -- not to hit them up for free readings or advice, but to see what they post about their practice of rootwork (some do, some do not) and to try to connect with local practitioners in addition to grazing the internet.

I look forward to getting to know you.

Thanks so much, Miss cat! :)

I'd never thought about reaching out to the folks here on Facebook, but that's a great idea, and I'll do that. I'm terrible with social media, but I'd love to connect with other people interested in rootworking and conjure.

I'd checked into people locally first, hoping to find a little community here in Portland, OR, but to my dismay all we seem to have (out in the open, at least), are Wiccans and eclectics. I actually recently started going to a black Baptist church in my area, hoping to meet some like-minded folks, and make some new friends :). You never know when you'll meet someone who's granny taught them all about "that stuff!"

Thank you for the tips! I look forward to getting to know you as well!

Hi, FiachnaRose --

There is a reason you will not find many black practitioners of conjure in Portland, Oregon. It is not that they are not "out in the open," either. According to the latest US Census, self-identified "White" people make up 87% of Oregon's population and self-identified "Black or African American" people make up only 2.2%. We know that, due to the history of slavery, the percentage of Black people is highest in Southern, formerly pro-slavery states, and gradually diminishes as one moves West. But compare Oregon with the most recent census reports -- a national percentage of 13% "Black or African American" people, or neighboring California's 6.5% Black or African American population -- and you will see that Oregon is a statistical anomaly.

So, ask yourself the next questions:

How did Oregon get that way?

Did black folks just decide that they didn't like the beautiful climate, fertile valleys, rushing rivers, and magnificent forests of Oregon?

Or were they somehow excluded from entering the state?

Please read up on Oregon's shameful history of racial exclusion. Here are some articles to get you started:

Black Exclusion Laws in Oregon
https://oregonencyclopedia.org/articles ... 5qoT4UflyQ

Oregon black exclusion laws
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_bl ... usion_laws

The Racist History of Portland, the Whitest City in America
https://www.theatlantic.com/business/ar ... and/492035

I think that after sitting with this history and considering its implications, you will understand why the relative absence of conjure shops in Portland has little to do with Oregon's Black practitioners feeling reluctant to be "out in the open" about folk magic, but a lot to do with a history of systemic racism in Portland.

Thank you for this. I've only recently sort of had my eyes opened to the racial reality here, i.e. the basically forced migration of black folks from their homes in North Portland to the East, away from their churches and community centers, shops, etc. And, like you said, that's only scratching the surface :(.

I have also heard recently that people have been actively leaving because of these issues, as well as treatment by the local P.D. There's an exodus happening. It's a mess, and it's absolutely our loss. And, of course, many white folks here turn a blind eye and point to their "BLM" bumpersticker, like they aren't participating in the gentrification that's a massive part of the problem.

I will read more and learn, and, like you said, sit with that. It's also my goal to be of service to the community that's still here, as best I can. That's part of why I'm so interested in learning about conjure, not only because of my family's longstanding southern roots and the fact that it "feels" right to me, but because I feel like if I can help people that feel ostracized here, I'd very much like to.

Anyway, thank you very much for the links! I'm just beginning my learning on the subject, and am very grateful!

FiachnaRose --

Yep, they may not teach the history of the Black Exclusion Laws in Oregon's public schools, but the demographic results are there for all to see.

Your seeking out and joining a Black Baptist church is a measure of your regard for the cultural roots of hoodoo, and i appreciate that greatly.

Yep, they definitely skipper that part, but it's definitely making everything sort of snap into place in my brain, knowing that.

And thank you, Miss cat! I definitely want to be a part of and learn from/love on the people I hope to be of service to. And like yoyou've said before, if you're a guest in someone's house, you'd better say "Amen" when they say grace! I definitely try to take that to heart.

Hi FiachnaRose!

