Floriography or The Language of Flowers
Floriography or The Language of Flowers is a metaphysical symbol-system and a secret form of communication in which flowers, twigs, leaves, and other botanical items are used to communicate ideas.
* Flowers may be isted in correspondence with planets, signs of the zodiac, and spiritual entities such as goddesses, gods, and saints, in the same way that stones and minerals are, in order to facilitate magical spell-casting, divination by omens, and identification of spiritual entities in imagery or as offerings to them on altars.
* Flowers may be assigned specific meanings in a coded language ("The Language of Flowers" or "Floriography") so that secret messages can be exchanged between people in the form of gift bouquets or potted plants, or in allusive poetry, conversation, or fiction, without observers or outsiders being aware of the message transmission method or the message itself.
In the first usage, Floriography has been around for centuries, as a way of marking omens, assuring the proper offerings for spiritual beings, and gathering ingredients for casting spells.
The latter form -- the coded language -- arose during the mid 19th century in France and soon spread to England and North America. Due to the era of its first appearance, during the reign of Queen Victoria of England, it is often referred to as "The Victorian Language of Flowers,"

This week's offering is a happy one, a husband-and-wife collaboration, each of us doing what we do best, scanning and photoshopping (nagasiva) and writing and photoshopping (me). The real treat today was to finally bring before yo my long-held (and slightly incomplete) set of E. Nash Floriography postcards from 1907 or so. The pictures tell the story in glorious chromolithographic detail.

Re: Floriography or The Language of Flowers
Hello, everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This is an essential part of the "Your Wate and Fate" cluster of pages dealing with antique postcards that portray lucky stones and flowers and the links between these and the signs of the zodiac.
Your Wate and Fate -- J. Marks Fortune Series Number 37
[THE SECRET URL IS SENT TO PATRONS VIA EMAIL]
A companion piece to my 2021 series on chromolitho fortune telling postcards of the early 20th century, this page presents "Fortune Series Number 37" -- known to collectors as "Halloween Witches Fortune Cards" and "Your Fortune Halloween Witch and Owls." In fact, nothing specifically ties this set of cards to Halloween, since every month in the year is shown, and instead of pumpkins, we see a weird landscape with a castle, owls, bats, a raven, and a wizard waving a magical rod over a campfire under the Moon, while before him stands a tail-up black cat, a copper tea kettle, a covered jar of potted meat, a tipped-over wine bottle, a porcelain cup, and a hunk of bread. Each card's text is fully transcribed, as is every card's symbolic gem, flower, zodiac sign, lucky months, and lucky days of the week.
After a year for Patrons to enjoy, this material will make its way to the public-facing pages of the Your Wate and Fate web site, which is dedicated to the unusual but traditional forms of fortune telling. If you are not yet familiar with the site, check it out!

Re: Floriography or The Language of Flowers
Hello, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

Nagasiva and i have started a brand new project, and this week my Patrons will receive Part One of our four-part husband-and-wife collaboration on Floriography, the Victorian Language of Flowers. Drawing upon the knowledge contained in the antique 19th century books in my collection, and using up-to-date colour imaging, we present our own ephemera-in-the-making: "The Floral Oracle, or Fortunes in Flowers" by catherine and nagasiva yronwode. Will it be a book? Will it be a card deck? My Patrons will help me decide -- and their financial contributions are crucial to its final publication.

The new year, 2023, is here, so this week's Patreon sneak-peek page is the "E. Nash Gem Birthday Series 1" -- a rare set of 12 gilded and embossed chromolitho postcards from 1908 that predict happiness and showcase a gemstone and a flower for every month of the year. Yes, no matter what your birth date, these cards will bring you nothing but joy, happiness, and doggerel poetry. Tons of scanning and cleanup went into this production and we hope you love it.

Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

Aren't these little flower-girls from 1910 just the sweetest? We think so! What's more, they convey the mystical meanings of popular flowers, from back in the day, 110 years ago, when the occult was as cute as a button and cost just a penny to mail anywhere in the USA. We scanned and cleaned up the images and added a short history of the publisher, plus some links to our other pages on arcane flower lore.

Re: Floriography or The Language of Flowers
I love talking about flowers and folklore! The national flower of Romania, the peony, is also known as the "Palm of the Virgin Mary". This flower is often associated with longing, grace, beauty, or love. Around here, It is said that once upon a time, in a forest near a kingdom, there lived some beautiful fairies who couldn't stand the superficiality of mortals. So, whenever someone dared to enter their realm, they would transform them into a monster. Following the advice of their king, the people became afraid and stayed away from the cursed land. However, Peony, the young son of the king, with a daring spirit, heard about the malevolent fairies and, as soon as he reached adolescence, ventured into the forbidden lands to ascertain the truth of the story and the existence of the wicked fairies. As soon as he entered the forest, he fell into a deep sleep, and the fairies' curse began to take hold of him. However, captivated by his beauty, they chose to transform him into a flower, the most beautiful in the kingdom. As the peony blooms, immediately after sunset, the dew settles on its beautifully colored and fragrant flowers, and it is said that the water droplets are the tears of young Peony, eternally regretting not obeying his father's commands.

In Romania it is common for flowers to be directly associated with Jesus Christ or Mother Mary!
For instance, Lonicera caprifolium, also known in Romania as the "Hand of the Mother of God," is a climbing plant with a captivating fragrance. The young flowers are white, and after a few days, they turn yellowish-red.
In popular tradition, this plant is believed to have healing effects both on physical and spiritual ailments. Legend has it that the Mother of God, holding the baby Jesus in her arms, sought shelter among various plants to escape from King Herod's soldiers when they were harassing her.
The only plant that received and offered her shelter was the Lonicera caprifolium. Upon departure, the Mother of God blessed it, endowing it with healing powers: "From this day forward and for eternity, you shall be the favorite flower of the people. I grant you the power to heal all human ailments and save them from death, just as you have done for me."

BalkanDiviner --
These are wonderful folkloric stories. The story of the man, Peony, transformed into a flower has a sort of classical tone to it, like Greek stories of Hyacinth and Narcissus.
The story of the Lonicera -- we call it Honeysuckle in America, because you can suck the sweet nectar out of it -- is amazing to me. I have not heard it before and i just love it. As a tale it falls into a class of stories involving flowers, fruits, and animals who help Mary and Baby Jesus.
Among the English, there is a tale in which a Cherry tree, to please the Virgin Mary, blooms and ripens its fruit in a few minutes, at the behest of the fetal Jesus in her womb. She asks Joseph to pick some for her, but they are too high for him to reach, so he intemperately says, "Let him pluck you cherries who got you with child." God (or the fetal Jesus, or the Holy Ghost), then asks the Cherry to bow down, so she can pick the cherries.
This tale was also set into the form of a song, "The Cherry Tree Carol" -- it leaves out the miraculous blooming and ripening of the singular Cherry tree in a few minutes and instead takes place in a normal orchard:
The Cherry Tree Carol
Joseph was an old man
And an old man was he,
When he wedded Mary
In the land of Galilee.
Joseph and Mary walked
Through an orchard good,
Where was cherries and berries
So red as any blood.
Joseph and Mary walked
Through an orchard green
Where was berries and cherries
As thick as might be seen.
O then bespoke Mary,
With words so meek and mild,
'Pluck me one cherry, Joseph,
For I am with child.'
O then bespoke Joseph,
With answer most unkind,
'Let him pluck thee a cherry
That brought thee now with child.'
O then bespoke the baby
Within his mother's womb,
'Bow down then the tallest tree
For my mother to have some.'
Then bowed down the highest tree,
Unto his mother's hand.
Then she cried, 'See, Joseph,
I have cherries at command.'
O then bespake Joseph,
'I have done Mary wrong;
But now cheer up, my dearest,
And do not be cast down.
'O eat your cherries, Mary,
O eat your cherries now,
O eat your cherries, Mary,
That grow upon the bough.'
Then Mary plucked a cherry,
As red as any blood;
Then Mary she went homewards
All with her heavy load.

