All Saints Glass-Encased Vigil Candle Questions and Answers

Unread post by Janis » Fri Sep 27, 2013 3:54 pm

Today we celebrate St. Cosmos & St. Damian's day in Rio de Janeiro, and they are related to children, health and prosperity here. In this day people who are thankful to them go to the streets and distribute candies to children in small bags with their figures, asking the Saints to bless and protect their kids, homes and jobs (usually shops). St. Cosmos & St. Damian are also syncretised to the Ibeji and even to Exu Mirim in Candomblé/Umbanda. So first I want to ask the Saints to bless us all and our homes, bringing prosperity and good health. Secondly, I have a small doubt: I didn't find any specific oil to anoint a novena candle for them (or a simple offertory pink or blue candle), so I wondered if it would be ok to use Angelica Root oil, or if there is a more indicated oil or herb. Also if it would be fine to anoint a holy card (with their figure and or prayer) with this oil (to keep in the child's room for protection).

Thank you,
J.

The best oil to use if you do not see a specific oil for a Saint would be All Saints Oil.

Our prepared 8" glass-encased vigil lights come with a dressing of oils and herbs and will burn for 5 - 7 days, depending on ambient temperature and other factors.

If you wish to set a traditional Novena of nine days, you will either have to start and stop the candle (which can result in a smoky glass), or purchase two candles to run continually over the 9-day period.

Always practice fire safety when setting vigil lights. If you must keep them lit when you are away or asleep, be sure that no pets or children can get into the room with them, that they are not near curtains or flammable cloth or paper, and that you have a smoke alarm in your house. Placing lit vigils in the bathtub is quite common, but you must not have a shower curtain if you use this method. Setting them into a fireplace is ideal, as there is a ready-made chimney for them.

Greetings.

Are there any repercussions in lighting this candle compared to burning individual candles for a specific saint? Thank you!

humble,

Repercussions as in what?

All Saints is a product that can be used to call on ALL saints, or a general petition to the saints for assistance. You can use this for a Saint where you cannot locate or find a specific candle for them. A specific candle to a specific saint would likely get more attention to the specific saint in my personal working.

humble,

Piggybacking on what JayDee said, i will add that there are specific days in the Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant Christian calendars set aside for "All Saints." Read about these dates here:

Hi!

Interesting herbs for Cosmas and Damien would be the very root of Angelica, Root of Little John, but it would also be interesting to see the folkloric tradition of the country where you are located. What do Umbanda and Candomblé commonly use to serve these saints (even through syncretism)? Bath herbs, or commonly used items? It's worth searching!

Hail St. Cosmas and Damien!

I was going through a tremendous ordeal, owing to several people and, on top of that, they cut off my water! I poured them a glass of water and some sweets, and on Friday everything was sorted out. I received good money from my late grandmother's savings account and the water was returned the same day! I just have to thank these wonderful saints! Hail Hail Hail!

Ti Woz,

This post covers All Saints which can be incorporated for any Saint that does not have a specific product line, and you want to call on them for their services in your work.