I live in a very tiny farm town about a half hour South of you :). I've been unofficially practicing Hoodoo around here for about 10 years or so and I can help you out with information and with finding who you need to find around here. You won't find anyone in Portland who will talk about it, exactly as Miss cat said, and for the reasons she said as well. This actually made me admire Miss cat a thousand times more, because those things she told you, are only learned if someone persistently looks for the information. It's well hidden, as you've come to find out. I only learned about it because my best friend for the last 15 years is Black and I'm Hispanic and while we've both experienced or seen racism toward ourselves and/or family members.. Her experiences were different. It took us until we were college room mates before we ever thought to research it and, Oh my God, what we found was nauseating. But there are a few black practitioner communities here and there. You'll find them more readily if you know where to shop. As far as churches, I've found two in the entire state of Oregon that have somewhat of a Hoodoo community, but one was on Mt. Hood (so not easily accessible) and one was in far SE Oregon (also not easily accessible, but because of distance and no facilities nearby).

I don't know how to find you, but I'll look around on Facebook. I'm really good at finding people, and usually that's creepy and frowned upon but once in a blue moon, it proves useful to someone other than myself :)

FiachnaRose and ScorpioKate --

About 17 people from Portland, Oregon, have enrolled in my course and 3 of them have graduated. If you sign up for the course, you will have access to their names and the email addresses (but not the street addresses) they had when they signed up, or more recently, if they stayed in touch with me over the years. They may be willing to share their knowledge with you.

ScorpioKate, thanks for the info and for reaching out! I'm Fia Rose on Facebook, and would love to connect.

My cousins are latino and asian, and growing up I remember my male cousins always being hassled by the police for zero reason. My cousin Armando was stopped by the cops when he was 14 and riding his bike in our quiet neighborhood...because they assumed he'd stolen it.

I'm always grateful to learn about other people's experiences, because it's so, so easy to go through life with blinders on without even realizing they're there.

I'm glad to meet you, and excited to (hopefully) meet those graduates from the area someday! :)

Hello, Rose_Joy,

I wish i knew who you were, but your user-name doesn't ring a bell and i can't find anyone in my database who has the email you used to sign up here. I do remember your posts here recently, and i do not recall getting to know a prospective student with that life situation.

However, if you are a student of mine, please contact nagasiva on Facebook or via email, as would have been explained to you when we had our pre-course interview, and let him know your student number so you can post your introduction in the private student group here at the forum and get your Student Practitioner avatar. Thanks.

See you on Saturday.

Rose_joy --

Prospective students cannot actually buy the course book until i interview them and we agree on terms and conditions. The order button will work, but the card won't be charged. I only enroll students whom i know by name and have spoken with and developed a connection to. Have you made all of the required purchases? Are we friends on Facebook? If not, try me for friendship is a good way to start. Thanks!

Hi, folks --

This week, nagasiva and i have been going over the list of people who have stated that they want to take my course.

We started with 40 names on the list, and we have been checking off who has purchased what, who has become a member of this forum, and who has dropped off the list due to lack of contact or failure to purchase the required books and supplies after one year without contact.

Our software and database programming updates have streamlined the process -- THANK YOU NAGAIVA! -- and we are reaching out by phone and email to every person on the Prospective Clients list.

To all of you who have been thinking about about taking the course, there is no better time than this to move forward with your plans.

Thank you too, all my students, for making this program possible.

It's been a long time trying to buy all books and required purchases but I finally did it and going to buy the course book soon! A tip for others, buy the books first to read and learn over time then when making required purchases try starting out with protection and money related products first so you can do simple magic to protect yourself and have more money available to make more purchases! I feel like it helped me.

'm interested in taking your hoodoo course. I have been involved in craft-related activities and herb work all of my life, and have been drawn to and studying hoodoo the past year. I've been reading tarot for awhile, and am now learning to read and to scry regular playing cards. I am particularly interested in scrying and also doll work -- helping people from a distance when they might not be able, or feel comfortable, attending ceremony.

I'm working through the requirements for your course and hope to apply in the spring.

Hello Cat! My name is Jesse Rodriguez and I’ve been studying and making all the required purchases. The only purchase I have left is the course book. I hope you add me to that list! I tried to add you a long time ago to Facebook but it wouldn’t let me and so I’m following you instead. I did add Nagasiva but he said I’d want to speak to you instead. If you like, we can arrange that though not sure what are the best steps here.

Hi, Jesse!

