Asafoetida Devil's Dung Questions and Answers
Great!
Thank you!
I have read on some websites to be careful using Devil's Dung because they say it clears ALL spirits out even yours and good ones? They say to take your spirits out of the environment completely before burning it.
I don't know if this is true or not, but I have some Orisha in my living space so it has me wondering.
I wouldn't think it would be an issue because I wouldn't be actively trying to exorcise my Orishas, but I wanted to ask the pros rather than assume.
Thanks ahead of time!

HidingInSight,
I have moved this query to a brand new Asafoetida (Devil's Dung) thread because the topic had drifted away from 4 oz. oils.
First, i have no idea about Orishas, but if they are benevolent, angelic, or deific, they are not likely to be driven away by Asafoetida. It is used for healing, protection from disease, and many other good things.
Second, i cannot speak to your online sources, but if you follow a Santeria / Lukumi path, you ought to be consulting a Santeria / Lukumi priest or priestess.
Good luck!

Oops. Sorry Cat.
Um, I don’t know if I can be put in a religious box. And not saying you are doing that at all. Maybe I should introduce myself in this introduction page I hear of.
But your insight is very helpful nevertheless. I should prob get a reading about it.
And I don’t have to use it right away.
Blessings to you, Cat. Thanks for your help.

Re: Asafoetida Devil's Dung Questions and Answers
I know that Asafoetida is considered foul-smelling, but might I be the only rootworker here who thinks it smells rather enticing, like a Middle Eastern spice? Not that I would ever cook with it (!), but its smell reminds me of cumin more than anything. Perhaps I just have a strange nose.
I do consider it a powerful ally in repelling evil energy, and it has never let me down in that regard. It is equally effective in cursing an enemy, and one of my go-to additions to a skull candle burned for that goal.

Re: Asafoetida Devil's Dung Questions and Answers
Athena, Asafoetida is one of those odd plants, like ciilantro, that seems to demonstrate the variability of human genetic make-up. Just as some people consider cilantro to taste wonderful (i do) and others say it tastes like soap, asafoetida smells disgusting to many, but it certainly reminds some people of spices, including garlic. It is indeed used in South Asian cookery, and cooking it does modify the aroma, but i perceive it as "Devil's Dung," a really nasty smell.

Re: Asafoetida Devil's Dung Questions and Answers
Wow, I wasn't aware of its use in regional cookery. Thank you for that. I just associate it with its magical properties so never considered it an actual culinary ingredient. I love learning all of these dimensions to herbs, roots and the other building blocks of hoodoo. Thank you for opening up all of these wonderful new threads for discussion and exploration.
As for cilantro, it tastes soapy to me. Genetic make-up at work again.

Re: Asafoetida Devil's Dung Questions and Answers
I'm working on a lemon "stop gossip" working and I have no sulfur but I do have asafoetida (other ingredients I plan to include and have available are alum, slippery elm bark powder, cayenne powder, and hot chili flakes). I wanted to use something with a strong stench to make my target's breath foul with their lies if they speak on my client's name so to drive their allies away. Am I off base in thinking that asafoetida would work well in this usage? Both it and sulfur seem to have a sort of dual reputation as useful in protection and harmful work.

Hello nick.tillman,
Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes, you could use asafoetida for your spell.
Personally, I like the smell but that's just me.
Good luck.

Re: Asafoetida Devil's Dung Questions and Answers
Miss Athena,
Asafoetida is often used as a base in traditional Indian curries (South Asian).
My experience is between yours and Miss Cat's on the smell. It has a very pungent odor, verging on unpleasant to me. I also oddly find it stimulating to my appetite. In asking about it, a woman once explained how much she enjoys using it in cooking because she cannot eat onions or garlic, so it replaces some of those flavors for her.
I have not used it for repelling evil, and was only familiar with its negative applications. How do you use it in work to repel evil?

Re: Asafoetida Devil's Dung Questions and Answers
Hi BellaSolanae,
Evil does not like the smell of strong odors, hence the garlic and Vampire thing. You can make a mojo, Asafoetida, Yarrow, Agrimony, Rue, and a Silver Dime, and evil eye charm to protect from nasty co-workers. You can sprinkle in the 4 corners of the room or house. Mix with basil and pine needles burn as a fumigator, add cayenne to get rid of bugs (do not do this while in house). Put in the garden to repeal deer or other things from eating your plants. I would avoid wearing it as it very strong, unlike most smells you never really get used to it. There is a story of a girl's mother made her wear an asafoetida bag to ward off demons to school, no one would go near her. Plenty more ideas on https://www.luckymojo.com/hoodooataglance.html and Herb Magic page http://herbmagic.com/asafoetida-powder.html.

BellaSolanae,
In addition to the protective qualities Brother Christopher discussed, Asafoetida, also known as Devils Dung, is an herb that is also used in cursing individuals, burned on candles, stuffed in dolls, sprinkled with other cursing agents. Further reading reference is pg 34 of Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic by Miss Cat.

Re: Asafoetida Devil's Dung Questions and Answers
Hi Brother Christopher and JayDee,
Asafoetida is quite the foul smell. Vandal root (Valerian) smells better to me than Devil's Dung! I can completely understand why it repels evil. Scott Cunningham quoted Jim Haskins' Voodoo and Hoodoo in citing a incense recipe for exorcism and fumigation. It was to be burned in a room with all the windows open to drive out all foul entities. As I recall it had Asafoetida in it. After smelling Asafoetida/Devil's Dung, its quite pungent, it must be vile when burned. It must work similarly to the famed "Tibetan Ghost Purging Incense".
I've rolled candles in it, it works well for cursing. Are dolls stuffed with Devil's Dung to create a "stink" in or on the target?

BellaSolanae ,
It can be used for both purposes based on how you pray and work over it. Yes items in it , items dressed in it will smell. It is a traditional practice to open a window while purifying to give the entities and exit. You can pray to make the enemy "stink" you can pray to cause harm and pain to them, all depends on how you use it and where you place it in the doll.
