A companion piece to my 2021 series on chromolitho fortune telling postcards of the early 20th century, this page presents "Fortune Series Number 37" -- known to collectors as "Halloween Witches Fortune Cards" and "Your Fortune Halloween Witch and Owls." In fact, nothing specifically ties this set of cards to Halloween, since every month in the year is shown, and instead of pumpkins, we see a weird landscape with a castle, owls, bats, a raven, and a wizard waving a magical rod over a campfire under the Moon, while before him stands a tail-up black cat, a copper tea kettle, a covered jar of potted meat, a tipped-over wine bottle, a porcelain cup, and a hunk of bread. Each card's text is fully transcribed, as is every card's symbolic gem, flower, zodiac sign, lucky months, and lucky days of the week.

This week i have made a HUGE leap forward at The Mystic Tea Room. Fans will remember that there is a little Bibliography of tasseomancy books at the site, consisting of the titles that Gregory Lee White and i had previously cited in the one-page bibliography on page 96 of our own book "The Stranger in the Cup: How to Read Your Luck and Fate in the Tea Leaves," published by the Lucky Mojo Curio Co. in 2020. Well, i have a sizable collection of antique, vintage, and contemporary tea leaf guides, and i have been waiting for a long time to find the time to upload them with reviews and cover scans. This week's Patreon page is lengthy, fun to look at, and a bit spicy to read, as i veer between fan-girling my favourite authors and letting my curmudgeonly side loose in reviewing the worst of the worst. MORE TEA LEAF READING BIBLIOGRAPHY! (Tier 3 JUNE 21st, 2022)

This week i am continuing my work for The Mystic Tea Room. Last week's huge annotated and illustrated Bibliography of books on tea leaf reading was NOT the end of the ride! I simply ran out of time, and here i am back with the follow-up -- Part Two. This week's installment is a bit shorter than last week's, but it is every bit as thorough. Names and dates have been researched, i have swooned over rarities, and if i don't like a waste of paper, i bluntly say so. Part Two concludes, for now, the enormous task of reviewing every tea-leaf reading book i own, and is available for one year to Patrons only. This week in "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," we journey to Georgia to witness the Cunjer Wars of the late 19th century, as reported by the white archaeologist and folklorist Roland Steiner. His perspective on African-American magic is influenced by his years as an enslaver and Confederate soldier, but his reportage is precise and accurate, and not influenced in any way by academic theorizing.

ROLAND STEINER: OBSERVATIONS ON CONJURING IN GEORGIA, 1901, from The Journal of American Folk-Lore, 1901 (Collected from 1878 - 1899)

This illustrated and annotated web page describes conjure, root doctoring, and witchcraft as practiced among formerly enslaved and recently emancipated people of African descent in the state of Georgia prior to 1900. Detailed accounts of several cunjer doctors personally known to the author are given, including their names and locations, making this a valuable research document for genealogists. The accounts of several cunjer wars comprise most of the text, but there are dozens of cursing, protective, and curing spells included as well. Techniques involve making cunjer bags, scattering herbs and graveyard dirt, laying tricks in a person's path, and crafting spiritual poisons.

The Southern Spirits web site includes material about hoodoo gathered from old books, magazine articles, newspapers, and fragments extracted from novels and short stories, annotated with interpretive and comparative notes. For those who are curious about this week's Patreon page and why i chose to write it -- it grew out of the brief outline on muscle testing i wrote for the podcast i did with ConjureMan and Maranda Tarot on the previous Sunday, July 3rd, 2022. This week i am bringing you another song transcription for the "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" collection, in which i document African-American hoodoo folk magic through evidence found in early 20th century blues lyrics. This week i am continuing my work for The Mystic Tea Room with a new article, "Viewing the Cup" -- inspired by my incredible lucky find of a circa 1940 King Features press photo that shows Nedra, a professional tea leaf reader in a New York City restaurant, in the act of telling a customer's fortune. By examining this large photo closely, we are able to learn a lot about Nedra and her method of tea leaf reading. If you love divination methods, you may be in for a surprise.