You have indeed been added to the prospective students list. I do not see, however, that you have made all of the required purchases. For instance, i do not see that you ordered Chinese Wash, a packet of repelling / harmful incense powders, or an herb mixture, et cetera. Is it possible that you have two client records that ought to be merged? I show 40 customers in the city in which you live...

RSVP!

Thanks for checking, possibly because I placed the order yesterday that you may not see it, also I don't believe my card was charged yet, I only have one account. Order number 110795 is a really big order including Chinese wash, the herb mix, bath crystals... I may be at a lack of incense powders though, I have crown of success and John the conqueror. I'll put that order in when I order the book, got to wait for some cash flow first. I love incense, if I spend too much time shopping for incense here I may end up with a whole lot of incense and no book! lol. So happy to have ended up at LM, you made my journey a lot shorter! Let me know if I'm missing anything specific.

So I made the list woohoo! If I buy the course book and the remaining items what am I supposed to do next? I know you still need to meet me, I guess I'll save you the click clack of the keyboard since you'll probably explain it to me when we meet virtually. By the way I'd love to take a trip to see you in person and the rest of the crew.

Hi, Acejay -- Once your order is downloaded and charged. we will see where you are at. The way it works is you first buy all of the required materials and the required reading books. You cannot and should not order the course book yet -- it just gets in the way of the flow. We will track your progress, and when you have all of the requirements met, you and i will talk for about an hour, and then you can make your final decision to order the course book. See full details here:

http://luckymojo.com/mojocourse.html

And thanks for your interest.

How exciting! :) I hope I am up for consideration, and just wanted to poke my head in to say "Me, please!"

I'd just like to say that I do have all of the recommended reading books and have been studying away, as well as trying out all the supplies I've purchased. I know I'm still a relative newbie to the forum, though, and am enjoying getting to know everyone and learning from the group.

Hello, FiachnaRose --

We seem to have a problem tracking you in our database. This is no big deal as far as regular customer service and order fulfillment, but it makes it impossible to follow what you have purchased in terms of required materials. We have

Client #E72785 first ordered on 6/1/2015
Client #E87142 first ordered on 7/31/2018

one email
one phone number
two billing names / two shipping names = a total of three different names
two street addresses
two cities
one state

I am pretty sure that both of these are you -- but i cannot merge the records until i know that they are both you, and which is your actual name and address. Did you recently legally change your name when you renewed your credit card?

Just sign me,

Miss cat, I did recently change my name, a couple of years back, and didn't even think about that causing a problem, but duh! My apologies!

On my online account, I see my 2015 orders and 2018 orders together, so I just assumed you had me under Fia/Fiachna Rose for everything. So sorry for the confusion!

Both of those clients are me :). The Beaverton, OR address is the current, correct one, and Fiachna Rose is my legal name (and Fia is the short version.)

I hope that helps clarify, but please don't hesitate to email if you need anything else cleared up. Thank you so much!

Okay -- got it! I merged the two accounts, marked you as a prospective student, and worked out your purchases on our "course check-off list" in the database. You have purchased everything except the books directly from us, and i presume you bought those online / elsewhere, because you say you have them.

Next step. Please contact the shop during business hours and ask for a course interview appointment. It will be on a Monday or Tuesday, 4:00 PM Pacific Time unless you need a different time. I don;t know what dates are still open in October, but Niki can look up on the calendar. I look forward to speaking with you.

@Catherine, Hi! Just friendly checking in since my last big order, to know if I'm missing anything. No rush. I'm actually enjoying my time before the course, I got creative and started taking notes using OneNote, it's extremely useful especially thanks to it's search feature.

@FiachnaRose, I think we will be taking the course at the same time when ever that is, I hope we can work together and learn from each other!

AceJay --

Here is what you still need:

IPD -- repelling, harmful, or vengeful
SPD -- repelling, harmful, or vengeful
Resin Incense
Charcoal
And be my friend on Facebook (if you are not already)

Very close!

Hello Catherine, thanks for looking! Please tell me how to add you to Facebook, I've tried and the button is greyed out. I think Facebook does this on purpose because it knows we don't know each other? Facebook is holding me back from making friends :(

Sorry, what is SPD/IPD?

AceJay,

I believe IPD is incense powder and SPD is Sachet Powder. The resin incense burns on the charcoal.

Dear AceJay,

JayDee is correct. When you receive a shipment from us, your invoice / packing list is included, and the SKU code for each item is recordedin with the quantity. IPD-HOO-xxx comprises the Hoodoo Incense Powders. SPD-HOO-xxx comprises the Hoodoo Sachet Powders. And so it goes.

If you scroll down our Lucky Mojo Curio Co. Complete Inventory page --

http://www.luckymojo.com/lucky-mojo-inventory.html

-- you will see all of our SKUs in alphabetical order, with full names and prices!

I just made my very first LM order, and I feel like a little kid waiting for Christmas. I'm very excited to start on this journey, and hope that sometime in the next year I will be eligible to be considered as a student.

rryan0604 --

Nice to meet you, and i hope you enjoy your time here.

If you are interested in my course, then the next time you order any of the required materials, just add a note in the message area saying that you wish to be marked as a "prospective student." There is no obligation to become a student, but if you mention that, then any items you order from my shop will be check-marked as meeting the course requirements for materials.

Hello "thispurplegoddess", as I mentioned a couple of posts above, start ordering stuff that you can practice with now like protection, cleansing, and money work. Money work can help you spare some money for these purchases! hehe. Get some Chinese wash to start washing those floors, bath crystals sachet and incense powders for cleansing, etc. Would you really want to move forward without a good cleansing? I'd say start there but I'd also say let your heart speak to you. Actually make sure you have the books first so you can study in the mean time! after my first purchase I was more confident on what I wanted on my next order. I hope I helped.

I was reading the HooDoo Rootwork Correspondence Course (HRCC) about two or three days go trying to get more information on Homework assignments. I didn't realize that the assignments were included in the HRCC. To make a long story short while reviewing the HRCC I noticed that a book named "The Art of Making Mojos" had been added as a required book for the course. I also notice that there is about seven other books that are related to certain lessons that needs to be purchased. I purchased all of the needed books that were required earlier this year. Needless to say I thought that I was done purchasing all required materials until I took a second look at the online HRCC. After saying all of that, I would like to know if someone from Lucky Mojo Curior would have called to notify me. I mean the only reason why I know is because I stumbled upon it while looking for instructions on my homework.

Sister Joyce --

The books that came out AFTER you signed up for the course are NOT "required reading" for you. I would NEVER ask a student to buy an "add-on" after purchasing the course!

I am so glad you have returned to studying, and i am happy that you bought the new books, but, honest, you didn't have to. (BUT, i think you are going to love them anyway!)

Much love and respect.

See you in the private Student Group part of the Forum.

I would like to get some items towards the course but do not have anyone to assist with shipping. LM does not ship to Nigeria.
Anybody with info or can help with sending to me if first sent to them...i will bear costs.
Don't want to miss waste any time getting the materials for studying...please.

Your prompt response will be highly appreciated.
Thanks all.

LM tracks the purchases in their database system to show eligibility for the course by purchasing them from LM. Hope this helps!

Thispurplegoddess -

If i'm not mistaken, purchases must be made through Lucky Mojo to be eligible for the course, not a re-seller. You can do as JayDee suggested and ask, as I can't speak for Miss Cat, but I'm fairly certain due to the following on the Course Page under Required Purcahses - http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocourse.htm ... _PURCHASES :
"I also require that you purchase the following items from MY SHOP, spread out over the course of at least four invoices, made over the course of at least four months"

Unfortunately, as you know, Lucky Mojo doesn't ship to Nigeria. You can read about this here - http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatshipping.html
The reason being "repeated problems with erratic customs regulations, burdensome customs charges, lost packages, damaged packages, stolen packages, non-delivery of packages, and governmentally confiscated packages"

As the page suggests you can "pay for your order using US cash, or with a credit card which has a billing address IN THE USA IN YOUR NAME. Then you may arrange for a pick up with a reliable and honest shipper whom you are sure will be able to deliver your goods to you and have your order picked up from our location in Forestville, California."
However I'm not sure the forum is the place to look for someone to do this as you can not send private messages here or give outside contact information to share your address, and a payment method. You really should find someone you trust, or a shipping company that may be willing to do this for you.

I hope you find a way to get what you need! Good Luck!