Re: Floriography or The Language of Flowers
Miss Cat,
There are so many folk legends, stories, songs, idioms and God knows what else both from Romania and the surrounding countries in the Balkan regions! Entire books could be written! In fact, even in Romania legends vary among regions. I'm glad you've enjoyed the story about the honeysuckle ( it's so confusing sometimes to find the proper names used in another country of different species) and I will post some pieces of floriography folklore that may not be entirely known in the USA here.
For instance, the snowdrop is a popular and beloved flower. It is said that the snowdrop has been a widowed man with eight children, four daughters, and four sons. When he remarried a woman who was cruel-hearted, she drove the children out of the house. Distressed, the children transformed into eight different species of flowers. When the father noticed their absence and couldn't find them, he also metamorphosed into a flower, the snowdrop. That is why it is said that every year, in spring, the snowdrop appears first and calls forth all the other flowers.
However, there's also another version of Christian origins. snowdrops appeared when Adam and Eve were expelled from Paradise. Upon reaching Earth and no longer seeing such snowstorms and snowfall, they tried to find their way back to Paradise but couldn't find it. An angel transformed the snowflakes into snowdrop flowers, which were given to them as a symbol of hope and the possibility of redemption from sin.
And if you travel to Moldova, don't be surprised to hear that the beautiful Spring accidentally cut her finger in the battle with Winter, and the drops of blood fell onto the ground, melting the snow. Shortly thereafter, the first snowdrop sprouted in that spot, symbolizing Spring's victory over Winter.

Re: Floriography or The Language of Flowers
balkandiviner --
Do you have a copy of the book "Legends of Incense, Herb, and Oil Magic"? There are quite a few folk tales in that book about various plants -- and as i discovered while editing it, they were plagiarized from an earlier book, "Myths and Legends of Flowers, Trees, Fruits, and Plants in All Ages and in All Climes" by Charles Montgomery Skinner, published in 1911. That book is marvelous and is still in print, being long out of copyright.
I would love to see you write a book on Romanian folklore and magic.

Re: Floriography or The Language of Flowers
Usually flowers have positive folkloric associations, but to my surprise I've found a piece of Romanian folklore about the elderflower which stands out as a plant linked with the Devil and a certain degree of evilness.
In Maramureș, a northern region of my country, a local story about the elderberry states that after God conceived fire, the Devil used an elderberry branch to steal it. Thus, elderberry is cursed. Therefore, it is never put into the fire. Moreover, in the old belief of the Maramureș countryside, magical practices involving the elderberry were used to bring a husband to unmarried girls. But since the Devil is evoked through this plant, they would unknowingly sell their soul to him as a result.
Another legend is related to Judas. The legend states that after his betrayal, Judas wanted to hang himself from an elderberry branch, but it broke. And Judas went to hell while still alive. As an aftermath, the elderberry became a symbol subject to misfortune.

Re: Floriography or The Language of Flowers

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $2.00 per week for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination.
This week my Patrons will receive Part One of our four-part husband-and-wife collaboration on Floriography, the Victorian Language of Flowers.
Thank you, Patrons, for making this possible. Go to

After a year, these pages are given to the public to read for free. This week's released page is the "(Colour) Flower Girls series G-53" by E. Nash.

A fully-blossomed Camellia outside our bedroom window, symbolizing our beautiful love and dynamic romance. This plant is probably 25 or 30 feet tall, almost reaching to the second-storey roofline. When floated in a low glass bowl with its leaves, the Camellia evokes the notion of alertness and vivacity. Intermingled with the Roses closer to the ground, these are the happiest of those around the house because of their Southern exposure.
