Hi all. I'm new to the forum and I'm going to be ordering some books and am thinking about getting the baker's dozen. I want to take the course soon. I see there are so many great books to choose from in the LM store. I've been self studying HooDoo for a few years now but I want to take the course to really learn as much as I can.

Hello!

I have very interested in joining the correspondence course. Currently I have bought some herbs from the store since I am very big into herbalism and the book that is sold here about the different herbs and there meanings. To get better acquainted about the history of Hoodoo I was wondering where I should start. I have been listening to the talks on the lucky mojo Facebook but I wish to know what should be the beginning. Since Hoodoo is very deeply intertwined with ancestors, which is my main reason for wanting to learn. I wish to go in with all much knowledge as I can. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I just wanted to share that tonight I finally placed my order for a few books that Cat recommended me. I kept doubting myself that I could be good at doing the work but after a second reading with Cat on Saturday night, her reassurance, and a few signs that I feel I got the next day after taking an uncrossing bath and after disposing the remains, I finally stopped doubting myself and placed an order for the books (The Art of Hoodoo Candle Magic, Hoodoo Spiritual Baths, Paper in My Shoe, and a few others.)
I can’t wait to get them and start learning 😃😃
Meanwhile I continue reading the website and this forum.
🙂

Hello, I apologize if this has been asked, or if it is not the appropriate place to ask.

I am interested in reading these volumes. I am pretty new to Hoodoo and it seems this is a primary source, albeit difficult to obtain in print.

It seems as though there is a lot of material online? I have found a good bit of this material on the Lucky Mojo pages and from another source.

I am wondering if theses writings are archived open domain somewhere? Or if anyone can offer any resources for one who would like to study them.

Thank you kindly and God Bless.

Harry Hyatt published those books in the 1970s and they are still under copyright. It is a felony, punishable by jail time, to publish copyright films, music, books, or art.

It is permitted to paraphrase or quote short passages with credit, and i have done so extensively in my own books because i consider Hyatt's 1,600 Black informants to be out best sources on the tradition of hoodoo.

hi everybody, i want to say hi after a couple of years away. i want to just say i used to--hmm okay i used to study on here day and night (no joke) because i come from cuba and left and was raised in canada.

now i came into this world a born medium and clairvoyant :) i was taught how to do magic by my grandmother and grandfather and older sisters. i was the youngest, we were a very magical household. as we started to grow up my siblings just started to drop everything, except for me who had the "gift"s the strongest. i was a wild child though.

fast forward i went through homelessness, couch surfing, homelessness, and finally am getting back to my spiritual roots. i still am very well versed in healing, jinx breaking and affirmative spell work i make things happen - BUT for an example. right now i live in transitional housing and EVERYBODY here is VERY envious of me because ive only been here for three weeks and ive already been offered housing permanent low rent housing. i will admit i've been dangling it in front of everybody like a pair of diamond earrings but they all talk shit, go silent, and act like teenagers (probably why the staff here didn't pick them for the first housing availalke here.

i probably sound so full of myself, but its true. they're doing everything they can to get me kicked out making things up. i have hot footed and worked and st.martha before got rid of my neighbours real fast.

now you guys, i want to bring my rootwork to the next level i want to learn how to use my mediumship skills which truly never leave you lets be honest. but i want to unravel them and master them completely so i can work with learn to make pacts with spirits. and work with them in my rootwork.

im also tired of being lady hearted and i want justice. i need a good guide on where to begin with spirits, the dead, pact making crossing and jinxing.

ive never used my talents in such a war like manner. i have been getting things from people. to be completely honest im stuck because im moving from here anyway but im also someone that demands justice when ive been wronged. regardless this is a justifiable cause to do some harmful work and to develop my bad side. to protect me but also do some damage. i just don't want to ruin the only personal concerns ive gotten

please moderators, help me out with books. i have to get books all over again because i lost them to homelessness.

hoodoo herb and root magic i know for sure. but thats more for my spell work

I am looking for good sources that teach how

* to master and advance my personal power in magic. and spiritual communication.

* to make pacts so spirits can help me and we can work together.

* to use black arts for justified revenge.

* to learn the heavy handed side of conjure to protect myself. through offense and no more defence.

all your answers will be greatly appreciated.

xoxo

Can anybody recommend a good book for the beginner on astrology, especially how it corresponds to tarot and Qabalah? I’ve been cramming really hard on tarot and Tree of Life since graduating, and I’ve become a decent reader, I am now ready to push forward into astrology for a holistic approach.

cognitivedissonance --

First, I recommend that you start with sun-sign astrology and build from there. This is the simplest form of astrological memorization. It is a complete system in and of itself, but it is only the foyer to the grand ballroom of full-scale astrology. If you enjoy it, you will want to study more.

When it comes to sun-sign astrology, lucky for you, the Lucky Mojo Curio Co. is releasing a full-colour hardcover edition of "Your Birth Star Influences" by Stanley Barrett [Gail Blakey] revised and edited by Deacon Millett. This is a classic illustrated book that will help anyone learn basic sun-sign astrology. Advance pdf pages of a selection of the pages will be given to attendees at the 2021 Virtual Hoodoo Heritage Festival on September 11th and 12th, 2021.