Thank you, RevJames. It is as you have stated.

The only "required purchases" i accept that are not made via my shop are the books, which may have been purchased via a reseller (usually Amazon) prior to the prospective student finding our web site or this forum. I do not require such folks to re-purchase the books.

My intent here is not to make money off of the purchase of supplies, but to ensure that the prospective student has enough supplies of a wide variety of forms (oils, sachets, minerals, herbs, washes, etc.) and conditions (money, love, protection, etc.) that they can actually follow along with the text of the 432 page book of lessons, opening packages and checking out the contents, and actually performing spells as they get to them in the lessons.

@jayDee...Thanks so much

@RevJames.....Many thanks for your response. I appreciate it. It would be difficult getting to pay for the items with a card that has my name and billing address in the US as i do not live there. I do have a Mastercard in my name not just a billing address in the US but in Nigeria.
I know Amazon accepts our payments but wanted to know if i could get from there most especially the study books.
:(

@MissCat......Many Thanks for your response,ma'am. I really only want to be on the right path for the course entry :D .

Hi I'm very interested in enrolling in the hoodoo correspondence course. I have inquired prior but if I meet the criteria, I feel I would be ready to take the next steps towards enrolling, my question is do i have to speak with some one or set up any kind of initial appointment? Thanks hope to hear back!

Nabeyeta365,

The first step is to make all of the required purchases. After you've done so, you call up to the store and ask to speak with and ask to be set up for a course interview. I dealt with Yosé but in a few posts above I see Miss Cat mentions that Niki also handles this. They will check to ensure you have made all of the required purchases and schedule your interview with Miss Cat thereafter.

I just got my 3rd package of supplies and it's so fun to see everything all lined up together -- the books, bottles, powders. I bought a little oriental cabinet at a garage sale to keep them in. I can't wait to get my 4th package, and, hopefully, get accepted to the course.

Hello all! I am Brandon and I am interested in taking the HRCC, but I know I have to some work to do with familiarizing myself with the shop and making required purchases, so I am looking into that now! I believe I've purchased a product or two from Lucky Mojo through Eclectic by Nature; however, I completely understand needing the purchase history on the shop. I looked through the curriculum and some of the Q&A on this feed, but I didn't find my exact answer. I'm sorry if I've missed it, though. So far, my experience has been reading some items online, purchasing some products, general discussion/research and I've read Old Style Conjure: Hoodoo, Rootwork, & Folk Magic by Starr Casas. I live in Southwestern Virginia.

I have used Van Van Oil in the past and I understand the convenience of purchasing it from a trusted source, but I would also like to be able to make it for myself and for some friends as a gift when needed. Will this course teach me an actual recipe / process for this using essential oils? I am not limiting myself to this oil, but as an example--will I leave with instructions/recipes such as these? I know there may be proprietary information not shared.

Although the reading list is all required and all important, based on my very brief introductions, is there a book someone thinks I might be best served by starting with?

I am so excited about becoming a potential student one day! I know I have work to put in before I can be considered, which is fine, because I need to practice some money drawing and saving to join this course without any additional stress! =) Also I sent a Facebook friend request as I believe is part of the process!

Hiya Brandon,

It's so exciting you're thinking about applying to the course! Hopefully we'll see you on the other side soon.

Any of the books you will find of value as root worker despite being a student or not so it really doesn't matter in my opinion. Just start with one that focuses on magic that appeals to you.

This course will give you very detailed instructions on how to go about creating your own formulas but lucky mojo will not give the recipes to their formulas. Making and selling hand-made goods is how they support free outreach programs like this forum, their radio shows, and thousands of web pages.

There is however a recipes page that you might find useful. Ms Cat has done decades worth of tedious research collecting and compiling and comparing different recipes for traditional formulas has been gracious enough to share some of that knowledge with us. Check out this page of the Lucky Mojo website: http://www.luckymojo.com/spells/recipes.html

Hi Dr. Darensbourg,

Thank you so much for your helpful reply and sharing in my excitement! It's so funny you linked me to that page. I was perusing recipes online a few days ago and had somehow stumbled upon that page and meant to bookmark it. I haven't been able to come across it again--so I am especially thankful for the synchronicity here.