This illustrated web page takes a deep dive into the hypnotic career of Melvin Powers (1922-2013), the author of many popular books on hypnosis and auto-suggestion, the inventor of the electrically-powered Hypnodisc, the man who brought us the original "Hypnotic Rain" recording that gave rise to today's ASMR craze, and the publisher of more hypnotism books by classic and contemporary writers than you can fit on your book shelf. For 65 years no one did more to bring hypnotism before the public -- and this week, i am presenting some of his best work in the form of annotated reviews and cover illustrations. A mentor and friend to many, Melvin Powers deserves a full biography, but until one is written, this bibliography will help to keep his memory alive.

It's another journey into the bygone tea rooms of 20th century America, this time in Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania. On today's trip we will visit a tea room based on a once famous radio show, two Chinese tea rooms, one Japanese tea room that served Chinese food, and an American tea room that used Japanese imagery but served only "home cooking."

Meskell, an "Indian Herbalist" and self-declared "physician" born in 1875 who got busted by the Food and Drug Administration for selling herbal medicines -- and lucky for us, the FDA analyzed and recorded the ingredients of each and every one of her formulas!

This week in "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," i take a look at the United States Food and Drug Administration's successful legal action to destroy traditional American herbal knowledge that had its roots in ancient Native American medicine.

This illustrated page brings us the story of A. L. Machris and the Old Chief Medicine Co. of Detroit, Michigan, a mail-order house that purchased bulk herbal teas from Joseph E. Meyer's Indiana Botanic Gardens in Hammond, Indiana. Lucky for us, while ordering several shipments of these folkloric medicines to be destroyed, the FDA also carefully noted down all of the ingredients in six different remedies -- so now you can make your own!

This week in "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," we have an interview with a man of mixed Black, Choctaw, and French ancestry who was known as the "Indian Herb Doctor" of Marion, Illinois. In 1941 he was interviewed by a local writer named Beulah M. DeVard for a never-published book, "The Negro in Illinois." For more than 80 years, her faded manuscript pages lay crumbling in a library archive. Now, thanks to digitization and the support of my Patrons, we have transcribed this forgotten piece of herbal history for the benefit of all.

This week we tour the tea rooms of California, from the days of the great earthquake and fire in 1906 through the Covid pandemic of 2020. On today's trip we will visit Hollywood, Pasadena, San Francisco, and Santa Rosa, and see tea room culture as it was.

Thanks to troubleshooting by Jocelyn Waters and the assistance of Deacon Millett, we have identified and fixed a serious problem at the YourWateAndFate website.

When we changed servers in late October 2022, some of the Patrons-Only pages, as well as some of the publically-available pages suddenly required an administrator login to be seen. These have now all been fixed and a complete list of these pages that were made inaccessible in error, which are now available, was sent to patrons in email.

This is just another example of the power of Mercury Retrograde to mess up communications and require messages to be made a second time.

When one thinks of tea rooms in Virginia, the idea of British Colonial high tea no doubt comes to mind -- and indeed, we do tour a tea room planted on the site of George Washington's birthplace -- but Virginia is more diverse than you might imagine, with a Japanese tea room, a cozy Blue Jay auto court tea room, a tea room hidden in a garden, a dramatically coloured service station tea room, and, of course, for no reason at all, a tea room named after the Ella Cinders comic strip, with her picture on the signage! Come along and join the fun -- and learn a little bit about how tea rooms fit in with the National Park Service, silent movies, and Esso Standard Products.

Thanks to the support of my Patrons, there is a new public web page online at SouthernSpirits.org that describes conjure, root doctoring, and witchcraft among enslaved and emancipated people of African descent in Knoxville Tennessee and rural Texas. The narrator, Patsy Moses, was born into slavery and was interviewed by a member of the Federal Writer's Project in 1937, when she was 74 years old. She was a gifted story-teller, and her memories of the conjure remedies told to her by her grandfather Ned Butler are beautifully recounted. Her mythological tale of the origins of the Barred Owl, as well her tales of Hallowe'en games and the interpretations of dreams, provide rare and wonderful glimpses into the folkloric beliefs of African-American conjure in the mid-to late 19th century.
