There are many species of prickly-leaved and purple-flowered Thistle and their symbolism in the language of flowers varies by region. In Romania and Scotland the Thistle brings good luck. Additionally, the Scottish Thistle exemplifies bravery, courage, and loyalty in the face of treachery, and the purple blossom signifies royalty and nobility of character. However, in some areas, especially where the Thistle is an unwanted intruder among crops or in pastures, this same plant represents aggressiveness, pain, and self-protection. The Bible employs Thistles as a symbol of desolation or wild lands, but the Blessed Thistle is a species said to have great healing powers and to support breastfeeding; it was used by European Benedictine monks in the Middle Ages to combat the bubonic plague and finds a place in African American hoodoo in protective teas and floor washes. Last but not least, the edible Artichoke is a kind of Thistle, and is a healthy food indeed, high in fiber, low in fat, a good source of vitamin C, and known to help regulate blood sugar, cholesterol levels, and high blood pressure.