Second, if you liked sun-sign astrology and want to go deeper, you will want to know how to interpret a full horoscope. There are many books that teach this, according to Modern, Renaissance, Medieval and other forms, but in my teaching on the subject, i always recommend that folks start with "The A to Z Horoscope Maker and Delineator" by Llewellyn George. This book has been reprinted and revised many times, You will want a hardcover edition, not a paperback, and it should have been printed after the 1930 discovery of Pluto. It contains many months' worth of reading, with keywords to memorize.

Any publication by the American Federation of Astrologers will be useful as well. Their "Keywords" by Paul R. Grellis a great learning tool.

Then you will want to choose one or more systems of interpretation that suit you. I use modern astrology (19th and 20th century style). Others use South Asian Jyotish, Renaissance Astrology, Medieval Astrology, Arabic,Astrology, Heliocentric Astrology, Sabian Symbol Astrology, Pattern Astrology, Horary Astrology, and so forth. By the time you get deep enough into astrology to pick a form to explore, you will no longer be a beginner.

A must-have for new astrologers and for astrological authors

Image

This booklet is a short and concise set of important keywords used in astrological analysis, especially in the so-called "Modern" school comprising 19th, 20th, and 21st century techniques of interpretation. It is the astrological equivalent of a thesaurus and it will broaden your astrological vocabulary enormously.

I recommend it to all new astrologers, as well as to those who write on astrological topics. It will not teach you astrology, but if you are looking for powerful and punchy synonyms that describe various astrological patterns, this is the booklet you need.

There have been several editions, and one on Amazon currently lists for $70.00, with other authors added. Avoid it. Stick with this, the original AFA edition, either the pink cover or the orange cover. If it is not for sale here, search other venues. It is not a rare item and should retail for anywhere from 9 to 18 bucks, and is well worth the cost. -- cat yronwode

Hi Ms Cat,
I was wondering if you knew why it was that no one has ever republished Harry Middleton Hyatt's book series? I'm sure you have considered it. Are there copyright issues that prevent it from being done?

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I wanted to learn about magic from my ancestors. I have both Indigenous and European blood in me and wanted to learn about the different types of magic they do. Can someone suggest some books I can read to learn about them? Thanks

Hi Mickeymsb,

For European "Trolldom: Spells and Methods of the Norse Folk Magic Tradition" by Johannes Bjorn Gardback https://www.luckymojo.com/trolldom.html

Trolldom, the folk magic of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, has been practiced for more than 500 years. Now, after extensive research, Johannes Bjorn Gardback presents the fascinating occult art of Norse trolldom to an English-speaking audience.
This detailed account of traditional Scandinavian folk magic offers in-depth historical background, divination methods, and descriptions of practical spell-craft, and includes hundreds of collected Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish trolldom workings for love, money, protection, healing, and cursing.

Johannes Bjorn Gardback is a respected healer, teacher, and spiritual worker of Swedish folk-magic. A practitioner of hoodoo and conjure, he is a founding member of AIRR, the Association of Independent Readers and Rootworkers, and a board member of YIPPIE! He brings solid, firsthand knowledge of Norse, Scandinavian, and African-American folklore to his international practice. He currently lives in Goeteborg, Sweden.

While the Norse folk magic tradition called Trolldom has much in common with the practices of African-American, German, Scottish, and English folk magic, it is a unique cultural tradition. This book is a detailed account of traditional Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian folk magic and provides spells to cast for love, prosperity, protection, and good luck; as well as a look at the history of Trolldom in Scandinavia and among immigrants to the United States, including descriptions of the basics of Trolldom practice as performed by professionals for their clients.

For Indigenous depends on part of the Americas
You can start with "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic" by catherine yronwode https://www.luckymojo.com/hoodooherbmagic.html
"Ozark Magic and Folklore" by Vance Randolph

Best of luck,

mickeymsb,

In addition to the great suggestions by Mr. Christopher, I would also add a few other books that I think would assist you. One of which is Miss Cats Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic, this book is about African American Conjure, which is influenced by African, European, Jewish, Chinese, Native, South America, among others (depending on the region in study). You will find similarities in the use of herbs, oils and even prayers.

A CENTURY OF SPELLS

Two other books that Lucky Mojo carries, this is many more to consider.

AIRR Tech Team Report 6/3/2025 Henri Gamache, Hoodoo Author!

Image

The AIRR Tech Team skeleton crew gathered in the Graveyard of Time to pay respectful homage to the late, great Henri Gamache, author of the such enduring 1940s hoodoo drugstore classics as "The Magic of Herbs," "The Master Book of Candle Burning," "Terrors of the Evil Eye Exposed," and "Mystery of the Long Lost 8th, 9th & 10th Books of Moses" -- and to reveal beneath the ghostly shroud the actual personage of the author, Anne Fleitman! Catherine Yronwode wrote the page with contributions by Lukianos and Nagasiva Yronwode. Nagasiva scanned and photo-edited the art, he and Lukianos did proofreading. Lukianos did site-wide linking, and Nagasiva created this graphic announcement. Check out our authoritative new page on Henri Gamache!

The Henri Gamache page is here:

We shall now move to social media, to share the Henri Gamache page at the AIRR page on Facebook, here:
