New to Hoodoo...

Unread post by Tattooedmommy » Thu Jul 15, 2010 8:39 am

Hi, I have just recently in the last year started learning about Hoodoo. I am curious to know from people who have chosen this path, how do you know if it is right for you? I have been practicing different forms of Magick for about 15 years and haven't felt like anything I found is right for me. Hoodoo however has come the closest to being what I am looking for, but before I make the commitment I would like to find out for sure it is what I should do. I feel a connection to the "darker" side, I don't know if this is a good or bad thing when practicing Hoodoo, or if there are specific spellworks that do better with dark powers? Thanks for reading.

Hey, I'm a tattooed mommy too!

There is no need to make any "commitments." Try a few products and see if they work for you. Read through Miss Cat's online book Hoodoo in Theory and Practice and get her book Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic to learn more.

I don't exactly know what you mean by "dark powers" and the "darker side" but Hoodoo does acknowledge that it is necessary to protect oneself and go for what one wants. Some practitioners do coercive, revenge, or crossing spells, but according to tradition, any negative work must be justified before God.

So I guess this might be too hard to explain, I am not looking to negative things per se, I mostly want to use Hoodoo spellwork to enhance my life, and those around me. I just have always felt a pull to one side, I do believe in God but my definition is different than most. I do at some point want to make a commitment to one path, I was born and raised until I was 16 in the Mormon church, which I knew from early on was NOT the right fit for me and I have been searching ever since then to find the one path for me. I will read the online book. Thanks for the info and welcome.

Well, hoodoo isn't a religion (though it's linked strongly with the Christian tradition), so you needn't commit to a new religious path in order to practice it. My spirituality has some Christian elements, but I don't consider myself a "Christian" per se. And I practice hoodoo. :) So take some time to learn about it, and practice it a bit, and then you can see if it's something you'd like to incorporate into your spiritual life as a whole or not.

After reading the online Hoodoo in Theory and Practice, I am going to say that it cleared up a lot of confusion I had on the subject, and also how MUCH I have to learn.
